Stealth – Desert Storm / The Truth (feat. MC Fats)
Wednesday, October 21st, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Stealth – Desert Storm / The Truth (feat. MC Fats)

Image: 1600473 Brooding, sonically unrepentant and oozing with the kind of stylistic sophistication Stealth is renowned for, this next single on Program sees the welcome return of an underground titan.

Fierce yet technically adept, ‘Desert Storm’ reintroduces you to a producer who helped to chisel Program’s persona. Stealth takes you deep into its composition, amongst falling amen breaks and cleverly distorted bassline, which only adds to the track’s moody atmospherics. Through hollowed out horn samples and clucking drum rolls, you’re thrown into subterranean riddim of flying beats, underpinned by a sub which ricochets throughout.

Flipside ‘The Truth’ is fronted by one of the most renowned MC’s of the last decades. With Fat’s on vocals, you’re taken into a vastly different double A, with the MC adding a soulful twist amid piano arpeggio loops, elongated before cascading into the mix. Underpinned by strummed guitar plucks and shivering percussion, it demonstrates Stealth’s ability to hone in on his art, presenting two diverse subjects.

Stealth’s return will only see momentum grow. With an album looming, expect his catalogue of ruminating dancefloor numbers to expand into the New Year. You know the deal, it’s once again…time to get with the Program!

Fatnice – Peace Love Unity and Havin Fun
Friday, June 20th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Fatnice – Peace Love Unity and Havin Fun

Image: 1589954 DJ support from Rich Medina, Kev Beadle, DJ Cash Money, Eavesdrop Radio and KCRW. Fatnice is multi talented to say the least. The avant garde MC, producer, singer, and writer grew up listening to tons of records and tapes from his aunts collections which were comprised primarily of soul and funk gems. A prolific house head, Fatnice became entrenched in the boombap sounds of hiphop via the roar of Melle Melle rhyming The Message in 1982. An avid writer of poetry Fatnice found it addicting being able to combine rhymes with beats to create music.

Born in Chicago and being in love with education, Fatnice traveled to Atlanta, GA, in 1992 in pursuit of higher learning at Clark Atlanta University. During his matriculation Fatnice continued to delve deep into the abyss of music via record collecting, checking out shows at the famous Funk Jazz Cafe, and battling MC’s around the Atlanta University Center. Although Fatnice had been performing since the age of 11, he would get a true taste of the stage upon landing in the City of Philadelphia in the fall of 98.

Fatnice found himself in Philadelphia, once again pursuing higher learning and rocking open mics on the campus of The University of Pennsylvania’s’ Veranda Room(The Gathering). Shortly after his arrival Fatnice linked with classmate Darin Tolliver (aka Gamez) and became a member of Philly juggernaut Prophets of Ghetto having the honor of opening up for the likes of Public Enemy and Dilated Peoples. Upon graduating from PENN in 2000, Fatnice’s decision to stay in Philly led him to a life of recording and traveling internationally with the now defunct Philadelphia based hiphop trio 84. Fatnice has had the humbling experience of working with greats such as DJ Cash Money, Bahamadia, Cee Knowledge of Digable Planets and a host of others.

Presently Fatnice, a true believer in the art of moving the crowd, still performs, records and writes as well as flexing his vocal talents under the alias Mojo Green. Along with his production partner Blaak the 9th Man, the two have created Welcome To Soulville where Fatnice releases material such as his project ‘It’s Nice To Meet You’

“Soulville is like being on a runaway train with no direction..You don’t know what to expect..All you know is that it will be a soulful & funky ride musically..” (DJ Cash Money)

“Fat Nice & Blaak The 9th Man are two of Philadelphia’s best kept musical secrets. People really have no idea how deep their sonic rabbit hole goes. These guys got more talent in their left pinky finger nails than many of your favorite pop stars have in their entire entourages. Yeah, I said that. Welcome to Soulvillle.” (Rich Medina)

“Soulville is like a never ending well of knowledge & Fatnice/Blaak are like the men who replenishes the people of the village.” (Hezekiah)

Father Funk – Ghetto Funk presents
Friday, May 2nd, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Father Funk – Ghetto Funk presents

Image: 1589086 Father Funk is a superhero. Big with the bass and big with the beats, he’s one of the Ghetto Funk scene’s sharpest up and coming talents… Lost in Michael Jackson’s woodland estate young Will Williamson was a happy soul, breast fed and reared by a family of disco Llamas, he’d canter hither and tither to his heart’s content, chewing on the lush grass and shrubs planted way back in the Motown days.

