Image: 1603698 PillowTalk are back with their new single Love Addicted on Crew Love Records.

Tracklisting:
A1. Love Addicted
B1. Booty Rang

2014 saw the debut LP “Je Ne Sais Quoi” (Wolf + Lamb Records) from California home grown trio PillowTalk aka Michael Tello, Ryan Williams and singer Sammy D. Now in 2016 after a practically non stop touring schedule that has taken them around the world and back, the boys of summer return with their long awaited and dance floor tested Love Addicted EP. A double case of signature vocal house trouble this release wastes no time getting into the groove. First up, Love Addicted throws the party into full swing with a mix of powerful house drums, funky bass and an acid line that surely gets Crankenstein’s approval (for those who know). On the B-side, but certainly not a sleeper, is Booty Rang. Think strong yet smooth drum programming, FM sounding melodies, Garage-y baseline
and lyrics all about yo bootay! Here’s more words from lead singer Sammy D: “Releasing music to the world has always been a joy for us. It comes few and far between based on our touring schedule, so when we get to sit down in a studio together, it always brings out the best in us. Here are two straight up dance floor jams. We had a hard time picking the lead track here as both are designed for peak time dance floor shenanigans. We have been performing these in our live set this past year and have seen first hand the magic of these tunes.”
The “Love Addicted” EP will be available in stores May 27th 2016 courtesy of Crew Love Records. Available from 03.06.2016

SQÜRL – Live At Third Man Records
Saturday, April 9th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on SQÜRL – Live At Third Man Records

Image: 1603507 Carter Logan, Jim Jarmusch, and Jozef Van Wissem are SQÜRL, an enthusiastically marginal rock band from New York City who like big drums & broken guitars, cassette recorders, loops, feedback, sad country songs, molten stoner core, chopped & screwed hip-hop, and imaginary movie scores. We are an enthusiastically genre-free record label who likes to hold good bands hostage in a big blue room with no corners and record their music with no take-backs or do-overs. SQÜRL’s experimental stage show and our desire to capture it are a match made in heaven for your ears and your turntable, and we’re ready to prove it to you.

To date, SQÜRL has released a series of 3 EPs with ATP/Recordings as well as music for the films THE LIMITS OF CONTROL and ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, the latter with Jozef Van Wissem who has since joined the band for many live dates. We are glad to add to their discography with this brand new live record, recorded direct-to-tape in March of 2015.

Egyptian Lover – 1983-1988 (Deluxe 2CD)
Saturday, March 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Egyptian Lover – 1983-1988 (Deluxe 2CD)

Egyptian Lover – 1983-1988 (4LP Box+MP3)
Friday, March 11th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Egyptian Lover – 1983-1988 (4LP Box+MP3)

Image: 1602876 1983 to 1988 anthology from the West Coast electro hip-hop pioneer.

Los Angeles native Egyptian Lover (Greg Broussard) is recognized as a pioneer of West Coast hip-hop, helping bring electro rap to the masses in the early ’80s and influencing DJs and MCs the world over in his wake. The first West Coast rapper/producer to achieve international success, Egyptian Lover paved the way for early West Coast hip hop pioneers like Dr. Dre and the World Class Wrecking Crew, N.W.A., Ice T, Rodney O & Joe Cooley, King Tee & DJ Pooh among others.

Growing up listening to Kraftwerk, Prince, Rick James and Zapp, Egyptian Lover got his start compiling mixes of his favorite records, including his own instrumental beats created on his Roland TR 808 drum machine. The club-ready cassette tape mixes started selling in the thousands. Following in the footsteps of The Sugarhill Gang, Broussard began rapping over his beats to give the party people what they wanted. The neighborhood responded, transforming him into a local celebrity.

With his star status rising higher, Egyptian Lover joined Uncle Jamm’s Army and moved 10,000 person crowds at the L.A. Sports Arena with his impressive knack for scratching, performing turntable tricks and MCing.

In the mid ’80s, L.A. was becoming the electro rap capital and Egyptian Lover was at the forefront of this new West Coast rap sound, not only with his unique producer/DJ/MC aptitude, but also as label owner of Egyptian Empire Records. Selling hundreds of thousands of his 12″ singles (“Egypt/Egypt”, “Dial-A-Freak”, “Girls”, “Freak-A-Holic”) to DJs and fans around the world. Egyptian Lover invented the innovative sound of combining up-tempo, synth-heavy electro beats with rap vocals.

Since 1983, Egyptian Lover has remained true to his sound by recording on analog equipment, which helps create his signature sound. Egyptian Lover’s influence cannot be overstated – not only did he change the face of West Coast hip hop, but also greatly influenced electronic, techno, R&B and pop music to this day.

