Strut present the first in a series of essential original LP reissues exploring rare and under-rated African, Latin and Caribbean music classics, curated by Duncan Brooker. In January 2017, the series kicks off with ‘Sugar Daddy’, an experimental highlife / disco outing by Nigerian highlife guitarist Joe King Kologbo.
Building his career as a composer and player with Eastern Star Dance Band at their residency at the Atlantic Hotel in Aba, Eastern Nigeria, Joe King Kologbo was forced to flee to Ghana when the Biafran War broke out in 1967. As his son Oghene recalls, “when war came, everything just scatter. He lost his house, everything.”
Joe King played with a variety of bands in Ghana including Real Ruby’s, a jazz highlife big band, before returning to Lagos in 1971. By the time he recorded the ‘Sugar Daddy’ LP for the tiny Electromat label in 1980, he was one of the older musicians on the circuit. Oghene Kologbo remembers, “My Mum used to say, ‘I hope you don’t go and play guitar everywhere and play around, don’t go and be Sugar Daddy!’ All my father’s friends nicknamed him ‘Sugar Daddy’ so he did the song in a fun way. He was a nice man. He never did ‘playboy’.” “Since he was based in the East during his early days, he was not as well known nationally as some of the other highlife players of the time,” continues
Oghene,”so it’s nice that this album is coming out again. It brings back good memories.”
Joe King Kologbo’s ‘Sugar Daddy’ is released in its original artwork and features new interviews with Oghene Kologbo and Sonny Akpan of The Funkees. The album comes remastered by The Carvery, with vinyl pressed at Pallas.

year or so, the world is graced with yet another stellar posthumous release,
a two volume beat tape from J Dilla, ‘Dilla’s Delights Vol. 1 and Vol. 2’,
It seems the powers that be are heeding the call for more joints from the
vault. And we’re not mad. Not even a little. Real hip hop fans can rejoice, in
a time of watered down trap rap and shiny suits. Will the wellspring ever run
dry? Are we soon to arrive at the end of this 11 year grace period with the
GOAT? Time will tell, but so long as the heat keeps coming, we’ll be quietly
sitting in the corner blessing the air and pouring one out for the late Dilla

And the best part about Dilla’s Delights Vol 1 & Vol. 2? Each one is on its
own limited color vinyl (Vol 1 on green and Vol 2 on purple), and a portion of

After twenty years at the center of the electronic scene, the enigma that is Chloé still stands. While Chloé has long transcended her image as the “DJ” behind legendary club night Pulp, headlining the Rex as well as clubs and festivals throughout Europe, Endless Revisions represents yet another deviation from rigid genre classification, deepening the often-linear perspectives on current music. A
rich and multi- faceted work, the artist’s captivating third album drifts from one mystery to the other, harkening back to philosopher Theodor W. Adorno’s maxim: “the task of art today is to bring chaos into order.” Seven long years in the making, the follow-up to One in Other is only the third fulllength by the artist, whose high standards translate into scarcity: “I did wait a while to make this album,” she confirms, “because I prefer not to impose deadlines on the full-lengths. To do so would stifle my creativity. Over the past few years, people have come up to me with interesting collaborations. I composed the score for Lidia Terki’s feature Paris La Blanche, worked with the Ircam for a live interactive installation, reinterpreted Steve Reich with percussionist Vassilena Serafimova… These opportunities forced me to leave my studio and encounter other people’s universes, which allowed me to grow. So today, I feel like I have new things to express.” Now that she has set up her new label, Lumière Noire, and eleased afew EPs over the last year (by the likes of Il Est Vilaine and Sutja Guttierrez), the time felt right for the producer to come up with a new opus: “the label was born out of a desire for emancipation, for self-assertion. Lumière Noire was the push to finish this new full length.” This third LP serves up Chloé’s music in its finest form – music that eschews the well-trodden paths of delight and seduction in favour of an experimental sensibility that puts motion before emotion. The title, Endless Revisions, refers to the constant work that goes into the gestation of the artist’s inner landscapes before they can be displayed for the audience. This sensory experience also serves as a mirror that she hangs for herself, each resulting track providing another step toward emotional equilibrium. Each song on Endless
Revisions is a stepping stone across the stream of consciousness, a way to cross over into the mechanics of soul-searching. Is this what the work of songwriting represents for Chloé? “I feel like I found myself on this album“ she replies without hesitation. “When the world changes around you, you can’t just stay as you were twenty years ago. The idea with this new label, this new album, is to look towards the future. This album represents who I am now, as I’m opening up to new horizons.” The producer continues to display a subtle, expert handling of electronic abstraction, and the tact and contact that have been present since her first EP, Erosoft, remain her prime vectors. And, while the album’s thirteen tracks each has its own radically unique mood, this intentional shuffling seeks to tell a story – albeit a cryptic one: “that’s what the LP format should allow for. I think of the sequencing of the tracks as I would a DJ mix.” Graceful yet troubling, the centerpiece The Dawn offers over ten minutes of zero-gravity bliss, inhabited by a mysterious voice. The musical pendant to the Chloé X Ircam sound installation, created for the prestigious Parisian musical research institute Ircam, The Dawn was also mixed in 3-D binaural sound in collaboration with the French state radio’s team of sound engineers. This sophisticated sonic approach, which pits cutting-edge technology against analog textures, runs throughout Endless Revisions: “we often think that the technological aspect is out to kill the emotional dimension, but sometimes it’s quite the opposite, and this is one example. The Dawn actually starts with a cassette tape sound effect, to establish a contrast with today’s technology. This music tells a story, but it’s a very ancient one, best listened to on a crackly old vinyl record, or a cassette tape.” Along with the deep, cerebral The Ultimate High, The Dawn is probably the only cut on the record that retains an obvious link to techno, as Chloé made the choice to sidestep the beat tunnels that usually form the backbone of the genre’s other outings.

