Jay Dee (J Dilla) – Jay Deelicious – The Delicious Vinyl Years
Thursday, November 17th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Jay Dee (J Dilla) – Jay Deelicious – The Delicious Vinyl Years

Image: 1607464 Jay Dee, aka J Dilla, emerged as a Hip Hop producer to be
reckoned with in 1995 when his name was attached to the
first single from The Pharcyde’s eagerly anticipated
sophomore album “Labcabincalifornia”. Hit play on his first
Pharcyde production “Runnin” and you have the launch
point of a producer’s career that mesmerized, titillated and
expanded the domes of Hip Hop fans for the next decade.
“Jay Deelicious: Originals, Remixes & Rarities” documents
Jay Dilla’s early production on Delicious Vinyl.

Working closely with The Pharcyde and Michael “Mike Floss” Ross, (Delicious Vinyl’s founder), Jay Dee
was instrumental in keeping The Pharcyde’s second album as ear poppin’ and bugged as their maiden
classic “Bizarre Ride To The Pharcyde”, stepping up big time after the group parted ways with “Bizarre”
producer J-Swift. In addition to original productions and remixes for “Labcabin”, Jay Dee skillfully
worked with the label on incredible mixes for the Brand New Heavies, as well as unreleased remixes for
former BNH singer, N’Dea Davenport. From the jazzed out Rhodes syncopation of “Sometimes”
featuring Q-Tip, to the crazy cutting up of “Got To Give It Up” for “Saturday Night” featuring Mos Def,
Jay Dee shows there’s no tempo he can’t freak on some otherworldly jazzed up funk tip. So put on your
head phones and take a trip into the early work of a Hip Hop master

Illa J – Yancey Boys (2LP)

John “Illa J” Yancey, younger brother of late, great genius producer James Yancey (aka Jay Dee, J Dilla), is currently completing his debut album for Delicious Vinyl. With the multi-talented Illa J rhyming and singing over a treasure trove of previously untouched Jay Dee gems, the project represents both a full-circle collaboration and a whole new beginning in the story of the musically exceptional Yancey brothers.

When Jay Dee passed away from complications relating to lupus in February 2006, he left behind an extraordinary legacy of production work, including hits for Common, Janet Jackson, and Busta Rhymes. One mother lode of previously untouched beats dates from his time working on the Pharcyde’s sophomore album “Labcabincalifornia” (1995). As DV owner and founder Michael Ross explains, “From ‘95 through ‘98 Jay Dee was my go-to guy for hot beats and remixes. He was always making beats, always. So there was a select amount of tracks that he composed for me during that time, tracks as good as anything he’d done, only they never got used. When I finally met Illa J last year, I gave him a CD containing those unreleased beats.” It was a case of pure serendipity, since 21-year-old Illa J had just relocated to Los Angeles and constructed a studio built around Jay Dee’s own recording equipment, dubbing it Yancey Boy Studios in tribute to their fraternal bond. “Dilla was twelve years older than me,” Illa J says. “So back in the day in Detroit I was just a little kid, sitting on the stairs in our house, watching him make those first beats for Slum Village. So I always
felt my brother’s tracks and had an instinct for what I wanted to do over them.”

When Illa J set to work in early 2008 on recording the album, the project flowed quickly as he entered the proverbial can’t-miss zone. As Illa J says, “One of the things I learned from my brother is that you don’t get that much time, so make the most of it. That’s why I’ve decided to dedicate my life to doing what I love: music. To work with Delicious, the label that released those hits my brother made with The Pharcyde (“Runnin’” and “Drop”) is really special.” Michael Ross says, “Illa J can write, sing, play instruments and rap. Not just a little bit of each, he’s really the complete package! And anyone who loves Jay Dee’s music is going to flip out when they hear what Illa J’s been laying down. For over a decade these beats have been waiting in the vault for this moment. It’s like Jay Dee made these tracks with an extrasensory purpose, so that Illa J could make this album. There is no question that this is exactly what they were meant for. These beats belong to Illa J, they’re his birthright, and I really believe Jay Dee would be proud of what his brother is doing.” Available from 15.12.2017