Egyptian Lover 1983-1988 will be released April 15, 2016 as a vinyl box set: four LPs housed in an all-black case with gold foil print, 20-page book with photos, liner notes by Jeff Weiss, and detailed track history by Egyptian Lover. Recordings taken from the original master tapes.

DMX Crew – You Exist
Friday, January 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DMX Crew – You Exist

Image: 1601821 Hypercolour proudly announce the latest long player from UK stalwart, Ed DMX AKA DMX Krew, the visionary British electronic producer who has been responsible for a slew of excellent releases for labels like Rephlex, Spectral Sound, Permanent Vacation and his own Breakin’ Records and Fresh Up Records since the mid 1990s.

‘You Exist’ is DMX Krew’s debut appearance on Hypercolour, and as expected the record features nine tracks of beautifully crafted, melodic electronic sounds. From the opener ‘Spiritual Encounter’, DMX sets the tone perfectly with oodles of pitch perfect synth riffs and driving drums, working his way through snappy and bright pop moments like ‘Hard Copy’ to more melancholic, darker cuts like ‘Computational Paradigm Shift’. DMX breezes in and out of electro techno territory to more contemplative IDM vibes with ease, testimony to the guy’s talent (that’s also seen him wear the hat of over 10 aliases throughout his career to date).

‘You Exist’ captures a very true and genuine musical form, produced and delivered with love from one of the scene’s unsung heroes, and makes it a great companion piece to another Hypercolour released album from similar stock (take your pick from Luke Vibert’s 2014 ‘Ridmik’ album or his latest Kerrier District LP). A consistent and engaging album then from DMX Krew that will pleasure the ear buds of discerning listeners everywhere.

TRACKLIST
1. Spiritual Encounter
2. Bombay Mix
3. Hard Copy
4. Dark Rider
5. Daylight Saving
6. Woolly Hat
7. Parallel Universes
8. Computational Paradigm Shift
9. Black Poppy

The James Hunter Six – Something’s Calling / Talkin’ Bout My Love
Tuesday, January 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The James Hunter Six – Something’s Calling / Talkin’ Bout My Love

Image: 1601761 Within the House of Soul, the Daptone Staff is affectionately referred to as “The Hate Crew,” a name they have earned from their years of ruthless evisceration of anything which doesn’t meet their impossibly idealistic expectations. Armed with rolling eyes and barbs of sarcasm, they are the true guardians of the Daptone Sound. The problem is, this new James Hunter single has turned them all into adorable little kittens. They spend all day mewing to the ballads and scampering about to the uptempo cuts instead of selling records. In an effor t to save the company, label Boss Neal Sugarman declared a “Hunter Free Zone,” but when he tried to pr y the test pressing of Hunter’s latest single from the office turntable and replace it with something a bit more hate-able, the needle slipped and dropped back into the grooves of “Something’ s Calling,” irreversibly morphing him too into a small playful kitten. Sunny & The Sunliners – The Missing Link (BF RSD)
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sunny & The Sunliners – The Missing Link (BF RSD)

Image: 1615557 $2 from each copy of The Missing Link sold on Black Friday Record Store Day 2017 will go to The Greater Houston Community Foundation to help with relief for areas of Texas that were affected by Hurricane Harvey When it comes to living legends in the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than vocalist, songwriter and bandleader Sunny Ozuna. Born and raised in San Antonio, where he still resides, Sunny became a star right out of high school in the late ‘50s and hasn’t looked back in the six decades since.
After releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in Spanish and English), Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a
teenager. His classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal.
As a logical next step after Big Crown’s excellent (and Sunny-approved) Mr. Brown Eyed Soul compilation from September, the label has started digging into the vaults of Sunny’s Key-Loc Records label to unearth some legit soul classics – which are hard to find even in San Antonio, and clean originals will cost you a pretty penny if you ever luck into one – and have not been on vinyl since the late ‘60s. Each has been remastered and includes original album art.
Second in the reissue series is The Missing Link, a 10-cut, all instrumental album, and the tracklist is a wild ride indeed. Ranging from hip soul – James Brown’s
“Soul Pride,” The Inclines’ Muscle Shoals groover “Pressure Cooker,” and the Meters classic “Cissy Strut” – to a wide swath of ‘60s Texas Latin party essentials (“Uno,” “Rosita Bonita” and “La Pecosita”), the Sunliners are in top form all throughout. It won’t take much to envision a San Antonio backyard BBQ in the early ‘70s with this long player spinning in the background, on repeat.
Instrumental party albums were all the rage back when this hit in the late ‘60s, and Sunny Ozuna and crew show here that they could groove with the best of them. Throw it on, break out the back deck smoker, and let the good tunes roll.

