Paul Nice – Five Fingers of Death (7inch Edition)

Image: 1609787 “I released the original 12” volume of FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH
BATTLE BREAKS way back in 1998, while I was living in Oakland
and then San Francisco during a time of incredible movement and
creativity within the suddenly exploding Scratch DJ scene.
The term “turntablist”, coined by DJ Disk, had yet to really catch on
outside of the Bay Area scratch fraternity. Having recently moved to
California from New York, Paul’s turntable aesthetics were strictly
80’s East Coast and was more concerned with “catching doubles”
(beat juggling) and overall party rocking. In other words, the science
of scratching was not something I was even contemplating.Needless
to say, I was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what DJs
like QBert, Shortcut, Apollo and Mixmaster Mike were doing.
It was also around this time that I had discovered that these guys
were giving a lot of play to an independently pressed beat record I
had made before leaving NY.“Fists of the White Lotus” was originally
on an instrumental EP I did with my mentor Joey T on his Empire
Records label (Beats Anonymous Vol.1). I remember when QBert
found out I had made that record. His immediate response was,
“Holy shit! I love that record!” I said back to him: “Can I quote you
on that?”
I pressed up the first couple of hundred copies of FIVE FINGERS
OF DEATH BATTLE BREAKS complete with a sticker on the shrinkwrap containing Q’s quote. Those first couple of hundred quickly
turned into a thousand. Then 3 thousand. Then before you know it,
Volume 2.And 3.And so on.
This record now is a nostalgic return to these days for me. A little
reminder of what made that time in history special for so many.”
– Paul Nice

Side Joey – Just one long scratch sentence
Side John – Fists of the White Lotus (Extended Edit) Available from 19.05.2017

DJ Low Cut – Dead End (2LP+MP3)
Wednesday, March 15th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DJ Low Cut – Dead End (2LP+MP3)

Image: 1609266 Stuck in the depths of a dark alley, blocked by yet another breeze, hitting a stone wall, road sign ahead: Dead End.
Impasse. “Cul-de-sac”.
Hip-hop. The original, some would say, official music of the late 20th Century Bronx.
Some say it has endured it’s fair share of distractions, detractors and defectors. Some say it has murdered itself, having been abandoned by its so-called best men, those who have gone off in other directions, or who have, simply, just beat-retired. Yet, there are plenty of Soldier Monks still out there, prepared to sweat it out in the Temple of Machinery and Mics.
Low Cut honored this cause four years ago, with his MPC crafted minimalist version of NY Minute and he’s back to ring the bells and unsheathe the samples!

The starting point of Dead End’s production remains the 90’s boom-bap, but the will to carry it even further brings it to its destination. By decorating it with rich samples flushed out after digging through vinyls pressed several decades ago, it is guided by a compass pointing deposits to the East. With sound quality inherited from a fastidious composition and mix works, using inspiration rather than just being a copycat, Dead End celebrates it without setting it up as a museum piece.

Picturing the beatmaker stuck in the depths of a dark alley, ended with a brick wall, is easy. But far from isolated in his Parisian basement, Low Cut has rung phones in New York, Baltimore and Detroit, rounding up the faithful. He magnetized the hidden but sharp forces, and gained attendance of legends. The casting of Dead End : Ruste Juxx & Nutso, Dirt Platoon, Guilty Simpson, Torae, Rasheed Chappell and the stainless Masta Ace, among other beat crushers. Also starring DJ Duke, Nix’on, Topic and Ordoeuvre with their DMC titles crates, for a deep beatfight on bars scarified of scratches.
Heavy atmosphere, martial beats and street soul, Dead End is also the final episode of the projects initiated by Low Cut, based on the model of a producer inviting various MCs.
He will then replace his turntable needles, refresh his sample banks, and settle the BPMs of his productions on more abstract frequencies.

L’Orange & Mr. Lif – The Life & Death Of Scenery
Friday, September 30th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on L’Orange & Mr. Lif – The Life & Death Of Scenery

Image: 1606601 North Carolina-born producer & veteran Boston MC f/contributions from Gonjasufi, Akrobaktik, Q-Bert, Chester Watson, & narrated by comedian Wyatt Cenac!