Until the day the bulldozers arrived to clear the estate and mine the fabled Tree of Soul. Outraged, the Llamas quickly militarised and Will found himself leading the Llama army against the machines. Sadly for Will and the Llamas, they were trained in combat by Bubbles, Michael Jackson’s favourite monkey and could only offer thrown semen and faeces against their metal foe and it was over as soon as it began. But as is the way with super heroes, Will didn’t die. He was spirited away and placed in a montage, where over the proceeding years he grew strong, running along beaches and up and down steps to Bill Conti’s Theme from Rocky.

Five Deez producer Fat Jon is Maurice Galactica. His solo-album “Humanoid Erotica” proves once again that he is a true hip hop architect. His beats are as versatile as a Bambaataa old school-set and he couldn’t care less about the rules and regulations that dictate the hip hop sound of MTV. So kick back, relax and find out what the Cincinnati kid has got to say.

Black Moon – Enta Da Stage (Remixes)
Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Black Moon – Enta Da Stage (Remixes)

Image: 1615792 2017 Remixed & Remastered Edition / Composed of members Buckshot, 5ft, and DJ Evil Dee, Black Moon simultaneously kicked off and defined the rap renaissance of New York with the release of Enta Da Stage in 1993. Whereas plenty of earlier groups had spit rage-filled rhymes to tear down the world’s unjust establishments, no one had evoked brooding pathos or introspective anger quite like Black Moon. Underground hip-hop might have been dominated by the sunny sound of G-Funk when Enta Da Stage dropped, but from then on the scene turned to the dark side. Black Moon was rising.

Earlier this year, Fat Beats Records presented the definitive Enta Da Stage box set, which was reissued for the first time across three formats (6xLP, 3xCD and 3xCassette). This album is the complete encapsulation of an era for anyone seeking to understand the origin and the essence of New York’s Golden Age.The box set included vocals, instrumentals and remixes plus extensive liner notes by David Ma (Pitchfork, Wax Poetics) with rare and unreleased visual ephemera in an 18 page booklet. The story of Black Moon, alongside their peers Biggie, Big L, Nas, Kool G Rap, and Wu Tang, reminds us that the bleakest times produce the most profound agents of cultural change. And as we stand at the precipice of a new age of anxiety, Enta Da Stage has never been more relevant… or more necessary.

Although Black Moon would go on to release three more albums – and its members would go on to greatness with Da Beatminerz, Boot Camp Klik, and various solo projects – Enta Da Stage remains the perfect distillation of tight lyrical menace, rowdy crew hooks, stripped down breaks, and deep basslines on all of its fourteen tracks. Although Enta Da Stage might stand in the shadow of East Coast albums such as Enter the Wu- Tang (36 Chambers), Illmatic, Liquid Swords, Ready to Die, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and The Infamous, history will remember that Enta Da Stage preceded those releases. To understand Enta Da Stage is to understand the origin and the spirit of New York hip-hop once and for all.

IDE – Force Fed
Friday, March 10th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on IDE – Force Fed

Image: 1609111 In celebration of the 10th anniversary of “Force Fed” we have teamed
up with Fat Beats to release this limited edition colored vinyl.
“The debut album from Ide the Shanty One, “Force Fed” is a verbal
maelstrom whipping through the placid seas of 21st century
underground hip-hop with thunderous beats and lightning-strike lyrics.
Ide displays his furious command of the mic over 23 dark and storming
beats, his imaginative and visceral word-warping and unrelenting ?ow
striking listeners with gut-punch directness. Following Jak Progresso’s
“Random Violence” as the 2nd full-length release from Creative Juices
Music, “Force Fed” heralds the charge of this new artist onto the NY
underground scene: Ide the Shanty One. Already earning respect for
expert production and engineering for various underground artists, now
Ide brings forth this manifesto of disgust and impatience with a twisted
culture and reminds listeners why hip-hop is NOT dead. Throughout his
frst lp, he avoids lecturing about society directly but instead proclaims
this gritty mission statement championing subversive artistry and
psychic exploration. This Creative Juices Music release gathers a total
of 10 producers, including Domingo, Deep and Ben Boogz (2 Hungry
Bro’s/Creative Juices), DJ Connect (Elite Fleet), and others, as well as
Ide himself, yet projects a unifed sonic stampede of steel-toed hip-hop.
Joining The Shanty One on the mic are U.G. (Cella Dwellas), Savage
Messiah (formerly of Scienz of Life), Critical, Madness, Alucard, Jak
Progresso, and L.I.F.E.Long (Stronghold), all contributing cinematic
similes in an unrelenting ?ood. Ide’s “Force Fed” is compelling in
its ferocity, and ftting that he is initiating his chapter in music in the
company of these well-known fgures on the underground scene.”Force
Fed” is for hungry listeners, who’ve had enough of the formula, and
don’t mind a little pain if their rap would only get its edge back. This
brazen debut album from Ide the Shanty One is a sure classic for 2007
and another strong product from the Creative Juices Music label.