Buddy Terry – Awareness (Gatefold/LP+MP3)
Friday, August 18th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Buddy Terry – Awareness (Gatefold/LP+MP3)

Image: 1610854 Following the highly-acclaimed release of FEELING GOOD and INNER PEACE compilations, WEWANTSOUNDS is delighted to announce the reissue of two superb classic albums in our new MAINSTREAM RECORDS ORIGINAL CLASSICS series. The releases will be crammed with bonus material. WEWANTSOUNDS has gone back to the original negative to reconstruct the original artworks and will add many jaw dropping never-seen photo sessions and CD Bonus material with new liner notes. LPs will be released in glorious gatefold sleeves.

Awareness is Buddy Terry’s first album for Mainstream Records out of the three he recorded for Bob Shad’s label. This is pure undiluted spiritual jazz both deep and funky. Prior to that Terry had recorded a couple of soul jazz albums for Prestige Record, “Electric Soul” in 1967 and “Natural Soul” in 1968. He then went under the radar until the recording of this album, an undisputed buried treasure Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue.

1971 saw him picked up by the ever active Bob Shad who had just decided to produce a new crop of young jazzmen in tune with the sonic revolution of the time with John coltrane’s Eastern influences and Miles Davis’ experiments drawned from the music Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone.

Awareness is a pure result of this incredible blend which saw labels like Black Jazz or Strata East transform jazz into a hip and cool genre adorned by the Woodstock generation. Featuring a glittering line up composed of Strata East co-founder Stanley Cowell on piano and Rhodes, Cecil Bridgewater on Trumpet, Buster Williams and Victor Gaskin on bass, Roland Prince on guitar, Mickey Roker on drums and a young Mtume on percussion.

Together they play a superb mix of deep and funky jazz in the best tradition of the genre. Both hypnotic (Kamili) and funky (check Cowell signature tune Abscretions), the album is a pure delight graced by Shad’s tight production values. It will ravish all lovers of early 70s spiritual jazz.

Buddy Terry recorded another two great albums for Mainstream and played on Art Blakey superb Child’s Dance from 1972 gracing the record with his wonderful soprano sax playing. A great player worth (re)discovering. This release will be augmented by never-seen session photos by Raymond Ross as two CD bonuses in the form of two single versions of “Babylon” and “Stealin’ Gold” well as new liner notes by French journalist Jacques Denis (Liberation/Superfly)

Alec Mansion – Alec Mansion
Tuesday, June 13th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Alec Mansion – Alec Mansion

Image: 1610514 A sublime slice of boogie-funk, Alec Mansion has steadily gained the status of a “crate-digging classic”. Accordingly, it has been near-impossible to unearth a physical copy in good condition for many years. Be With is delighted to present the first ever vinyl reissue, remastered in time to grace the discerning terraces and boat parties of the coming summer months.

Originally released in 1983, the LP arrived with impeccable credentials, programming duties were handled by Dan Lacksman (the brains behind Telex, the “Belgian Kraftwerk”) whilst production came from Marc Moulin (of jazz-rock fusion heroes Placebo). At the time its merits were mainly praised by radio and studio heads. Today, Mansion’s masterpiece is lauded by boogie aficionados from Liege to Los Angeles.

