Image: 1600274 The great bassist Oscar Pettiford live in Hamburg 1958, second chapter. Fine mélange of modern mainstream, cool jazz and hard bop, with Jimmy Pratt (dr), Hans Koller (ts), Dusko Goykovich (tp), Michel Hausser (vib), Attila Zoller (g), Roger Guerin (tp) and Armin Rusch (p), heard here in a second previously unknown Pettiford session from Germany. Comes as carefully mastered longplay CD and 2-LP vinyl set (gatefold), including photos of the event by Susanne Schapowalow and new liner notes by Arne Reimer, with Goykovich and Hausser sharing their memories of the time. Certainly Pettiford`s best recorded live performance on the European jazz scene in excellent sound quality!

Recorded December 22, 1958 in Hamburg at Studio 10, produced by Hans Gertberg.

Oscar Pettiford (bass), Jimmy Pratt (drums), Hans Koller (tenor saxophone & clarinet),
Dusko Goykovich (trumpet), Attila Zoller (guitar), Michel Hausser (vibraphone),
Roger Guerin (trumpet), Armin Rusch Piano)

Oscar Pettiford, born September 30th, 1922 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, grew up in a musical family with ten siblings. When he was 14, Duke Ellington heard him play the bass at a jam session and wanted to hire him right on the spot, but it was against the law: Pettiford was too young. Only years later, when Ellington’s regular bass player Jimmy Blanton had died early in 1942 of tuberculosis, Pettiford joined the band in 1945 and stayed for three years. He moved to New York and was jamming at Minton’s Playhouse with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Max Roach, developing a new style that later came to be called bebop. With his individual style of playing, along with Charles Mingus, Pettiford became the most influential bass player of his decade. He is also known to be the first player who introduced the cello to jazz.

In September 1958 Oscar Pettiford came to Europe for the first time with a show entitled “Jazz From Carnegie Hall”, organized by Harold Davison. The all-star band included J. J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Zoot Sims, Lee Konitz, Kenny Clarke, Red Garland and Phineas Newborn, touring England, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, France and Germany, where they played in Berlin, Cologne, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Hamburg. Dusko Goykovich, who had left Yugoslavia in 1955, was living in Frankfurt at the time and remembers: “After the show all the musicians came to a jam session down in the Jazz Cellar and that is where I first met Oscar. He was a wonderful guy with a great sense of humor and a deep voice. But Oscar was also very tall and strong. After the session he carried everything by himself, his bass, his amplifier, walking up the stairs from the Jazz Cellar. I was so tired after the session, I could have never done that, but he did it!“

The 1958 tour of “Jazz From Carnegie Hall” was a big success and Pettiford could hardly believe the enthusiasm they received for their music in Europe, so after the tour was completed he decided to stay on the continent and rented an apartment in Baden-Baden. In the meantime, producer Hans Gertberg of Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Hamburg had started to pay attention to the talented bass player and invited Pettiford and his quartet for a concert (the so-called Jazz Workshop) on November 14th, where he played with Hans Koller, Attila Zoller, Kenny Clarke and some guests in Studio 10 (already released in June 2015 on CD and LP: “We Get The Message”, Sonorama-90). The concert was so well received so that Gertberg invited Pettiford again the next month for Jazz Workshop No. 3, playing on December 22nd, but with a slightly different group. One guest soloist at the gig was Dusko Goykovich: “Hans Gertberg had asked me to join Oscar’s group. We had three days of rehearsal, but with such professional players, one day only would have been fine too. Oscar was not only a great player but also a wonderful composer. I was very proud to play with him. For me, he was one of the best bass players I had ever worked with!”

