Posted in For Facebook, Magazine, News | Comments Off on The dark haunting music of Rykarda Parasol evokes scenes from David Lynch …

Rykarda Parasol describes her brand of dark and mysterious music as “Rock Noir”. In it, there is a cinematic component that calls up images akin to David Lynch or Alfred Hitchcock giving way to an icy blonde plot. Indeed, the notion of the smart fearless femme fatale is an image that Parasol finds intriguing and […]

Pale Seas – Places To Haunt EP
Saturday, May 24th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pale Seas – Places To Haunt EP

Image: 1590158 London-via-Southampton star-gazers Pale Seas today unveil their
highly-anticipated debut EP Places to Haunt. By exploring themes of
youth, death and social alienation, lead singer Jacob Scott has
managed to contrast dark, ethereal soundscapes with soaring
harmonies to devastating effect. Through the EP’s four tracks, Jacob
uses this subject matter to seek hope within the macabre, and marks
himself as one of Britain’s best emerging songwriters in the process.
At its heart, Places to Haunt was born out of a growing disillusionment
with education and failure to coherently adapt to the challenges of
adulthood.
Encouraged by the reaction of close friends to his music, Jacob
recruited Mathew Bishop (bass) and Graham Poole (guitar) in summer
2012. The recent addition of William Hilliard (drums) has further
increased the band’s prowess.
To record the EP, Pale Seas travelled to the Isle of Wight to work with
long-term collaborator Paul Butler (Devendra Banhart / The Bees /
Michael Kiwinuka), experimenting with a number of different sounds
and textures, all of which can be heard on the record. With the first
release from the band on its way and special live shows in the
pipeline, 2014 looks set to be the year Pale Seas step out of the swell
and into the open.

Max Mathews – Music From Mathematics
Friday, January 3rd, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Max Mathews – Music From Mathematics

Image: 1586111 Originally released in 1960 and 1962 on two unique formats with over-lapping tracklists, the seminal Music From Mathematics Showcase Project marked the phonographic introduction of computer generated music for the first time in the public arena. Almost exclusively created at Bell Laboratories using an electronic to sound transducer and a state of the art IBM 7090 (complete with a gargantuan 32KB of disposable memory!) Music From Mathematics featured multiple random-not-random sound assaults preconceived by a host of technicians-cum-musicians eager to challenge the way humans would make and create music at the turn of the New Millennium. Amongst a list of pioneering composers, the two original limited releases pressed by Decca and Bell Telephone Laboratories feature a majority cross section of recordings by two leading composers – project instigator Max Mathews and Bell Laboratories’ stalwart vacuum tube scientist John Robinson Pierce.

As a tutor to many experimental electronic composers who studied at Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (including Suzanne Ciani) and as an inspiration to the subsequent generations that followed the original electronic music boom, Professor Max Mathews’ legacy began with the birth of computer programming technology for music composition (his method known as MUSIC-N) in the 1950s which was showcased amongst other performers on these seminal recordings from 1960. For a man with as many protégés as personal electronic music achievements Mathews maintained a strict behind the scenes role despite perhaps his most notable public endorsement when referenced in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 which paid homage to his haunting robotic version of Daisy Bell/Bicycle Made For Two (which appears here) sung by the Hal anti-character. As the man who taught the robot to sing it is fair to state that a vast portion of the electro or techno made by today’s musicians can be technically (undeniably) attributed to Mathews’ early achievements exemplified here, and not least substantiated by the fact that the leading visual programming language found in music production software known as Max MSP remains a testimony to his legacy. It’s time for microchip pop fans to visit your grandparents.

DeWalta & Shannon – All Inclusive
Thursday, August 15th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DeWalta & Shannon – All Inclusive

Image: 1581995 The newest installment of Haunt Music comes from the hands of label founder himself Mike Shannon, by way of collaboration with DeWalta and featuring certain ivory-tickler extraordinaire, Mister Danuel Tate. Cruise Ship is a smooth, jazzy number with an impossibly catchy hook that serves as the foreground to an über cool sax –played by DeWalta himself-. Enter stage right a very serious piano that slowly begins to bubble alongside the mythical Serge modular, taking the track into funkier, more conceptual terrain. In short, this is one ship that could as easily disembark on the beach or at a sweaty basement full of cool kids wearing Clubmasters. On the flipside, Double Booked starts with a cartoon-reminiscent burst before a chubby kick leads it down another path of chill bass lines and jazzy drums. The Serge modular comes back to smooth the whole thing over with a layer of funky.

Royal Dust – Royal Dust
Thursday, May 2nd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Royal Dust – Royal Dust

Image: 1579583 Haunt Music present the self-titled album from drummer extraordinaire Royal Dust. With such a wide range of sounds imagine a mixture of Tom Waits, Stan Getz, Colin Stetson & Mulatu Astatke playing under a film noir setting in the desert: its that type of record!

