Long Island rapper/producer/ex-Flipmode Squad member Roc Marciano is dropping his sophomore full-length on Decon. The long-awaited 15-track album is an ice-cold slice of New York rap grittiness from a dead-eyed master of the craft. Reloaded is largely self-produced and thematically airtight. The album showcases Roc in his prime, not so much flexing as effortlessly dismissing […]

Insight & Damu The Fudgemunk (Y Society) – Travel At Your Own Pace (BF RSD)
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Insight & Damu The Fudgemunk (Y Society) – Travel At Your Own Pace (BF RSD)

Image: 1615578 In 2006 Insight the Truncator (Boston) and Damu the Fudgemunk
(Washington DC), started recording their debut album under the moniker
Y Society. Entitled, Travel at Your Own Pace (TAYOP) the album was frst
released in October 2007. In hindsight, the year would be one of the
last years where albums were designed for long term digestion, and a
handful of releases from the era survived as undisputed classics to the
masses. Today, conceptual albums are almost archaic in a genre built
upon storytelling and themes.
With TAYOP, Insight and Damu put the message in the music. The album
title served the two as a roadmap to completion of its 13 songs and in
return, the fnished product serves as a navigation aid to the listener
maneuvering through life within themselves and absorbing the outside
world. From adventures of fscal responsibility and imaginative tales of
time travel to deconstructing one’s obstructions and beyond, Insight’s
rhymes confdently steer the listener on whatever path they have chosen
for themselves. The goal of the album is to empower. From start to fnish,
the array of uplifting lyrics is somewhat like modern day proverbs, but
not proverbial.
Musically, Damu the Fudgemunk pulls from a deep body of in?uences,
that give it its unique identity and charm while paying homage to the
foundations of their predecessors. The Legendary Marley Marl cosigned
the album as a “refreshing” effort of the times. For a project of such
character, the general reception does not re?ect the magnitude of
acclaim by it’s cult following. Receiving mixed reviews in a foggy time
in the industry, Travel at Your Own Pace still managed to sell out of it’s
original production. However, it has been long out of print for a decade.
In response, original vinyl pressings have fetched several hundreds of
dollars per copy in the used online markets of Discogs and eBay. The
progressing careers of both Insight and Damu in addition to their label,
Redefnition Records (also celebrating 10 years) prove that in a murky
2007, they all knew where they were traveling and how to arrive. Even
with their growth, a Travel at Your Own Pace repress has remained an
inevitable inquiry and recurring expectation to loyal supporters. The
answer is here and the wait is fnally over.

NEP – Decadence
Friday, October 13th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on NEP – Decadence

Image: 1615738 NEP was a loose multimedia collective formed in 1982 Zagreb, ex-Yugoslavia. The founder Dejan Krsic collaborated with various artists in a quest of re-thinking the stale concepts of art history, position of the author and the barriers between pop and elitist high culture. Heavily influenced by Walter Benjamin and Andy Warhol in theory and Brian Eno and Kraftwerk in music, Krsic created NEP as an umbrella term (meaning Nova Evropa) of diverse rule-breaking activities, covering graphic design, music, photography, video, news-media and theoretical work. Musically NEP focused on experiments in ambient and tape-music, mostly self-released or hard to find compilations like “The Cassette Played Poptones” (1988). Deeply immersed in pop-culture, politics and art theory Krsic’s search for perfect pop music with cutting critical edge peaked in 1989, the year Decadance track was conceived in studio, but has never been published. Pumping Roland 808 beats, with sampled vocals from Linda Cooper asking herself “How do I dance to this music” were chosen by Fox & His Friends label owners Leri Ahel and Zeljko Luketic for a 12″ opener of the unknown NEP’s pop history. This single is a sneak-peak into the world of POP NOT POP, the album and a graphic book merged into one multimedia entity, to be released later this year. All material is restored and mastered from original reel-to-reel tapes and presented on wax for the first time and for this occasion, deconstructed and reinvented in a remix B-side by Snuffo, masked hero of the Snuff Crew fame. Snuffo splitted the title vocal into a new cut-up, now telling “Dance to this music” to its audiences. And indeed, NEP’s Decadance is meant to be danced to, either side you choose to play. NEP on this 1989 track was led by Dejan Krsic, now famous graphic designer and art historian in Croatia, but other collaborators include Laibach and Borghesia photographer Jane Stravs, artist and TV director Gordana Brzovic, Jovan Culibrk, now Bishop at The Serbian Orthodox Church and Anja Rupel, singer of cult Yugoslavian synth-pop group Videosex. Various – Venezuela 70
Wednesday, May 25th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Venezuela 70