That December evening, Pettiford’s group played compositions that were a fine mélange of modern mainstream and cool jazz but also hard bop, featuring the composition “Moanin’”, written by Bobby Timmons for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. In the song “H. E. C. Blues”, Pettiford briefly plays the melody of Jingle Bells in his solo, since it was christmastime. The day after the concert, the newspaper “Hamburger Abendblatt” wrote in a review: “Michel Hausser from Paris showed his proficiency on the vibraphone, and the basic group members Koller, Zoller and Pettiford really got along very well musically with the new rhythm section, including Jimmy Pratt on drums and Armin Rusch on piano.“

The concert is now issued here for the first time, as are the four accompanying photographs by Susanne Schapowalow. She was born in the same year as Pettiford and became known as photographer who got very close to her subject matter. Schapowalow didn’t shoot too many pictures of musicians on the stage, instead being more interested what happened in the backstage area and in other private settings. Supported by Hans Gertberg, she gained access to take pictures during the rehearsals at the Jazz Workshops in Hamburg, and this is where she met Pettiford. The two hit it off quite well, and Schapowalow took him to experience the Christmas market at Heiligengeistfeld, where he had fun riding a motor scooter with her daughter, Natascha. Schapowalow was also allowed to take a few pictures in Pettiford’s hotel room, where he was sitting, smoking and transcribing music.

Michel Hausser, whose composition “Blues In My Mind”, “Rue Dauphine” and “H.E.C. Blues” were featured in the concert, remembers that the last rehearsal was always recorded, and then during the concert, they would let that recording run parallel but silent to the live concert, so that in case something unexpected would happen, they could switch to the tape. “But that concert night, they didn’t do that, even if there was a wired moment: Oscar also played his cello for some tunes and he had a small amplifier with it. But then the amplifier broke and he angrily kicked it off with his feet and switched back to his regular bass.“

Once the Hamburg concert was over, Pettiford and Koller were in a rush because they had a concert in Vienna coming up the following day. Dusko Goykovich remembers: “A few hours later, they had this terrible car accident. Obviously, I was happy that I had been dropped earlier”, Pettiford had bit his tongue through and had to stay longer in a Vienna hospital than Koller. After recovering somewhat, however, he soon started playing again, and in January 1959 he recorded with Hans Koller in Vienna, who said about Pettiford: “It was Oscar who made me understand what it means when American musicians keep saying: ‘When you play your instrument, you’re telling a story’”. Pettiford continued traveling, playing concerts in Paris, Cologne, San Remo, Berlin, Stuttgart, Essen and Baden-Baden, always with his idea in mind “to pass on the message.”

In summer 1959, Pettiford moved to Copenhagen, where he played at Café Montmartre with Stan Getz, Don Byas and Jan Johansson. In February 1960, his wife Jacqueline gave birth to twin girls, that they named Celeste and Cellina. His last album “My little Cello” was dedicated to his son, whose name was Cello. He played his last concert September 4th at the opening of an art exhibition in Copenhagen and shortly after fell into a coma. He passed on September 8th, 1960, aged only 37, succumbing to a virus closely related to polio, and perhaps the lingering effects of the car accident.

Image: 1598875 “Sometimes you wait and things fall into place, this is an A&R man’s dream. You can spend hours banging your head, waiting for lightening to strike, trying to find the perfect pairing, it’s there floating around in your head but the answer is not clear. The record needs a remix, but who would be perfect?

Not being one for doing things by numbers, sometimes you have to leave the music for a moment. Give it a life of its own and allow the musical landscape to adapt to it. I had been mulling over remixes for Seven for quite some time. We had the Krystal Klear mix which was perfect, that happened early on, I just needed something to compliment it and round of the remix single.

Detroit Swindle are notorious for being very selective, but armed with Classic as my calling card I got ready to approach them. Low and behold, possibly within a day or two of formalising my approach in my head, they emailed me and asked if they could remix the record. The stars aligned and it all made sense. These two remixes complement each other perfectly, and this feels like a complete single coming from the heart, remixed with love.” Luke Solomon, 2015

Having been releasing music since 2008 across various aliases Haider’s new project is a platform from which he intends to release material from both new and established artists covering leftofcentre strains of floor focused House and Techno.

In to inaugurate the project is a new artist also based in South London: Ross From Friends. Taking lo-fi building blocks full of crackle and character and running them through his sampler Ross From Friends forms his own style of roughedged Techno that hits hard whilst carrying a distinctive sense of soul.