Venezuelan-born Miguel Toro is an impulse generator: a versatile drummer and percussionist. Rhythm is his motor, but rhythm here does not just denote a motion within a certain beat. Rather it means a fundamental, ever changing pulse, vibration, resonance. Inspired by aesthetic forms as intense and diverse as the jungle of sounds ascending from his royal dust, Miguel Toro succeeds in giving them an extraordinary voice. Imagine a mixed chorus of Tom Waits, Morphine, Talk Talk, Stan Getz, bass sax player Colin Stetson, Canonball Adderley, Mulatu Astatke and a bit of Emil Richards in a Film Noir setting in the desert under the stars: It’s the spirit of their collective poetry that soars up.
A sound designer for famous artists and institutions like Olafur Eliasson and the Bauhaus Dessau, a remixer for Tony Allen’s Afrobeatmakers, and a collaborator with exceptional artists like epic chanteuse Aerea Negrot and Mambolectro project Mambotur, Miguel Toro accumulates a lot of experience and expertise. In a most sophisticated way, the result of his work marks the birth of a vibrant musical lifeform that exists in Selva Swing time. “Royal Dust” is a concept: utilizing one single microphone, one computer and several apartment rooms for a most unique and efficient recording process. It is a creation that transfuses an abundance of colour and soul to the amalgamation of Jazz, Lounge and Electronics, soaked with inspiration.

Imagine nature as a sound system. Hear it grow (on you).

Reto A Ichi – The Lapse of The Exchange / Alone Moving Often
Friday, October 6th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Reto A Ichi – The Lapse of The Exchange / Alone Moving Often

Image: 1612085 From the 1971 Spanish translation of a popular Japanese
film and TV character comes the inspiration for a strange
and haunting series of sonic vignettes. Like the character
from which it takes its name — Zatoichi, a blind masseur
and gambler who is also a skilled swordsman — the music
coalesced outside the familiar contexts of rhythms, genres
and tropes. Written over a period of two years in the heart
of New York City and the nearby countryside, the two
albums that form the Reto A Ichi debut represent a return of
sorts for their creator, Guillermo Scott Herren. Known for
challenging norms and forging new paths as Prefuse 73,
with this new project Herren hews closer to the light
touches and compositional aspirations of early aliases like
Delarosa & Asora and Savath & Savalas. But even those
references only explain so much. Reto A’ichi is a project
that aims far beyond the easy expectations of genre,
instead seeking to draw listeners into the unexpected,
blind but never without guidance

Reto A Ichi – Alone Moving Often
Friday, October 6th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Reto A Ichi – Alone Moving Often

Image: 1612083 Alone Moving Often, the second album, we find Reto A Ichi
away from the city, lost in the vastness of empty summer
houses and the complications that solitude brings. Sitting
in the prison of his own quiet, Reto A’ichi seeks to capture
the essence of silence: the compositions are stripped back
further (“Pforever Reto”), the instruments given prominence
(“So Contra”), and the chaos of the city replaced by the
cacophony of nature (“Criminality”).
To be alone, one must learn to constantly move in both
work and purpose. As the rest of the record unfolds, Reto A
Ichi comes to realize that nothing is ever truly quiet and that
to run from the world is to simply find yourself in another
part of it. A sense of acceptance for these unsettling
realities is reflected in the music, from the harsher tones
and frequencies that resonate throughout “Noise Counter
Melody” and “Ghost Arpeggio” to the heavy stroke of the
keys on “Alone Moving Often” and the haunting drone of
“Mountainside Hillside”.