Illa J – Home (LP+MP3)

Image: 1610081 Illa J takes us on a trip to his hometown Detroit with his third solo album HOME

following his self titled LP, Illa J sometimes known as “John Regal” (born October 13,1986 in Detroit, Michigan) is a singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, multi instrumentalist. He takes us on a trip to his hometown Detroit with his third solo album HOME. His last LP successfully took Illa J out of his brother and hiphop legend J Dilla‘s shadow to show he is in his own lane. Yet, Yancey still felt as though he was in a box labeled rapper. Teaming up with producer Calvin Valentine, who entirely produced the album, HOME is Illa J‘s first album to properly showcase the full extent of his vocal range to put him in the singer-songwriter conversation. The listener can feel the soulfulness of this LP through Illa J‘s singing and Valentines‘ smooth production.

On „Sam Cook“ which is an ode to Illa J‘s father who ghostwrote for Motown, Yancey dives into his falsetto that is reminiscent of D‘Angelo, Bilal and Al Green. While keeping his focus on singing. Illa J sprinkles the album with rap verses. On „7Mile“ his vocals smoothly float over the more raw/alternative cut laid by Valentine. The album title track „Home“ completes his album and solidifies Illa J‘s artistry as a well rounded singer who can rap.

Illa J is a solo artists, former member of legendary group Slum Village. Active in the music industry since 2006 in L.A and Detroit, Illa J has released two solo albums, 2008’s Yancey Boys via Delicious Vinyl and 2015’s self titled LP Illa J via Bastard Jazz Records. In 2014, while refocusing on his solo career and stepping out of Slum Village, Illa J relocated to Montreal for a fresh new start. He has since entrenched himself in the Canadian music scene by collaborating with some of Canada’s finest emcees and producers including Moka Only, Potatohead People and Kaytranada.

His recent collaborations have been with jazz legend, Robert Glasper in concert and on record for his Miles Davis tribute project Everything’s Beautiful. Illa J also had the privilege to collaborate with hip hop legend Phife Dawg from ATCQ on his double LP nutshell. Other features include Slum Village’s critically acclaimed album YES & famed UK producer Tom Misch Beat Tape 2. Available from 30.06.2017

Image: 1587934 Delicious Vinyl now proudly presents one of those Chris Goss productions that should make
you feel like you did the first time you heard one of your all time favorite. Slo Burn’s 1996
Amusing The Amazing is now available on 10 inch vinyl (as it was originally presented). If the
project is reminiscent of Kyuss that would have everything to do with John Garcia’s vocals
throughout this 4 track outing. Or just maybe it’s the fact that Goss was behind the boards for
most of Kyuss’ legendary releases.

Whether it’s as the driving force behind Masters of Reality, his contributions to Queens of the
Stone Age or as the ‘inventor’ of desert rock, Chris Goss has made an undeniable mark on the
world of rock. With Amusing The Amazing yet another chapter in Goss’ rich rock and roll story
is again available to the welcoming ears of fans around the world.

”I can’t make any claim at all to inventing desert rock, or stoner rock, or whatever
you want to call it. I make rock n’ roll records, and hopefully try to make the listener
feel like I did when I heard my favorite music.”

J Dilla – Sunset BLVD. Instrumentals
Thursday, December 5th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on J Dilla – Sunset BLVD. Instrumentals

