The Allergies – Entitled to That / Get Down On You
Thursday, July 6th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Allergies – Entitled to That / Get Down On You

Image: 1610804 Do you long for a time where you could head out have a good time and dance your pants off? Well The Allergies invite you back to the glory days of Northern Soul, high kicks and throwing yourself around the floor with their new single ‘Entitled to That’.

It’s an up tempo stomper with feel-good Soul sensibilities that would be equally at home at the Wigan Casino as it is on today’s festival circuit. Following on in the same vein that made their 6 Music album of the day record – ‘As We Do Our Thing’ so popular, they continue to reshape classic sounds for the modern dancefloor.

Talented Soul songstress Honey Larochelle provides the sass in this peppy number co-penned with The Allergies by regular collaborator Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling). This second single taken from their forthcoming album ‘Push On’ shows they’ve lost none of the verve that made their debut so good, and gives another taste of what to expect from the LP.

They balance out the release nicely with a steady groover in the shape of ‘Get Down On You’ – a steady Funk groove with a catchy bassline and the usual signature flair touches from the guys to keep the crowds entertained.

Boogie Down Productions – Sex And Violence
Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Boogie Down Productions – Sex And Violence

Image: 1597573 Boogie Down Productions was one of the most important hip-hop crews
of the 1980s and ‘90s, and are rightfully revered by both fans and
scholars. First exploding out of the South Bronx in 1986, the group
created an amazing mix of raw power and hyper-intelligence, and gave the
world multiple classics throughout the late ‘80s, under the BPD moniker,
even after losing DJ and chief producer Scott LaRock
to gun violence in 1987.
For reasons unknown, the group’s early 1990s output – which also
includes Live Hardcore Worldwide and Edutainment – lost some luster in
the eyes and ears of fans. But this wasn’t KRS-One’s fault. The legendary
MC never faltered in bringing true intelligence and a forward-thinking
stance to the rap world, even as derivative gangsta rap took over the
music scene on the whole, in the wake of N.W.A..
1992’s Sex & Violence, the last album made under the Boogie Down
Productions name, is a perfect example of an underrated classic, and fans
will appreciate it getting new shine here, to correct its lukewarm reception
upon its initial release. Produced by KRS-One and Pal Joey, the album
explores the darkest sides of the American urban landscape and psyche,
with KRS as narrator, detailing all sides of the matrix.
While singles like the granite hard “Duck Down” and the funky-as-hell “We
In There” got most of the attention in ‘92, the deeper sequence reveals
plenty of additional gems: the history lesson of the dark and dusty “Drug
Dealer”, “Ruff Ruff,” with scowling MC favorite Freddie Foxxx, the
grooving “Questions and Answers”, and the frantic
“How Not To Get Jerked.”
Back on vinyl and ready for another (or, for some, first) listen, fans of
old-school-done-right classics have no excuse this time around.

Georgia Soul Twisters – Look Out (I’m Gonna Blow Your Mind) / Mother Duck
Thursday, May 21st, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Georgia Soul Twisters – Look Out (I’m Gonna Blow Your Mind) / Mother Duck

Image: 1597348 Hopelessly obscure and off the radar to even the most dedicated soul & funksters, here’s a real gem of a funky soul double-sided dancer! The Georgia Soul Twisters started out in the early ’60s and were originally based out of Lyons, GA. They were led by Mose Braziel, nicknamed “Pop” who was the owner and manager. A 10 member touring band, they travelled and played all of the southern states, heading north when gigs presented themselves, although not always being lucrative. They would learn to follow the seasons, in the winter they headed south and then during the summer they hit the road. The band relocated to central Florida by the mid ’60s. While touring in Texas the bands first 45, ‘Soul Shing-a-ling Dance’ b/w ‘Switching Lucielle’, was recorded in Dallas for the Duplex label owned by Jimmy Liggins, with whom Pop had arranged a deal. The group’s second outing was ‘My Love Tonight’ b/w ‘You Shot Me (Through the Grease)’, recorded in 1967 in Tampa, FL and released by Mainstream records via Dave Crawford. The tapes were sent up to New York but Pop decided against the deal and never signed the contract. An offering of 10% per record sales and signing the band to the label for 15 years, he felt wasn’t worth it. The ‘Shot me Through the Grease’ side did get some airplay but was pulled due to the issue with the contract, hence the stock copy being much harder to track down. Pop passed away in 1969 and the band recorded their third and final recording at a small central Florida recording studio some time in the very early ’70s. ‘Look Out (I’m Gonna Blow Your Mind)’ b/w ‘Mother Duck’ was self-financed and self-released, and poor distribution means the record remains extremely elusive to this day. They continued to play into the late ’70s but as members would drop out, get married and replacements became harder to recruit, they finally decided to part ways once and for all.

Image: 1607382 General Steele of Smif-N-Wessun/Boot Camp Clik and Burlington,
Vermont-based producer Es-K present their collaboration album
Building Bridges. Produced mostly by Es-K, the album features
guest appearances from Buckshot of Black Moon, Smoothe Da
Hustler, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Rockness Monsta of Heltah Skeltah,
and a posthumous cameo from his late great partner, Sean Price.
As one half of Smif-N-Wessun, General Steele crashed the hip-hop
scene in the 1990s with their debut album Dah Shinin’ (named a Top
100 Album Of All Time by The Source and a Top 50 Debut Album Of
All Time by Complex). Their last release – 2011’s Monumental – was
produced by Pete Rock, and Steele has also collaborated with Tupac
Shakur, Mary J Blige, 50 Cent, Raekwon and Bounty Killer. Es-K
may be best known for his 2014 album Serenity (listen) as well as his
Spontaneous Grooves beat tape series, where every beat on each
tape was made in one sitting each. A low-key display of introspective
verses, classic cuts and jazz-inflected beats, Building Bridges stays
true to its name by bridging the gap between established artists
and rising ones alike such as VVS Verbal, Shadow The Great of
Loaf Muzik, Napoleon Da Legend, Mar’rz Atomz, Stage One,
Louie Skaggs, Boone Bixby, Supreme The Eloheem (from the
Representativz) and Coke as well as production from Hellfire Beats
and Central Parks. DMC champion DJ Grazzhoppa contributes cuts
alongside Hashfinger and Hellfire. The cover art comes courtesy
of Joe Buck, the artist behind the De La Soul Is Dead cover art.
Building Bridges will be released via Bucktown USA, the multimedia
company General Steele created in 2004 alongside partner
Cynical Smith, with digital distribution through Duck Down, including
a limited-edition pressing of 500 records. #BuildingBridges