Joon Moon – Moonshine Corner

As 2015 was wrapping up, an unknown outfit called Joon Moon took the music world by surprise with its first single Chess. The four cuts on the Call Me EP, a beguiling mix of pop and soul, electronic music and jazz, melancholy and elegy, heralded a forthcoming album that was bound to leave a blast radius on landing. And while the name and vibe of the project evokes a purple veloured, oldHollywood universe, Joon Moon was borne out of a resolutely contemporary meeting of the minds – the kind the can only happen amidst our jetsetting music scene.
After ten years of touring the world playing double bass with Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague ensemble, alongside excursions into house music on the Yellow Productions Art of Disco compilations, not to mention co-producing Florent Marchet’s Bamby Galaxy album, it was time for songwriter/producer/renaissance man Julien Decoret to dedicate his heart and soul to a new challenge. With Raphaël Chassin, (Hugh Coltman, Vanessa Paradis, Pauline Croze) on drums, helping out with the production and arrangements, and Sébastien Trouvé as sound engineer, Decoret set out on his retromodern Joon Moon mission, laying out the contours of a world where trip-hop, jazz, soul and electronic music live side by side, sharing their joys and sorrows.
The only missing element was that one last bit of magic, a voice that could take the project to ever-loftier heights. Enter Krystle Warren. She had worked with Rufus Wainwright, and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, and had made forays into house music herself by providing vocals to two cuts off Hercules and Love Affair’s, The Feast of the Broken Heart. That’s not even mentioning her own band, Krystle Warren and The Faculty – and its three albums – which display her impressive grasp of soul music, folk, blues… Joon Moon’s first album Moonshine Corner, which stole part of its name from an Austin watering hole that had become a haunt during its first American mini-tour, is the sound of four people meeting at an unlikely crossroads named Melancholy. Recorded using modern studio techniques along with vintage 60s and 70s instruments, Moonshine Corner places its chips on a subtly modern vibe through twelve lovelorn tracks that weave themselves around pop and trip hop, folk and soul, jazz licks and electronic washes, digging their own groove in the river bed dug by years and years of exposure to Radiohead, Neil Young, and Zero 7. Joon Moon is also, lest we forget, a project that takes on its full magnitude on stage. The barebones live setup (drums, piano) allows Krystle’s powerful voice to fill the space, swaying from nervy to more subdued laments, hopping around tessitura in the blink of an eye. Consider the live french version of Radiohead’s I Might Be Wrong, which transports you to the fictional smoky jazz club where forgotten, old 50s star Joon Moon holds court behind the microphone. Love makes the world go around. “two”, the second album by The Soul Session, is
full of love. Ralph Kiefer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer
from South Germany embarks on a stylistically diverse journey into Soul, Jazz,
Funk and World Music.
Being a highly respected session musician in the jazz as well as the crossover
scene, Kiefer made a serious impact in 2011 with “one”, the first Soul Session
album. “one” was built on a solid backbeat of Soul, Hip Hop and Funk, while “two”
now takes a step further into a spiritual and eclectic dimension. “Quantraversa”
featuring the voice of Las Vegas based neo-soul queen Georgia Anne Muldrow is
the mind- blowing opener of this album, a truly deep and intense rhythmic
statement. Quantraversa is a word which you will not find in any dictionary, but
that is not the point, says Ralph Kiefer. “This album is a journey to the inner self.
The recording process was like meditation. I often started with a loop, or an idea
for a melody. It evolved from there and I simply let it happen. When I involved the
lyricists and vocalists, my drafts sometimes took a completely different paths and
ended in something unexpected and beautifully new.”
“The Passage” is a prime example of Ralph Kiefer’s visionary working style. “I
mainly work with my mobile studio. Nowadays you can virtually record every
instrument in any place you like, you just need a good microphone. Some of my
guest vocalists also recorded their part in their own studio.” This way Tokunbo
Akinro, the voice of Tok Tok Tok, turned “The Passage” into a futuristic, haunting
soul tune. “Live Your Life”, introducing Anaj, works nicely as a kind of theme tune
for “two”. Here you have a lose groove which is tight at the same time, keeps in
control and simultaneously lets it loose. And then there’s “Wish The Beat To
Never Stop”. Ralph Kiefer is especially happy about this track. “I am a fan of Omar
since his first album on Talkin’ Loud, I am very proud that he contributed to my
album.” With his unique UK Soul stylings Omar fits perfectly to the brilliantly
understated and well-informed Soul Session sound.
It’s the two suites which are central to “two”. “Kalimba Suite” kicks off with a
stripped down piano, percussion and Kalimba session. Then “Steely Dan” gives it
away in its title, sounds like it will move straight into “Do It Again”, but then it does
not and turns into a funky Soul Session style instrumental jam. “Transformation” is
the perfect ending for “Kalimba Suite”, sticking with the Rhodes, bringing in more
synthesizers and getting quite cosmic. “Liberation Suite” has Anaj coming in
again. “Got To Go Where To Go” is pure bliss and funky fun. “Samba De Alfana”
is a spiritual and deep Brazilian, irresistible jazz-house dance floor mover. With a
motto like “Liberation for the nation” and a vocoder meeting a Caribbean style
“Funky Nassau” groove you will agree: “Open up your mind!”
“You Are Everything” uses a Horace Silver style piano motif, then adding the
sampled voice of philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti: “His philosophy is very central to
my creative process. In the troubled times we live in I think his message is more
relevant than ever. Without self-knowledge there is no basis for peaceful thought
and action.” Fatma Tazegül closes the album in taking “Never Let Me Go” to
another level with her soulful gospel voice. Think of the open mindedness and
global funk and fusion rhythm in the Seventies, but also of the Acid Jazz
movement during the Nineties and you get the picture of what “two” is about love,
peace, being true to yourself and getting involved.

Angels Dust – Great Depression

Image: 1610881 Southern California duo Angels Dust return with “The Great Depression”, a sinuous six-song crawl sharing new portals in their musical odyssey.

Discordant organs, melancholy percussion, warped sensual drone and seductive vocals, unnervingly swirl together in this darkwave dream. Producer Psychopop provides the crunching lo-fi production that envelops Flavia’s ethereal intoning and muffled whispers. Crowning the album are epic “Pure”, and grinding bluesy waltz “The Mother Is A Child Too”, which effortlessly transmutes broken romanticism into a coarse hazy swoon. The raw 20-minute EP closes with the stunning “Beating of My Heart” a brutal, provocative ode to heartbreak and wanton sexuality. Angels Dust’s crackled dirty orchestral hymns present a brilliantly morose offering of hedonic heartache and bitter analogue love.

Angels Dust is producer Psychopop & singer Flavia. In June 2015 HIT+RUN released their mesmerizing debut EP ‘Slow Tapes’ [HNR48], six moody songs swathed in grainy reverb and dense production. Critics praised Angels Dust’s hazy sound & haunting vocal stylings, bracketing their psychedelic dream pop alongside Portishead, Broadcast, Mazzy Star & Beach House.

Meet the Steoples — Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker and Yeofi Andoh. Gabriel is a longtime producer, under the name Gifted & Blessed a.k.a. GB, integral to the start of the Los Angeles beat scene. He recorded his full-length debut album in 2004, which also marked the first collaboration with vocalist and U.K. native Yeofi on the haunting “Love is the End” single. The two had met through mutual friends, drawn to one another through their shared appreciation for genre-defying creativity.