It was during a stay in Chicago that the Belgian took inspiration from the communal spirit and sheer power of black American funk. In a recent interview with Vice’s Noisey, Mansion cited The Whispers, Prince and Chic as key touchstones in his quest for his desired sound. Upon finessing his idiosyncratic European style of funk for his self-titled sophomore LP, Mansion flirted with perfection.

Showcasing a staggering run of instant (non)-hits, this sonically stunning album can be viewed as both of its time and, yet, aeons ahead of it.

Amongst the myriad highlights, “Ou Es-Tu” recalls neck-breaking G-Funk roughly a decade before it was ubiquitous. Its swagger conjures the fantasy sound of Dam-Funk producing fellow Francophone masters Phoenix, circa United, all buzzing synths and snapping drums underpinning vocals that ooze European style.

The glorious synth-workout “Dans L’eau De Nice” boasts an inordinate amount of instrumental flourishes. Augmented by Mansion’s vocal class, it still feels tight and perfectly formed like all timeless pop music, and it has since become infamous as a joyous end-of-night singalong hit for house parties.

The startlingly confident “Marche” borders on the arrogant, its sun-drenched cool inviting both awe and irresistible movement. “Quand Je Serai Grand” blasts lazer-guided synth washes over an undeniable groove that would’ve made Nile Rodgers swoon as he prepped Like A Virgin.

The acid squelch that propels the strutting “Laid, Bête, Et Méchant” delivers infectious bounce with enviable abandon whilst the fantastically wonky “Trop Triste” garnered renewed attention after featuring on Zaltan’s beloved Quartier Choc mixtape.

On the rare occasions it appears on the secondary market, it commands eye-watering figures. A record that has eluded even the most seasoned of vinyl freaks, this officially licensed reissue enables a wider audience to now discover its undoubted genius. Dovetailing neatly with the recent interest in forgotten boogie and obscure Euro-pop, this timely reappearance of a certified lost treasure is sure to be one of the summer’s essential releases. As sophisticated and multi-layered as the best of the genre, this is highly recommended if you dig for analogue boogie/synth-funk as well as the more leftfield elements of slick 80s pop.

The original artwork of both jacket and sumptuous, full-colour inner sleeve has been faithfully restored, the latter featuring Mansion’s memorable lyrics emblazoned across the pleasing jazzy early 80s design. Sonically, Simon Francis’ deft mastering adds clarity and muscle throughout and, as ever, it has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g.

“I was 13 when I first heard “Boogie Nights” by Heatwave on a children’s TV show called Multicoloured
SwapShop and it started a love affair with disco music that has lasted all my life. There’s so much to love in
disco. 40 years later I still hear plenty of sample tracks based around disco records but what I don’t come
across much of is actual original new material made to the disco blueprint.” – Joey Negro
It’s hard to find enough superlatives to describe just how influential and prolific Dave Lee, aka Joey Negro, has
been over the last three decades. One of music’s major proponents of soulful, disco-tinged, vocal records and
without question instrumental is its development and popularisation, no-one treats a loop, groove or hook with
as much care and attention as Joey Negro.
Whether you realise it or not, Joey Negro productions have more than likely been soundtracking your life.
Throughout the 90s and 00s right up until today, he has produced an astonishing number of records and
remixes under various names and for some of the world’s biggest and greatest artists. Grace Jones, Diana
Ross, Deep Dish, Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey, Tears For Fears, Ultra Nate, Masters At Work, Roy Ayers, Blaze,
Roger Sanchez: across both underground and pop music, the list goes on, contributing to one of the most
impressive discographies in music, irrespective of genre.
Throughout his career, disco has been a key ingredient of the Joey Negro sound, and alongside the likes of
Nile Rodgers, Daft Punk, Jamiroquai and Dimitri From Paris, he’s one of the few artists to have been keeping
the disco fire burning.
Produced With Love is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released, and the first for more than 20
years. And as the electronic music scene threatens to be overrun with faceless, bland and forgettable
productions, Produced With Love proves that dance music with character still exists. And rather than rely on
sampling older records, the overwhelming majority of music is newly recorded: a real rarity when it comes to
modern disco and indicative of the level of detail involved in the project.
During his career, Joey Negro has helmed a staggering number of acclaimed compilations and remix albums,
including Defected’s In The House and House Masters series, Remixed With Love, Disco Not Disco and Kings of
House: a haul not very few producers can lay claim to. Most recently, last year’s Electro compilation was
incredibly well-received, while Remixed With Love 2 – which included exclusive reworks of Robert Palmer,
Grace Jones and Christopher Cross all from the original master tapes – proved that JN’s powers were as sharp
as ever, with the collection going on to be Traxsource’s best-selling of 2016, reaching top 30 on iTunes album
chart, and also being named DJ Mag’s compilation of the year.

