Various – Sources: The Sleeping Bag Records Anthology
Tuesday, September 29th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Sources: The Sleeping Bag Records Anthology

Image: 1599987 The third Sources package comes from one perhaps one of the most radical of the New York underground independent labels in several different areas – Avant-Garde, Dance, Hip-Hop/Rap and Freestyle, so welcome to the one and only Sleeping Bag Records from New York. Founded in 1981 by the Avante-Garde musician Arthur Russell together with Will Socolov and Juggy Gayles, the label kicked off with the seminal ‘Go Bang!’ by Dinosaur L aka Arthur Russell and quickly established itself with further dancefloor smashes from Class Action, the Jamaica Girls and Konk among others. However undoubtedly one of Sleeping Bag’s most significant signings would turn out to be producer extraordinaire Kurtis Mantronik, who, with rapper MC Tee under the name Mantronix, would produce many of the most cutting-edge Hip-Hip/Rap and Electro classics of the 1980s including ‘Needle To The Groove’, ‘Ladies’, ‘Bassline’ and ‘Who Is It’, all of which are included here as well as producing a brace of international smash hits for Joyce Sims including the electro-funk masterpiece ‘(You Are My) All & All’ and the super-slinky ‘Come Into My Life’. Sleeping Bag would remain at the forefront of dance music culture with numerous other significant dance-floor smashes from the likes of Tricky Tee, Felix, Nocera, Dhar Braxton and Kariya’s brilliant ‘Let Me Love For Tonight’ among many others. In many ways Sleeping Bag exemplified the perfect New York independent label of the 1980s with its shrewd A&R philosophy and an interesting balance of staff who were divided between old music industry veterans together with a brace of young keen new inductees who kept the label close to the streets – a winning combination all round. Out of all the labels featured in the Sources series, Sleeping Bag was the most consistently successful in its era and was undoubtedly the label which was the most hardwired into the sensibilities of the times. This is the most comprehensive anthology available of one of the greatest independent record labels of the 1980s.

Courtney Pine (Ft. Omar) – Butterfly / Rules
Friday, July 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Courtney Pine (Ft. Omar) – Butterfly / Rules

Image: 1610972 No musician embodies more the dramatic transformation in the British jazz scene over the past thirty years than Courtney Pine. His debut album, Journey To The Urge Within in 1987, was the first serious jazz album ever to make the British Top 40, notching up sales to qualify for a silver disc.

Aside from being the preeminent figure in the resurgence of British jazz, Courtney became a renowned presenter and broadcaster, best known for his long running radio show for BBC Radio 2, ‘Jazz Crusade’. He was also awarded an O.B.E in the 2000 New Year’s Honours, and was also made a C.B.E in 2009 for services to Music.

As an artist always looking to work outside of and across established musical genres, it is easier to list the musicians and artists he hasn’t worked with, but now in 2017 Courtney releases brand new music featuring another British music legend of equal repute, his Freestyle Records label mate and an artist also honoured for his own creative endeavours, Omar Lyefook M.B.E.

Both tracks of this single are taken from Courtneys’ forthcoming album Black Notes From The Deep – the 19th of his stellar career. The exciting and fresh interpretation of Herbie Hancocks’ Butterfly demonstrates straight away that this is a dream team combination. With Alec Dankworth laying down the bass, Rod Youngs’ drumming underpinning the groove, the song also gives the outstanding keyboards of Robert Mitchell space to stretch out – Omars fantastic vocal performance rides sweetly on top of the dreamy backing vocals of Charleen Hamilton – and of course Courtneys’ flowing, imaginative and creative solo perfects this modern version of a much loved classic.

Rules is a brand new, collaborative composition by Courtney & Omar – the punchy drums and bass line patterns hints simultaneously at classic jazz and funkier club-centric sounds. Courtney cooks on tenor saxophone and also the organ – whilst Omar marinades the super catchy melody with that unmistakable voice.