Image: 1585300 Delicious Vinyl proudly releases Sunset Blvd, the new album from Yancey Boys, the
group piloted by John “Illa J” Yancey and Frank Nitt. The dynamic new collection is built
around previously unheard tracks created by Illa J’s brother: the late, great J Dilla
(James Yancey). That fact makes it paramount that fans have access to the full
instrumentals from the whole project in everyone’s favorite format, vinyl.
The road to Sunset Blvd has been paved with hard work and sweet inspiration. In 2008,
Illa J began making music under the Yancey Boys banner, with the guidance of Delicious
Vinyl Co-Founder Michael Ross and utilizing beats his elder brother left behind. Ross
explains: “Putting together the first Yancey Boys album was a unique opportunity to keep
it all in the family by giving young Illa J a jump off with unreleased beats of his late great
brother. In addition, the record was a unique way to satiate Dilla’s rabid fan base with a
batch of undiscovered gems.”
“We’ve created an album that would make Dilla proud,” says Frank Nitt, who grew up with
Dilla in Detroit. “But this isn’t a nostalgia trip: Dilla’s beats were so future-forward that
they’re right on time in 2013.” And in 2013 that makes a vinyl offering of these beats a
necessity. Sunset Blvd. Instrumentals contains full instrumental versions of the entire
album, an album created specifically around these legacy beats.

First a fat guy from Fishponds who made a living by selling mobile phones, came right out of nowhere and entered the global charts. Madonna became 50, but she’s still doing […]

Blind Prophet – Formation
Saturday, March 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Blind Prophet – Formation

Image: 1602899 Long Island NY’s Blind Prophet (Joe Burns), is the owner and operator of vinyl & digital imprint South Fork Sound. His productions have received support from Dusk & Blackdown, Distance, Mary Anne Hobbs, J:Kenzo, BunZer0, Wen, J. Robinson and many more. We are happy to present Blind Prophet’s first vinyl release.

“Formation” is a masterful 130 bpm stormer built from beautifully dubbed congas, deep subs, a propulsive and distorted 4/4 kick, and paranoid descending piano figure intertwining with a miasmic lead. Brimming with deliciously filtered and panned synths, insistent pads build tension to a drop into pure soundboy-killing freefall. The second half cuts the kick to half-time to open up more swaggering dub space, fleshing out a truly massive tune. “This one straight to a soundbwoy chest!”

“Horizon” is a hypnotic 140 bpm meditation driven again by conga, ricocheting percussion, and a steppers bassline, with gorgeous pads and keys rising from the ether like a dawn sun through evaporating mists. “Yes Jah” is the refrain, centering the tune firmly in the spiritual realm, aligning body and mind with the unseen. For late night and early morning sound system sessions, honoring creation and creation’s source through bassweight and rhythm. Available from 01.04.2016

Ahnnu – World Music / Perception
Friday, October 2nd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ahnnu – World Music / Perception

Image: 1600095 For his first ever offering on vinyl, Leaving Records presents “World
Music / Perception” in a stunning gatefold double LP package. World
Music introduces a series of themes which represent various styles
and likenesses adopted in Ahnnu’s growth as a sound artist living
in the digital age. In respect to environment, Ahnnu creates a body
of sound-work that is transient in nature. Each track is arranged as
separate entities and are holistic in the sense that they are intended
to inspire an experience of indifference within a space of perpetual
sonic motion. “World Music” describes the continuous sensory shift
of both meditative neglect and cognitive sophistication when active
within a (digitally) connected culture.
Perception finds Ahnnu tampering with volume, pitch, and rhythm in
the midst of the shivering hum that drives the album forward while
camouflaging its detail. The album moves at an almost unnoticeable
pace, but it’s filled with delicious rhythms, like the scrambled
marching drum of “Scaling,” the flickering pulse of “Intercept,” and the
dust-flecked loops on “Elastic.” These percussive tracks carve a form
for the ambient subtleties that seem to have the most impact due to
their length and timbre. This is wonderfully refined on “The Racer”
or even “Anneal,” with its transitory exhalations and crumpled echo.