Image: 1604285 Soul Jazz Records’ new Venezuela 70 is the first-ever album of its kind to take a look at the groundbreaking experimental rock music made in Venezuela and created in the 1970s – during a time when the country was both a modern cultural and economic powerhouse in Latin America on account of wealth from its vast oil supplies. Venezuela lies at the northern part of South America, with neighbouring Colombia to its west and Brazil to its south. The north coast borders the Caribbean.

Whilst much of 1960s Venezuelan rock music emulated British and USA styles, the 1970s saw the evolution of a new generation of creative artists such as Vytas Brenner, Angel Rada, Pablo Schneider and Miguel Angel Fuster, who all explored the possibilities of mixing together rock with elements of electronica, funk, jazz, latin rhythms simultaneously exploring their links with Venezuelan roots music, creating a new sound which blended a multitude of new and old world influences, uniquely Venezuelan.

These Venezuelan artists looked to the future while exploring their country’s own musical heritage to create a new cultural identity. Similarities can be drawn with then contemporary movements around the world such as the Trópicalia and post-Trópicalia 1970s scene in Brazil of OsMutantes, NovosBaianos, Secos e Molhados (all of which feature on Soul Jazz Records’ earlier Brazil 70).

A similar parallel can be made in Europe with the experimental German groups of the 1970s (Can, AmonDuul, Harmonia, Neu all featured on Soul Jazz Records’ Deutsche ElektronischeMusik) who deconstructed and reconstructed the links between rock music and electronics to define a new German cultural identity.

Most of these artists featured on Venezuela 70 remain practically unknown outside of Venezuela’s borders and yet their progressive forward-thinking music is some of the most sophisticated in the world – a stunning ‘melting pot’ mix of underground rock, synthetic electronics, funk, jazz and Latin American rhythms all of which explored new sounds and broke down musical boundaries to create a distinct and unique Venezuelan music and cultural identity.

Kylie Minogue – Kylie Minogue
Friday, January 1st, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kylie Minogue – Kylie Minogue

Image: 1601134 Originally released in 1994, Kylie Minogue represents the fun 90s pop acts had in absorbing an increasingly diverse range of influences – from house and ambient to Balearic and R&B. Beloved by perfect pop fans, this is Kylie’s most sought-after record, finding a decent copy on vinyl will set you back well over £150.

Signposting another left turn in Be With’s ‘baffling roster’ (Pitchfork), we proudly present this album’s first ever vinyl reissue as a deluxe special edition, limited to just 500 copies. Righting the wrongs of its initial release, the album now stretches out over two pieces of 180gram vinyl and is presented in a sumptuous gatefold jacket, allowing the iconic Rankin portraits of an empowered, self-aware pop star room to breathe.

After phenomenal chart success in the late 80s and early 90s with the PWL hit factory, Kylie desired greater artistic freedom and critical credibility. Her move to dance music label deConstruction, and its commendable hands-off attitude, marked this profound shift In thinking and enabled the singer to make the album she really wanted. Indeed, Kylie Minogue is a sophisticated collection of stylish songs that elegantly reference new jack swing, R&B ballads, ambient pop and piano house.

String-drenched epic “Confide In Me” (produced by acclaimed dance duo Brothers in Rhythm) confidently sets the tone whilst “Surrender”, a seductive sunset slow jam, unwittingly anticipates the voguish Balearic pop of the past decade. Jazzy pop-R&B groovers keep things moving but it’s the masterful “Put Yourself In My Place” – in all its understated melancholy – that stops listeners in their tracks. Widely regarded as her finest downtempo moment, the monster single recalled late 80s American R&B but, having never received a proper vinyl release, its inclusion here is worth the price of admission alone.