George Orwell once prophesized, “if you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever.” The latest EP from L’Orange & Mr. Lif, The Life and Death of Scenery, conceives a chimerical “lighthearted dystopia” just far enough from modernity to breathe easily, but close enough to make you consider relocating to that cave in the forest. In this collaboration with the eccentric North Carolina producer, L’Orange, Lif imagines an adjacent future called the “last society,” where culture has been obliterated and survival has taken precedence over art.

Released through a partnership between Adult Swim and Mello Music Group, the duo’s latest opus opens with one of four addresses from “The Narrator” (played by The Daily Show’s Wyatt Cenac). These Big Brother missives capture a world where the, “books are all burned, the vinyl has been melted, and the remaining art catapulted over the city walls.” The mere act of whistling is cause for the guillotine. It’s the rap analogue to Fahrenheit 451, 1984, or a Brave New World, where the Soma is uncomfortably soothing and the sunshine eerily abundant.

The former Def Jux legend inhabits on the role of The Scribe, frantically showing the post-apocalyptic survivors the power of what’s been lost. It attacks those who value disposable art over the timeless, it articulates the necessity of preserving culture, it lampoons the absurdity of attempting to destroy one of the most immutable qualities in mankind.

In L’Orange’s words, the collaboration is “a negotiation of influences without compromise.” You can hear the producer’s trademark alchemy of classic boom-rap with glitchy fuzz, a compressed whimsy that slaps against somber scythe-like piano lines, ominous spaghetti western licks, and celestial saxophone licks.

Lif spits staccato bars in double-time, adeptly slicing through the beats like banned books to a shredder. He’s joined on “Antique Gold” by the 19-year old monotone samurai, Chester Watson. Gonjasufi’s banshee yelp makes “Strange Technology” even more resonant. Insight bombards on “Five Lies About the World Outside.” The legendary turntablist Q-Bert contributes cuts on “The Scribe.” While Akrobatik, Lif’s longtime partner in The Perceptionists, pops up twice to exhibit their almost telepathic tag-team chemistry.

The rapping is virtuosic. The production is sumptuous and scene setting. But what sticks is those cumulative effects: the fantastic imagination of this foreign but familiar world, the importance of illuminations in a world that values cold logic, the sly humor of winking oracles, and inexorable fear that this could be a reality—should we continue down our current path.

Recorded direct from the sound board and mastered from first generation reel to reel, now available on CD.

4 . DISCIPLINE 27-II / WHAT PLANET IS THIS 23.47

Enlightenment is…. our tomorrow… It has no plane…. of sorrow
Hereby, our invitation… We do invite you…. Be of our Space World
Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra ’Enlightenment’
Within their 1973 European tour, Sun Ra and his Arkestra had just completed
a residency at the legendary Gibus in Paris in October before travelling to
Amiens for a Sunday afternoon concert. Those filing into the city’s Maison de
la Culture that day would have little idea of the intense, visceral experience
that awaited them. “Sun Ra’s use of the Arkestra as his instrument in an
onslaught of sound, colour and movement stimulated and even shocked the
senses and the shakras of audience participants onto a higher plane of spirit
consciousness,“ explains the Arkestra’s Knoel Scott.
On Side 1, the session kicks off with the theatrical overture, ’Enlightenment’ as
Sun Ra and vocalist June Tyson invite the audience to “be of our space world“.
Ra then moves into a rare instrumental version of ’Love In Outer Space’,
transforming the perennial Arkestra classic into a raw, ritualistic experience:
“this was a vehicle for the Arkestra’s space dancers. Close your eyes and
imagine them writhing across the stage in celestial homage,“ explains Scott.
Side 2 of the album opens with the glistening ’Lights On A Satellite’, a feature
for the spiritual tenor sax of John Gilmore, playing in unison with trumpeter
Kwame Hadi. Closing track, the epic, chaotic, anxious ’Discipline 27-II / What
Planet Is This’ moves from abstract, freeform keyboard work from Sun Ra to
a walking groove as Sun Ra and June Tyson take a thinly veiled psychedelic
swipe at life on earth: “If this is a planet of life, why do people die here? “
Following 2014’s landmark compilation presented by Marshall Allen, ’In the
Orbit Of Ra’, Strut and Art Yard join forces once more for the first release
anywhere of ’Planets Of Life Or Death’. Recorded direct from the sound
board and mastered from first generation reel to reel, the title is exclusively
available for Record Store Day 2015. The release features rare photos from
Sun Ra’s 1973 European tour by photographer Jan Persson with sleeve notes by
Knoel Scott.