As an introduction to the forthcoming album Black Notes From The Deep this single points the way to what 2 British legends, both exemplary in their own right – can come up with when joining forces.

Mako & The Hawk – The Devil Made Me Do It (feat. Chima Anya)
Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mako & The Hawk – The Devil Made Me Do It (feat. Chima Anya)

Image: 1607202 On their new 45, Mako & The Hawk take you back to a time when breaks were funky and rappers knew how to rhyme for a massive double dose of fresh original boom-bap. With beats forged from previously un-sampled (and legally cleared!) vintage funk breaks and emcee Chima ‘The Doctor’ Anya delivering lyrical wisdom, The Devil Made Me Do It and Strut Your Stuff are a pair of block-rocking jams to turn any party out!

Mako & The Hawk bio.

They might sound like a seventies cop show but Mako & The Hawk are always on the cut, producing and spinning floor-filling dirty funk and soul, old school hip-hop, reggae and party breaks.

Since forming in 2009, the pair have had vinyl and digital releases on Breakbeat Paradise, Freestyle Records, Funk Blasters and Tour of Booty, garnered frequent radio plays on Craig Charles’ BBC Radio 6 Funk And Soul Show, supported the likes of JStar and The Bongolian and held down a never-less-than-packed seven year long residency at Mr Wolf’s in central Bristol.

The Hawk is bassist for mod-funk legends and BBC Radio 2 darlings Big Boss Man, while Mako also produces as one half of Mako & Mr Bristow and is the long-running editor of music site monkeyboxing.com.

This autumn will finally see the long-awaited vinyl seven inch release of their throwback boom-bap double A-side featuring rapper Chima Anya on beats created from never-previously-sampled early 70s Stateside funky soul.

“I’ve got a real soft spot for what this pair get up to!” (Craig Charles, BBC Radio 6)

Chima Anya bio.

Chima Anya is an internationally renowned emcee who time and again has proven to be ahead of the curve while simultaneously staying true to the foundation. When not blessing mics worldwide, he moonlights as a medical Doctor in the depths of south London.

Sabbath Vol.I project garnering acclaim from
outlets such as NPR (50 Best Albums of 2014),
Pitchfork, hardcore Black Sabbath fans and
most important of all Ozzy Osbourne himself,
while staying true to their Latin Funk roots.
Brown Sabbath Vol. II cranks up the level,
rocking harder than the original with a brew of
ballistic horns, pummeling guitar-riffs
underscored by a funky, driving rhyhm section.
Ghostland Observatory‘s Aaron Behrens
makes a guest appearance sharing vocal duties
with Brown Sabbath lead vocalist Alex Marrero.
Hitting harder than it’s predecessor and keeping closely in line
with the original Sabbath material, Brown Sabbath Vol. II crosses
over more to hard rock territory. Brownout’s powerful, signature
full horn section, dual-guitar attack, funked-up drums and latin
percussion return with a vengeance, adding even more weight
and texture to create a dark hybrid sound that resonates with
groove-laden intensity unique to their interpretation of Black
Sabbath’s tome.
An 8-piece outfit formed ten years ago by members of Grammy
Award-winning Latin revival orchestra Grupo Fantasma, Brownout
has evolved into a musical force all its own. With a succesful tour
of Brown Sabbath under their belt including Bonnaroo and Austin
Psych Fest while earning their third Austin Music Award, the
band has continued to produce music that is unflinchingly
progressive, while evoking the classic influences of artists such
as WAR, Cymande and Funkadelic.
Brownout now has four albums under their belt including Brown

Kylie Auldist – Waste of Time EP
Friday, June 17th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kylie Auldist – Waste of Time EP

Image: 1604712 Australian vocalist extraordinaire Kylie Auldist will be no stranger to soul & funk fans, her searing soul singing having featured on her own albums ‘Made Of Stone’ ,’Still Life’ (Tru Thoughts) also in The Bamboos, as well as Freestyle Records own Cookin’ On 3 Burners.

