Cookin’ On 3 Burners Remix von “This Girl” begeistert Clubgänger genauso wie Pop-Fans.

Ngozi Family – Day Of Judgement
Tuesday, April 26th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ngozi Family – Day Of Judgement

Image: 1603821 Proto-punk and garage Zamrock: the celebrated guitarist Paul
Ngozi’s essential debut album. Featuring Chrissy Zebby Tembo

Guitarist/vocalist Paul Ngozi’s debut album – under the name Ngozi Family – is an important record: not just in the Zamrock genre,
but in the global rock canon. Day of Judgement is an introduction to the most intense, raw and inimitable golden era Zamrock
recorded, as it paved the way for a dozen Paul Ngozi and Ngozi Family releases (the most famous being drummer Chrissy Zebby
Tembo’s My Ancestors) that straddled the line between funk and punk, of driving hard rock and Zambian folk melodies and rhythms.
Day of Judgement was released in 1976, the same year as other, now famous, Zamrock albums, from WITCH’s Lazy Bones!! to Rikki
Ililonga’s Zambia. But it sounds like none of its counterparts. Part of that stems from its frenzied primitivism, the Ngozi Family’s
attempt to overcome a lack of musical acumen with sheer force of will.
That will allowed Paul Ngozi to overcome a humble upbringing to become the most unlikely combination: Zamrock’s most beloved
star in its brief but now-well chronicled arc, the only musician to maintain his fame and recording prowess in the dark ages of the
’80s, an inspiration to not only aging but young Zambians — and now others, beyond Zambia’s borders.
But one cannot imagine Paul Ngozi without this album, a full-on aural assault that sounds as wild nearly forty years after its release
as it must have sounded in the developing Zamrock landscape from which it emerged. We listen to this anachronistic yet prescient
album now as a wholly original, completely unpredictable album in line with those from mavericks from across the world – from the
Ramones to the Sex Pistols to Death. And, though it’s been over two decades since Paul Ngozi’s passing, his voice and vision still
seem exciting, powerful, unique, unvarnished, new.

Family Atlantica – Cosmic Unity
Thursday, April 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Family Atlantica – Cosmic Unity

Image: 1603468 Award-winning, London-based Family Atlantica are back with their far-reaching second album ‘Cosmic Unity’, which follows on from their 2013 eponymous debut – an album that won the band a range of awards including Songlines Magazine’s Best Newcomers 2015.

‘Cosmic Unity’, like the band itself, mirrors the mixed-up, intercontinental terrain of their home town. Moving through genres as diverse as psychedelic highlife, steel- pan Ethio-funk, calypso, biao and scorching equatorial jazz underpinned by deep afro-Atlantic dance rhythms, they have created a cohesive, forward-looking sound that echoes classic tropical recordings of the past whilst still sounding fresh and contemporary. Lush string and horn arrangements give way to acidic commentary on the immigration system and slavery as well as incantations of unity.

Producer and multi-instrumental director, Jack Yglesias (also a core member of the underground pysch-jazz-funk unit The Heliocentrics) leads the explosive ensemble. Alongside Jack, the band features the powerful vocals and poetry of Venezuelan diva Luzmira Zerpa and the percussive West African mastery of Nigerian/Ghanaian Kwame ‘natural power’ Crentsil as well as Adrian Owusu (Guitar).

Joining them as guests on the album are two musical legends: The Sun Ra Arkestra’s bandleader Marshall Allen on alto saxophone, ewi and vocals, and Nigerian Afro-beat colossus Orlando Julius on tenor sax who was at the time of the recording living with Yglesias and Zerpa. The diversity of the Family Atlantica project is reflected in the lyrics, with singing and poetry in Spanish, English, Yoruba and Portuguese. This is a rapid-fire, rhythm-heavy journey, simultaneously moving between the past and future of trans-Atlantic roots music.

Image: 1601959 In April of 2010, Robert, Bobby, Alberta, Delouse, and Patricia gathered at the home of their parents, Raymond and Joella Walker to make a recording with Michael Reilly. It would be Reilly’s third venture to record the a capella gospel tradition ofComo, Mississippi for Daptone Records. It was during his first recording (The Voices of Panola County: Como Now) that he encountered the Walker family and learned of their great musical tradition. Raymond Walker was courted by both Fred McDowell and Sam Cooke – each asked him to sing behind them on tour.

Respectfully,Raymond declined, on account that the singers wanted him to sing blues rather than gospel. However, it was the Walkers’ voices and not their rich histor y that captured the attention of Daptone and inspired Reilly’s return to Como to make a full-length record of the Walker family songs. Recorded in their living room, these performances are as deep and stirring as they are unembelished. Take a moment to take in Panola County Spirit, with The Walker Family Singers.

KEY MARKETING POINTS:
* CD jewel case includes full color 8-page booklet with liner notes and photos.
* LPs are limited to 1,000 copies worldwide.

Available from 18.03.2016

Available from 29.08.2014

Image: 1584233 Polishing Peanuts DELUXE’s first EP (November 2011) opened the door & created a buzz about the band’s future projects. The 3 first tracks that came out in spring, started to tease the audience’s interest, especially Daniel the EP’s title track (out on May 13th) & the crazy video who came along with it. The long awaited LP drops on September 16th 2013, and goes by the sweet name of The DELUXE Family show.