• 10th anniversary release – Colored vinyl limited edition 300

Featuring Dam-Funk, Phat Kat, Frank N Dank, and more, the album
signifies a stylistic sea change for Blu, best known for his dusty,
soul sampling collaborations with Exile (Below the Heavens) and his
own introspective opuses (Her Favorite Colour, Good to be Home,
York!). Rippling with 808s and cinematic strings, Cheetah in the
City is an organic evolution from the synth-soaked, futuristic sound
of Analogtronics, UNION’s 2012 Fat Beats Records debut album
featuring Talib Kweli, MF DOOM, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, and more.
After mutual friends put them in touch at a Parisian post-show
after-party, Blu and Union began a musical exchange that spanned
continents. Blu returned to LA with UNION’s best beats, and after
months of exchanging lyrical ideas, the trio regrouped for marathon
recording sessions in UNION’s Paris-based studio. Cloistered for
weeks with nothing but drum machines, instruments, keyboards,
records, and France’s best bud, Blu became obsessed with infusing
his kicked back Southern California sensibilities into UNION’s
penchant for pushing the possibilities of technicality into multilayered, densely packed productions. A cohesive story emerged in
the songwriting: a young man, raised amongst deadbeats, killers,
and hard drugs, metamorphoses into the Cheetah, a money-making
predator whose quick talk and cold hustle make him the king of a city
that will eventually consume him, heart and soul.
We’ve never heard Blu like this.

Non Phixion – The Future Is Now
Friday, October 21st, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Non Phixion – The Future Is Now

Image: 1607107 Non Phixion drops a re-realse n of the group’s classic debut “The Future Is Now.” Available exclusively through Fat Beats. “Utilizing beats that would do Dr. Octagon-era Dan “The Automator” proud and rhyming schemes that bring to mind early Wu-Tang Clan or mid-’90s Gang Starr, Non Phixion exposes the sound of true underground hip-hop. This is music that reflects the sound and attitude of countless rappers selling their albums out of the back of their cars or in booths on the street, cutting together dirty and disjointed sounds with a confidence and quality that is unique to this particular genre. This would all be for nothing if it wasn’t for the excellent raps from Ill Bill, Goretex, and Sabac Red, a trio of rappers who have a Tribe Called Quest-like chemistry. Their clever lyrics, respectable skills, and rough voices make this an intense and dark landmark in alternative rap.”

Wun Two – Baker’s Dozen: Wun Two

Dozen, an exclusive vinyl series that shines a light on the best minds of
instrumental hip-hop, ambient, and electronic music. Each installment
gives one artist carte blanche to capture their signature sound.
Every volume’s 500-unit strictly limited vinyl pressing features one
artist and twelve tracks, and comes equipped with a 5×7” postcard

packaged with the utmost attention to detail, Baker’s Dozen is a series
that speaks up for artists whose craft renders voices superfluous,
whose instrumentals alone suffice to make a statement.
Volume Three highlights German producer Wun Two, whose inspiration
and process is best described in his own words:
“I used to listen to all kinds of music when I was a small child. As a
teenager I decided to try to make my own music, but I never had the
intention of making it available to the public. Maybe five or six years
ago a good friend told me to put some stuff on a Soundcloud page, and
everything else took its course.
When it comes to making beats, I tend to follow the same scheme…I
listen to a lot of music and if I find something that I’m feeling I try to
make something with it. I’ll program an easy drum pattern and chop the
sample or a whole loop to it and add a bass line. I try to make simple
instrumentals, because I don’t play the instruments myself, but rather
create something that I would call a ‘collage’.
I grew up and studied in a small quiet village surrounded by forests. In
this context I would say my music, this “collage”, sounds calm and very
much inspired by nature. I just do what I feel, the compositions always
mimic this inspiration.”

