AKTR (pronounced actor), is a beat maker from Yokohama city sampling primarily 80s funk. With his familiar yet subtly unique and fresh approach, AKTR is commonly loved by both more hiphop leaning loop heads, and serious connoisseur consumers of Vaporwave alike. He somehow manages to consistently contribute a high level of bliss to this sample/collage culture (or whatever you want to label it) in a quiet yet powerful manner from his humble Yokohama apartment. We are very excited to be one of the stops in his creative journey and hope you will hear what we are hearing.

Lee Fields & The Expressions – Special Night (Instrumentals)
Tuesday, February 7th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lee Fields & The Expressions – Special Night (Instrumentals)

Image: 1608617 The instrumental version of the instant classic Special Night by Lee Fields & The Expressions.
There are a few terms that get thrown around loosely, two of which are legend and retro-soul. One of these fits Lee Fields hand and glove, one of these doesn’t fit at all. Very few people in music have both earned the status of legendary and continue to solidify it. 50 years in the game and only getting better, gaining more fans, and evolving his sound on each album, Lee is in fact a Living Legend.
This brings us to the misuse of the term “retro-soul” when talking about Mr. Fields. You don’t have to look far to find a younger generation emulating the essence and styles of an era the’ve only experienced through music and movies. It seems unfair to tag Lee with a term that implies imitation when he is part of the generation that actually defined the genre. Plain and simple, this is not that.
“Special Night” is a masterclass in soul music past and present.
“I feel that every human being’s purpose is to do what their inner voice says to do,” says Lee Fields. “And my inner voice, my driving force, wants me to put out music and keeping making better records.”
Produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions, Special Night was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. A sense of urgency, equal parts fun and inspiration, and a decent amount of beer and Jack Daniels were the driving forces during the sessions that produced Lee Fields & The Expressions latest offering.
Special Night is also the first record in the Expressions catalogue in which every song was written jointly by Lee Fields and The Expressions. “When I record, I make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I’m talking to my lady — literally, expressing the way I feel.” says Lee Fields. “You can tell if a song is real or not, and every moment I’m recording, those moments are real, this is a record about what people do in real life”. For one example, he cites the song “Work to Do,” which tells the story of “a guy going to counseling, drinking too much, apologizing to the old lady and trying to keep family together, doing the manly thing.” On “Make This World”, Lee makes a nod back to his early funk roots with a cautionary tale about the health of the planet.
The world was designed to last indefinitely,” says Fields. “We’re the only living species on Earth who can alter that process. I’m hoping that song has a chain reaction, helps somebody put into action whatever contribution they can to change what the world is going through.” As always, sticking to the formula but pushing the boundaries “Never Be Another You” from the first note doesn’t sound like something you would hear on a Lee record, that is until he starts singing anyhow. A low tempo ballad with a head nodding drum track, sparse piano lines, and all the space Lee needs to lay down what is sure to be one of the flyest love songs of 2017.
Whether tackling a tune about love lost, found, or broader topics like the state of humanity, Lee has a very unique and honest perspective that is on display with each unforgettable performance. Also, The Expressions have never been sharper, they, along with Lee, have created a collection of music on Special Night which holds court with pretty much any soul music that came before it.

Brand new label Odion livingstone, based out of Lagos, Nigeria, presents its debut release, a reissue of the sought after Nigerian disco LP rarity ‘Friday Night’ by Livy Ekemezie. “I was just out of senior secondary school and I wanted to make an album,” recalls Ekemezie. “I was into disco and funk at the time and I was looking for a bassdriven funky sound. The entire idea was to make an album that sounded like something made in London or the U.S. I tried to sound “American” but we ended up with something else: a mix of American and Nigerian.” ‘Friday Night’ was recorded at Goddy Oku’s Godiac 24-track recording studio in Enugu, one of the best studios
available in Nigeria at the time. “It took about 9 months to a year to make the album,” continues Ekemezie. “I financed it by myself so I had to resort to friends helping out with loans for session men and studio time. The original LP was released on blue vinyl and that idea came from William Onyeabor. We used his pressing plant and he sold the idea to me. It was different so I said ‘why not?’” The LP has been picked up by many in recent months as the demand for Nigerian disco originals has grown with the track ‘Delectation’ receiving an unofficial edit and DJs like Motor City Ensemble dropping the album into their sets. This first ever reissue of the LP
remains faithful to the original issue, remastered and pressed on blue vinyl. It features full original artwork along with new interviews with Livy Ekemezie and contributing musician Jules Elong by Odion Livingstone’s Temi Kogbe.