This first album reflects the maturity acquired by the band during the years, full of tracks as diverse & breathtaking as the fellows mustaches. The jazzy touch, trademark of the band’s first discographic adventures can be found on tracks Extra Mile & Bleed On, Indisposed (feat. Cyph4) & Pretty Flaws are melancholic & dreamy ballads, whereas Family Show & Baby (feat ASM) are hip hop bangers. The LP travels through different styles, it also features several mc’s (Tumi on Too Me, Taiwan Mc on Blocked) and surprises the ears by easily skipping from dub step fuelled rock & roll vibes, to sweet & sour ballads, and even funky disco sounds. With eclecticism, assumed diversity and an urge to tell a story, DELUXE invites his listeners to immerse in this first album’s universe, grooving, moving, bouncing, a real musical melting pot with various horizons.

Available from 20.09.2013

Sunday, June 23rd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Marta Ren & The Groovelvets – 2 Kinds of Men / Summer’s Gone

Image: 1581845 “If there’s a true Soul diva in Portugal, her name is Marta Ren”. Record Kicks proudly presents the debut single of our brand new signing, Marta Ren & The Groovelvets. The Oporto’s combo breaks into the scene with this explosive double sider 45. On the A side the Marva Whitney inspired, TNT Dynamite deep funk’s track “2 Kinds of men” backed by picnic days smashing hit “Summer’s gone (didn’t swim)”, with a super cool video with already loads of plays on YouTube. These two old-school pearls, brilliantly supported by super tight 8 pieces rythm & soul’s combo The Groovelvets, show Marta’s immense talent on vocals. Marta Ren & The Groovelvets are currently in the studio, recording their debut long play scheduled on Record Kicks for end of the year. Marta has been around in the Portuguese scene since the mid 90s lending her deep and powerful voice amongst the others to break-beat outfit The Bombazines, recording two albums and establishing her unique talent at clubs and festivals all around Portugal. But Marta’s passion has always been for the deepest funk and rawest soul of the sixties and now is time for her to go on by herself.

“Loving this! Thankyou to Record Kicks as this Portuguese outfit are an outstanding find!” (Craig Charles)
“?Wow, Marta has a powerful voice on here! More quality soul from the Record Kicks camp?” (DJ Andy Smith)
“what a great vocal over a sleezy funk groove with lashings of fat back drums and powerful brass stabs?..essential nu funk from Record Kicks” (Nik Weston)
“As passionate as Lyn Collins or Vicky Anderson at the height of their JB days. Marta Ren & The Groovelets prove they’ve got what it takes with this explosive &exciting funk bomb. This is top notch!” (Emrys Baird)
“This is just how I like my 45s. Expect great things from the newest members of the RK family.” (Dj Jimy Needles)

Whether it be the roaring Funk Bass intro of ‘It’s Everything About You’ or the Sultry Jazz vocals of Madam Pat Tandy on ‘Just Be Yourself’’ that suits you, it’s no wonder the original Carnival label pressings of both tunes are in big demand. Image: 1603233 Previously unreleased Dayton Ohio Boogie Funk from the label that brought you the lost Aurra tapes from 1984. Webster Station was a demo session recorded for Warner Bros. in 1979. The demo was rejected for not being ’mainstream’ enough for their label and the tape remained in an A&R office for over 3 decades. Family Groove has faithfully restored the original tape for release on limited edition vinyl. 300 copies only.

Aurra x Dam Funk – Somebody
Thursday, September 11th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Aurra x Dam Funk – Somebody

Image: 1590856 ‘Somebody’ is the first single from the new Aurra album ‘Body Rock’ due out later this year on Family Groove Records.

Once again the world gets to experience a lost disco-funk masterpiece providing another glimpse into the genius mind of Slave founding-member Steve Washington & Brides Of Funkenstein / P-Funk singer Sheila Horne. Body Rock will be the second and final unearthing of the lost but found Master Tapes originally recorded for Quincy Jones’ Qwest imprint in 1984. Slap Bass, heavy synths, Linn Drum, sultry vocals… this is Modern Funk at it’s finest!

The 24-track master tapes were transferred digitally and then mixed on an SSL board by Kamal Humphrey at his all-analog Flying Carpet Studios in Los Angeles. The result is a full sound enhanced by the natural analog process using today’s digital technology only when needed to clean up the files.

Da-M-FunK adds a bit of dirt and grime by putting his signature Re-Freak on the track.
A confirmation from Los Angeles’ Ambassador of Boogie Funk that this is in fact the the
un-cut funk and nothing but the funk.

Aurra – Satisfaction
Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Aurra – Satisfaction

Image: 1584173 The mythical ‘Satisfaction’ album by Aurra has been folklore for three decades. There were rumors that a 5th Aurra album produced by Dayton Ohio Funk Legend Steve Washington was recorded just after the Salsoul years. The album was recorded in 1983 with his wife Sheila who had just finished writing and touring with The Brides Of Funkenstein. Plans were made for Quincy Jones’ newly formed Qwest Records, but legal troubles complicated it’s release. No one was quite sure what happened to the master tapes, not even Steve himself.

Then in 2012, the tapes surfaced and Family Groove delivered the music back to Steve Washington & Sheila Brody.

This is electronic funk and R&B at it’s finest, recorded during a pivotal year in modern funk music, post-disco, right at the beginning of hip-hop’s finest hour when boogie and electro music was making the scene in New York. This makes this an important milestone in music and documenting the inception of the drum machine. The grooves smoke, as Washington delivers the Dayton Funk style, with mean and lean basslines, irresistible hooks & towering vocal riffs with crisp, tight dance rhythms.