The Dandelion Set – A Thousand Strands 1975-2015 (Ltd. Edition)
Friday, May 13th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Dandelion Set – A Thousand Strands 1975-2015 (Ltd. Edition)

Image: 1602760 From the edge of Germany’s Black Forest to the English hamlets of Dorset, THE DANDELION SET make psyched-out, blow-your-mind sound nuggets with the (un)self-conscious freedom of the 70’s. Drawing on library music, radiophonics & Krautrock, the band produce a heady mix of psychedelia, prog, folk & electronics with beautiful sounds created on harpsichord, 12 string and acoustic guitars, electric bass, moog, woodwinds, autoharp with fat beats & tripped-out effects. Sleeve notes by legendary writer & graphic novelist ALAN MOORE

This incredible debut album also features vocals & sleeve notes by legendary writer + graphic novelist ALAN MOORE (V For Vendetta, The Watchmen, Swamp Thing, The Killing Joke, League Of Extraordinary Gentleman).
Produced by GLYN BUSH (Lightning Head, Rockers Hi-Fi, The Black Albumen, Magic Drum Orchestra) & lifelong friend PK CHOWN the album reflects their love of a huge range of musical styles, with the emphasis on un-formularized tunes & originality over familiarity. This is a very special record that we expect to sell fast ! Each release format contains a unique combination of tracks, rarities & exclusive material.

Volume One highlights Los Angeles born / Sacramento based beat maker Dibiase, whose style is best described in his own words: “It’s crazy to think that my equipment collection and beat making
process started back in high school with just an 8 second Gemini sampler and a Sony Walkman. It was a super basic set up. Back then I used whatever I could get my hands on. Finding different samples, looping them up, running the layers back through the Walkman. Adding more layers and repeating that process until I had a beat. It worked. My process is a lot different now but in some ways it’s the same. I still do a lot of layering. I use a combination of hardware and software. Sometimes I start with a sample. Sometime I start with drums. It depends on my mood and the genre. Sometime I use a kit. Other times I will sample and layer drums, run them through another piece of equipment like the SP-12 or 404 to dirty them up, then dump them back into Ableton.
I really don’t have a set way of doing things musically. I like to experiment with different technics and styles. I like my music to have a certain sound. Most of the time I let the process happen naturally.”

DJ Soko – Domino Effect (Colored Vinyl)
Friday, July 10th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DJ Soko – Domino Effect (Colored Vinyl)

Image: 1597875 Michigan native DJ Soko is part of a long line of great technical DJ’s, musical innovators, curators and those who broke key artists and introduced acts that forever changed the landscape of the music scene. Soko’s ear and ability to put emcees in position for them to shine over the perfect production is never more evident than it is on his debut project released on his imprint Left Of Center. DJ Soko uses his years coming up in the Detroit scene, his experiences DJ’ing in his current home (the planet of Brooklyn, NY) then blends both of those worlds together seamlessly. The end result is a gritty, boom bap Rap album that is equally as soulful and introspective as it is rooted in a blue collar lyrical Hip-Hop aesthetic. “Domino Effect” is ultimately brought together by Soko’s deft cuts and scratches which elevate each composition and make them resonate with listeners even further.

DJ Soko picked from the best and brightest among his immediate circle of associates, including his crew members The Left (Apollo Brown & Journalist 103). Soko reached out to groups like Clear Soul Forces and Ugly Heroes in addition to heavy hitters and veterans like Guilty Simpson, Finale, Marvwon, Kaimbr, Hassaan Mackey and Rasheed Chappell all the way down to up and comers like Nolan The Ninja, Stryfe and Jae Musick then matched them up with production harder than frozen over sidewalks in February provided by Apollo Brown, Def Dee, Newstalgia, Slimkat78 and NAMELESS amongst others. “Domino Effect” refers to when an event sets off a chain reaction of events or by-products that grow progressively larger and larger in scope over time.

Each beat sets the stage for the emcees. Each verse sets up the next verse and ramps up the level of lyricism. Each one of DJ Soko’s scratches push the beat and lyrics forward even further. This happens song after song over the entire project until the final product stands out amongst an era of disposable music. “The Domino Effect” is about seeking to make timeless art in hopes that propels the next project then another thus creating a much larger domino effect which spreads until it results in better quality music being released across the board. Just press play and watch what happens next…Album available August 21st, 2015 on Soko’s Left Of Center imprint, distributed through Fat Beats.