KEY POINTS:
– First ever reissue of sought after Nigerian disco original LP
– Blue vinyl edition, echoing the original release which was pressed at William Onyeabor’s vinyl plant

Chico Mann & Captain Planet – Night Visions (2LP)
Thursday, January 19th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Chico Mann & Captain Planet – Night Visions (2LP)

Image: 1608323 Night Visions is a collection of stories which dance alive over an infectious blend of Afro-Latin rhythms and contemporary dancefloor beats. Told by a variety of characters, drawn from the vibrant imagination of Chico Mann, these stories take place in an endless night, where we move through dimly lit clubs, jungle moonlight, pitch black desert plains, and the internal shadows of personal darkness. While the characters often stumble and search blindly in the dark, the persistent presence of a distant light provides an underlying direction and hopefulness to all the songs. Captain Planet’s production, informed by his regular crowd-moving DJ sets, keeps the album sounding effortlessly danceable & contemporary. Meanwhile, Chico’s vocals have an instant classic appeal, hinting at old Cuban rumba and vintage Afrobeat LP’s. The two are aided by guest vocals from regular collaborators Kendra Morris & Brit Manor, as well as some talented friends who contributed additional horns, guitar & marimba.

Night Visions highlights the creative symbiosis of two of the biggest names in contemporary alternative Latin sounds. The result is a truly unique album that speaks as much to listeners who don’t understand Spanish as it does to old abuelos. The feelings and rhythms that flow through these songs are universal, appealing to hearts and hips all around the world.

Chico Mann has created a musical time machine that simultaneously fuses the sounds of 1970s Afrobeat, 1980s Freestyle and Afro Cuban in a hybrid beast of culture and tone. Its the big ‘what if’ Freestyle, Afrobeat & Afro Cuban converged and hit the mainstream for an army of Chicos to pick up where Stevie B, TKA, George Lamond, Sa-Fire, Information Society, Noel, and Cult Jam, and Expose left off. Chico’s choruses of multi-layered vocals with funky guitar lines helps to cool off the heat created between the bass and rhythm… creating a unique conversation of color and value that pays homage to the past but raises the bar for the future.

Captain Planet is a world travelling DJ & music producer who blends global roots music styles with forward-thinking hip-hop, dancehall and electronic beats. After cutting his teeth in the competitive New York City club scene, he went on to host a popular radio show on WNYU Radio, and started the globally renowned music blog www.MixtapeRiot.com. He has released 3 full-length albums featuring his trademark “Gumbo Funk” sound on Bastard Jazz Recordings, and can be heard on the soundtracks to multiple popular TV shows such as “Orange Is The New Black”, “Entourage” and “CSI:NY” to name a few. In 2016, his song “Un Poquito Mas” featuring Chico Mann was featured in a major Honda ad campaign and passed a million plays on Spotify. The success of that song, in conjunction with Chico Mann relocating to Los Angeles, encouraged the two artists to focus on a full collaboration album together.

– Uptown Syndicate Band was formed in Norman,Oklahoma May 1971. The band spanned nine years and had nearly 50 members. Uptown were renowned for high energy performances of Funk, Rhythm and Blues with soulful ballads mixed in

Uptown was born out of the fraternity and sorority parties at Oklahoma University, especially the Alpha-Phi-Alpha and as their popularity grew, encompassing campuses all over. Considered locally as the top show bands rivaling the Gap Band of Tulsa, yet still only managed to record 2 solitary singles, probably due to a hard touring regime. The group consisted of a powerful horn section, two strong vocalists, and a serious rhythm section that would have matched JBs, The fact they never recorded a few Lps is a crying shame, but here we have their 4 recordings in their delightful and varied glory

Various – James Brown’s Funky People (Part 2)
Friday, December 23rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – James Brown’s Funky People (Part 2)