And so, back to the small matter of Produced With Love. Album opener ‘Prove That You’re Feeling Me feat.
Diane Charlemagne’ is without question one of the catchiest and most urgent disco records produced in the
last decade. Evoking the great Nile Rogers and Chic at their funkiest, it trips along on an exquisite bassline with
orchestral strings and Charlemagne’s vocal lending the record a truly timeless quality.
“Unfortunately between starting and finishing the project the supremely talented Diane Charlemagne, the
singer/songwriter who I co-wrote many songs with over last 10 years very sadly passed away. We had a great
working relationship, which was both fun and honest. Most of my final collaborations with Diane, ‘Overnight
Sensation’, ‘Prove That You’re Feeling Me’ and the partly re-written remake of ‘Must Be The Music’ are on this
album.” – Joey Negro
R&B and house music mainstay Linda Clifford narrates on ‘Won’t Let Go’, a deep house cut that celebrates
musical escapism, whilst ‘It’s More Fun To Compute’ – an unlikely cover – is a fully orchestrated disco rework of
Dusseldorf’s finest.
Further highlights include a completely remade ‘Must Be The Music’ (one of Joey Negro’s best-known records),
which is utterly transformed from its previous incarnation, whilst things get both dubby and jazzy on the Arthur
Russell-evoking ‘Distorting Space Time’.

‘I Am Goodbye’ graces us with wondrous sound-design and drum patterns that are just as menacing as they

and vibraphone as well as an array of field recordings. The end result is remarkable proof of the concept
behind this album, interpreting denial in an unusually positive course of action allowing him to explore areas
of sound he had previously never visited.
A definite highlight here at Parachute and an exemplary release to kick off our 2017 schedule. The year
couldn’t have started any better!
‚I Am Goodbye’ is designed by Atilla Fidan and released on LP and digital formats.

Ralph MacDonald / Foxy – Jam On The Groove / Get Off Your..(D.Krivit Edits)
Saturday, January 14th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ralph MacDonald / Foxy – Jam On The Groove / Get Off Your..(D.Krivit Edits)

Image: 1608288 NYC Disco legend Danny Krivit returns to the editing block on behalf of seminal Miami Disco powerhouse TK Disco. With 45 years in the DJ game under his belt and having played endless gigs all over the world during that time it’s safe to say Mr.K knows exactly what he’s doing when it comes to the re-edit thing! With unprecedented access to TK’s vaults Danny has been turning in some stellar reworkings as of late and the cuts included on this latest instalment keep the quality sky high!

On the A-side Mr.K kicks off with a heavyweight edit of a stone cold b-boy / club classic! The legendary, late Ralph McDonald’s (RIP) ‘Jam on the groove’ has long been a staple source of nourishment for hungry samplers and it’s stripped back, calypso influenced percussion breakdowns have found themselves being cut up by numerous DJ’s at clubs and block parties since it’s original release in 1976. Here, Mr.K brings that killer breakdown right up front, rearranging the track in a way that gives us all the meat! This is a truly pared back edit, those with keen ears will recognise a wealth of samples that have been jacked from mr McDonald’s drum-kit. This is one cut you can either hustle to or head-spin to! Hot, hot, hot….

The B-side see’s Miami’s FOXY and their ‘Get off your aaah & dance’ get the Mr.K editing block treatment. Kicking off with some tight drums with a heavy Latin influence this cut rolls along so smooth, giving way to a super funky pairing of guitars and flutes. FOXY are another group whose catalogue has been plundered by sample savvy producers over the years. This particular track is Disco heaven, beautifully produced and arranged, it flows along and will certainly cause some dance-floor tremors! A track for dancers, 100%, gracefully tweaked by Mr.K in just the right way! Essential business!

Of course, Danny Krivit’s edits are always done in the proper manner, from the point of view of someone who has lived, breathed and played this music for the best part of 50 years. 100% legit re-edits, from Danny’s personal collection, remastered and released in conjunction with Henry Stone Music / TK Disco – Miami FL.

Edna Wright – Oops! Here I Go Again
Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Edna Wright – Oops! Here I Go Again

Image: 1607172 Edna Wright’s idiosyncratic “Oops!” is one of the most sublime vocal refrains in soul music history. Anchoring its host album’s leadoff cut, it sets the tone for a uniquely satisfying modern soul LP. Indeed, whilst many of its ilk come laden with filler, Wright’s one solo record is an exercise in elegant restraint, a concise killer.