“Up to that point, there really weren’t too many folks who were experimenting with bridging the genres in so many kinds of diverse ways like we were interested in,” GB says. They were both open-minded, and both reaching for good music instead of being locked into a particular style.

When they met, something clicked. GB was working with certain musical colors and collages that resonated with Yeofi, and the result is Six Rocks, an exploration of sound that often emerges as a collection of unfinished ideas. In lieu of being incomplete, however, GB prefers to describe it as unresolved. There are no typical song structures or chord progressions, or any sense of normalcy here. And that’s a good thing. Much is left to interpretation and imagination.

collectible ?exidisc). Paying ftting tribute to the author’s narco-torius
former hometown with ‘Drugstore’, and with pledged devotion just
wants the kids to know ‘It All Goes Away’ (the second single & video).
Spectral Gonjasuf halfway-materializes from the aether blessing
some enduringly haunting bars on ‘Hello God’, however, disappears
just as fast, with the narrator taking exit close behind. In less than
thirty minutes the album ends, though with as much as you were just
told, explicit details remain dark and for the life of you cannot recall
actually seeing a face…

Perera Elsewhere – All Of This
Friday, April 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Perera Elsewhere – All Of This

Image: 1609213 Building off the sultry electronic art-pop blueprint of her acclaimed 2013 debut ‘Everlast’, Perera Elsewhere returns with her sonically adventurous, dystopian second full-length ‘All Of This’.

Tracklist:
1. Something’s Up
2. The Other Side
3. Happened
4. Tomorrow South
5. Karam
6. Big Heart
7. Girl From Monotronica
8. All Of This
9. Shoes
10. Runaway
11. Weary

Building off the sultry electronic art-pop blueprint of her acclaimed
2013 debut ‘Everlast’, Perera Elsewhere returns with her sonically
adventurous, dystopian second full-length ‘All Of This’. Written and
recorded in Berlin, Istanbul, and Mumbai over the course of three years, ‘All
Of This’ expands on downtempo rhythms and ornate organic/electronic
instrumentation with more attention to folding hypnotic, moody
atmospheres traversing trip-hop, avant R&B, and experimental folk.
A fixture between many disparate music scenes as an experienced yet
self-taught producer, Perera was an original member of Jahcoozi (B-Pitch
Control). She has participated in various collaboratory cultural music
projects in far-flung parts of the world with the Goethe Institut and has
taught people in Bangladesh how to use Ableton to try and create the kind
of musical world they feel to : anthropology, feminism, community, DIY
and empowerment through music are all thrown together to try and make
sense of the things that surround us.
A quiet tension haunts throughout the record’s instinctual arrangement
and movement. Addressing increasing distrust and confusion towards our
political/economic systems, the album’s smoky first single “Something’s
Up” delivers a warning to open our eyes. Touching upon many timely
societal anxieties like wealth inequality the rise of parallel worlds / echo
chambers within society and people living in their own bubbles / gated
communities of the mind (“The Other Side”), ego/self-obsession
(“Happened”), the constant noise of being continuously targeted by
marketing (“Weary”) and dealing with all these pressures or even attempting
to understand our times (“All Of This”), this is a record that approaches
such weighty issues in a manner that feels deeply personal.
Using a hybrid of digital techniques, analog equipment (Buchla,
Korg MS20, Poly6, Monotron Delay) and organics (eg.trumpet and some
percussion), Perera Elsewhere arrives at an original sound spotlighting how
the soulful human element cross-polinates with technology and electronic
exploration. ‘All Of This’ is raw yet sophisticated expression of an artist
trying to make sense of these dark times.

Key Points:
• Follow up to 2013’s ‘Everlast’ which received notable support from

Kevin Over – Mobilee Back To Back Vol.11
Saturday, February 18th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kevin Over – Mobilee Back To Back Vol.11

Image: 1608862 Kevin Over is up next on the new edition of Mobilee Back to Back.

A1 Kevin Over – Look At Me Sartre
A2 Kevin Over – 2002 [Soulphiction Dub]

B1 Kevin Over – Blue Ox [Marquis Hawkes Remix]
B2 Kevin Over – Shady [Jacob Korn Remix]

C1 Kevin Over – Hillside AV
C2 Kevin Over – Pfeffi Care

D1 Kevin Over – Trevor Knows
D2 Kevin Over – Vember

Kevin Over further cements his status as mobilee’s most exciting fresh talent with a blistering collection of unheard material, deftly showcasing the work of a young artist rapidly reaching critical mass.

You don’t come to find yourself at the helm of one of the most successful underground house and techno imprints without a keen eye for fresh talent, that which has the potential to be nurtured, moulded and pushed to the next level. Anja Schneider has worked hard to hone that skill over the years, fine-tuning her instinctive, risk-taking persona, as a result, she just knows when someone is worth investing in. With that said, she new has her new protégé Kevin Over locked firmly in her sights – and with good reason.

But even so, for Over to find himself behind the wheel of one of mobilee’s annual long-form releases, despite him barely being over a quarter of a century old (not to mention having only met its founder in person less than a year ago), is quite something. But then again, Anja Schneider isn’t your usual A&R, and Kevin Over isn’t your usual ‘talent’ – as if his recent stellar run of EPs on Truesoul, Nofitstate, Avotre and of course mobilee in the last year alone, didn’t tell you already.