Various – Jukebox Mambo Vol.3

Image: 1611995 • Jazzman Records releases the third volume of its Jukebox Mambo compilation series, artfully selected by DJ Liam Large.
• A journey through the popular American music of the 1950s influenced by exotic rumba and Afro-Latin seasoned rhythm and blues.
• Featuring rarities and unearthed gems from Percy Mayfield, Roy Gaines, Chuz Alfred, Monogram Caribbean Orchestra, and many more.
• The twenty-four track compilation comes complete with in-depth track notes and photographs, as well as a deluxe double vinyl edition with gatefold sleeve, and a super limited edition vintage style 6 x 10″ book set – with unique artwork and four exclusive bonus tracks

Since the release of their first Jukebox Mambo compilation album in 2012, Jazzman Records, with the curatorial expertise of DJ Liam Large, have been opening ears and minds to the delights of Latin-tinged Rhythm & Blues. This, the third release in the series, sticks squarely to the tried and tested formula of its predecessors, combining a crate-digger’s passion for the obscure with an ear for instant dancefloor crowd pleasers.

In a congested field of R&B comps, Jukebox Mambo stands out uniquely in shedding light on the era of Latin American and Caribbean influence, a sensual rhythmic shift which continues to be felt in modern music today.

Opener, The Emperor’s ‘Tough De Times (Things Getting Tough)’ is a classic example of Large and Jazzman’s idiosyncratic capacity to bring striking singularities to light, a beguiling and seductive blend of jazz, blues and Trinidadian calypso. Other highlights include the slinky rumba-blues of Percy Mayfield’s lustful ‘Loose Lips’, the only known recording by female blues shouter Ethel Boswell on the track ‘No More For You’, and Chuz Alfred’s powerful rendition of the Duke Ellington standard ‘Caravan’. Elsewhere, Jukebox Mambo 3 is dominated by virtuosic performances, from the smooth tenor vocals of Roy Gaines to the polyrhythmic swing of the Monogram Caribbean Orchestra, and the Syrian-American jazz stylings of Eddie Kochak.

The compilation comes with in-depth track notes and photographs, is available as a deluxe double vinyl tip on gatefold as well as a super limited edition vintage style 6 x 10″ book set – with unique artwork and four exclusive bonus tracks.

Lovingly compiled, artfully arranged and expertly annotated, Jukebox Mambo Volume 3 is another immersive gaze into an era of musical history that still carries a unique influence today. This one is for the crate diggers and music lovers alike!

Picking up where they left off on the 2007 compilation ‘Lost & Found – Rockabilly & Jump Blues’, Keb Darge & Cut Chemist join forces once again, this time to explore the wonderful world of 1960s Garage music. While Rockabilly could be defined as a DIY emulation of the music of Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and others by young American artists, Garage was heavily influenced by British bands of the day like the Beatles, Kinks & Rolling Stones. Simple drum kits, guitars and the occasional organ keep the sound honest and raw, retaining a palpable sense of excitement even to this day. With a multitude of bands springing up all over the SA, many of these wonderful records were released in tiny numbers, making certain titles almost impossible to find. Keb Darge’s love affair with this intriguing genre happened almost by accident, while on the hunt for obscure Northern Soul records. “DJ Shadow told me I would like Garage years ago, but I didn’t listen.” Hearing a few records he liked and being assured by collectors that they were classified as ‘Garage’ got him hooked, so for the last years he’s been digging obsessively for the stuff. Knowing Cut Chemist was a collector, he suggested they collaborate on a compilation, and ‘The Dark Side’ was born. 30 obscure records, some of which change hands for frightening amounts of money, all with wonderful stories attached as told in Keb’s encyclopedic and entertaining liner notes.
“This compilation is not aimed at the many collectors of this wonderful style of music. I am a very late arrival on this scene, and still have a hell of a lot to learn, and buy. This is more for people like I was just three years ago, people oblivious to beauty, power, and excitement of the sixties garage sound.” – Keb Darge 2016

Key selling points:
– Internationally renowned for his knowledge of soul, funk & rockabilly, Keb Darge turns his attention to the 60’s US DIY ‘Garage’ sound.
– Introduced to Gargae by friends DJ Shadow, Billy Gibbons (Z.Z.Top) and Cut Chemist, Keb chose the latter’s expertise to assist him on the making of this compilation.
– A founder member of Jurassic 5 & Ozomatli, Cut Chemist collaborated with DJ Shadow on Brainfreeze, probably the most sought-after mix CD of all time.
– The album features highly informative and entertaining sleeve notes written by Keb Darge himself.
– Currently dazzling the world with live audio-visual sets, Cut Chemist has been pushing boundaries in hip hop and beyond for almost three decades. Available from 10.03.2017