Originally released in 1977 on RCA, this rare and sought-after album followed the 1973 disbanding of Edna’s much-loved Honey Cone. Produced by her husband, legendary producer/songwriter Greg Perry, the album was somewhat of a risk, a deep soul album released during the period when disco was altering the landscape of popular music. And perhaps inevitably, despite the stellar production and spine-tingling vocals throughout, the album glided gracefully under the radar, spawning only one single and seeing no chart action.

That single – the magnificent title-track – soon became a notorious rare groove stepper in its own right. However, in the years since, it has become a crate diggers classic. Its fame was elevated among hip-hop heads when Prince Paul memorably looped the shimmering intro when crafting the melodic hook for De La Soul’s late-summer-stunner “Pass The Plugs”, a wistfully melancholic back-porch nostalgia trip. And, more recently, Leon Vynehall liberally lifted the same intro for his sepia-tinged “Midnight On Rainbow Road” to augment the excellent Rush Hour compilation Musik For Autobahns 2.

Yet this album is so much more than its most famous song. An assuredly lean masterpiece from start-to-finish, the album features a further six dynamite tracks of warm, smooth soul. As such, it’s an impossible task to choose certain tracks to highlight alongside the mighty title track. Throughout, Edna’s strikingly mature vocals are wonderful, proudly stepping out with a sophisticated groove reminiscent of Jean Carn or Gloria Scott, whilst Greg Perry’s gorgeous string-drenched backdrops add a rich depth. So much so, many of the other tracks have been sampled by producers with impeccable taste, from 9th Wonder to The Alchemist for songs featuring Nas and Talib Kweli.

Following her glowing role in the acclaimed documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, we pray this long overdue reissue will allow further light to shine on Edna. Officially licensed and beautifully remastered for vinyl by celebrated engineer Simon Francis, it has been pressed on audiophile 180g vinyl for the first time and features the original iconic artwork. Each copy includes a printed inner sleeve with a sumptuous black & white photo, full lyrics and heartfelt notes from Edna herself.

Completing a fantastic triptych of LPs for
2016, Will Saul’s Aus Music is delighted
to announce a debut full length from
Youandewan. The Berlin based Brit’s
ten track ‘There Is No Right Time’ lands
in October 2016 and shows a very real
development of his deep house style.
Youandewan is Ewan Smith, a DJ
and producer who has quietly but
consistently gone about fomenting his
own tender brand of deep house. He
has been doing so since 2009 and most
recently settled on this label with tracks
that are shy but seductive, and full of
both motive and emotive forces.
This album stays true to that
narrative, but really sees the producer
finding his feet with his most
accomplished and elegant work to date.
Much of the music was sketched out
during a wintery Berlin three years ago.
Having left London, hungover from a
breakup, Smith found himself broke
and secluded in an apartment for four
months. All this lent the music he wrote
a melancholic vibe, one that nods to
the lonely nature of the job and to the
darker side of constant partying and all
that comes with it.
A swelling, expansive piece of
melodic atmospherics starts things
off, then the soft hues of some analog
chords bring a neon glow to the
weightless whirl of ‘Be Good To Me,
Poly’. Soaring synths marry with a raw
drum and bass combo on ‘Waiting for L’,
then ‘Time To Leave (Can’t Mix)’ resets
to a piano laced beatdown vibe that is
willfully wallowing. ‘10405 (Alice)’ is a
shimmering, crescendoing piece, and
from there the second half of the
album begins to take an upward and
optimistic swing through the floating,
graceful harmonies of ‘Our Odyssey’.
‘Something Keeps Me Real Quiet’ is a
concession to the floor with its rusted
electro slither, ‘Left On Lucy’ calls
upon friend Huerta for a flailing bit
of hi-tek soulful house Derrick May
would be proud of, and ‘Earnest Kelly’
nods to the ’80s with its stomping
retrosynthesis. Finally, ‘4D Anxiety’
allows all pent up emotion and energy
to dissipate via a playful hip-hop jam
effortlessly tapped out on an MPC.
Essentially, this is a listening album
that proves deep house done well
needn’t be reserved for the club. It is
vulnerable and musical, and stays with
you long after it finishes playing.

Brugnolini – Torossi – Musica Per Commenti Sonori (LP+CD)
Friday, August 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Brugnolini – Torossi – Musica Per Commenti Sonori (LP+CD)

Image: 1605763 Yet another collaboration between Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi, who also worked together on the masterpiece “Feelings”. “Musica per commenti sonori” consists of twelve amazing tracks that will excite lovers of the wildest funk, producers in search of rare breaks, and those with a penchant for the psycho-beat atmospheres of the sixties. One of the rarest library music releases ever, that’s never been re-released in any form until now!