Part compilation, and part album, Over was keen to emphasize how this was his first musically extensive project which followed a defined musical structure, and was consistent in its vibe and mood from beginning to end, “I felt like I needed more of a defined direction at this point in my career, as many of my EPs had traversed a wide variety of styles. The whole process took around three months, drawing from my early influences in garage and Chicago house as well as older funk stuff. I definitely got lost down the Youtube rabbit hole whilst looking for things to sample! I’m also so proud of having some of my favorite artists such as Marquis Hawkes, Jacob Korn and Soulphiction on board for remixes as well.”

As a result, the package displays a remarkably well-rounded cohesion, despite many of the tracks being wildly disparate in a musical sense. They all contain that trademark Over sound that’s hard to put your finger on, be it the piston-driven, jacking drums, the use of dirt and distortion as a textural tool, or the understated yet catchy melodies. The gloriously gravelly deep house of ‘Vember’ contrasts beautifully against the woozy, euphoria of ‘Look At Me Sartre’. There’s everything from disco-inflected bangers (‘Pfeffi Care’) to bittersweet, nostalgic house making an appearance (‘Hillside Av.’), rounding off with his haunting take on Rodriguez Jr.’s 2012 anthem ‘Satellite’

As is tradition with the ‘Back To Back’ series, the full package will also be accompanied by a ‘best of’ mobilee tracks from the previous year, with tracks from Audiofly, Ray Opkara, Rodriguez Jr. amongst many others, and of course Anja Schneider herself. Kevin’s series of original tracks and remixes will be available to buy as a 2 x 12” gatefold package. A tour is also scheduled to follow.

Image: 1607037 The Content Label, Los Angeles’s ‘experiential’ hip hop imprint, rarely signs an artist based on a demo, but an impressive delivery from Japan recently broke the trend. Recorded by Salty – AKA Tokyo-based producer / videographer Naoya Ninomiya – the demo arrived as a nearly complete object, ready for dissemination to the global hip-hop headz-space. The songs have been mastered by legendary Japanese hip-hop studio engineer ‘The Anticipation Illicit’ Tsuboi and, with Dday One acting as executive producer it is now ready to be unveiled as the thirteen track album Camera. It’s a fantastic audio journey that gives a glimpse into Japanese beat-making prowess while sitting proudly within the instrumental hip hop echelon.

With Camera, Salty showcases a diverse set of styles and an acumen for rhythmic patterns and tone, developed through his years of crate-digging and experimentation. And there are many moments to claim as highlights … “Remonoganac” with its gentle piano, atmospheric textures, and tough beats, the laid-back hip hop funk and scratches of “ADSL”, the smoky downtempo vibe of “The Sea Came At Midnight” is reminiscent of sounds of classic Dj Krush, and “Melting In The Dark” with its cinematic layers and haunting vocal. These all qualify for honors, among other possible choices. With Camera, a compelling portrait of Salty as a rising star on the beat-making scene has emerged and The Content Label is on the case.

Painkiller – Execution Ground (2LP)
Friday, August 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Painkiller – Execution Ground (2LP)

Image: 1605743 The seminal 1994 double album by the original PAINKILLER line-up BILL LASWELL, JOHN ZORN and MICK HARRIS on vinyl for the first time! Avant-jazz, grindcore, dub and ambient melt into eerie tracks of haunting atmospheres.

When PAINKILLER started in 1991, their first two albums “Guts Of A Virgin” and “Buried Secrets” (both released on extreme metal label Earache) were heavy attacks blending grindcore and free jazz that brought together the musical backgrounds of the three protagonists: drummer MICK HARRIS had just left grindcore legend NAPALM DEATH, JOHN ZORN explored new extremities with his NAKED CITY project while BILL LASWELL had as a member of roaring free jazz quartet LAST EXIT ( PETER BRÖTZMANN / SONNY SHARROCK / RONALD SHANNON JACKSON) proven that he was not only a visionary producer but also an accomplished bassist. But it is their 1994 double album “Execution Ground” that remains the opus magnum of the brilliant trio: ZORN’s unmistakable shrieking saxophone, HARRIS’ pounding drums and LASWELL’s growling sub-bass lines were given heavy mixing desk treatment, resulting in extended tracks that are no less intense than their early works but display the full range of the musicians’ skills. Soaked with reverb and delay, avant-jazz, grindcore, dub and ambient melt into eerie tracks of haunting atmospheres – even more so in the ambient versions of disc 2. Mastered and cut by RASHAD BECKER at D&M Berlin, “Execution Ground” is now available on vinyl for the very first time as 2x 180gr LP incl. a download code and insert in a limited edition of 500 items.

Various – Peace Chant Vol.1 – LP2 (LP+MP3)
Thursday, June 2nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Peace Chant Vol.1 – LP2 (LP+MP3)

Image: 1604421 From 1963 to 2014: “Peace Chant – raw deep and spiritual jazz” exhibits 51 years of music. A well matched anthology with sounds to dive into, hard rhythms to dance to and vocals to meditate on.