Image: 1607823 As music fans know, James Brown wasn’t just the greatest funk
and soul singer the world has ever seen – he was also a musical
visionary and businessman, who surrounded himself with
geniuses who made him better and pushed him further.
From horn masters Maceo Parker and Pee Wee Ellis to vocalists
Lyn Collins and Bobby Byrd, Brown was a musical A & R master,
restless and always looking for the next big thing. Most times, that
would manifest in the latest James Brown smash under his own
name. But not always. His stable of talent was overflowing in the
‘60s and ‘70s, and, thankfully, the tape machine in his studio was
always rolling.
Originally released in 1988, during the era of hip-hop’s golden age
of sampling, it’s no surprise that just about every note heard in this
incredible collection has been used on not one but multiple rap
classics. Which, at the time, was proof of Brown’s (and his crew’s)
staying power. But we’re almost three decades beyond those days
now, and it has lost none of its musical potency.
Diving deeper into the vaults than the also-incredible Part 1 of the
Funky People series, there is not a weak track in the bunch. Moving
beyond well-known JBs cuts, things get interesting from the get-go
with Bobby Byrd’s monumental groover “I Know You Got Soul.”
Hank Ballard and Marva Whitney also enter the fray, leading the
way to Myra Barnes’ emotional and powerful “Message From The
Soul Sisters (Parts 1 & 2)” and Lyn Collins’ slow, smoldering cover
of Isaac Hayes’ “Do Your Thing,”
Politics even get the funky soul treatment, with Fred Wesley & The
JBs’ “You Can Have Watergate But Gimme Some Bucks And I’ll Be
Straight” and “I’m Paying Taxes, But What Am I Buying?” And it
should not be overlooked that Maceo & The Macks’ instrumental
workout “Soul Power ‘74” even features a proto-sampling snippet
from MLK’s “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop” speech from 1968.
This is another amazing collection of James Brown’s funky friends,
without one second of filler, brought to you as a glorious 2-LP
gatefold by your friends at Get On Down.

Heltah Skeltah – Midnight Madness
Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Heltah Skeltah – Midnight Madness

Image: 1607173 To celebrate this year’s Record Store Day/Black Friday, Coalmine
Records is pleased to release a special-edition 7-inch version of
Heltah Skeltah’s previously digital-only slapper, “Midnight Madness,”
featuring DJ Revolution.
As fans of the duo already know, the circa-2009 track is pure flames,
and brimming with hilarious bad-guy lyricism from Ruck (aka the late
Sean Price), and his partner in rhyme, Rock. The two absolutely let
loose over Shuko’s funky instrumental, as Ruck drops concrete flows
while Rock communicates with animals.
And that’s just the A-Side. On the B-Side, you’ll find the haunting
remix produced by the Grammy-winning, M-Phazes. Fans of his work
may recognize this joint from Coalmine’s 2012 remix compilation,
‘Phazed Out.’
The record itself will be sold in a plain 45 sleeve, but the donut
contains the work of acclaimed designer, Joe Buck, who embraced
the 1980 released cult movie of the same title, which also serves
as the track’s theme. On each side, you’ll find references and
illustrations central to both the film, and the track, from the sketch
of Leon the Game Master on Side-A, to M-Phazes ‘Good Gracious’
tagline on Side-B.
Both tracks are now available for stream and download, while the
limited-edition 45 will be available as a RSD/Black Friday exclusive,
via Coalmine Records. Let the madness begin…again.

A. Midnight Madness
B. Midnight Madness (M-Phazes Remix)

• Released in limited quantities exclusively for RSD/Black Friday
2016
• This release marks the first time that either track has been
made available in vinyl format

Sonny Knight And The Lakers – Sooner Or Later
Friday, October 21st, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sonny Knight And The Lakers – Sooner Or Later

Image: 1607114 Vitality is defined as the power to live or grow, and perseverance pertains
to the qualities of moving forward when an obstacle stands in your way.
The music of soul man Sonny Knight brims with these essential life traits
because he exudes them. Along with his 7-piece powerhouse band,
The Lakers, the 68 year-old retired truck driver has created a sound that
extends much deeper than throwback soul.
After the band’s 2014 debut album, I’m Still Here, came to fruition quicker
than anyone expected, Sonny Knight and The Laker’s released a live
double album the following year. Since then they’ve been crisscrossing
the globe bringing their hard-hitting sound to theaters, performing arts
centers, festivals, and night clubs. Now, the band’s sophomore studio
set, Sooner Or Later, explores themes of overcoming adversity, love
found, love lost, and societal observation.
By focusing less on so-called groove makers and more on the
songwriting process, Knight and company harnessed the power of the
different genres that came together to shape what we have come to
know as soul music over the last 50+ years. Gospel, country, and blues
were all melded into a record that takes you on a journey through life’s
questions and emotions via nine originals and a cover of Lonnie Mack’s
“Why.”
Knight’s vast array of life experiences inform a worldview that give him
a unique perspective on the song writing, expressive, and storytelling
process. While he was enamored with gospel music during his youth,
which eventually led him to recording his first single in 1965, he soon
found himself exploring other opportunities. From a deployment in
Vietnam to a job as a long haul trucker, that it hasn’t been a linear path
has made him a more attuned performer. Combining this hard-earned
experience with a vivacious band whose members are half his age, the
songs and performances captured on Sooner Or Later are a perfect
blending of observation, promise, and energy.

