Tradisyon Ka – Gwo Ka: Music of Guadeloupe, West Indies
Friday, September 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tradisyon Ka – Gwo Ka: Music of Guadeloupe, West Indies

Image: 1591845 Soul Jazz Records continues its journey into the vast musical world of the Caribbean – digging deep into the cultural African roots of the region. Over the last 20 years Soul Jazz Records have been documenting and presenting the often hidden histories and deep musical worlds of Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Belize, Trinidad, the Bahamas and more.

This documentation encompasses reissuing lost recordings, such as the mighty Studio One catalogue of reggae, producing films/dvds (such as the 3-hour documentary Mirror To The Soul in conjunction with British Pathé, and Dub Echoes), books (check the forthcoming photography book on the Caribbean 90 Degrees of Shade, with text by Paul Gilroy, and Kanaval) as well as travelling to the region to produce new recordings.

TradisyonKa’s GwoKa album is newly recorded in Pointe-A-Pitre, Guadeloupe by Soul Jazz Records. Like the cult music of Haiti’s Vodou and Cuba’s Santeria or the roots music of Belize’s Garifuna (all of which Soul Jazz have travelled to record), GwoKa is the musical and cultural product of the region’s African ancestry, forcibly brought to the Caribbean through slavery.

GwoKa exists only in Guadeloupe. Guadeloupe is a very different island from much of the Caribbean, in that it remains a ‘department’ of its original colonial master, France. Here, the currency is the Euro and the baker sells croissants and café au lait. This constant ‘European-ising’ of the island means that GwoKa plays a fundamental and important role in the defining of Guadeloupean identity. As an African-derived music, its position as a counter-balance to French influence means that the definition of how and what GwoKa represents is also in a constant state of flux.

In contrast to this ever-changing state of political and cultural definition, the music itself has no problems of identity. Drawing on hundreds of years of musical and cultural strength, the music of GwoKa remains both steeped in tradition and, at the same time, progressive and forward-looking. New melodies and compositions (all the songs featured here are new compositions) are performed over a long-established group of unique rhythm patterns played by master drummers (including playing with their feet!). In this African-derived song structure of call and response, the vocalist styles also draw from the equally powerful history of the French chanson singers to create a truly unique combination.

TradisyonKa, made up of some of the island’s finest singers and master drummers, is part of a powerful network of politicisedGwoKa groups on the island – upholding the traditions and cultural importance of GwoKa as part of a larger process of defining the identity of Guadeloupe and Guadeloupe culture. Today it is well known that Austrian pianist and composer Friedrich Gulda was at home in two different worlds: classical music and jazz. He once mentioned “There are so many great musicians alive, but none of them was able to tear down the border that was created by the music industry, which is the border […]

Savages Y Seufo – Remix EP

Image: 1586988 Agogo return with another solid remix set from Savages y Suefo debut “Worldstyle”

Savages y Suefo’s debut “Worldstyle” came out in early 2013. The eclectic
album melts downtempo, dub, hip-hop, world music and electro-swing tunes.
they are continuing the story with some nice remixes in also very different
styles. The French trip-hop guru Kid Loco made an radio friendly version from
the raw original of “Or Ve Hoshech” – a tune sung in old-hebrew language.
Savages y Suefo’s longtime friend [dunkelbunt] brought new flavor to
“Ballroom Breakers” with wobbling basslines and German vocals from MC
Alix. Fab Samperi worked on the same tune, and his deep-swing-bossa idea
fits perfect to the original vibe. Datax, one half of the Balkan Vision group
made a perfect party drum’n’bass track from “Our World Our Style”. M.W.D.
did a groovy latin-house from “Baby Gone” while Jan Pyroman produced an
atmospheric tune from “Tequila Man”.
The vinyl version contains one and a half minutes of extra scratch tools on
both sides, while the digital version brings more quality remixes and
instrumentals from MustBeat Crew, Hanzee, Kid Loco and [dunkelbunt]. In
total we can say that this EP works well in different sets wheter it’s played on a
party, in a bar or in the radio.

Tracklisting:
A1 – Ballroom Breakers (Dunkelbunt
feat. Alix Remix) 03:44
A2 – Our World Our Style (Datax