The Tramp Records crew has compiled 8 tracks in nice order and dramaturgy. Some tunes you might have never heard before unless you own one of the rare original vintage vinyl records. Peace Chant is released on two separate LPs with own catalogue numbers and on one CD. Some songs I can’t get out of my mind.

These days Mabon Dawud Quintet from Ethiopia is on the trail of Mulatu Astatke. Tramp Records provides the first release of “Abeba” – a funky and stoic track in Amharic mother tongue sung by a high male lamenting voice.

Even more haunting is “Ain’t Gonna Wait Too Long” by Thomas Meloncon. The self-taught guitar player recorded this protest song at the age of 20. Voice, guitar, congas and double bass are plenty enough for a heavily pushing song complaining that black man’s slavery isn’t gone after 400 years. Artist, poet and civil right activist Meloncon (alias Muntu Mwaminifu) wrote and directed theatre and radio plays. His works are collected at Texas Southern University in Houston. “Ain’t gonna wait too long” probably is his earliest artistic outing, he just had left school in 1968.

The compilation concludes with a song by Now, a band no one outside Munich might know. “Easy Tune for Dancing” can be found on a record of cultural and concert location Feierwerk form 1990. It really was a surprise to hear the quintet of trumpeter Konstantin Kern and Klaus Pfister on sax playing Afro-Cuban jazz that easily and nonchalant. If Dizzy Gillespie turned up with his bent trumpet and Lalo Schifrin sat in like he did on “Gillespiana Suite” I wouldn’t be astonished!

Martin Bürkl, Basement Jazz Radio Show, Munich

Key selling points:
– most of the songs appear on CD/digital for the very first-time
– the vinyl LPs come with a full album download code
– 8-page CD-booklet and vinyl LP contain detailed liner notes

ToCo – Right Place

TRACKLISTING
A1. Right Space
A2. Supa Fly
B. Sweet Elisa

ToCo is a special collaboration between two accomplished artists and friends.
Tobi Neumann and Marco Unzip. The projects special sound hovers over top of early
analogue electronic music and modern digital binary soul.
“Right Space” is the ambassador ToCo have selected to introduce the listener to its distinct
flavour of modern bass use and intricate rhythm programming. Gliding you along its path like a
manta ray through the open sonic ocean.
“Supa Fly” works things to a funkier more optimistic place that plays with cascading poly
synth keys and luscious layers of synth detail.
“Sweet Elisa” is the extended player crown jewel that brings you back to Kraftworkian
moments in German electronic expression. With complex layers of analogue wash and tone
backed by a basic retro style modular rhythm section, that just acts as a simple guide through
the tracks dimensions of synth and sweet subtle guitar.
You can truly hear Tobi’s 20 years of experience engineering and Marco’s 20 years of taste
making in the production here. Truly a future classic of an EP
ToCo Biog
ToCo is Tobi Neumann and Marco Unzip. Following a chance meeting the Electro Splash
open air festival in 2007, the pair became fast friends and music partners, eventually debuting
as a duo at Sven Väth‘s birthday party at Cocoon Club Frankfurt in 2010. The gig likewise saw
their initiation as producers when they pressed their track “I Want My Shoe Back” on a
dubplate as a gift Väth, the endeavour lead to regular collaborations and DJ performances as
ToCo.
Tobi Neumann has a substantial musical background. Growing up in Vienna, his early years
were filled with classical music, an influence that lead him to pick up both piano and guitar. A
move back to his native Germany inspired a funk-rock and jazz interest that drove Tobi to join
several bands and perform on-stage. The 90s welcome his focus shift to electronic music,
audio engineering, and the world of synthesizers. A decade passed with Neumann honing his
skills as a sound engineer and composer for film, soundtrack and television, but his heart was
in electronic music: he built up a recording studio, and produced for the likes of Miss Kittin,
Peaches, Chicks on Speed, and Bananafishbones. In 1998, Neumann founded the pivotal
house event Flokati at the Munich‘s legendary Ultraschall. From there, he joined up with the
Cocoon crew in Ibiza and Frankfurt, hitting the road and never looking back.
Marco Unzip, meanwhile, grew up in south of Italy. His love for music grew alongside his
experiences as a bass player in the 80s darkwave bands of his youth. A move to Bologna in
1993 lead him to discovering electronic music. It was love at first listen, Marco began playing
records, promoting, and throwing underground parties including the legendary Playhouse, an
event he ran at Kindergarten Club for more than a decade. Thanks to Kindergarten and a
subsequent residency at the iconic Cocorico from 2007 to 2013, Marco has established
himself among the scene’s elite. In 2008, he took the next step in music promoting and
founded the roBOt festival, one of Europe‘s most innovative and respected events for
electronic music culture and digital arts. Along with a collective of talented producers in
Bologna, Marco founded Random Numbers, a digital label which had his first release in
November 2014
ToCo work out of the Apollo Studio in Berlin, composing and producing in live jam settings
using instruments from Neumann’s personal collection: analogue synthesizers, drummachines,
effect-units and a sophisticated modular-system.