Hannah Williams & The Affirmations – Late Nights & Heartbreak
Friday, September 30th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Hannah Williams & The Affirmations – Late Nights & Heartbreak

Image: 1606476 Record Kicks präsentiert mit Stolz das neue Album von Hannah Williams & The Affirmations. Aufgenommen wurde “Late Nights & Heartbreak” im Quatermass Studio London, dem Hauptquartier der britischen Kultband Heliocentrics. Produziert hat es deren legendärer Produzent und Drummer Malcolm Catto, der bereits für Mulatu Astatke (“Inspiration Information”), Orlando Julius (“Jaiyede Afro”) und Melvin Van Peebles (“The Last Transmission”) an den Reglern saß und ansonsten regelmäßig mit Künstlern wie Floating Points, Quantic, DJ Shadow und Madlib arbeitet.

Stimmen:
“Hannah Williams and Malcolm Catto is a musical match made in heaven. This album delivers some serious funky nuggets!” – Craig Charles (The Craig Charles Funk&Soul Show BBC6)
“Hannah Williams & The Affirmations have served up another heady brew of super heavy funk and soul guaranteed to hit your head, heart and feet where it counts. Superb stuff” – Paul Osborne (Shindig Magazine)
“A touch of sheer class!” – Emrys Baird (Blues & Soul Magazine)

Lee Fields & The Expressions – Special Night
Saturday, September 24th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lee Fields & The Expressions – Special Night

Image: 1606607 There are a few terms that get thrown around loosely, two of which are legend and retro-soul. One of these fits Lee Fields hand and glove, one of these doesn’t
fit at all. Very few people in music have both earned the status of legendary and continue to solidify it. 50 years in the game and only getting better, gaining more
fans, and evolving his sound on each album, Lee is in fact a Living Legend. This brings us to the misuse of the term “retro-soul” when talking about Mr. Fields.
You don’t have to look far to find a younger generation emulating the essence and styles of an era the’ve only experienced through music and movies. It seems
unfair to tag Lee with a term that implies imitation when he is part of the generation that actually defined the genre. Plain and simple, this is not that. “Special
Night” is a masterclass in soul music past and present.
“I feel that every human being’s purpose is to do what their inner voice says to do,” says Lee Fields. “And my inner voice, my driving force, wants me to put out
music and keeping making better records.”
Produced by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck, and brilliantly performed by the Expressions, Special Night was written, recorded, mixed, and mastered
entirely to tape in three weeks at the legendary Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. A sense of urgency, equal parts fun and inspiration, and a decent amount
of beer and Jack Daniels were the driving forces during the sessions that produced Lee Fields & The Expressions latest offering.
Special Night is also the first record in the Expressions catalogue in which every song was written jointly by Lee Fields and The Expressions. “When I record, I
make every song like I actually mean it. I mean every word I say. On Special Night I’m talking to my lady — literally, expressing the way I feel.” says Lee Fields.
“You can tell if a song is real or not, and every moment I’m recording, those moments are real, this is a record about what people do in real life”. For one example,
he cites the song “Work to Do,” which tells the story of “a guy going to counseling, drinking too much, apologizing to the old lady and trying to keep family
together, doing the manly thing.” On “Make This World”, Lee makes a nod back to his early funk roots with a cautionary tale about the health of the planet. The
world was designed to last indefinitely,” says Fields. “We’re the only living species on Earth who can alter that process. I’m hoping that song has a chain reaction,
helps somebody put into action whatever contribution they can to change what the world is going through.” As always, sticking to the formula but pushing the
boundaries “Never Be Another You” from the first note doesn’t sound like something you would hear on a Lee record, that is until he starts singing anyhow. A
low tempo ballad with a head nodding drum track, sparse piano lines, and all the space Lee needs to lay down what is sure to be one of the flyest love songs of
2017.
Whether tackling a tune about love lost, found, or broader topics like the state of humanity, Lee has a very unique and honest perspective that is on display with
each unforgettable performance. Also, The Expressions have never been sharper, they, along with Lee, have created a collection of music on Special Night which
holds court with pretty much any soul music that came before it.

