As his interest in electronic music grew, Francesco decided to harness his conservatory qualifications to foray into the electronic medium, and what began as a hobby became his passion and […]

Image: 1611299 Hailing from Huntington Beach, the six piece rock reggae band Simpkin Project put a distinct California feel into their work. From the electric guitar accents from group founder and lead singer Phil Simpkin, to the smooth vocal harmonies created with co-founder Sean Kennedy, the sound is at once familiar and refreshing. Having a strong knowledge and respect for roots reggae, the songs blend their favorite influences from Jamaica and California, including latin percussion. The live instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics give these mid-tempo grooves a broad appeal, the music shines like a beam of light. “Beam Of Light” is available as 12-track CD in a digipak) with additional 8-page booklet and as 10-track LP black vinyl in a standard jacket, and will be released on the VP Records sublabel Dub Rockers.

THE BAND
Simpkin Project plays a multi-faceted blend of reggae and Americana that varies greatly on its exterior layers but only atop the organic rhythms of reggae music. Their sound has been described as “uncompromising… blending authentic roots reggae rhythms with a wall-of-sound production style”. The lyrical compositions of frontman Phil Simpkin range “from the simply truthful to the stirringly anthemic”. Their dedication and respect for reggae music is both seen and heard through their nunique, enthusiastic live performances, songwriting style and studio recordings.

Rich guitar work that draws from influences in blues and rock’n’roll is rarely in dull company, propelled steadily forward by the band’s thumping drums, bass and percussion, and the clockwork sound of rhythm guitar that defines Jamaica’s most culturally celebrated music. Their keyboard arrangements are lush and vibrant, providing a melodic backdrop against which three-part vocal harmonies shine brightly.

These pieces come together to form a kind of living machine comprised of six cogs that change shape, size and tempo,, moveing not only bodies on a dance floor, but the hearts and minds inside them. Simpkin Project’s music can be likened to a dialect of its parent language – culturally adapted to make sense in its place and time. It is music that addresses the struggles we all face, showing us that there is beauty in all things, from love to loss to injustice, and thus remaining true to the messages of traditional roots-reggae without which it would not exist.

Phil Simpkin: Vocals/Lead Guitar
Nick Zermino: Bass
Sean Kennedy: Drums
Shawn Taylor: Vocals/Keyboards

A few quotes:

“Simpkin Project has it going on! The band’s ability to varnish stylistic modifications over an organic reggae rhythm, producing a gorgeously incomparable sound that is all their own. And if that’s not enough, they leaven the sound with dazzling vocal harmonies, instrumental harmonics and contagious melodies.”
(Huffington Post)

“I don’t use the word amazing lightly, but the simple fact is that there aren’t a lot of contemporary reggae bands that play roots reggae at the level of the bands I listened to growing up. The Simpkin Project is the rare exception.”
(Madcap Music Review)

“Their live performances leave you in a trance, as they often take their well-known songs and break into off-the-cuff jams.”

Caroline K – Now Wait For Last Year

Image: 1603281 Blackest Ever Black and Klanggalerie present the first ever vinyl reissue of Caroline K’s outstanding 1985 album, Now Wait For Last Year. This haunting, wistful work of post-industrial synthesizer music – the late Nocturnal Emissions co-founder’s only solo record – has accrued a fervent cult following over the past 30 years, and copies of the original pressing are today extremely rare and sought-after. Appropriately enough for an album concerned with the disruption of linear time – it takes its title from a Philip K. Dick novel concerning a highly addictive hallucinogenic drug, JJ-180, that induces time travel for its users – the music on Now Wait seems to exist firmly outside of it. Tags like industrial, minimal synth or proto-techno can’t really do justice to the richly cinematic sound-world that Walters describes: from the sustained ambient tension of sidelong opener ‘The Happening World’ to the future-primitive rhythms and stately piano flourishes of ‘Animal Lattice’, and the melancholic, deep-frozen synth sequences of ‘Chearth’. Fans of Wendy Carlos’s A Clockwork Orange, Chris Carter’s The Space Between, and early Detroit techno should pay special attention, but this searching, future-proof masterpiece demands to be heard by all.

Corduroy – London England Live (RSD)

Image: 1587554 Amidst the exaggerated swagger of ‘Lad-Rock’ and the self-conscious ‘Brit-Pop’ excesses of the mid-nineteen nineties, the NME Reader’s ‘Best Live Act’ awards, placed an Acid Jazz combo, Corduroy, amongst its top five – not bad for a band of who’s stage set largely consisted of instrumentals.

Formed in December 1991,and signed to Acid Jazz Records in January 1992, the south-London four-piece’s live performance was energetic and infectious, rubber-band bass runs, buzz-saw guitar lines, creative funky drumming and a relentless soundscape of Hammond organ and melodic electric piano, combined into an adrenaline rush that was exciting, filmic and cartoonish.

The ‘fabric four’ became an instant hit on the international live circuit, their shows a frenetic celebration of grooviness and fun. The recordings featured on this disc are highlights from two informal home-town shows (by invitation only) for friends, musicians, and record label in-crowd. Capturing the adrenaline and audacity of a band clearly enjoying the party, these tracks are a memorial to the giddy Acid Jazz years (bum notes and all), and the place where it all started – London England. You are invited!

Black Grass

It’s an old cliché that opposites attract, but one that’s rarely appropriate in the field of music where ‘musical differences’ are more commonly cited as grounds for divorce. It’s all the more surprising then that two such disparate worlds should collide and that the fallout would be an album that wipes the floor with the competition before rubbing their noses in it for good measure.

The Black Grass story is centred on Brighton, where Mex and Carl Faure currently reside. Mex originally hails from Fulham, is 34 and has a deep and abiding love for hip hop and the breaks that fuel it. His Clockwork Voodoo Freaks alter ego found favour with compilers from “On The Floor At The Boutique” to Fat City’s “Mystic Brew” series. He was also resident at Brighton’s revered hip hop throwdown, Knowledge Of Self. Carl – a Brummie by birth – is almost ten years his junior, having a background in drum & bass and nu jazz. Having met in a Brighton record shop, the two decided to pool their resources and find out what each had to offer the other …