‘Golf School’ kicks things off with burnt out percussion and off kilter fills that propel a tape driven guitar and Rhodes combo before ‘Ridley Schottt’ blooms behind a hustling bit-crushed riff that gathers menacing chords and frazzled percussion.

‘.Biz’ then caps the EP off with a circling piano riff and astutely plotted whacks and samples that pepper a Delroy Edwardsesque groove, bringing a rich and varied package to a close

The first of many diamonds on Breaker Breaker.

Milton Wright – Original Friends and Buddies
Tuesday, January 6th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Milton Wright – Original Friends and Buddies

Image: 1594509 Athens of the North is proud to present Milton Wright’s stunning alternate version of the now Classic Miami soul LP ‘Friends & Buddies’. An altogether more stripped down, folky soul affair than its highly respected, much sampled brother is now available on Vinyl, CD and Digital for the very first time. Shelved at the last minute then re-recorded and overdubbed, only a few promo copies of this early version escaped from the studio and are deep in the collections of the very few previously in the know.

The master tapes burnt in a fire at T.K Disco in Miami in the early 80s so even the label has not heard this in 30 Years. Many reissues of the second version of Friends & Buddies LP have come and gone, but Milton’s original vision has remained hidden until now. As searingly honest and stunningly soulful as any seminal Marvin Gaye or Terry Callier LP, it stands tall amongst its exceptional peers as one of the true pillars of quality 70s soul.

– Unreleased Alternate version
– New sleeve notes by Milton Wright
– Super-heavy high quality tip-on sleeve!
– Cut by the experts at Timmion Cutting Laboratory, Finland

Aposento Alto – Goodby Old Friends
Thursday, August 1st, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Aposento Alto – Goodby Old Friends

Image: 1580842 The Aposento Alto LP was one of the last albums I ever picked up from the Groove Merchant before leaving the Bay. It’s a crazy obscure, private press, Latin gospel soul funk album out of Modesto, CA. Yeah, Latin gospel soul funk…there’s no better way to describe it and if you listen to “Rejoice” you’ll see what I mean. I’ve never heard Latin gospel but now that I have…if it all sounds like this, I’m down like the ground. Besides “Rejoice,” it has some slower soul tunes and this epic, eight minute cut “Te Amo” that features a ridiculous 2-3 minute drum solo complete
with a steady, back-breaking, breakbeat (complete with all kinds of fills and rolls) that’s over a minute long. Mind-boggling.

A1 He’s Coming 6:33
A2 I’m So Tired 6:41
A3 What A Happy Life 6:08
B1 Rejoice 5:47
B2 Te Amo 12:21

Ruffstuff & Friends – Gatts / New Horizons
Sunday, April 14th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ruffstuff & Friends – Gatts / New Horizons

Image: 1579522 After huge releases from Artificial Intelligence and Serum still echoing in clubs, V Recordings keep things rolling with the massive Gatts / New Horizons. A collaborative effort from Ruffstuff and friends : Friller, Nu Elementz and Freeze,
whether it’s the gully rhythms of Gatts, or the desolate sounds of New Horizons, this one caters for all.

Known for the intensity and speed of his DJ sets, Ruffstuff earned his stripes primarily as a selector rather than a producer. Causing havoc on dance floors and the airwaves via his Kool FM shows, Ruffstuff now turns his talents at production with
the huge Gatts / New Horizons. With sick DJing skills as well as sick production, this latest release on V Recordings comes from one the formidable forces in Drum & Bass.

Ruffstuff & Friller Vs Nu Elementz Gatts

Packed with attitude, Gatts sees Ruffstuff, Friller go head to head Nu Elementz to produce one the dirtiest tracks you’ll hear. After an introduction of bold percussion and ominous strings, Gatts rolls out the dark vibes. Featuring an old school two note bassline, and stripped back style, this one’s full of attitude.

Ruffstuff & Freeze New

Horizons Switching up the vibe once again, Ruffstuff and Freeze join forces for the grim New Horizons. After a desolate intro featuring haunting vocals New Horizon’s drops into a stomping DnB track. Featuring a stripped back arrangement and a juggernaut bass line that smashes proceedings, New Horizons leaves the dancefloor in its wake.