Various – Angola Prison Spirituals

Image: 1602945 Recordings of 1950s folk-blues-gospel music from inmates of the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola. Death Is Not The End reissue on vinyl Dr. Harry Oster’s collection of recordings from Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, originally released in 1959. For a brief period, the American South was full of musicologists keen to record and archive the great and expansive tradition of folksong. The context of these particular recordings conveys the contrast between the stark dignity of the performers and the unpleasant circumstances through which they found their way into Angola. Here amongst them appears one of Angola’s most notable blues players Robert Pete Williams, having served time for murder in the 1950’s and going on to enjoy a fruitful and expansive recording career. For the most part though these voices belong to otherwise unknown inmates such as Tom Dutson, Andy Mosely, Roosevelt Charles and Robert ‘Guitar’ Welch.

J Dilla – Jay Dee’s Ma Dukes Collection

Image: 1610400 Since his untimely death at the all too young age of 32 the world has grown
to appreciate the work of J Dilla even more than when he was alive. There’s
an ethereal quality to Jay Dee’s works, part boom bap but more mellow.
Mellow, but never soft. And Dilla never stopped making beats, his MPC was
by his side until the very end. It now resides in the Smithsonian. Due the
prolific nature of his beat making, the world is blessed to have stacks of Dilla
material – some coming to light even this many years after his passing.
In the world of hip hop, no one’s mother is more famous that Ma Dukes. Go
ahead, name check Chuck D’s mom or Chance the Rapper’s mom or TI’s
mother – without hitting Google. And one of the reasons we all know
Ma Dukes is her tireless effort to maintain Dilla’s legacy. This release is yet
another step in that direction. Presented here, from the Official Ma Dukes
Collection, are 15 works by Jay Dee from deep in the vaults, being released

Shango Dance Band – Shango Dance Band

Image: 1609388 A LEGENDARY, ULTRA-RARE PRIVATE AFROBEAT KILLER, RESTORED AND PRESENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN WIDE RELEASE! Now without 7″ and at lower price!

TRACKLIST:
A1. Position Pass Power
B1. Women Are Great
B2. I Need Your Love

In the early years of Fela Kuti’s career, well before he would define the genre of afrobeat, and leave an indelible mark on the musical landscape, he was a struggling trumpet player, seeking to redefine the sound of his current group, the art-jazz ensemble Fela Ransome-Kuti Quintet. As he moved his group towards the thenpopular genre of highlife in 1963, he lost his bassist in the move towards commercial success, but gained the company of Ojo Okeji, who had a sterling reputation both as a bassist and percussionist in groups like Lagos Cool Cats, Rex Williams’ Nigerian Artistes, and Western Toppers Highlife Band, a favorite of Kuti’s. Okeji impressed Kuti with his deft jazziness on the bass, so he was in on the spot, and the Fela Ransome-Kuti Quintet became Koola Lobitos It was Okeji that introduced Kuti to the famed percussionist Tony Allen, (Who would subsequently join Kuti into his greatest years as an artist) as well as conguero Abayomi “Easy” Adio. During his time in Koola Lobitos, Okeji not only contributed deeply melodic, and adeptly rhythmic baselines, but brought his own influence from emerging US soul artists like James Brown & The Famous Flames and Wilson Pickett, heavily pushing Koola Lobitos towards a more soulful direction. This push was often resisted by Kuti, who frequently clashed with Okeji, who formed the group VC 7 as a side-project for that purpose. 1968 proved to be a turning point for the group, as the Nigerian Civil War broke out, and many starving musicians turned to the military for work. Okeji and Adio would leave for the army, while Kuti and Allen kept Koola Lobitos going, where it evolved through different names and iterations and grew into the worldwide afrobeat force that made Kuti an icon during the 70s and 80s. But as Kuti and Allen rose to global recognition, Okeji and Adio would form a new band within the ranks of the 6th Infantry Brigade of the Nigerian Army. Their emblazoned blue jackets earned them the nickname “The Blues”, but Okeji preferred the name Shango, after the Yoruba thunder god.
Shango took the fundamentals of Kuti’s famous afrobeat and brought new layers of guitar and horn arrangements, while often invoking supernatural aesthetics, and maintaining a love for the US soul artists that influenced Okeji so much. Because Shango was an army band however, their records were not readily available to anyone outside of the military so their music, including their eponymous 1974 LP, remained relatively unknown even amongst the people of Nigeria. So many decades later however, Comb & Razor presents it for the first time to a mass audience on vinyl.