Further orchestral ballads, subtly cinematic pieces and minor key house tracks (with the involvement of the Pet Shop Boys and acid house stalwarts Farley & Heller) serve to complete an assured collage of accessible yet resolutely eclectic ‘perfect pop’.

Over 20 years on, Kylie Minogue remains quietly revered and relevant today. Just check fellow Aussies Tame Impala’s recent cover of pop juggernaut ‘Confide In Me’.

Image: 1593306 Ticklah arrives with his first official maxi-single for Names You Can Trust, featuring his long-anticipated reinterpretation of Willie Colón & Hector Lavoe’s Nuyorican classic El Dia De Suerte. With countless musical endeavors under his belt, plus founding duties in the Dap-Kings, Antibalas and the Easy Star All-Stars, Ticklah, aka Victor Axelrod, remains a serious force in the studio as exhibited in his methodical deconstruction of these seminal New York City Latin anthems. Reworked entirely from the ground up with a precise and soulful approach to foundation reggae roots and dub, Ticklah’s extended take on El Dia De Suerte stretches out into new territory, yet remains faithful to the original’s timeless message via Mayra Vega’s stunning vocals. Rounding out the package are Ticklah’s renditions of Eddie Palmieri’s Mi Sonsito and Si Hecho Palante from his 2007 album on Easy Star, already deemed dancefloor essentials by soulful DJs worldwide, remastered and now available on vinyl for the first time. It’s arrived!

Daniel Grau – Reworks Vol.2 (by Box Aus Holz)
Friday, September 26th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Daniel Grau – Reworks Vol.2 (by Box Aus Holz)

Image: 1591770 Sonar Kollektiv present Volume 2 of the Daniel Grau reworks this time by Box Aus Holz.

After Daniel Wang and Jules Etienne set the bar very high with their remixes for
„Robot Magico“ and „Disco Fantasy“ by Daniel Grau (SK280), it’s now time for the
next three songs by the forgotten Venezuelan Cosmic Disco producer to come under
the knife. With his debut „Rivers Of The Red Planet“ (just out on Tartelet Records)
21-year-old Berlin based Max Graef is making massive waves right now across all
borders. Still he found a slot in his busy schedule to enhance three songs out of
Daniel Grau’s elusive archive – together with befriended DJs/producers from the Oye
Records entourage. Upgrading all of them in a state-of-the-art cutting-edge fashion.
That’s how „Tren Del Espacio“ (originally released on the 1978 album „El Sonido
Magico De Daniel Grau“) suddenly becomes a straight forward slamming house track
with added Caribbean spice mid-in. A completely different approach is applied by
Graef and Labuzinski on the remix for „Nunca Conocí Amor Igual“ (of the
album „440 Toker“ from 1982). The vocals by Laurye McGregor are stifled by a
menacing dubsteppy killer beat and only slosh to daylight occasionally. An impressive
and aweinspiring deconstruction maybe also Madlib or The Alchemist would come up
with if stuffed with enough medication. Make sure you serve this cold!
And then there’s the collaboration of Graef with Oye Records honcho Markus Lindner
aka Delfonic. Also with this remix of „Delirio En Fa Menor“ (off the 1976 LP „Mas
Alla De Las Estrellas“) you can literally feel the affinity towards what we used to call
leftfield hiphop. A badass beat framework binds the ever collapsing samples of the
original. It’s like Graef and Delfonic hold a picture of the original tune in their hands
and then tearing it in half, just to piece it back together again back-to-front. This is
adulteration by permission. Or to put it in another way: This is how you get away with
murder. Another milestone in Max Graef’s still juvenile career!

The Group – The Feed-Back (Deluxe Edition LP+CD)
Friday, July 4th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Group – The Feed-Back (Deluxe Edition LP+CD)

Image: 1589728 Among the manifold musical innovations occured in recent years, one of the trends both in Europe and in USA is to set up ensemble devoted to improvisation. These bands show similarities in their rich expressions, but could nonetheless be pigeonholed in two great families: one directly coming from the Jazz tradition and one of a more intellectual kind, connected with contemporary Classical music. These trends had been deeply analysed by «The Feed-Back» whose bold approach to music, more linked with current tendencies, placed them at the forefront of the Beat scene.