Support : Rene LaVice, The Risky, Callide, DJ Sin, DJ Chap and more! Available from 25.03.2013

RIYL: John Talabot, Kasper Bjorke, Pional, Whomadewho

Whomadewho drummer/producer and electronic-pop stalwart Tomas Barfod arrives on Friends
of Friends this November with his third album as a solo artist and his second for the Los Angeles
label. Assisted by a diverse range of guest vocalists, the Paloma album is an expansive record that
takes the dancefloor-friendly bedroom pop of the Salton Sea (Friends of Friends 2012) and Love
Me (Secretly Canadian 2014) albums to dazzling new heights. Embracing a divergent array of
genres and tempos, Paloma’s 11 tracks create a world of love and heartbreak, hued by Barfod’s
broad synth strokes and effortless drum programming. Fans of Barfod’s previous releases on FoF
and Kompakt will find plenty to latch onto here, including several vocal features from label
favorite Nina K, but Paloma invokes a larger sound than the Danish producer has put forth in the
past, a sound replete with higher highs, more dramatic hooks and an even crisper, more pristine
production aesthetic.

Indian Wells – Where The World Ends

Track Listing:
1. Voices
2. Cascades
3. Forest Hills
4. Some Stripes
5. The Alps

7. Parola

Indian Wells, producer Pietro Iannuzzi from southern Italy is set to release his third
album. From the label that brought you Shlohmo, Perera Elsewhere, Deru, Kyson,
Tomas Barfod and more. RIYL: Fourtet, The Field, Gui Boratto, Bonobo

Across a range of artfully composed, emotive electronic music ‘Where The World Ends’
channels feelings of geographical, social and political isolation formed from borders
both ageless and imposed. From ‘Voices’ opening soundscape, the heavenly techno of
‘Cascades’, the melodic peaks of ‘The Alps’ and the soaring title track, ‘Where The
World Ends’ is in turns ebullient and melancholic, compelling and hypnotic. Choirs of
wordless vocals provide a universal element of communication throughout, breaking
down barriers of language, creating connections, crossing borders. Available from 08.09.2017

M.O.O.N. – Clinically Blase
Friday, March 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on M.O.O.N. – Clinically Blase

Image: 1609290 Friends of Friends present Clinically Blasé the debut album from M|O|O|N

Tracklist:
1. Pilot
2. Time
3. Jon F
4. Episode One
5. Medium Cool
6. Alicia
7. The Fens
8. Episode Two
9. Leaning In
10. Finale

Quietly building an enthusiastic following with a steady stream of EPs and singles, M.O.O.N.’s debut full-length ‘Clinically Blase’ creatively navigates a wide range of emotive synthesizer music deviating from dancegeared tropes in favor of freer arrangements and lush instrumentation. While the rhythms are rooted in variants of house, boogie, and synth-pop ‘Clinically Blase’ never tips it’s hand stylistically in any particular direction resulting in a playful balance of retro sounds and futuristic
ideas highlighting a deft melodic sensibility. Separated by interludes, ‘Clinically Blase’ is split into three sections that explore variations on similar themes and shared sounds recording live percussion, guitar, piano, and bass in addition to software instruments and classic analog synth gear.
The album’s beatless opener “Pilot” signals departure with a vocal loop rendered aquatic over bright, ringing piano chords – sounds which make appearances again on the album’s arpeggiating centerpiece “Alicia” and on the closer “Finale”. The smooth “Time” unwinds with unexpected jazzy chords and expressive treated trumpet lifting it skyward. There are plenty of moments made for movement with the ecstatic drumwork and stratospheric pads of “Jon F”, the bouncing 303 of “Leaning In”, or the funky slo-mo arpeggiated disco roll of “Medium Cool”. The sequencing ties together ‘Clinically Blase’ into a compelling journey, ebbing and flowing in energy, timbre, and tempo much like a thoughtful, continuous DJ mix.