It’s 1968 and Fela is in tears.
Fela Kuti, the genius of afrobeat. The champion of the people. Fabled for unflinchingly staring down the barrels of
state tyranny, enduring beatings within an inch of his life from government stormtroopers and then getting on stage
to mock his tormenters in song. Fela the fearless, Fela the invincible. Fela who they call Anikulapo—“he who carries
death in his pocket.” What insurmountable catastrophe could have reduced this formidable titan of African music
to tears?
Ojo Okeji leaving his band, that’s what.

In true Hot 8 style, this album pairs hard-hitting, heart-on-sleeve sentiment with party-fuelling beats, hooks and grooves, raw funk and charismatic hip hop vocals mix with Big Easy jazz elegance. Expect unshakable horn riffs and bubbling bass as the record transports you right into the centre of an electrifying Hot 8 party crowd.

“ [Hot 8] has helped galvanise its community since 2005, captures both the edginess and transcendent beauty of life in its city” – The Wall Street Journal

New Orleans’ Grammy-nominated Hot 8 Brass Band release their fifth LP, ‘On The Spot’.

The title of the new album refers to the glorious, rare moment in a New Orleans parade when the band stops to take a break but keeps noodling with their instruments for the crowd. Vibing, keeping the energy up, when they’re completely in the moment they sync up and the magic happens – a new tune is created: On The Spot. Their fifth LP sees Hot 8 committing this live sound and spirit to record like never before – note the exclamation captured on tape at end of the title track: “Did we just make that up?!”

These 11 tracks have helped the band get through their up and down moments, ‘On The Spot’ honours fallen friends and the city of New Orleans, and showcases new heights achieved after coming back from the deepest lows. “We still break down a lot,” says bandleader and tuba player Bennie Pete, “but now it’s tears of joy. We keep everything in our hearts, but we keep on.”

‘On The Spot’ also points to the way Hot 8 have had to adapt, learn and live from moment to moment throughout their career, and their lives. A barely imaginable series of trials – the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the separate deaths of five band members, and trumpeter Terrell “Burger” Batiste losing his legs in a car crash – have tested these men time and again. Their tragic yet life-affirming story has been featured in the Spike Lee documentaries When The Levees Broke and The Creek Don’t Rise, and David Simon’s HBO series Treme.

Harleighblu x Starkiller – Amorine (LP+MP3)
Wednesday, September 28th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Harleighblu x Starkiller – Amorine (LP+MP3)

Image: 1606643 Harleighblu X Starkiller is a formidable link-up between British soul/electronic singer Harleighblu and LA duo Starkiller (the production outfit of C.E. Garcia & Alfredo E. Fratti, members of Adrian Younge’s Venice Dawn). A science fiction film in sonic form, the ‘Amorine’ LP tells a tragic future love story in which high drama collides with a cool, clean, sci-fi atmosphere via hip hop sensibilities that draw on musical references from psychedelic funk to DJ Shadow to Portishead.