The name of the ensemble, «The Feed-Back», is noteworthy: a word coming from the cutting edge science of cybernetics communicates to the public the idea of a contemporary reality, almost physical in its essence. A feed-back is a device that enables an effect to counteract on its causes, achieving this way a given goal, as our body does when it regulates automatically our actions according to their ends.

This mechanism underlies the improvisation – a special circuit whose action adjusts and fine-tunes the energy of each single musician in relation to the others. The mechanism of feed-back transcends the inner dynamics of improvisation and aims to extend its action to the listeners, enabling another feed-back circuit, now between the band and the public.

This purpose is sought hrough unusual and disrupting stimulations such as the loss of traditional melodic lines, the introduction of noise in the musical discourse and a deconstructive approach which reduces vocals to the essence leaving only a few basic rhythmic elements as a blueprint that still characterises this music as Beat. Within this avantgarde context the band feels at ease thanks to its innovating spirit and is projected in a fertile future.

For now they invite us to listen to evocative titles like “The Feed-Back”, “Kumâlo” and “Quasars” – aptly chosen for a public ready to discover them, a public capable to understand how this band overcame current musical structures like Psychedelic music or Underground’s timorous attempts with a sound closer to our times that we could name «Upperground». – FRANCO EVANGELISTI

” Somewhere in between psych-rock, avant-garde jazz and funky jams. The sound is definitely experimental and ostentatiously “underground”. The music, anyway, is thrilling. The drum patterns, in particular, are extraordinary: regular, tight, groovy, and incredibly close to the “motorik” beat of Can and Neu!. “The Group” was not a band of young beatniks. As a matter of fact, it’s just a pseudonym for Gruppo D’Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, a side project of well known soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone along with other experimental musicians. The rock-focused attitude of the record is quite surprising for such a team of classically-trained men already in their forties! – Taken from the blog “Il Golpe e L’Uva”

Raised on classic reggae and soul, The Lions have carved out a distinct style that has earned them praise from reggae enthusiasts around the world. Bombay Monkey – Dark Flow
Friday, June 6th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Bombay Monkey – Dark Flow

Image: 1588402 The theory of ‘Dark Flow’ suggests some structure beyond our visible universe – hinting at
myriad other worlds outside our limited “horizon”. It’s a controversial idea that fascinates
Bombay Monkey, a band who like to create their own musical multiverse.
Their new album ‘Dark Flow’ is a heady mixture of disparate styles: electronic dub meets
Eighties synth pop with a slice of Exotica, wrapped in a cinematic production that’s infused
with quirky humour and a deceptive pop sensibility.
Founder members Guy Martin and Andy Organ started working together in 2003 but this is
their first release since 2008’s journey into cosmic dub ‘130 Astronauts’ which featured cuts
from the legendary scratchmaster Mr Thing (an original ‘Scratch Pervert’).
Initially Bombay Monkey played largely instrumental music comprised of cut-ups and samples,
and toured a stunning audio-visual set, supporting Hexstatic and playing at several festivals
around the UK. They then upped the ante as their music developed into heavier, faster and
dancier tracks with vocals., when Andy began singing on the new recordings.
Dave Tonkinsmith joined the duo in 2012 and now both he and Andy share vocal duties – one
takes lead and the other sings back up, depending on whose voice best suits the music. The
pair chime perfectly throughout ‘Dark Flow’, with melodies that will go “whizzing round your
head like the hadron collider.”
The supercharged drum’n’bass of ‘Monkey See Monkey Do’ recalls the similarly simianobsessed
German technocrats Modeselektor while the slow, moody ‘King of the Jungle’ bears
a marked dubstep influence. There’s more obvious leanings towards pop too, from the playful
humour of ‘It’s Not My Dog’ to the sun-kissed ‘Istanbul Dub’, a gleeful deconstruction of the
1953 Jimmy Kennedy / Nat Simon swing classic.