Northern soul boy, crate digger and tastemaker, Keb Darge is a name which needs no introduction to lovers of rare music the world over. His ‘Legendary Deep Funk’ night at Soho’s seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo’s introduced obscure dance-floor soul music to an eager London club crowd, sparking a global appetite for raw, visceral funk. Keb’s search for rare ‘45s took him across the globe, obsessively searching dollar bins, private collections and in some cases, artists homes to discover hidden gems recorded by local bands on regional record labels and pressed in tiny quantities. The rarity of the music combined with Keb’s exquisite ear and DJ ability meant that these records quickly became highly collectible (not to mention expensive) and even made ‘deep funk’ a recognized genre all its own. Keb’s passion paved the way for the modern funk revival, spearheaded by bands like The New Mastersounds & Quantic, even hitting the pop charts with the likes of Mark Ronson.
In 1997 BBE released the first of three compilation albums of ‘Legendary Deep Funk ’, among the first LPs issued by the label. Equally loved by fans and loathed by vinyl price-gougers, the music contained on these albums took the world by storm, offering a refreshing change from the same old well-loved funk tunes endlessly re-issued on cut-price comps. The music felt fresh, exciting, full of energy and more authentic than anything all but the most dedicated collectors had heard before. Fittingly enough, to celebrate BBE’s 20th year, we’ve asked Keb to select his greatest hits from the ‘Deep Funk’ series, presented on heavyweight vinyl, CD and digital formats. The compilation contains edits by Keb’s deep funk contemporaries Ian Wright & Kenny Dope, as well as standout tracks from over 20 years of ‘Legendary Deep Funk’.

Reiner Witzel & Datfunk – Steppin’ Up (LP +MP3)
Friday, September 16th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Reiner Witzel & Datfunk – Steppin’ Up (LP +MP3)

Image: 1605661 Reiner Witzel is a German Jazz musician born in Mannheim. He is said to be one of the best Jazz-sax-players nowadays and won several awards. Reiner Witzel worked with well-respected artists amongst others Defunkt @ New Yorker Knitting Factory, with Fela Kuti @ Shrine in Lagos, in Jazz Clubs of Tokyo and stadiums in Dubai. Moreover he played with the Bundesjazzorchester, Philipp van Endert (Urban Lyrical), the Gil Evans Orchestra, Marla Glen, Kristi Stassinopoulou, the hr-Bigband and Fury in the Slaughterhouse. Besides his work as a musician he is also busy as a photographer and portrayed Lionel Richie or Roger Cicero, a. o..

Linernotes by Reiner Witzel:
When I met Asterios Papastamatakis in Athen’s trendy downtown district Keramikos in the fall of 2014 there was immediate sympathy. We talked about music and live and made plans to play together.
Shortly later he invited me to join his trio “Datfunk” for some concerts in Greece, the following year I invited the group to Germany.
Playing with “Datfunk”, who had been playing frequently in clubs in and around Athens felt great, the sound of the trio was so soulful and funky … and since I had the
idea in mind, to do a soul-jazz-record for quite a while I realized that now I had found the right team to record it:
Asterios Papastamatakis, a never-resting organ activist, a soulful virtuoso full of depth,
Michael Kapilidis, one of Greek`s most wanted drummers, who is coming from a background with lots of musicians in the family-tree and whose style of playing is really unique
and Adedeji Adetajo, originally from Lagos/Nigeria, who came to Athens in 2007 and mixed up the scene with his funky guitar-style.
In December 2015 we went to the studio in Athens and recorded two late-night-sessions. The atmosphere was energetic, but still relaxed and friendly.
The result are these 10 songs, that we would now like to share with you.