In the distant future, society is given a drug called “Amorine” to lull them into submission, and suppress all emotions.

We follow a young girl named Joanna, a citizen of a giant metropolis, who, due to a meeting of chance, has been struck by love at first sight: a young artist named Giraud, a resident of the lower levels of the city, has caught her eye, and she has become victim to what she thinks is an emotion known as “love,” but is unsure.

In attempts to feel the full effects of this newfound “emotion,” she confronts the boy, and convinces him to stop taking the drug. As the influence of the drug wears off, they both fall madly in love with one another.

In the midst of their romance, Joanna becomes ill, and Giraud takes her to a machine that allows them to see inside of her. There they discover that her entire body is nothing more than machinery, and without the drug in her system, she will die. Joanna comes to the realization that if she begins taking Amorine to save her life, the love felt for Giraud will be forgotten, and that she would rather die than forget her lover.

Given only 12 hours to live, the two spend every moment together. When the time finally arrives, they make their way to the highest point of the city, take hold of one another’s hand, and leap to their death.

On impact, Joanna awakes in a laboratory full of others just like her, she has been placed back online and is now faced with the harsh reality that with Giraud being human, she has lost him forever, and will have to exist in a world without him.

Key Marketing Points:
– Starkiller are the production outfit of C.E. Garcia & Alfredo E. Fratti, members of Adrian Younge’s Venice Dawn.

Puccio Roelens – Musica Per Commenti Sonori (LP+CD)

Image: 1606516 “Musica per commenti sonori”, also known as “Lipstick” and released by Costanza, came out in 1979 and is one of Roelen’s latest examples of library music before his death, which occurred in 1985. The tracks are often characterized by a typical late-seventies funky mood, but they also feature some laid down moments that would sound great in some erotic films soundtracks. ‘Music for all hours’ says the back cover, and that’s perfectly true!

Amleto Armando Roelens, also known under the artistic pseudonym of Puccio, had a musical career almost entirely devoted to jazz, he was one of the first, with his orchestra, to play music that, especially at the end of World War II, was regarded as a bad import product. After some collaborations with RAI, the Italian national television, his meeting with another composer, Armando Sciascia, made it possible for him to arrange many albums released by Vedette Records (Sciascia’s own label) and, in the mid-seventies, to compose some of the rarest and most precious library music, this includes the ultra-cult “Feelings”, on behalf of Jay Richford and Gary Stevan, which sees Stefano Torossi, Sandro Brugnolini and Giancarlo Gazzani’s collaboration.

“Musica per commenti sonori”, also known as “Lipstick” and released by Costanza, came out in 1979 after a couple of memorable LP’s, “Research Of Sound” and “Rock Satellite”, and is one of Roelen’s latest examples of library music before his death, which occurred in 1985. As in the two previous albums, the tracks are often characterized by a typical lateseventies funky mood, but they also feature some laid down moments that would sound great in some erotic films soundtracks. ‘Music for all hours’ says the back cover, and that’s perfectly true. For those wishing to have fun dancing, there’s nothing better than to set the turntable needle on tracks such as “Slip Back”, “Cobwebs”, “Leewards” and “Lipstick”, while for the hottest nightlife interludes we recommend “Rusty Letters” and “Effuse” without any hesitations. Kema – Alle Sorgenti Delle Civilta
Thursday, September 15th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kema – Alle Sorgenti Delle Civilta

Image: 1606429 The first-ever dedicated album release by pioneering female Italian film music composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist Giulia De Muittis (aka Mrs. Alessandro Alessandroni). Rare undercover pseudo-ethnological studio sessions made under her experimental alter ego Kema (The Pawnshop/Abnormal Sensations) combining the ethos of Can’s Ethnological Forgery Series (EFS) with the studio trickery of Delia Derbyshire and unshakable credentials as one of the founding figures of Giallo film music and Italian psych soundtracks.