“Musica per commenti sonori” is a cult series within the diverse world of Italian library music. In the late sixties and seventies, the small record label Costanza Records has published several releases precisely focusing on ‘background music’, including works of great composers such as Peppino De Luca, Roberto Pregadio, Franco Micalizzi, Vito Thomas, Giancarlo Thomas Puccio Roelens, Riccardo Luciani, and by the protagonists of this long-time due reissue: Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi.

The two musicians, who had also worked together on the masterpiece “Feelings” (1974), have often collaborated and delivered some of the best Italian library music of all time. “Musica per commenti sonori” is certainly one of the most interesting. On the two equally split sides of this LP, the first for Torossi and the second for Brugnolini (but it seems that this partition was exclusively dictated by legal demands), there are twelve amazing tracks that will excite lovers of the wildest funk, producers in search of rare breaks, and those with a penchant for the psycho-beat atmospheres of the sixties.

Among the most heated tracks featured on Torossi’s side, we can’t pass over the amazing “Sweet-Beat”, “Interrupted” (perhaps the best track of the album) and “Repetition” while “Polyphony”, “Motuproprio” and the closing track “Flyer” shine on Brugnolini’s. Virtually impossible to find, even at astonishing prices, this reissue puts back into the market one of the best examples of ‘The Italian Art of Library Music’: a genre worldwide envied and collected.

Bitori – Legend Of Funaná (LP 180g/Gatefold)
Friday, June 10th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Bitori – Legend Of Funaná (LP 180g/Gatefold)

Image: 1604412 Analog Africa No. 21 „BITORI“ – Legend Of Funaná (The Forbidden Music of The Cape Verde Islands) – In 1997, a quiet, unassuming man of 59 years old named Victor Tavares – better know as Bitori – walks into a studio for the very first time to record a masterpiece which many Cabo Verdean consider to be the best Funaná album ever made.

Bitoris musical adventure had begun long before this point. It was 1954 when he embarked on a journey across the seas to the island of Sao Tomé & Principe. The young man´s hope was to return to Cabo Verde with an accordion.

Following two years of hard labour Bitori had succeeded in saving enough money to acquire what was to become his most valued possession, his cherished instrument. The two month journey back to Santiago, his island of birth, proved time enough to master it. Self taught, Bitori developed his own style, an infectious blaze, that quickly caught the attention of the older generation. Before long Bitori was being asked to share his musical talents, igniting the local festivities around Praia with his music.

But not everybody welcomed the rural accordion-based sound. Perceived as a symbol of the struggle for Cape Verdean independence and frowned upon as music of uneducated peasants, Funaná was prohibited by the Portuguese colonial rulers. Performing it in public or in urban centres had serious consequences – often jail time and torture awaited musicians that were “caught in the act”. In light of such persecution the genre of Funaná began to slowly disappear.

In 1975 Cabo Verde achieved independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Along with Cabo Verde’s independence came a lifting of the ban placed on Funaná. The musical repercussions in Cabo Verde were plenty – many upcoming artists embraced Funaná, translating and adapting its musical form in new ways. It was not to be until the mid-1990’s, however, that Funaná in its traditional form was actually recorded.

It was a young singer from Tarafal, Chando Graciosa, who was to play a key role in this event. Upon hearing Bitori, Graciosa immediately felt drawn to Bitori’s unique playing style – a raw and passionate sound accompanied by honest lyrics that reflected the harsh reality of the Cabo Verdean working class. He eagerly approached Bitori suggesting they join forces and travel overseas with the objective of taking Funaná beyond its rural roots. The two of them, with others in tow, achieved their goal and travelled to Europe, introducing a receptive European audience to the vibrant energy of Funaná. Eventually Bitori returned to his beloved Cabo Verde. Graciosa opted to settle in Rotterdam in order to pursue his career – he vowed, however, to bring Bitori across to Holland at a later date to record an album.

In 1997 the time was ripe to immortalise the sound Bitori had shaped over a time span of four decades. Built around a formidable rhythm section, formed of drummer Grace Evora and bass player Danilo Tavares, “Bitori Nha Bibinha” was recorded. The recording catapulted Chando Graciosa to stardom, making him Cabo Verde´s No.1 interpreter of Funaná.

The success in Cabo Verde was phenomenal and Funaná rapidly gained the recognition it deserved, especially in urban dance clubs. Bitori´s songs quickly became standards – classics known and loved throughout the country. The musical success, however, was solely limited to the Cabo Verdean islands – until now!