Tracklist: 1) Get up and Get it // 2) Awakening // 3) Circus of Deseaster // 4) Athens after Midnight 5) Lato // 6) Hummin’ // 7) Alco // 8) Hot Tamale // 9) Sunshower 10) Athens after Midnight / Part 2 Available from 28.10.2016

Goodnight Cody – Wide As The Moonlight, Warm As The Sun
Saturday, May 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Goodnight Cody – Wide As The Moonlight, Warm As The Sun

Image: 1604052 Set sail onto a cartoon ocean on a quest to an imaginary world in
Wide as the Moonlight, Warm as the Sun. A perfect fit for Daedelus’
label Magical Properties, the new album by Goodnight Cody (of
Team Supreme) is an experience of powerful imagery and pure
poetic whimsy.
Synthesized vocals, colorful toy beats, and charmingly playful
dreamscapes create a captivating story of adventure. Every track is
like a different land – or level – with all the twists, turns, and emotions
that define the hero’s journey: uncertainty, excitement, loneliness,
romance, melancholy and victory.
Pack your bags for “Travel Alone,” which flips from slow and
ponderous to funky and frenetic and back again – infused throughout
with stars, so shiny and bright. “Paper Boat” launches into easy pink
waves, under a glowing green sky and butter moon.
With a childlike sense of wonder, “I Met a Whale” sways side to side
in the deep blue sea – inspiring kisses, songs and smiles. “A Walk
Through the Trees” pauses in the fresh feel of new love, and “Almost
Forgot” expands with rising energy into the sunset.
Absorbing and pleasantly unreal, Wide as the Moonlight, Warm as
the Sun is a sonic kaleidoscope that ignites the imagination and
makes music into a game.

Pomrad – Knights

Pomrad – Knights (2LP+MP3)
Friday, April 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pomrad – Knights (2LP+MP3)

Image: 1603658 Following up on his critically acclaimed „This Day“ EP, Pomrad (BE) debuts his full length with On And On Records (FRA) & Jakarta Records (GER) worldwide this summer.

Pomrad a.k.a. Adriaan Van de Velde has lots of Funk in his colorful trickster bag. Just check out the title track „Knights“ of his album: its beats chug like the wheels of a locomotive and electrifying synth solos guarantee the best brain freeze you’ve ever felt. He could be your favorites producer, favorite producer with Lefto & Mr. Carmack among his fans.
His debut album “Knights”, a collection of razor sharp keyboard licks, phat electro grooves and thick funk, following up on his EP release, which received radio support from MistaJam (BBC Radio1), Alex Nut (Rinse FM) & Lefto (Studio Brussels).
British tastemaker Gilles Peterson included one of Pomrad’s tracks on one of the influential Brownswood Electric compilations. Future funk heroes Teeko & B.Bravo did the same for their second Tempo Dreams compilation.
Now, Knights exceeds these expectations and transcends the aforementioned comparisons, taking a leap into the unknown. Pomrad clearly has found his own voice. Because, yeah, there’s postmodern retrofunk behind ‘City lights’ (a true gem!) and ‘Rush Hour’ & also, you’ll find a couple of talented soul singers hiding inside Pomrad’s cotton candy fantasies. Like Belgium’s blue eyed soulstress Selah Sue or Sylvie Kreusch of indie darlings Soldier’s Heart.
You want some cosmic funk, Herbie Hancock style? You got it. Need some of that Hudson Mohawke-ish beat madness? Or the kind of talkbox vibes that Zapp was known for in the eighties? The Pomrad experience includes them all.
Just having finished his own Boiler Room Set in Brussels, Pomrad will be playing live Festivals all over Europe this summer including but not limited to Dour Festival (BE, July).

Tracklist:

1. Cat On The Ridge
2. Knights
3. Rush Hour feat. Steve Kashala
4. Out Like A Light feat. Billie

15 Henning – Arrival / Departure
16 Nite-Funk – Can U Read Me?
17 DaM-FunK – Believer
18 True Design – I Wanna Break
19 Crystal Winds – Funk Ain’t Easy