Various – Taang! Rec. – The First 10 Singles (RSD)
Saturday, May 10th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Taang! Rec. – The First 10 Singles (RSD)

Image: 1588209 Hand-picked and lovingly curated and annotated by label founder Curtis Casella, Taang! Records: The First 10 Singles consists of ten 7-inch records, a 24-song CD, and a 24-page liner notes book, all housed in a deluxe outer case. It tells the stories of the artists who built one of the most impressive music catalogs in all of American punk and hardcore. Each 7-inch is housed in a full recreation of its original sleeve, and all musical selections are also found on a CD included in the set.
From snot-nosed Gang Green anthems like “Alcohol” and “Terrorize” to the Lemonheads’ melodic, proto-alternative “Glad I Don’t Know” and Slapshot’s instant moshpit creator “Same Mistake,” these 10 groundbreaking singles are what made Taang! an undeniable force to be reckoned with. Taang! Records [an acronym standing for “Teen Agers Are No Good!”] was formed in 1984, as an outgrowth of and support system for the explosive Boston punk and hardcore scene that produced SS Decontrol [SSD], DYS, Jerry’s Kids, the F.U.s and so many more. Like its counterpart in Los Angeles, SST Records, each new Taang! platter unleashed a sonic fury and inventiveness that made the ‘80s one of the most unique musical decades of the 20th Century. As Casella says in the set’s liner notes: “There was no real record label [for punk music] in Boston at the time. At least none that I felt were representing Boston properly. That’s where I stepped in.”

Oddisee – Tangible Dream
Thursday, February 13th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Oddisee – Tangible Dream

Image: 1586275 I live in a gentrified part of Brooklyn, I eat out several times a week, I travel the world sampling the best that cities across the globe have to offer. Do I live in a penthouse loft? Am I dinning in five stars restaurants? Can you only find me in the most exclusive areas? Do I own a jet? The answer to all the above is most certainly no. I’m just a regular man from Prince George’s county, Maryland that figured shit out.
I discovered that I can make a career in an arena dominated by artists that sell false dreams. I realized that although the masses may not know of my body of work, it doesn’t take the whole world to have the world I want. Tangible Dream is a mix-tape dedicated to the deconstruction of our traditional ideas of success & shedding light on the possibility of a sustainable rap life.
These rhymes were written in economy class seats, these beats were produced on long bus trips & these songs were recorded in airbnb apartments. All I want to do is make music for a living so that I can live to make music. The only dreams I’m interested in are the ones I can grasp. It just so happens that anything you want bad enough can be obtained. Perhaps the world may never know of my accomplishments but accomplishments they are nonetheless.

Osborne – Hold Up
Friday, August 16th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Osborne – Hold Up

Image: 1582295 If you thought the English-accented voice singing the hook on Ann Arbor/Detroit producer Todd Osborn’s new single “Hold Up” sounded familiar, you’d be right — it’s Joe Goddard of UK globeconquerors Hot Chip. The match might seem counter-intuitive — Hot Chip are best-known for reinventing rave sounds for a new generation, while “Hold Up” is all about the warmth of classic house — but it works a treat, with Goddard’s surprisingly soulful delivery slotting seamlessly into the mix. “Hold Up” is the first that the world has heard from Osborn since 2009’s “Hovercrafting EP” and 2008’s self-titled debut. It comes backed with a remix from Goddard that’s entitled, appropriately enough, “Joe’s Dub” — as the title suggests, it furnishes the original with suitably spacious reverb sounds and atmosphere, although it’s more a case of a subtle reworking rather than a full-scale dubplate deconstruction. There’s also another new track on the b-side: “All Night,” which also sounds exactly like its name. It’s a track that’s made to soundtrack dancing all night, based around the sound of an insistent 4/4 kick and a decidedly groovy walking triplet bassline. The remix by Tuff City Kids, the duo consisting of Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer, adds atmospheric synth stabs and long, luxurious filter sweeps, giving the track a spacier feel without losing the energy of the original. The Green Man (TGM) – Sound Power
Thursday, August 8th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Green Man (TGM) – Sound Power

Available from 19.07.2013
