Various – CoOp presents: Selectors Assemble
Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – CoOp presents: Selectors Assemble

Image: 1610193 First Word Records are very proud to present a heavyweight EP in collaboration with seminal groove collective, CoOp: ‘Selectors Assemble’. It’s been almost two decades since a bunch of music makers, bored of the genre constraints of their time, began toying with time signature and syncopation to birth what is now known as broken beat. Summer 2017, the ‘Selectors Assemble’ EP is in our laps and we have a fitting reminder and long-overdue renaissance of one of London’s most valuable musical movements.

IG Culture and Alex Phountzi were integral to this movement, the focal point being the CoOp club night, which ran predominantly on the famed floors of Plastic People, up until 2007. CoOp remerged late in 2015 as a Boiler Room session, in which the originators linked effortlessly with new school players such as K15 and Alex Nut. The following day, a session was inspired between an assortment of artists, and the seeds were planted for the ‘Selectors Assemble’.

Here we have the first offering. The steady-paced roller of ‘Gangz’ (IG & Seiji), the dutty wine-ready getdown of Henry Wu’s ‘Substance’, the heads-down low-end theory of ‘2nd Intention’, the dominant soundclash call-out of the ‘Spartan Riddim’, riding out with the garage-flecked jam ‘Can’t Hold It’, also featuring Sonar’s Ghost (Domu). Five tracks deeply rooted in groove and as beautifully diverse as Bruk ever was.

Pressed up lovingly onto 140g vinyl, this release is accompanied with a fully-printed insert, featuring an extensive piece on the history of Bruk, written by Andwot (Touching Bass), classic photography by Sarah Ginn, and full-colour artwork by Mitchy Bwoy, a legendary artist to the original scene in his own right. This is an essential artefact for followers of the sound, new and old.

First Word prides itself on its ethos of musical diversity, and we’re ecstatic to welcome aboard the CoOp foundation to the stable. A crew of British dance music pioneers, sound-system legends, and now-school heavyweights, this is but a taste of what’s to come. Lead by the don IG Culture, the family spirit has quickly formed, the selectors have assembled.

The stage has been set for bruk’s second wind. Be ready.

Tracklisting
1. Henry Wu – Substance (IG Culture & Alex Phountzi Remix)
2. Son of Scientist – Spartan Riddim
3. NameBrandSound & Sonar’s Ghost – Can’t Hold It
4. Alex Phountzi – 2nd Intention (feat. IG Culture & Henry Wu)

Various – FW is 10 – Future Classics
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – FW is 10 – Future Classics

Image: 1596724 Over the last year we’ve been celebrating the 10th birthday of First Word Records with a series of releases and events. To round out the festivities we’ve put together the third in our series of 10″ vinyl EPs. EP One, ‘Second Chance’ was a compilation of our best selling (but now out of print) vinyl releases, EP Two ‘Most Wanted’ was the best of the catalogue not previously available on vinyl, and the third ‘Future Classics’ is the pick of our current output, with a couple of exclusives added for good measure.

Side A opens with kidkanevil’s ‘One for the One’, a trademark soulful hip hop beat taken from the producer’s soon-come beat tape. Next up is Fulgeance & DJ Scientist’s ‘Vendetta’: the brooding, Eastern Block-influenced beat is a standout track from their ‘Soviet Tape’ album. This side is rounded out with Essa’s seismic ‘LeLeLe’, produced by Flako and featuring Kashmere of Strange U. Straight banger! On the flip we have Souleance’s remix of Quiet Dawn’s ‘Golden Moments’, which is everything we’ve come to expect from the French duo. The EP is completed with another remix, this time Throwing Snow’s fractured rework of Frameworks’ Dawn.

Tracklisting
1. kidkanevil – One For The One
2. Fulgeance & DJ Scientist – Vendetta
3. Essa – LeLeLe (feat. Kashmere)
4. Quiet Dawn – Golden Moments (Souleance Remix) [feat. Sarah Gessler]

Frameworks (Ft. QNC) – Back To The Music/Classic (Renegades of Jazz RMX)
Wednesday, January 28th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Frameworks (Ft. QNC) – Back To The Music/Classic (Renegades of Jazz RMX)

Image: 1595005 After the success of their first single on Hero Records, ‘Ain’t No Use’ , Manchester producer Frameworks (aka Matt Brewer) and legendary New York MCs QNC (aka Q-Ball and Curt Cazal) return with the brand new soul-tinged head-nooder, ‘Back To The Music’. Backed with the funk-fuelled Renegades of Jazz remix of their, ahem, classic tune ‘Classic’this double-sider updates old school hip hop values for 2015.

QNC should need no introduction but if you have been hiding under a rock for the last 25 years then they have released a bagful of singles on seminal labels such as Gee Street , D&D and Chopped Herring as well as the album “Dynamic Duo” on Grand Central and have been featured on releases by the likes of Aim and Rae & Christian. Not forgetting Curt Cazal’s former group, the highly influential, JVC FORCE of ‘Strong Island’ fame.

Frameworks has released the downtempo ‘Vanish’ and ‘Old Friend’ EPs on First Word Records featuring vocalists such as Kathrin DeBoer from Belleruche and Island Records’ JP Cooper as well a couple of albums from his ‘Brickbuilders’ project alongside BluRum 13 (One Self) on My First Moth. He is currently finishing his debut solo album release for First Word Records.