Brisa Broche – Invisible 1

Invisible 1’ it’s sometimes good to keepadmirers at a distance. For her “come-back” album, Brisa Roché follows this rule to the letter.
After four albums in France, she returned to her native California — not the one with six-lane highwaysand palm trees, but the one up north, where mountain lions roam, and sequoi as tower. There, hiddenin her home-studio, she channeled song after song, inspired by tracks arriving from producers all over the world. Some sent sound hoping to re-provoke songwriting in the vein of jazz-singer. Brisa freshly arrived in France the moment the Twin Towers fell, who haunted the stages of Parisian caves with a high shadowy voice, forcing journalists to compare her to Billie Holiday. Others sent what revealed a preference for the avant-gardism of “Mystery Man” off of her first record on Blue Note, that transported fans with pop as daring as it was sweet. Still other composers sent tracks they hoped would prolong the sound they loved in her hits “Whistle”and “Call Me”, from her psych-folk period.
But of course, Brisa did not revisit the past. She invented a future, a space-time exercise, creating songs across thousands of miles, across musical genres, where a voice springs as easily from a computer, an applauded stage, ora virgin forest.
The album INVISIBLE 1 is titled such because anything is possible when limitations imposed by a studio setting are discarded, when judgments and timidity are veiled by distance, when collaborations multiply across the waves, when intimacy with strangers makes art.

Caroline K – Now Wait For Last Year
Friday, March 25th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Caroline K – Now Wait For Last Year

Image: 1603281 Blackest Ever Black and Klanggalerie present the first ever vinyl reissue of Caroline K’s outstanding 1985 album, Now Wait For Last Year. This haunting, wistful work of post-industrial synthesizer music – the late Nocturnal Emissions co-founder’s only solo record – has accrued a fervent cult following over the past 30 years, and copies of the original pressing are today extremely rare and sought-after. Appropriately enough for an album concerned with the disruption of linear time – it takes its title from a Philip K. Dick novel concerning a highly addictive hallucinogenic drug, JJ-180, that induces time travel for its users – the music on Now Wait seems to exist firmly outside of it. Tags like industrial, minimal synth or proto-techno can’t really do justice to the richly cinematic sound-world that Walters describes: from the sustained ambient tension of sidelong opener ‘The Happening World’ to the future-primitive rhythms and stately piano flourishes of ‘Animal Lattice’, and the melancholic, deep-frozen synth sequences of ‘Chearth’. Fans of Wendy Carlos’s A Clockwork Orange, Chris Carter’s The Space Between, and early Detroit techno should pay special attention, but this searching, future-proof masterpiece demands to be heard by all.

Novos Baianos / Dom Salvador – Juventude Sexta E Sabado / Uma Vida

Image: 1602216 When Greg Caz and Deano Sounds teamed up to create The Brasileiro Treasure Box Of Funk
& Soul they created a collection of vintage Brazilian music that stretches across the scope of
funk, soul, and psychedelic.
Co-compiler and Brazilian music aficionado, Greg Caz says: “Without necessarily having a
central theme other than funky nuggets from the first half of the 70s, we believe this compilation
displays its own particular sense of logic, and that these songs ultimately all sound fantastic
together. Regardless of one’s familiarity, or lack thereof, with artists like Antonio Carlos & Jocafi,
Os Incríveis, Toni Tornado or Celia, the material on these 45s speaks its own truth and justifies
their inclusion here. Many of these were originally available as singles, while others were taken
from albums, but all are guaranteed to find their way into many DJ boxes and playlists.”
The stunning 45s from this set will now be available for individual sale. The series wraps up with
a split 45 featuring Novos Bainos haunting Jeventude Sexta E Sabado on the A Side – on the
flip, the cinematic sounding Uma Vida, the 1971 cut from Dom Salvador E Abolição

Adrian Younge – Something About April II
Saturday, December 12th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Adrian Younge – Something About April II

Image: 1601290 In the years since the release of Adrian Younge’s Something About April, he has been coined
America’s black genius: the evocation of analog vestige in a digital era. His majestic music has
garnered him reverence, likened to Ennio Morricone’s best work and the Beatles’ tenacity to create
new sounds. Fortuitously, Something About April has made an indelible impression on modern
vinyl heads and producers alike, being sampled by DJ Premier, Jay-Z, Common, 50 Cent and more.
The Something About April brand is an axiom to the modern “Breakbeat” and Linear Labs is happy
to announce its successor: Something About April II.
Recorded with Younge’s collection of rare instruments, Something About April II advances his
musical paradigm with enterprising concepts and grander compositions — it synthesizes the
boundaries between dark American soul and classic European cinema. With effervescent conviction,
Younge executes with an array of entrancing vocalists: Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) and Bilal
perform duets on “Step Beyond” and “La Ballade,” reminiscent of Serge Gainsborg and Jane Birkin,
Raphael Saadiq blends “Black Jazz” vocals with psychedelic soul on “Magic Music,” Israeli star,
Karolina, delivers haunting chants over concertos like “Hear my love” and “Winter is Here,” Loren
Oden croons as if the apparent ghost of Donnie Hathaway created one last love song, “Sandrine.”
Younge is the experimental spirit of the modernist vanguard, looking at the past to create the future.
What this album extrapolates, from vinyl culture, will become further magnified by its sampling
down the line. Something About April II will replace the former as a holy grail for producers and
collectors alike.