Key Points:
• Composer on the hit video game soundtrack ‘Hotline Miami’ yielding 3 sold-out highly sought after EPs
• Previous press support from Resident Advisor, Self-Titled, Pigeons and Planes, Complex and more
• ‘Alicia’ EP includes remixes from The Juan MacLean, Sage Caswell, and David Scott Stone (of LCD Soundsystem), EP premiered on Self-Titled Mag
• Has toured Europe doing both live sets and DJing – most notably in Paris, London, Glasgow and Poland. Small European tour scheduled for May 2017 (Paris + Croatia)

Press Quotes:
“Eight minutes of hypnotic, swirling arpeggios from a master of the extended groove” – Resident Advisor
“Synth-infused, throbbing 80s-inspired tracks” – Rock Paper Shotgun
“A taste of what’s to come that never gets tiring despite the original’s 10-minute running time” – Self-Titled Available from 05.05.2017

vocals, electronic blips, not-always-tuned guitars, half-audible
speech, stray clanks and rustles and ticks, it can sound as if were
recorded on duct tape. The ingredients vary in each track, but

Mark Nieto has tangled with the Los Angeles underground for the better part of the last decade, appearing regularly on local radio, playing parties and fine-tuning an aesthetic that fits comfortable at the intersection of instrumental guitar music and experimental electronic structures. It’s as COMBAT! that Nieto’s various projects and influences meet though and this Fall the native Angeleno will release his debut selftitled album on Friends of Friends. ‘COMBAT!’ is comprised of 13 songs that fall at various points along the intersection of experimental guitar music and an array of electronic sounds, ranging from house on one end of the spectrum and ambient on the other. With the thought of crafting optimal music for emotional drives around Los Angeles, COMBAT! recorded the‘COMBAT!’ LP while traveling around the globe, garnering wisdom from an array of locales while always keeping his indomitable Southern California heritage in peripheral focus. With past relationships, growing pains and an unavoidable sense of place(and displacement) forming the emotional crux of the album, tracks like “Days of Dust” and “Heavy Accent” are deeply evocative efforts, full of harmonically complex guitar bits, rganic rhythms and a deeply understood sense of atmosphere. The album is entire instrumental, but with energetic highs like “Jacaranda” and “Open And Close The Globe”, you’d be hard-pressed to not be completely enveloped in COMBAT!’s world as his self-titled debut hits peaks and valleys rarely found on a debut release. And while this is COMBAT!’s official debut, real Los Angeles heads will know him from past projects and a long-running KXLU show, all components of his greater musical history.

Key Points:
• “Heavy Accent” premiered via Noisey, “Jacaranda” premiered via Self-Titled
• Limited vinyl run of 250.
• Instrumentation on album performed by members of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.
• Long time DJ at KXLU.
• For fans of: Battles, Dawn of Midi, and Tycho.
• From the label that brought Daedalus, Shlohmo, Jerome LOL, and Anenon.

Press Quotes:
“Nieto’s atmospherics owe as much to house and hip-hop as they do anything else, with minor refrains that linger as the melody carries on, echoing the hypnotic unease of a long dusk drive across LA.” – Noisey

“Heavy Accent” is an impressive introduction, and if the Friends of Friends co-sign didn’t leave you convinced, one listen certainly will.” – Passion of the Weiss Available from 16.09.2016

Friends of Friends and the follow-up to 2013’s ‘The Water’s Way’. The
Adelaide-born, Berlin-based composer/producer/electronic musician sees
music as the platform through which he feels most comfortable –
projecting his imagination through musical narratives, embracing and
documenting the images and sounds of the world he’s traveled – from the
chaos and cacophony of bustling cities, to the peaceful, sun-drenched
comfort of his own hometown.
Eleven roomy, beatific songs are rounded around Kyson’s delicate vocal
work, ‘A Book Of Flying’ updates classic folk tropes with modern verve.
Composed entirely by Kyson, the album is a sort of grown up bedroom
album, full of contemplative instrumentation and songwriting that tugs at
intrinsically human heartstrings. Whereas Kyson’s music has touched on
the dancefloor in the past, ‘A Book Of Flying’ gives in entirely to his
inward-looking proclivities and the result is his most complete work to
date, a work of contemporary folk that paints a fluid picture of Kyson the
artist.
“Carved within a time of solitude, it was this period of realizationmusically
and personally- which granted me the chance to explore a new
musical focus. Inspired by delicate sound fragments and a connection to
nature’s noise, A Book of Flying is an album which arose out of
necessity.” –Kyson