Analog Africa is proud to contribute to the worldwide promotion of Funaná – the once forbidden sound of the Cabo Verde archipelago – by releasing a worldwide re-issue of Bitori and Chando Graciosa´s legendary recording. The release will herald Bitori´s first European tour taking place during the summer of 2016. Watch this space! And listen!

It’s 1981. Everything seems possible in the realms of music. The barriers between genres are
being willfully torn down, punk is discovering the synthesizer, the drum machine is replacing
the drummer and no idea is too absurd to pursue. The winds of change are blowing from New
York to London, Berlin and Tokyo and there’s a palpable, uninhibited spirit of optimism in the
air turning music industry on it’s head. People are experimenting with novel equipment,
bands are springing up like mushrooms, line-ups disband and regroup. A whole generation is
being inspired by a do-it-yourself mentality, creating an unprecedented knowledge of how to
produce music. Every artist seems to be full of ambition, conquering new frontiers whilst often
participating in several projects simultaneously. When today, we look back at this time it
appears as an unintelligible mess with no economic viability, but 30 years ago it was simply
the sheer desire for artistic freedom, self-fulfillment and the urge to have control over one’s
own creative work that was the driving force.
Let’s take the guitar player, Wolfgang Spelmanns. After leaving DAF (Deutsch Amerikanische
Freundschaft) in December 1980, his head was full of ideas and an exuberant compulsion to
express himself in as many ways as possible. A singular focus is impossible. One of these
endeavors is a visit to Werner Lambertz’s studio in Düsseldorf. While the first few takes, of what
later would become “Bewegliche Ziele”, are being recorded, the main object is putting
Lambertz’s self-designed modular percussion computer to the test. But the shenanigans don’t
end here. Soon after, Jaki Liebezeit, the drummer of Can, is invited to jam freestyle over the
programmed beats. New technologies and innovative methods have drawn the attention of
Liebezeit, challenging him to play as monotonously as if he were a machine himself (or a
computer in this case). It takes him less than 90 minutes to ad-lib two stunning drum tracks for
Spelmanns’ still nameless project. Spelmanns however, is not in a hurry to finish the tracks.
Unlike the bustling drummer, his focus has a much broader horizon. Instead he wanders off
and forms Mau Mau, a new band with his old flat mate and former partner in DAF, the bass
player and member of Düsseldorf group Fehlfarben, Michael Kemner. Consequently, the
recordings are left to the side and almost forgotten about.

Almost. Two years later, living in West Berlin, Spelmanns remembers the tapes and brings
them, along with his girlfriend and singer Claudia Sennlaub (alias Tabu), to the Caet Studio
on Kreuzberg’s Mehringdamm. Vocals and the guitar are recorded and in-studio synthesizers
are enthusiastically thrown into the mix allowing the two songs to finally take on a concrete
form. “Bewegliche Ziele” and “Schön Sein In Uniform” are mixed and mastered by none other
than Charly Steinberg, the founder of Steinberg GmbH and developer of one of the first DAWs
(Digital Audio Workstations), Cubase.
Having had mainly negative experiences with major labels (i.e. Polydor), and seeing how his
friends at Ata Tak music publishing, are swamped with bureaucracy and paperwork,
Spelmanns decides to independently press the record on four different-colored discs at Pallas
pressing plant. Totaling only 1000 copies, the records are released on the ad-hoc label
Delphin in early 1983 and are delivered straight to the door step of his apartment on
Pücklerstraße. Leaving the musician, although gaining ground by leaps and bounds in the art
scene, reduced to single-handedly supplying Berlin’s record stores with his release. No wonder
that only a few of the colorful discs find an audience and the potential success of Plaza Hotel
is all but nipped in the bud.
Amazingly, the record continues to be rediscovered time and again, throughout the years’
time. By a diverse mix of DJs and record collectors from all sorts of different countries, origins
and scenes. They all take a personal interest in “Bewegliche Ziele”. From die-hard NDW fans to
New Wave analysts and never-tiring sound explorers like the infamous, Dutch record collector
Tako Reyenga. It is him who plays one of these rare copies, sometime in 2010, in Düsseldorf of
all places, in the Salon d’Amateurs, one of the world’s hippest underground clubs, in front of a
broad-minded audience. In short “Bewegliche Ziele” (played on 33rpm instead of 45rpm)
becomes a signature tune not only at the Salon, but on dance floors of every boutique club
operating outside of mainstream territory all around the world. About the same time
Jazzanova member and co-founder of NOTES ON A JOURNEY, Stefan Leisering stumbles
across the 12” in a crate in Canada. Back in Berlin he plays his discovery to his buddy and
Jazzanova co-partner Alex Barck. Falling for the song’s magic as Leisering does, Barck
rearranges, what was perviously considered complete, the third edition of “Computer
Incarnations For World Peace” just to fit this exceptional tune into the already fine selection.
Spelmanns himself, now living in Bremen, working as a video artist and leading the Generic
Art Ensemble, definitely didn’t expect this to ever happen. Three decades after its initial
release “Bewegliche Ziele” is finally finding its listeners and revealing its long hidden spell. It’s
the same with “Bewegliche Ziele” as with a lot of this time period’s music long forgotten or only
released in a very limited capacity: Today, with hindsight, it gains new meaning and an
extensive resonance. Over the last few years Plaza Hotel’s skewness, the graceful peculiarity,
the courageous experimentalism is being explored by new and younger groups and can be
heard in current music again. Meaning “Bewegliche Ziele” could have easily be released in
2016. NOTES ON A JOURNEY thought the same and decided, that not only freaky record
collectors should be able to, for extortionate prices, enjoy this timeless, fascinating piece of
music on vinyl. So we have brought Plaza Hotel back to life, in all its glory. Available from 15.07.2016