Pete Rock & CL Smooth – They Reminisce Over You/Straighten It Out
Tuesday, December 13th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pete Rock & CL Smooth – They Reminisce Over You/Straighten It Out

Image: 1607821 “Only a few people have ever changed the way that records are made. Pete Rock is one of them,” veteran hip-hop A&R man and producer
Dante Ross told Brian Coleman in the book Check the Technique Vol 1. “People like Pete change the sound palette for the whole world.
He had a signature sound, and that’s so hard to get.”
It is a tall boast, but it’s backed up two different ways: by fans of the group from back in the ‘90s who knocked each other over in record
stores to get the latest Pete Rock production, and by record buyers today, who still hear the same freshness in the group’s sound that
people did more than two decades ago.
These two songs are taken from the group’s legendary first full-length from 1992, Mecca & The Soul Brother. Originally, both were their
own 12-inch singles, but for this special, first-time-ever 7-Inch release, they are paired together.
“They Reminisce Over You” – a tribute to their late friend Trouble T-Roy (a member of Heavy D’s crew) – is one of the most beloved
hip-hop tracks of the ‘90s, and rightfully so. Grooving very deeply over a filtered bassline and a now-ingrained Tom Scott saxophone riff
(“Today”), CL Smooth lives up to his moniker, weaving various tales and lessons about family and friends. His status as a storytelling
MC remains underrated, but here it remains proudly on display.
“Straighten It Out,” although not the runaway smash that “They Reminisce” was, is equally emotional and soulful. Again over a
mid-tempo groove, and again with Pete’s trademark warm horn samples, CL explained in Check the Technique, “On [part of] the song, I
was talking about sampling, and I was basically reacting to how everything was such a procedure when you had to clear stuff. They didn’t
seem to care about how their music affected anyone else, they just wanted money. So it was just something that needed to be
straightened out. Older artists thought that us younger cats were ripping them off, but it wasn’t like that. It was a tribute.”
So here’s the math: one classic hip-hop group, two memorable singles, one killer 7-Inch. Case closed. Available from 20.01.2017

MF Doom – Operation:Doomsday
Friday, October 28th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on MF Doom – Operation:Doomsday

Image: 1606605 Back again on vinyl where it belongs, MF DOOM’s 1999 classic Operation: Doomsday is now presented on a premiumgrade
LP, with audio re-mastered from the original Fondle’Em Records release, and a poster of the album cover art!
Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF DOOM hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD (his
first group)’s 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was shelved by Elektra in 1994 and his blood brother Subroc (one
half of the sibling rap duo) passed away, surviving frontman Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF
DOOM and the Rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol’ Dirty Bastard kind
of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles
are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, “Rhymes Like Dimes,” Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through
his abstract wordplay, spitting ‘only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude
on self-destruct.’
Who You Think I Am? features DOOM‘s crew M.onster I.sland C.zars, while on “?” he trades hot verses with former
Columbia artist Kurious Jorge. Doom’s avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists
on “Tick, Tick…” where he and guest MC MF Grimm’s flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and
slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly
as they come. And in today’s bland commercial Rap universe, Operation: Doomsday’s left-of-center beats and
rhymes are the perfect remedy.

Nouvelle Vague – I Could Be Happy

3. I Wanna Be Sedated

5. All Cats Are Grey
6. No One Is Receiving
7. Maladroit

Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague = New Wave.
This transliteration was the starting point for Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux’s unique project, which, by appropriating the punk and post-punk cannon and running it through the Bossa Nova filter, reinvented the cover band genre, revealing new and brilliant talents along the way: Camille, Phoebe Killdeer (whose Fade Out Lines was remixed by The Avener,) Nadeah, Mélanie Pain, and, soon, Liset Alea.
The gambit paid off, with sales of over one million records over four albums released between 2004 and 2010, and world tours that included stops at venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall, L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl and Paris’ Olympia. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects: Olivier’s Uncovered Queen of the Stone Age, and Marc’s Bristol, along with his
Kwaidan label.
The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with a new album “I Could Be Happy” and live show, the band and its coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers.
This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani.
A worldwide tour is already confirmed and announced. It will begin in Europe and Asia, in the fall, and will continue through South America and the U.S.A. in the new year, and feature the entire crew on stage, around Marc and Olivier: Mélanie Pain, Élodie Frégé, and Liset Alea.
