David Floyd – Mandala
Friday, April 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on David Floyd – Mandala

Available from 03.06.2016

Chords – Biting Point / Amygdala
Sunday, June 16th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Chords – Biting Point / Amygdala

Image: 1581421 Ram Records are delighted to announce their second new signing of 2013… Chords. A man who’s rise through the ranks of drum & bass has been astonishing. Not surprising, producers who shine with such crisp musicality and production power on their earliest releases always get spotted quickly. And after his previous smashers, the next chapters in his exciting career will be written with Ram. In the words of Andy C..

“Chords is an incredible talent. His melodies, textures and arrangements are next level… We’re very excited about this producer… He’s gonna blow some minds!”

The mind blowing starts with a deep hypnosis session. Deep, warm and relentlessly pumping, ‘Biting Point’ is one long piano pounding shock out. Rolling and rush-soaked with a timeless progressive sound palette, this one’s an elevator – enveloping your floor into a trancelike state, ready for the next level.

Our minds continue to blow as we hit ‘Amygdala’. Literally: It takes its title from a crucial part of your brain that powers memory and emotional senses. Opening with a deep wash of synths and faraway thunder drama drums, we’re soon whisked off on a distorted bass roller coaster, dipping and rising on a hooky, infectious riff. Memories of the opening, inward-looking synth intro are soon triggered as we hit the breakdown. The only emotions your amygdala will be triggering right now are happiness and love.

Confident yet understated, these are two purring pieces of full-bodied contemporary D&B. Consistent in their quality but triggering different sonic senses and dancefloor motions, this marks a very exciting new chapter for both Chords and Ram Records. Available from 27.05.2013

Various – Beating Heart Malawi Originals
Saturday, July 16th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Beating Heart Malawi Originals

Image: 1605166 When Hugh Tracey (1903-1977) made 35,000 field recordings across Sub-Saharan Africa between the 1920s & 1970s, his intention was to reveal the beauty and complexity of the music to a world that saw little value in it. Today, almost 90 years later, Tracey’s bid to preserve the music of Africa for future generations lives on. ‘Beating Heart – Malawi’ has connected the archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers, making fresh sounds for a modern audience. This “originals” album collates the source material supplied to modern contemporary electronic artist to remix but is a historical document in its own right and a fascinating insight into Malawi’s rich musical heritage.

He recorded: Mouse-hunting songs, African separatist hymns, songs about rain and poverty, songs for pulling canoes, songs which warn against European beer, songs which complain about venereal disease, songs about the sounds of unseen aeroplanes, songs about a mosquito overturning a lorry, about a donkey complaining it wants wages instead of maize, about a baboon that dies after somersaulting for joy at hearing the sound of drums, commentaries on urbanisation, labour organisations and a praise song for a bicycle mender.

Building on Tracey’s vision, the income generated will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded.

Various – Studio One Showcase
Friday, January 8th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Studio One Showcase

Image: 1601536 Studio One Showcase brings together a new fine selection of classic tracks from Horace Andy, Freddy McGregor, Johnny Osbourne, Lone Ranger, Sugar Minott, The Heptones, Wailing Souls and other seminal reggae artists all recorded at Studio One in the 1970s.

By the start of the 1970s, Clement Dodd’s Studio One record label was at a crossroads. The previous two decades had given the producer and record label more success than most aspired to in a lifetime. From the mid-1950s on, the Downbeat Soundsystem had conquered all opponents – from Duke Reid to Prince Buster – and shaped and led the musical landscape of the dancehall. In the 1960s, the establishment of Studio One Records at 13 Brentford Road in Kingston, Jamaica, had led to a Ford Motors-esque production line of hits that similarly defined reggae music.

But the 1970s was to prove Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s most challenging and yet ultimately the most creative decade of all. Like the most zealous and resourceful of pioneers, Studio One was about to embark on a stunning era of reinvention, adaptation, stripping down and versioning, each step of which marked new musical developments in reggae music – roots reggae, deejay, dancehall, rub a dub and more.

This album presents an overview of this exciting and ground-breaking decade of the 1970s at Studio One, during an era where, despite challenges from new producers, political turmoil, and almost constant musical and technological innovations in reggae, Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd was able to maintain his position as the pioneering leader in reggae music, and to maintain Studio One is the number one sound in reggae music. Always.

Opez – Dead Dance
Friday, April 24th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Opez – Dead Dance

Image: 1596205 Opez are back with their new album Dead Dance.