Perhaps best known amongst fans of Italian production music and Giallo movie soundtracks as the wife of the legendary Alessandro Alessandroni, composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Giulia De Muittis was an equally formidable force who emerged from the formative years of the aforementioned anti-genres and rose to a monarchic status within the country’s vibrant, and seldom rivalled musical secret society. The cliché “behind every successful man, there is a strong woman” might not do Alessandro and Giulia’s long-running creative unison justice but one thing that rings true that in the shadows of Senor Alessandroni’s limelight (illuminated by his work with Ennio Morricone for the films of Sergio Leone and Dario Argento) remained a darker musical feminine force which in time has come to represent the duo’s finest and most sought after sonic artifacts. In a career that spanned four decades until her untimely death in 1984 Giulia’s collaborative work as a reliable creative all-rounder and pop polymath has stood the unshakable test of time like few other musicians resulting in projects like The Pawnshop, Femina Ridens, Revolver, Questo Sporco Mondo Meraviglioso, The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Tomb, Angoscia, Inchiesta Giudiziaria and Witchcraft ‘70 (Angeli bianchi Angeli neri) earning increasing “Most Wanted” status on the collectors’ market. It is of no coincidence that Giulia’s nom de plumes, Kema and De Muittis, have in recent, more educated years, become trusted seals of approval which connect top choice composers such as Raskovich (aka Sorgini), Stelvio Cipriani, Morricone, Braen (aka Alessandroni) Amedeo Tomassi, Piero Umiliani and Bruno Nicolai amongst select others. It is, however, De Muittis’ seldom heard self-initiated solo work for small independent Italian library music imprints that reveal a unique multi-instrumentalist female composer working at her most intimate and uncompromised best

No Regular Play – Can’t You See
Friday, August 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on No Regular Play – Can’t You See

Image: 1604656 No Regular Play has come along way in their pursuit of sonic excellence.
Their freshly completed second album, “Can’t You See”, is the duo’s finest
showing to date. Forged amidst the fires of coping with the loss of a dear
loved one, “Can’t You See” is a testament to the power of creativity
triumphing over and transmuting adversity.
The multi-instrumental and impressively talented band consists of born and
bred Minnesotans Gregory Paulus & Nicholas DeBruyn who relocated to
Brooklyn, NY, 10 years ago. They are the same Crew Love stalwarts that you
should know and love. This time around, the gentleman have pushed their art
and craft further than ever before, fine-tuning each individual sound on the
album to an unprecedented level of detail with the help of talented producer,
Alex “Hammer” Hamadey. The end result is a work that is robust, substantively deep and ready to soundtrack your night, be it a steamy dance floor or
a romantic summer tryst.
For the unfamiliar, No Regular Play’s creative essence is that of artists
inspired by the dirty instincts of the late night dance floor but married to the
lush harmony of the concert hall. This essence is on clear display in “Can’t
You See”, and definitively thriving.
The duo began composing this album shortly after the passing of Gregory
Paulus’ father, Stephen Paulus, one of the most prolific American composers
of the last century. Consequently, the core of the album is driven by their
bold spirit to positively respond to a very intense period in their lives. The
songwriting takes a deeper tone addressing the topics of life, death, hope,
cherished memories and perseverance. “Can’t You See” is about remembrance and embracing the beautiful truth that the music will always live on.
The second track of the album, “Lake Gilmore”, carries an eerie nostalgia
that serenely enhances this theme of remembrance. The melody is an outline
of a chord Stephen Paulus used to play frequently, a stylistic hallmark. No
Regular Play recorded this melody on Stephen’s Steinway grand piano from
1925, a family heirloom and the same piano he wrote music on every day of
his life. Throughout the album, there are many recordings made on
Stephen’s piano, so listen closely on “Be Together” & “Never Be the Same”.
These were some of the last notes played on the beloved instrument.
No Regular Play will be touring “Can’t You See” the world over, expanding
the project with a full live band including piano, drums, and saxophone. They

Painkiller – Execution Ground (2LP)

Image: 1605743 The seminal 1994 double album by the original PAINKILLER line-up BILL LASWELL, JOHN ZORN and MICK HARRIS on vinyl for the first time! Avant-jazz, grindcore, dub and ambient melt into eerie tracks of haunting atmospheres.