Pete Josef – Remixes

Image: 1603320 Sonar Kollektiv press some key remix’s from Pete Josef on his next single.

TRACKLISTING
A1 – Hope (Will LV Remix)
A2 – Colour (Fabian Dikof Dub)
B1 – Spring At Last (The Black 80s Remix)
B2 –Colour (Potatohead People’s Lights Off Remix)

Last autumn the long-awaited debut “Colour” by Pete Josef saw its release on
Sonar Kollektiv. Now the first 12inch with four fantastic remixes arrives (the digital
release comes even with six of them).
The remix by British duo LV for “Hope” is the perfect kick-off and whets one’s
appetite for more. Their sensuous rework accommodates Josef’s voice
immaculately and lets the bassline vibrate as gracefully as a treetop in the vernal
wind.
Appropriately another duo, this one from Montreal, delivers an ultra smooth remix
for “Spring At Last”: The Black 80’s fortify herewith their claim to be the next hot
shit. Also a name to watch out for over the next few months is the one by Fabian
Dikoff. Everything he learned by his mentor Andre Lodemann is translated in his
work into an incredible, chameleonic vision of house music. To be heard on his
remix for “Colour” and its dub version.
Another remix for “Colour” comes all the way out of the prosperous Vancouver
scene by the Potatohead People. The “Lights Off” as well as the “Lights On”
remix are both gentle RnB with the emphasis on the snare and on the lovey-dovey
synth melody. All in all, exactly the sort of remixes not only Pete Josef was wishing
for, but also we as the listeners, to tune into this summer’s groove.

MF DOOM – Live From Planet X

Image: 1603767 Experience the exceedingly rare genius of an MF DOOM live
performance with these exclusive “straight from the soundboard”
audio recordings. Broadcasting from an undisclosed location, this
limited-edition vinyl pressing of “Live From Planet X” offers fans a
chance to own the most comprehensive glance into Doom’s lengthy
career available.
Debuting under the alias Zev Love X, DOOM first graced the world
of hip-hop on the 3rd Bass single “The Gas Face.” A couple years
later Zev re-emerged alongside his younger brother DJ Subroc, in
New York’s legendary KMD. The group’s first album Mr. Hood was
released in 1991 on Elektra Records but KMD was quickly dropped
from the record label when, in the wake of Subroc being killed by a
car, they returned in ‘93 with an unflinching attitude and an album
titled “Bl_ck B_st_rds”. Deeply affected by his brother’s tragic death,
while also carrying a grudge against the industry that screwed him,
Zev disappeared from the rap scene for five years. It wasn’t until
1999, that Zev suddenly reemerged, face masked, as MF DOOM
with his 1999 solo debut and underground classic “Operation:
Doomsday”.
Since then DOOM has completely reinvented the indie-rap landscape
with a string of offbeat projects under an array of monikers: Metal
Fingers, Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, Monsta Island Czars,
Madvillain, DangerDOOM, NehruivanDOOM, and more. “Live From
Planet X” includes over 50 minutes of live recordings spanning
Operation Doomsday, Madvillain, MM…Food?, and more.

• MF DOOM is one of the top-selling independent artists in hiphop history, but his life remains shrouded in mystery, and live performances are increasingly rare.
• “Live From Planet X” is a historic document: a fullly-realized, vibrant, engaging live stage performance from this enigmatic genius, captured in pristine audio at an important moment in his career.
• This is the first DOOM live record to ever be available on vinyl