A lot of folks feel like they know DaM-FunK, he is laid-back, affable
and personable but to truly get the guy, I mean really understand
him, is to know a deep love of music like no other. A more
suitable reflection of this is his contribution to the beloved
DJ-Kicks series. A snapshot into the mind of the pioneer of
Modern-Funk music…get to know the man behind the shades.
At a satisfying 19 songs, Dam lets grooves breath, this is a mix to
happily get lost within. It’s a document in vibe. Unexpected
contemporary joints from low-key producers like Henning and
L33 mingle with lost gems from unlikely places. 80’s Fusion-Jazz
guitarist Tony Palkovic on “True To Yourself” follow the the
airy-burn of new-age ensemble Gaussian Curve’s “Broken
Clouds” or the super rare bliss-Funk of “Theme From Beach Boy”
from 1982. Dam’s excellent collaboration with Nite Jewel, as
‘Nite-Funk’ on “Can U Read Me?” is pure bliss and such a fantastic
collaboration you’d be yearning for more., reminding listens
that one of Dam’s biggest assists is his duality from master DJ to
trend-setting producer. And we get this heavy on Dam’s DJ-Kicks
exclusive “Believer”. Sheets of synth lines fall all around a locking
drum program that starts off innocently enough but ends you in a
half-hypnotic state. An extensive instrumental composition that
on it’s own could only be classified as signature Modern-Funk.
There may be a lot of folks dabbling but there really is only one
Damon.

FOR FANS OF
George Clinton, Madlib, Theo Parrish, Flying Lotus

Image: 1600390 Critics, reviewers and journalists watch out. These sales notes are so succinct that you may be finished reading them before you’ve even had the chance to skip to the second song (provided that you’ve listened to the opener in its entire perfection)!

What sets one compilation album apart from the others? What makes a record label special? These are questions that keep us up at night here at Tramp and you are holding in your hands one of our 50 full-length answers. It’s true that within the soul and funk scene rarity and obscurity commands attention but it’s the quality and performance that keeps a selection on heavy rotation. Speaking of Tramp, and in particular of this final volume in the Santa’s Funk & Soul Christmas Party (SF&SCP) compilation trilogy, Sean Delany and Jan Kohlmeyer did an incredible job compiling these tunes. They spared no pains digging up the rarest of the rare, and the best of the best Christmas funk you have (n)ever heard (and which has not been compiled anywhere else). Even with your impeccable music taste and your unlimited record-buying budget you will have a hard time getting your hands on most of these gems. What brings you all the money if something you want is never offered? For us it’s the quality that counts and that’s why you will find such artists as Sam Sweetsinger Bell, Joe Shinall, Cleveland Robinson, and Carol Ford to name a few on this album. Of course the rest of the tunes are no exception either.

It fits like a glove that this third volume of SF&SCP is simultaneously the 50th Tramp Records album released. Since we are proudly independent and are not forced to act in the economic sense, and, like you, are music fanatics and die-hard record collectors, we at Tramp Records are still digging after more than ten hard-working years! It started out just for fun and it’s our fans worldwide that encourage us to keep bringing the heat. As long as there is music out there that has the power to drop our jaws to the floor we will still be here – and, like Santa himself, we will work year-round to continue to deliver our funky Christmas miracles directly to your turntable. Merry Christmas!

Key selling points:
– most of the songs appear on CD/digital for the very first-time
– the vinyl LP comes with a full album download code
– fold-out CD-booklet and vinyl LP contain detailed liner notes and label scans

The Gene Dudley Group (Ft.Anne Frankenstein & E) – Dynamite in the Still of the Night / Pearl Baby
Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group (Ft.Anne Frankenstein & E) – Dynamite in the Still of the Night / Pearl Baby

Image: 1600486 Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the brand new single from one-man horn driven funk music machine, The Gene Dudley Group. Following on from the recent club smasher – a cover of Todd Terje’s Inspector Norse – The Gene Dudley Group return with another dance floor destroyer! Original cut Dynamite in the Still of the Night features the powerhouse vocals of Anne Frankenstein (who also performed on big hitter No Trouble on the Mountain) just in time to cause explosions around your bonfire!

On the flip comes another funky cover version given the Gene Dudley treatment. In what is fast becoming something of a tradition, Mr Dudley has taken an early Wah Wah 45s release – in this case Benny Poole’s soul/jazz banger Pearl Baby, Pearl – and re-worked it for 2015. Fresh from his contributions to the Zambidoose album, and work with partner Myron for Stones Throw Records, Eric Boss AKA E (from Myron & E) adds some of his trademark vocals into the mix, making this package a double dance floor heavy hitter!

And don’t forget, The Gene Dudley Group’s sophomore LP, Zambidoose, is out now!

Tracklisting
1 Dynamite in the Still of the Night (feat. Anne Frankenstein)
2 Pearl Baby, Pearl (feat. E) Available from 06.11.2015
