Los Hacheros – Bambulaye
Friday, April 15th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Los Hacheros – Bambulaye

Image: 1603634 Brooklyn’s Los Hacheros, modern-day torchbearers of the Golden Age of Latin music, recorded their sophomore album Bambulaye (February 26 / Chulo / Daptone Records) live to vintage analog tape, giving the music a raw, but warm and open sound similar to the Latin legends that have inspired them. Their debut album Pilon was a well-received introduction to the band and received critical praise from tastemakers including Wax Poetics, Vibe Magazine, and The Washington City Paper, amongst others. Wax Poetics states, “The groove to this music is deep,” while The City Paper boasts, “…its solid arrangements and lively original songs have impressed old-school salseros and young music fans alike.”

“Bambulaye was recorded to be gritty, driving, and infectious, with the goal to get you up and dancing from first listen.” says producer / guitarist Jacob Plasse, also founder of the Daptone-distributed Latin revival label, Chulo Records. “I wanted this record to feel and sound the way it does when we play our final sets at 3am, exhausted in East Harlem dives. Suddenly the band comes to life and all the old dancers are at it like it was 1970 again. In those moments, we feel like we could play all night.”

Los Hacheros revives folkloric styles like son montuno, guaracha and salsa, and often combine them with Bomba, a fiery rhythm from the mountains of Puerto Rico. “Los Hacheros has the magic of group improvisation,” adds bassist William Ash. “We play in a style that is swing oriented and emphasizes the Cuban clave like great ones of old: Arsenio, Reve, Ritmo…”

A band of only 5 musicians, Los Hacheros can sound like a conjunto of 12. Eddie Venegas (Marc Anthony, Orquestra Broadway), who plays violin and sings chorus, improvises mambos on the trombone, Itai Kriss

(Edmar Castaneda, Grupo Latin Vibe) sings, plays flute, campana, and guiro, while Papote Jimenez is in charge of lead vocals, soulful soneos (improvised verses) and congas. William Ash (Alfredo de la Fe, Brenda K Starr) holds down the tumbaos on baby bass while Jacob Plasse plays the tres, a guitar-like instrument originating from the Oriente Province in Cuba.

“There are a million tiny cues on Bambulaye that let you know it is a live band,” describes Plasse. “It feels like it could both fall apart and explode at any moment.” Available from 22.04.2016

Peliroja – Injusticia
Friday, January 8th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Peliroja – Injusticia

Image: 1601470 Producer and guitarist Jacob Plasse has united some of his old friends—players from the Daptones, Pedrito Martinez Group, and Los Hacheros—to form Peliroja, a New York collective inspired by the sounds of Ethiopia, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and the Congo. Their debut album, Injusticia, will be out next week, August 19, on Chulo Records, a label devoted to the transcendental sounds of New York Latin music.

“Some of the musicians in Peliroja and I would meet up after school on Jane Street in the West Village, at a stoop with some Old English, a spliff, and a tape deck,” says Jacob, best known as producer and musician for salsa masters, Los Hacheros. “We were gangly, awkward 15-year-olds and not cool by any means. I’m not sure how we became obsessed with obscure ’70s funk and Afrobeat music, but that’s what we would listen to: the 3 Sounds, Lyn Collins, Africa 70.” Two decades later, his friends have gone on to become key players in the Brooklyn funk scene, and Jacob has spent the last ten years refining his music on the road with salsa and bachata bands.

Produced and cowritten by Plasse, Injusticia was recorded live to tape at his studio in Brooklyn, in the spirit of the music he was raised on. The groove to this music is deep and heard in the way the Daptones’ rhythm section—drummer Homer Steinweiss and bassist Nick Movshon—play off the polyrhythms of Carlos Padron’s timbales and Jhair Salas’s congas, forming a new fusion of old sounds. Jainardo Batista’s vocals soar over these rhythms, propelled forward by Mike Eckroth’s mercurial arrangements.

“I think the experience of growing up in New York and getting to hear and play with all these wonderful musicians and having them in my life has let me create something that is true to myself, and hopefully them as well,” Jacob adds. “This album is for those boys on the stoop who hadn’t figured out how to be in this world, but were lucky enough to know what they loved.”

Melaza – Melaza
Thursday, March 27th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Melaza – Melaza

Image: 1587626 Remember when each time you went to the club a new record would grab you with its complexity and beauty? When the harmonies and rhythms were so deep and infectious that one was powerless against the music’s demand to move, to dance?

Well, neither do we.

But Melaza is a group of musicians who can’t seem to let go of the challenge that Mongo and Barretto and Hector stamped onto wax, taunting us with the majesty of their swing, the power and effortlessness of their music.

So we slug it out, fighting our current cultural amnesia at 4 a.m. at Umbrella’s in the BX or quinceaneras in the Heights, refining our craft, trying to balance these ghosts on our shoulders. Last winter, the fourteen of us finally got together, cramming into a studio in south Williamsburg to lay these tracks down live. And if the joy in creating this music seeps out your speakers, then we’ve done our job.

You can preview our debut album below. Our music is available now on Chulo Records.