Describing their style as “Latin Desert & Funeral Party” music, Opez clearly go their own special way.
But listen to the debut album “Dead Dance” and you will find that this path is quite an exciting one. Set
in a haunting environment of acoustic instruments and an expertly stylish production, the twelve songs
recorded by duo Massi Amadori and Francesco Tappi are a journey into a twilight world of emotion and
imagination.
If you take an off-road trip to the region north of Perugia and south of Firenze, west of Livorno and east
of San Marino you will find a number of little recording studios. This is Italy’s heartland you pass
through when you travel down from Milano towards Rome. It is exactly here where multi
instrumentalists Massi Amadori (guitars, slide guitar, percussions, ukulele, freeze sound & harmonium)
and Francesco Tappi (double bass, bows, whistle) recorded „Dead Dance“. Les Paul or Django
Reinhardt immediately come into mind during a first listen, even the Mississippi Delta blues sound or
Billy Vaughn’s happy orchestral sound being turned completely upside down. But “Dead Dance” has its
own individual melancholy, a lonely sound supervised by Italian afro-jazz-fusion expert Andrea Benini
of Mop Mop, not too far away from Angelo Badalamenti’s mysterious soundscapes for David Lynch’s
„Twin Peaks“ series, especially on the dark and entangling “Sanfisa”.
With additional musicians like the two percussionists and drummers Fabio Paglierani, an expert in dub
who brings a echoing twist to the sultry groove of “Adriatica” and the first single and video “Carlos
Primero” or Fabio “Mocambo” Tozzi who puts “Estelita”, “Diavolanza”, “Malinco” and “Libre” into an
authentic Fifties environment “Dead Dance” is a band affair. The vocals of Annalisa Bartolini (“Carlos
Primero” and “Sangoda”) as well as Dimitri “Didi” Mazzs (“Malinco”) add to the complete picture. As
Opez have been very strict about their acoustic appearance, the more they are happy now about the
result, „Tristu“ with its folk textures followed by the near tex-mex balladry of „Corolla” are two of the
many highlights on “Dead Dance”. They were cut directly to tape, no overdubs or long mixing sessions
involved. This is why “Dead Dance” sounds very spiritual, almost out of the real world: „To be honest,
we would love to play our music in churches. We are not your normal type of rock band, you know“,
says Massi Amadori, who is the main songwriter in the duo and responsible for all compositions on the
album. Although “Dead Dance” sometimes feels reminiscent of the Cowboy Junkies’ romantic
Americana or Los Lobos’ truthful adaption of traditional cumbia or bolero, “we see ourselves as very
Italian, very local.”
The stunning artwork and the accompanying video were created by Aimone Marziali who is also one of
the producers responsible for the sonically enhanced “Balera Del Mar”, the closing tune on the album.
Creating a mixture of the classic pre-Raphaelite drawings by 19th century painter Dante Gabriel
Rossetti and what George Yepes did for Los Lobos on their „La Pistola Y El Corazón.“ album, Marziali
is an integral part of the Opez cosmos. „Of course, the artwork is a crucial to what we want to achieve,”
adds Amadori. “Our music is very visual, very sensual and emotional. It is not only about an acoustic
experience but it appeals to all senses.”

Janelle Monáe – The Electric Lady
Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Janelle Monáe – The Electric Lady

Image: 1585806 Black & White Colored Vinyl + download. feat. Prince, Solange, Erykah Badu, Miguel, Esperanza Spalding.

As she began the audacious task of following up on her acclaimed debut LP The ArchAndroid – an album that topped critic’s lists in 2010 all over the world – she took along some trusty, brave companions: the original music producers of The ArchAndroid, Nate ”Rocket” Wonder and Chuck Lightning of Wondaland Productions. And together they crafted a new strain of jamming music they called ”ish.” In the hip hop community, ”ish” is a euphemism for the profane four-letter word for excrement, but as Monáe explains, they set out, like proverbial alchemists, to turn lesser substances into gold.

”This entire project was produced by Wonder & Lightning. We set out to make a soundtrack for the Obama era, something that spoke to the beautiful, majestic and revolutionary times that we’re living in. The musical language we’re speaking now is called ish. In the African-American community, we’ve been turning left-overs (like chitlins) and social depredation (like poverty) into delicacies and fine art for years. So we just set out to turn the rubbish all around us into something beautiful. Ish is the bowtie on the funk.”

From the sound of The Electric Lady, ish is an urgent and dangerous form of dance music, rebel music that forces one to fight, jam, and fall in love. Like on The ArchAndroid, the sonic textures of the album are varied, and the past and present come together to explode and create a mind-blowing future for pop and soul music. For example, wondrous strings reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield and Bernard Herrmann orchestrations abound, Hendrixian guitar solos soar, Outkast-like raps float over punk rock riffs, defiant socially-conscious lyrics extol the virtues of soul-searching and fighting for change, while the funk simply melts your speakers: 808s boom and Prince-like synthesizers squiggle in your earhole, making it veritably impossible to just sit still.