Kenny Cox – Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise
Thursday, May 23rd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kenny Cox – Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise

Image: 1580902 Black vinyl repress! LorIn 1974, Strata Records Inc. was well known in Detroit for their art gallery, live music venue and record label, turning out records by artists like Kenny Cox and Lyman Woodard. In 2012, nearly 4 decades later, Scion commissioned DJ Amir Abdullah to research and create an exhibit based on lost youth culture in Detroit for a new online museum. Familiar with the history of Strata Inc., Amir decided the best way to define the era was through the lens of the labels brief but potent influence on the city’s culture. Inspired by this project, Amir set out to re-introduce the world to Strata Inc. through his own label, 180 Proof Records.
The Lyman Woodard Organization’s Saturday Night Special (1975) is perhaps the jewel of the label, but the LP that was to follow – Cox’s unreleased Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise, is at the same time radical and sublime. It’s a visionary work, inspired by both the innocence and zeal of his 3-year-old son, Philip, and also the culture of Latin America and Caribbean lands Cox admits in the album’s original liner notes that, “oddly enough…I’ve never seen.”
The title track, “Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise” is a frolicking bossa groove awash in the gentle sound of waves one can imagine lapping against the shores of Brazil’s Praia da Fazenda, or perhaps the Taipus de Fora. “Samba de Romance” teems with the mischievous tones of two lovers playing not cat and mouse, but cat and cat (!), until the chase ends in a passionate nighttime rendezvous in sultry island air.
The pulsating bounce of “Island Song,” with its mood set by Moore’s vibrant flugelhorn and the percussion of Ronald Johnson and Nengue Hernandez, is just about everything one would imagine an island song to be, while “Lost My Love” is really “Feel Like Making Love” in delicious disguise and the album’s close, “Beyond The Dream,” is a 13-minute enlivening, reflective odyssey on everything one has lived, and all that remains to be achieved.
This previously unreleased masterpiece by Kenny Cox has been remastered from the original reel to reel masters, along with the artwork, which has been restored and printed ontop Heavy Stock Tip On Gatefold Jackets. Includes extensive liner notes and never seen before photos.

Nail – Donks EP
Friday, May 17th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Nail – Donks EP

Image: 1581425 New Sheffield label Shabby Doll Records makes its debut with Nail’s ‘Donks’ EP We love music for what it does to our minds and bodies don’t we? It’s the music that matters, not the number of units shifted.

Except… occasionally a figure comes along that does raise an eyebrow. For instance, when London’s Fear of Flying released the ‘Ode Rammel’ EP by Nail back in February, they sold out their vinyl pressing in a week. Not downloads or tracks streamed, but actual treacle-black vinyl.

Nail is Nottingham-based Neil Tolliday, a producer who spent the last decade creating deep downtempo joy as one half of Bent – their debut album ‘Programmed to Love’ helped ease the world’s ills back in 2000. However, ‘Ode Rammel’ is a flashback to pre-Bent days, bringing together four of Nail’s much sought-after mid-nineties house tracks, originally released on the legendary DIY Discs imprint. It’s music firmly in the tradition of the celebrated Nottingham party scene in which Nail made his first moves.

Now, with love for Nail’s solo manoeuvres truly reignited, Sheffield’s Shabby Doll label is taking the next step with his first new solo material for years. Called ‘Donks’, Nail’s new four-track EP showcases his flawless dancefloor instincts:

A1. PersonalEdit – It’s early evening and the lights have yet to be dimmed. There are faces you know, people you love and smiles everywhere you look.
A2. Feet Boutique – pounding and percussive & darkens the room and deepens the mood.
B1. Hey Baby – There’s something deliciously seductive about this early hours charmer. One to play when things are getting wonderfully weird…
B2. Never4gEdit – brings back the sunshine with some sweet, melody-flecked disco.

With Nail’s vintage house output currently proving to have real staying power, lovers of real British house music eagerly await his new tracks. So if you’ve got a dark room and a feeling, let Nail, Shabby Doll and ‘Donks’ add a little magic to the night. Available from 14.06.2013

There are a number of theories as to how, in the mid-20th century, African music made its way to Colombia’s vibrant port city of Barranquilla, today’s mecca of Caribbean tropical music flled with the chaos of loud music, frenetic taxis, delicious Sancocho soup aromas and a charminglycolourful aura. Some maintain that a man named “Boquebaba” […]