Tracklist:
1. As The Mind It Changes
2. Flightless
3. Thank You For Everything Part II
4. You
5. Latvia
6. Pictures
7. A Song About The Future
8. Nice Circle
9. Black Dreaming
10. To Fight Without Sabotage
11. Outro / If Our Love Was A Movie

Press Quotes:
“The way the central synth motif on “How Long” swells and eclipses everything
else is downright thrilling… it smoulders and overtakes like it’s trying to run the
rest of the track into the ground, a perfect centerpiece” – Pitchfork, on The
Water’s Way
“Though he continues to employ forward-thinking arrangements and sleek
electronic elements, Kyson has added a dream-like folk motif to his most recent
work. The drifting vocals and gentle acoustic guitar patterns of his newest work
could almost pass for José González.

Anenon – Petrol
Friday, March 11th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Anenon – Petrol

Image: 1602879 Anenon is Brian Allen Simon, an artist and the founder of
the Non Projects record label. Constantly shedding the non-essential
in search of a deep and individualized core, Anenon’s music feels
potent and refined, yet still raw. His work reaches audiences through
speakers and venues where music is given serious consideration. An
experimental artist using contemporary tools, Brian mines the intersection
of electronics, jazz, improvisation and spiritual atmospherics.
Simon has performed internationally throughout Japan,
Europe and North America, sharing the stage with the likes of Morton
Subotnick, Julia Holter, Laurel Halo, Baths and many more. He is a
distinguished entrant of the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy and has
guest lectured at CalArts. Alongside multiple LP’s and EP’s released
on Non Projects, Simon has also released songs on Ghostly International,
Innovative Leisure and Brownswood. October saw Anenon’s debut
on Friends of Friends with the ‘Camembert’ EP, an effort that will be
followed with the ‘Petrol’ LP in 2016.
Born out of a series of improvisational sessions with friend
and collaborator Jon-Kyle Mohr, Anenon’s ‘Petrol’ is an album about
his native city of Los Angeles, but not the Los Angeles you know. It’s
a city built as much upon the frenzied kinetic energy of its freeways
as its moments of thoughtful, early morning solitude. In Anenon’s
mind, an Angeleno is “one who understands the beauty of distance
and the consistencies of irregularity” and those juxtapositions can be
found throughout ‘Petrol’, a spacious album that needs to be lived in
to be believed. Those juxtapositions extend to the sonic makeup of
‘Petrol’, from the tactile bliss of opener “Body” to the album closing
title track’s climactic bombast. Out March 4 on Friends of Friends,
‘Petrol’ is the culmination of years of work and a deeply refined sensibility,
a combination that seems to fit both label and artist like a glove.

Tracklist:
1. Body
2. Lumina
3. Once
4. CXP
5. Mouth
6. Hinoki
7. Machines
8. Panes
9. Petrol

Key Points:

Fader, Mixmag, Exclaim, Clash
• Red Bull Music Academy alumnus (2011)
• Curating a four-part, year-long series at the Museum of Contemporary Art,
Los Angeles entitled ‘Movement’
• Radio Host on non-profit online radio station Dublab
• Head of Non Projects record label, an Alpha Pup imprint
• Past releases on Ghostly International, Innovative Leisure and Brownswood
Recordings
• International touring experience with performances in Japan, Europe and
North America, sharing the stage with the likes of Morton Subotnick, Julia
Holter, Laurel Halo, Baths and many more

Press Quotes:
“The mood is evocative of Vangelis’ Blade Runner soundtrack, but elsewhere
things are less placid and misty-eyed, the drums on “Once” and “CXP” recreate the
head-over-heels tumble of drum ‘n’ bass, inspiring greater urgency in Simon’s
sax work. “Mouth” and “Petrol,” meanwhile, bring to mind Philip Glass’
work.”
– Philip Sherburne (Pitchfork) on Petrol Available from 01.04.2016