Her unmistakable voice is currently topping the pop charts across Europe, as the Kungs remix of Cookin’ On 3 Burners ‘This Girl’ has proven a sure fire hit with club audiences as well as pop fans. It has been playlisted on BBC Radio 1 and Capital FM, and is now a Top 10 hit in the Official UK Chart.

For her first solo album on Freestyle, Kylie, assisted by long time friends & collaborators Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos/Lanu/CO3B/Black Feeling) and Graeme Pogson (of Aussie electronic duo GL) have honed and perfected a collection of amazing new boogie, disco & electro-funk inspired tracks that evoke the feel and sound of late 70’s & early 80’s club classics. Think of classic acts like D Train, Sinnamon, and singers like Chaka Khan, Maxine Singelton, Sharon Redd and you will already start to understand where this new project is rooted.

Kicking off this authentically disco style 5 track, 12 inch single and download single is Waste Of Time, a shimmering, soulful and devilishly catchy mid tempo groover. Graeme Pogsons’ synthesizer bass lines are so evocative of that era , they act like a musical time machine! This is perfect summer time soul.

Sensational (which has a sensational video to accompany it) hits a little harder, the beats, bass line and Kylie’s vocals will drive you onto the dance-floor and stay there until the very last note and begging for more. Good Time Girl doesn’t let the pressure drop for a second and also features a fantastic proto-rap contribution from King Merc – whilst Family Tree (the title track from the forthcoming album) is pure Saturday night, feel good disco aimed at the ears and dancing feet.

The last track Rewards is yet another supremely insistent and catchy song that provides a tantalising hint of the goodies to come when Family Tree finally sees release later this year…can you wait?

Deep Street Soul – Come Alive!
Friday, June 3rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Deep Street Soul – Come Alive!

Image: 1603930 Australia’s Deep Street Soul, since signing to Freestyle Records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset – with even the MC5’s Wayne Kramer saying that their version of Kick Out The Jams “… is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”.

From their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up ‘Look Out, Watch Out’ (and the addition of vocalist mighty May Johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them.

2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. Whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. Case in point is Souls Come Alive – from Monique Boggia’s Wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and May Johnson’s simply exemplary singing – the songs’ instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music.

Come Alive also features guest vocalists Joshua Tavares and Kylie Auldist – Come Alive is Deep Street Souls finest work – no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. It’s a done deal.

2016 sees the band return with this two track teaser taken from the new album ‘Come Alive!’, and it’s clear from the outset that the group have taken it up a level with Mighty May making her presence felt on both sides of this heavy 45.

Souls Come Alive leaps from the speakers with Monique Boggia’s electric piano intro, the blistering horns kick like a donkey behind May Johnson’s simply exemplary singing – the songs’ catchy appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic 21st century soul music. the flipside Done Me Wrong also doesn’t let the pressure drop for a second.

Without a doubt this new single proves Deep Street Soul have delivered two extremely tough and uncompromising slabs of raw funk & soul that hints at the stunning album to come.

Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers – African Party
Friday, July 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers – African Party

Image: 1597394 Ginger Johnson’s life is one of the greatest untold stories of African music in Europe. Born George Folunsho Johnson in Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria in 1916. Aged just 18 he joined the Nigerian Navy, and made his first visit to Britain. After World War II Ginger decided to make London his home, working with many artists including British saxophone legend Ronnie Scott who first really utilised Gingers amazing technique to full effect, featuring him in not only his live concerts, but also several recordings for the Esquire jazz label in the 1940’s & 50’s.

In the 60’s Ginger was mentor & guru to a young Fela Kuti. Gingers London home became a vibrant hub of African music activity for Fela and an entire host of musicians who would gather there to exchange news, talk, eat and jam for hours on end. To Fela, and all who gravitated towards Ginger’s home, he was simply known and addressed as ‘Father’.