Da Lata – Fabiola
Thursday, November 7th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Da Lata – Fabiola

Image: 1583622 Da Lata is led by Chris Franck and Patrick Forge. Their new album entitled Fabiola and? ‘ first in 10 years, is set for release in October, the 18th in 2013 and draws on a worldwide family of performers. Mayra Andrade (Cape Verde), Miguel Atwood Ferguson (USA), Rich Medina (USA) Marcelo Janeci (Brazil) Luisa Maita (Brazil), Graveola (Brazil), Fabricio FBC (Brazil), Sacha Gabriel (Canada), Jason Yarde (UK), Finn Peters
(UK) and Diabel Cissokho (Mali) to name just a few have all helped craft a record with a raw and live approach fusing Afro-Brazilian influences with a dance-floor sensibility and a distinctly London attitude.
2013 marks 20 years since Chris Franck and Patrick Forge first came together and began experimenting and redefining Brazilian music. Over that time, the duo have had major international success both in bands (Smoke City, Zeep & Da Lata) and for Patrick as a respected DJ who was a pioneer for Brazilian music with UK station Kiss FM in the early 90s.
Da Lata have started the build-up for the release of Fabiola by giving away the “Allstars? ‘ live version” of Ronco Da Cuica as a free download via their website www.dalatamusic.com which also features the video. Da Lata are about to start a new chapter in their illustrious story. 20 years of Afro-Brazilian adventure and it ain t over’ yet !

A brief history…
Da Lata previously released two studio albums in 2000 and 2002 respectively followed by a remix album in 2004 all released through Chris Blackwell s Island Records’ subsidiary, Palm Pictures. Working alongside and collaborating with label mates like Ernest Ranglin Baaba Maal, Femi Kuti, Bebel Gilberto the band were in good company. Since 2005 Da Lata s schedule slowed down as members went onto be involved in’
other projects but Da Lata didn t lay dormant, they continued re-working and remixing’ other people s tracks and many of these mixes as well as classic Da Lata tracks are still’ regular features on discerning global dance-floors today.

A new era
In 2010 Da Lata took their first tentative steps towards what has now become Fabiola ,? ‘ a collection of songs born out of disappointment, heartbreak and frustration, that transmutes those emotions into defiance, release and transcendence. Drawing together
an extended family of collaborators old and new, the album is characterized by Da Lata s new “organic edge”, dispensing with programming and electronic production’ Fabiola s emphasis is definitely on the “real” in every sense.? ‘ ‘
“Fabiola” is diverse in style but homogeneous in it s sound and intent, melding elements’ of Brazilian and African styles and rhythms with everything from Folk, Rock and Psychedelia to Spoken Word, Soul and Dub. Written exclusively by Chris Franck and the various collaborators, Franck, Forge and super (more than an) engineer Toni Econimides are the team that have crafted Fabiola into Da Lata s most mature and? ‘ ‘
accomplished album.

Mala – Como Como (Theo Parrish RMX)
Thursday, November 7th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mala – Como Como (Theo Parrish RMX)

Image: 1584946 Fresh from inaugurating his new Wildheart imprint with a killer collaboration with Tony Allen, cult Motor City producer Theo Parrish (Sound Signature / 3 Chairs) maintains the languorous, dreamy vibe of Mala’s original but opens out the groove, allowing the South Londoner’s warm sub-bass to flex its muscle. The bass weight is tempered by deep, mantric keys, the soft choral vocals of Sexto Sentido, and Dreiser’s spiritual incantations.

A devotee of Jamaican sound system culture, Mala led from the front as the first waves of so-called “dubstep” filtered out from Croydon’s Big Apple Records, battering bassbins across South London in 2002/03 alongside the likes of Skream, Benga, Coki and Loefah. Fiercely independent, he co-founded the label and legendary club night DMZ (with Coki and Loefah) and has produced some of the scene’s most vital and acclaimed tracks as Digital Mystikz. He also established his own imprint – Deep Medi Musik – in 2006 as an outlet for his own sonic experimentations alongside those of his favourite producers. Mala is universally respected as an innovator and leader not only within the global bass movement but also within the broader electronic realm.

The results of a true culture clash, ‘Mala in Cuba’ marries the intricate rhythms and deep, spiritual roots of Cuba with Mala’s own roots in South London and his dedication to bass culture. Travelling to Havana with DJ / broadcaster / record collector Gilles Peterson and fellow producer Simbad in 2011 – where they were recording sessions for Gilles’s ‘Havana Cultura: The Search Continues’ album at Abdala Studios – Mala installed himself in a small studio across the corridor from the main hub. With a constant stream of gifted local musicians and vocalists passing through, from diva Danay Suarez to the legendary percussionist Changuito and acclaimed pianist Roberto Fonseca, this was a true journey of discovery for everyone concerned.

DJ Design comes from the same time and place in Hip Hip history as Peanut Butter Wolf – from the south San Francisco Bay Area, where rap music in the mid-1980s could occasionally be heard from low rider mini trucks, bad kids’ bedrooms in the suburbs, and the occasional weekend house party right before the […]