SIDE A:
Sittin’ By The Radio • Winter Is Here • Sandrine Step Beyond • Sea Motet • Memories Of War • Psalms
SIDE B: Magic Music • Ready To Love • La Ballade April Sonata • Hands Of God • Hear My Love Available from 22.01.2016

Gerra & Stone – DNT U / Chicago
Thursday, November 12th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gerra & Stone – DNT U / Chicago

Image: 1600841 Over the past year, Gerra & Stone have become one of the most exciting duos to take the genre’s forefront. Featuring across Ram and Program’s discography, they’re creating their own space, one held firmly by tight production standards and a refreshing musicality, seldom seen in newly emerging talent.

The single appeals to a diverse group of music listeners. Whether across the subs of London’s haunts, or the headphones of any technical music listener, these next two sonic cuts pedestal not only their understanding of a diverse sound design, but also their ability to conquer it.

‘Dnt U’ is a riddim which cuts and swerves between cascading breaks and instantly recognisable drum patterns. The junglist influences are given a stockiness by an LFO bassline and distortion, falling between amen and quaking sub. It shows a clear persona etched out by the two producers, one which has made them instantly recognisable from the outset.

The next up, ‘Chicago’ also brings an old school vibe whilst utilising more contemporary techniques. Flipping beat patterns draw you in, whilst metallic percussion drives you forward at an incredible speed. Switching up, it then drags you down a corridor of fluctuating bass notes and snapping hi-hats.

Adding a second instalment to an already impressive entree, this next output from the outfit prove their path is about to take another ascent. And with exciting new talent to come from the imprint… Once again, it’s time to get with the Program!

Gloria Ann Taylor – Love Is A Hurting Thing
Friday, October 9th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gloria Ann Taylor – Love Is A Hurting Thing

Image: 1597607 Amidst much anticipation from collectors, record stores, DJ’s and producers alike Gloria Ann Taylor’s musical output on Selector Sound have been compiled and will be presented in a deluxe triple-gatefold double LP package complete with photos and extensive liner notes.

Soul singer Gloria Ann Taylor has no rags to riches tale to tell. Her story is one of personal sacrifice, failed relationships, and missed opportunity. She was leading a hard knock life before being swept-up by the flash and promise of a marriage and business partnership with a successful record producer. She would be nominated for a Grammy, rub shoulders with James Brown and Bootsy Collins, and turn heads from Motown. But in the end she rejected professional singing, the music business, and the lifestyle that came with it. Thankfully for music lovers, before Gloria closed the doors on her singing career, she left us with some amazing soul songs. Deeply shaded by gospel roots, her haunting sound clearly comes from the gut. Gloria did not fake the funk.

Gloria was a partial owner of the Selector Sounds label, along with her husband/producer Walter Whisenhunt (previously a right-hand man to James Brown), and her brother Leonard. They released five Gloria Taylor singles between 1971 and 1977. They also released the three-song Deep Inside You EP, under the name Gloria Ann Taylor and Walter Whisenhunt’s Orchestra. In the studio Whisenhunt would work up a unique musical brew that mixed northern soul with exotic percussion and fuzzy psychedelic guitars. He moved Gloria through a range of tempos and stylings from ballads to disco. Her gritty vocal performance was set to orchestral arrangements creating a juxtaposition of grandeur and solace. The pinnacle of their collaborations has to be the jaw-droppingly epic EP version of “Love Is a Hurting Thing”, a chugging, string-laden disco track, that sounds like proto-Theo Parrish. Rene LaVice – Don’t Look Down / Air Force 1
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Rene LaVice – Don’t Look Down / Air Force 1

Image: 1599711 Since setting up home in London over a year ago, the ‘Canuck Don of Drum and Bass’ René LaVice continues to break the prototype with his own fresh take on the genre. He’s quickly becoming one of the stand out names in the game, proving his unbridled versatility whilst creating a history of releases that exemplify this talent.

So far his journey has seen him move into the Radio1 A-list, support bass-behemoths The Prodigy, win fans over at Download Festival, be one of the lucky few Drum and Bass DJs to push the genre at Glastonbury Festival 2015, whilst remixing diverse heavyweights such as Nero to Rae Morris and having tracks such as ‘Where My Ladies At’ become one of the most revered records to date within the game. And Rene yet again proves unstoppable with this next release. Vocals on lead track ‘Don’t Look Down’ are delivered by BullySongs in a playful yet powerful A-side with the trademark René LaVice sonics that we all know and love. Well known for his showmanship, ‘Don’t Look Down’ epitomises what René LaVice is about, tracks that globally detonate dance floors of any size.

And rolling out next, stands one of the most anticipated drum & bass tracks to line sets since its very first play. From cyberspace to the clubs, a baying crowd has been awaiting the release of ‘Air Force One’ and René has now delivered. Featuring René himself on vocals and a devilish half-time step intro, this record builds into the first drop and then propels you forward into all-out anarchy… raise up your 1’s people and prepare for G force bass.

René’s multidimensional approach to music making whilst tapping into different tempos is duly noted and with René being no stranger to dipping into a variety of genres ‘Human Safari’ feels like the perfect track to complete this EP. With a brand new groove, ‘Human Safari’ ties the EP together with its dropped BPM, tribal riff and haunting vocals. Originally written whilst watching a documentary on a Human Safari, René once again turns electronic music on its head and delivers a warning shot on how he sees his career continuing to grow.