When PAINKILLER started in 1991, their first two albums “Guts Of A Virgin” and “Buried Secrets” (both released on extreme metal label Earache) were heavy attacks blending grindcore and free jazz that brought together the musical backgrounds of the three protagonists: drummer MICK HARRIS had just left grindcore legend NAPALM DEATH, JOHN ZORN explored new extremities with his NAKED CITY project while BILL LASWELL had as a member of roaring free jazz quartet LAST EXIT ( PETER BRÖTZMANN / SONNY SHARROCK / RONALD SHANNON JACKSON) proven that he was not only a visionary producer but also an accomplished bassist. But it is their 1994 double album “Execution Ground” that remains the opus magnum of the brilliant trio: ZORN’s unmistakable shrieking saxophone, HARRIS’ pounding drums and LASWELL’s growling sub-bass lines were given heavy mixing desk treatment, resulting in extended tracks that are no less intense than their early works but display the full range of the musicians’ skills. Soaked with reverb and delay, avant-jazz, grindcore, dub and ambient melt into eerie tracks of haunting atmospheres – even more so in the ambient versions of disc 2. Mastered and cut by RASHAD BECKER at D&M Berlin, “Execution Ground” is now available on vinyl for the very first time as 2x 180gr LP incl. a download code and insert in a limited edition of 500 items.

Maceo Parker – US
Tuesday, July 26th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Maceo Parker – US

Image: 1605382 Maceo Parker was one of the most revered and loved members of James Brown’s famed J.B.’s band from the late ‘60s to the mid-1970s. Alongside his instantlyrecognizable alto saxophone solos, he occasionally performed as comedian before James Brown shows, in addition to playing MC. He was a true renaissance man.
And while other members of The Godfather of Soul’s inner circle – most notably trombonist Fred Wesley – had solo albums at the advent of Brown’s People Records, Maceo had to wait his turn for a couple years. By the time 1974 rolled around, this talented musician and personality could not be denied, and he burst onto the scene as a group leader with one of the most impressive albums in the People catalog: the simply titled, but deeply felt, Us.
Maceo’s group (occasionally called The Macks) and Fred Wesley’s J.B.’s were essentially the same unit – including guitarists Jimmy Nolen and Hearlon “Cheese” Martin, drummer John “Jabo” Starks, saxophonist St. Clair Pinckney and of course Fred Wesley on trombone. Unsurprisingly, the material here is never-endingly funky. But as shown in the song selection (presumably by Parker, with heavy-handy assistance from the Godfather himself), there are as many ballads and soul groovers as there are straight-up funk workouts.
Cases in point include the mellow, Gamble & Huff-penned “Drowning In The Sea Of Love” (with organ, most likely played by James Brown, slithering in the background) and the syrupy “Show and Tell.” The album’s closer is also on the slower side, going very deep and striking a chord, as Maceo and Brown talk about conditions in the Black American landscape of the day over the course of 10-plus minutes.
And there is, of course, plenty of diesel funk here as well: singles like “Soul Power 74” and “Parrty” are downright nasty grooves, known well by James Brown fans old and new. “Soul Power 74” additionally features very early proto-sampling, with a baby’s cry as well as Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have Been To The Mountain Top” speech. And Maceo’s take on the J.B.’s classic “Doing It To Death” is a unique version, more muted and of course featuring Maceo’s gorgeous horn front and center.
Appearing at the apex of both James Brown’s and People Records’ power, Us is a treasured jewel in the J.B. catalog, and rightfully so. This 150 gram vinyl LP comes in a Stoughton Jacket, housed in a custom People Records poly bag, and includes 24” x 24” poster.

It’s 1968 and Fela is in tears. Fela Kuti, the genius of afrobeat. The champion of the people. Fabled for unflinchingly staring down the barrels of state tyranny, enduring beatings within an inch of his life from government stormtroopers and then getting on stage to mock his tormenters in song. Fela the fearless, Fela the […]