Renegades of Jazz (aka David Hanke aka Little Trooper aka one half of Mash & Munkee) has just released the single ‘Fire’ featuring Aspects and his second album ‘Paradide Lost’ on Agogo Records and has remixed the likes of Brownout, Chris Read, Skeewiff, Colman Brothers, Jungle Fire, Nick Pride & The Pimptones, Weekend Sun, Daytoner, Herma Puma and, well just about everyone!

Tracklisting
1. Back To The Music (feat. QNC)
2. Classic (Renegades of Jazz Remix) [feat. QNC] Available from 06.02.2015

Image: 1591168 Mecca:83, Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble & DistantStarr are Redefinition: a trio consisting of two musician-producers and one emcee.

Heavily influenced by classic Brazilian music of the 60’s and 70’s, Bahia Affair blends elements of bossa percussion with MPC beats and ample Fender Rhodes licks. The narrative is held down by DistantStarr, while Mecca & Crates trade layers of keyboards and synths to flesh out the groove.

The single is backed up by a B-Side music from much hyped Netherlands-based hip hop producer Moods, who adds his own keyboard heavy interpretation of the track.

Buscrates’ recent project with Sam Champ (as ‘Extra Medium’) was heralded by DJ Spinna, Jon Oliver and more.

Various – FW is 10 – Second Chance
Thursday, July 24th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – FW is 10 – Second Chance

Image: 1590662 First Word Records started in 2004 as a collaboration between Leeds promoter Aly Gillani (DJ Gilla) and Sheffield DJ Andy H. The duo felt that the fertile music scene in their corner of the UK wasn’t getting the exposure it deserved and thus FW was born. Originally releasing music from their friends and peers (kidkanevil, Homecut, The Haggis Horns) the label has expanded over the years to include artists from across the globe including Souleance (France), Yosi Horikawa (Japan), Tall Black Guy (US), Ross McHenry (Australia) and Comfort Fit (Germany). Now based in London the label has now notched up over 100 releases and built a worldwide following.

To celebrate their first decade the label have put together some 10″ vinyl releases (what else!) with a selection of some of the best releases of the last 10 years. The first, subtitled ‘Second Chance’ features 4 tracks that are no longer available on vinyl. The Haggis Horns unmistakable ‘Traveller Part Two’ is given a new mix for 2014 – the original 12″ release of this one changes hands for over £50 a time! There’s also Souleance’s ‘One Step Re-Edit’ from their debut EP ‘Le Monde’, Tall Black Guy’s ‘The Dark Streets’ from ‘8 Miles To Moenart’ album and Lotek’s ‘Rebel Hifi’ from 2010’s ‘International Rudeboy’. All 4 tracks are guaranteed dance floor destroyers – this is one of those records that discerning DJs won’t want to leave home without!

Die natürliche Chemie der Band war aber so stark, dass die Bandmitglieder instinktiv weiter zusammen Musik machten, nachdem die Show beendet war. Souleance – Brotha EP
Friday, November 29th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Souleance – Brotha EP

Image: 1586020 Souleance return with a brand new EP for First Word Records. Following the huge success of ‘La Beat Tape’ in early 2013, the French duo have been busy in the studio preparing a 6-tracker aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Souleance is the result of the partnership between producer Fulgeance (check his new LP ‘Cubes’) and DJ Soulist of legendary Paris event What The Funk. In 2008 they released their debut EP ‘Le Monde’ which along with follow up ‘Le Plaisir’ is one of First Word’s all-time bestsellers. 2012 saw their debut LP ‘La Belle Vie’ released to widespread critical acclaim, winning them fans including Gilles Peterson, Lefto and Laurent Garnier. With an eye-catching live show now up and running (check their recent charismatic appearance on Boiler Room for evidence) Souleance are going from strength to strength.

The new EP is exactly what you’d expect from Souleance, taking in 80s influenced electro (Brotha, Broobecker & Vacances), audacious sample flips (Georgian Kiss), infectious-grooved hip hop (Mais Um) and up-tempo tropical beats (Tropicalidad). All six tracks are guaranteed club winners that only Souleance could deliver.

“Da pure funkyness! Love this, will present on my radio show.” (Laurent Garnier)
“Sweet! Got so much love for these guys. Airplay 20/1013” (Tom Whalley)
“Great follow on from the album, amazing stuff as always!” (Tim Parker)
“Amazing, thanks.” (Thristian)
“Next level boogie cut ups…love it!” (Nick Luscombe)
“Exquisitely nasty! Exactly what I would know better than to expect from these two!” (Jeremy Sole)

2. Broobecker
3. Georgian Kiss
4. Mais Um
5. Tropicalidad
6. Vacances Available from 08.11.2013

The Fontanelles – Pinprick / Criminality
Sunday, July 7th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Fontanelles – Pinprick / Criminality

Image: 1581482 The Fontanelles are the newest signings to First Word Records. Originally formed to be the onstage band for the London run of Fela! The Musical, the band’s natural chemistry was such that they instinctively continued performing together when the show ended. They took the energy of the stage show and started working on original material, adding reggae, ethio-jazz and ska influences to the afrobeat source. The Fontanelles sound is truly their own, with their incandescent live shows a focal point for their unique energy as a band.

For their first release we’ve picked two live favourites that showcase just a fraction of the band’s deep sound. ‘Criminality’ is a straight-ahead afro-stomper, bringing the band’s virtuoso skills as musicians to the fore, whilst still funky enough to move any dancefloor. ‘Pinprick’ takes in the slightly dubbier influences of the band, with an elastic bass-line underpinning a seriously catchy horn-led hook.

Tracklisting

1. Pinprick
2. Criminality Available from 17.06.2013