Aside from his music, Ginger was something of a social activist. Not only was he a musical educator, and instrumental in the beginnings of The Notting Hill Carnival, he also opened his own venue Club Iroko in Haverstock Hill, North London, which was a creative hub for groups like Osibisa, and also a welcoming hang out for visiting legends like Sun Ra, George Clinton and Funkadelic, and British group Cymande (3 members of Cymande cut their teeth playing in Gingers group).

Ginger and his group performed at The Royal Variety Performance, his music featured in the James Bond film ‘Live & Let Die’ and Ginger himself appears on screen drumming in the Hammer Films cult classic ‘She’. As a session musician he played for a bewilderingly wide range of acts such as Georgie Fame, Osibisa, Madeleine Bell and Quincy Jones. Ginger & his group also collaborated with many early rock bands such as Hawkwind, Argent, Thunderclap Newman, Genesis and Little Free Rock.

Perhaps Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers most high profile live engagement was performing with The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park in 1969, as Ginger his troupe provided the percussive, high energy rhythmic bedrock to the infamous live version of Sympathy For The Devil.

Freestyle Records is incredibly proud to reissue the music of Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers. Its bedrock of African drums, hi life, and jazz was in fact the precursor to Afrobeat – and Gingers direct and vital influence upon Afrobeat, as guide & mentor to it’s undisputed champion Fela Kuti is just one part of a fascinating and underappreciated story that only now is being recognised for its significance.

Image: 1594963 The contemporary reggae world was rocked and happily shocked when Freestyle Records unleashed Kalbata & Mixmonster’s Congo Beat The Drum album in 2014. The wholly analogue, old school production combined with the classic Jamaican vocalists featured such as Little John, Major Mackerel, Echo Minott had everyone from Toddla T to Robert Elms absolutely raving about the albums genuine roots and culture feel.

And now Freestyle presents another single, Inna Skateland, that features legend Puddy Roots on vocals, whose voice is brilliantly well suited to the dub heavy, reverb laden music. The flip side, Skateland Dub, is a brand new track, not featured on the album and is 100% exclusive to this brand new release!

Shaolin Afronauts – Follow The Path
Friday, October 3rd, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Shaolin Afronauts – Follow The Path

Image: 1591746 The driving force of The Shaolin Afronuats is Ross McHenry, the ARIA nominated composer, bandleader, producer and bassist based in Adelaide. Alongside co collaborators Lachlan Ridge and Dylan Marshall, It is their opmbined wide ranging musical tastes, impeccable production and instrumental skills that always result in music that is original, thought provoking, unexpected and quite beautiful.

2011’s debut album ‘Flight Of The Ancients’ was a critical and commercial success story. The follow up ‘Quest Under Capricorn’ further cemented the bands reputation for forging their own very particular sound – and now in 2014 – as the band prepare to tour Japan & Europe (including 2 prestigious shows at The Glastonbury Festival) Freestyle Records is proud to present the expansive & epic Follow The Path.

Follow The Path is a 21 track, double album that expands upon and delves further into the musical genres that inspire and influence the group – rhythmic and pulsating afrobeat, and the avant-garde/spiritual jazz inspired by artists such as Sun Ra and Mulatu Astatke.

One superb example of how this band execute their musical vocabulary is Ojo Abameta, a percussive & frenetic number, built on a bed of amazing percussion and topped off with some deeply sweet ensemble horns, the end result is reminiscent of African hi life sounds which acts as a curtain raiser for this incredible album. The albums title track ‘Follow The Path’ uses afrobeat as a template, but with strong funk undercurrents, as the insistent beat underpins the beautiful ensemble horns and bubbling analogue synth sounds to dramatic and hypnotic effect.

In contrast, the second volume emphasises The Shaolin Afronauts more experimental and introspective side. As an example, the three part suite Outside Beyond/Three Ways Back is a genuine musical journey that takes the listener through many musical moods and textures…,this is deep, spiritually rooted music that locates the band almost in a genre of their very own – having such an original and individual approach and sound.