STL GLD – My Monday Morning Music
Thursday, September 4th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on STL GLD – My Monday Morning Music

Image: 1591432 ON LIMITED EDITION WHITE VINYL!
Two-time Boston Music Award winner Moe Pope and Duck Down producer The Arcitype, who has produced music for artists
such as Vinnie Paz and Ruste Juxx, have come together to release a new album of original, sample-free music entitled ‘My
Monday Morning Music.’
The Album takes the listener on a journey of beats, melodies and lyrics that range from cinematic styles, to harder, grittier
beats. Along with Moe Pope, the album features a wide array of well-known artists such as Dua (Bad Rabbits), Ruste Juxx,
Reks, Jake Merhmann and Chris Klaxton (Tan Vampires), Dutch Rebelle, Tea Leigh, Fran-P, and John Robinson.
Moe Pope is an acclaimed hip-hop artist, songwriter, and contemporary painter, and winner of the Boston Music Award for
Hip Hop Artist Of The Year two years running. His works (Including 2013’s critical smash Let The Right Ones In with producer
Rain) have received widespread praise from outlets such as The Boston Herald, Stuff Magazine, RadioBDC, The Boston
Phoenix, and iTunes Rewind. His style of hip-hop draws equally from the alternative traditions of A Tribe Called Quest, the
abstract prose of Bob Dylan, the adrenaline-soaked fervor of Bad Brains, and the eccentricities of Radiohead.
The Arcitype is a producer from New York, former lead guitarist for Blues/Funk group Tip Top Deluxe, transplanted to
Cambridge, MA, who has previously worked with Moe Pope as well as the likes of Scarface, Guilty Simpson, Ill Bill, Kool G.
Rap, and many more. He is an alumni of Emerson College, and a mainstay of the Boston hip-hop scene, as the proprietor
of AR Classic Records, and The Bridge Sound & Stage, one of the premier rap recording studios in Massachusetts.
The Arcitype himself has said of My Monday Morning Music that the album “…was birthed during the making and mixing of
Let The Right Ones In, and it’s a different type of sound for both Moe and Myself, a more standard (while more musical)
boom-bap direction than that of Moe Pope and Rain, whose sound was more derived from an indie rock inspiration.”

7even Thirty – The Problem
Thursday, August 14th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on 7even Thirty – The Problem

Image: 1590464 7evenThirty and Gensu Dean. Rapper and producer. Mello Music
Group stalwarts and Jackson, Mississippi natives turned Dallas denizens.
Their working together was fated, rooted in shared soil before it was written
in indelible ink. With 7evenThirty’s sophomore album, The Problem, the
duo have committed their destined collaboration to wax, giving rap listeners
an album that wrestles with the rapidly changing present and carves out a
much-deserved space in the forever-uncertain future.
Though 7evenThirty’s first solo effort, Heaven’s Computer, was
written as a semi-autobiographical sci-fi narrative, he’s landed squarely
on terra firma this time around. In fact, his previous interstellar retreat
inward has resulted in an incisive outward gaze at his home planet. The
city buildings might be crumbling, the bars and beats of other rappers and
producers homogenized, but there’s hope.
With his delivery sharper than ever, 7evenThirty is comfortable and
confident no matter where Dean’s snares and kicks hit. He moves in and out
of double time with deceptive ease. Furthermore, his styles are markedly
varied throughout, ranging from rigid and rapid fire (“Russian Revolver”)
to bouncy and playful (“Foot On the Ground”).
Still, 7evenThirty’s dexterity behind the mic doesn’t supersede his
thought provoking lyrics. Case in point, “Making of a Vigilante,” which
deftly outlines a scorned and vengeful woman’s haunting and convoluted
attempt to enact justice. 7evenThirty also tackles several other emotionally
and sociologically rich topics. The perils and paranoia associated with our
dependence on technology (“Off the Grid”), the problems facing the next
generation (“Generation Why”) — amidst the rubble, he leaves no stone
unturned.
Working solely with his preferred SP-1200, which only allows ten
seconds of sample time, Gensu Dean has once again managed to modernize
golden era aesthetics, crafting intricate and fluid beats through stringent
composition. Favoring sonic diversity over claustrophobic cohesion,
Dean’s banging suites are perfectly tailored to 7evenThirty’s wide-ranging
subject matter. Wherever 7evenThirty goes Dean sidles up next to him,
flipping lush soul (“Filthy Rich”), blues-rock (“The Problem”), Ukrainian
pop (“Foot on the Ground”), and more.
The sole feature comes from venerated New York MC Sean Price
on “Hook Heavy.” Over Gensu Dean’s menacing production, Price’s gruff
deadpan delivery proves the perfect counterpart for 7evenThirty’s energetic
and elastic wordplay.
With The Problem, 7evenThirty and Gensu Dean have cut all but the
essential. The twelve tracks are clear and concise in execution, totaling
slightly less than forty minutes. Not every question is answered, but the
most important are explored. Listen closely for the answers.”
