Image: 1579839 Dettmann turns over two album tracks from Vedomir’s killer long player on Dekmantel.
Marcel Dettmann makes his debut on the Dekmantel imprint and takes on two Vedomir alias Vakula remixes. So what else to expect but forward thinking techno from the man who has been widely regarded as one of the genres most respected dj’s? Keywords are stripped, dark, raw, hypnotizing and dystopian, we could almost say ‘business as usual’ from this longtime Berghain-resident, who received remixes requests from the likes of Scuba, Modeselektor, Trus’Me and Junior Boys in the past, while zeitgeist-defining labels like Ostgut Ton, Music Man and 50Weapons have been putting out his always-on-point productions Available from 17.05.2013

Long awaited debut album by drum & bass production duo Subz & Matik …

Posted in Magazine, News | No Comments »

Subz & Matik’s tunes transport what most people love about drum & bass in the first place: a soulful dubbed out groove, topped with sparse but decent vocals, while not being cheesy. Nevertheless deep, jungley subbass plays the most important part in their production. Hence the name Subz & Matik. Remarkably, in most cases it […]

Various – Virtue Recording Studios (LP+MP3)
Wednesday, April 12th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Virtue Recording Studios (LP+MP3)

Image: 1609712 Born January 21st, 1923, Frank Virtue was a Philadelphia musician, record producer and record label owner whose career stretched from the big bands of the 1940s to the hip-hop and rap of the 1990s. As a 15-year-old living in South Philadelphia he began to play the guitar and upright bass. He studied classical bass and upon high school graduation Frank entered Temple University and studied electrical engineering and musical arranging.

After he was discharged from the service in 1947 he formed the Virtuoso Trio who later became the Virtues. In 1958, the Virtues recorded “Guitar Boogie Shuffle” which became a major hit in the U.S., reaching No. 3 on the Billboard chart and No. 1 in sales of sheet music. The song sold more than two million copies worldwide. Frank Virtue disbanded the group in 1962 when he went full time into the recording studio business.

Frank Virtue built his first studio, Virtue Recording Lab, in the basement of his house at 8500 Fayette Street. “Guitar Boogie Shuffle” was recorded there. The revenue from “Guitar Boogie Shuffle” helped finance the Virtue Recording Studio in late 1962 at 1618 North Broad Street. During the 1960s many hit records were recorded at Virtue, e.g. “The Horse” by Cliff Nobles & Co. and “Boogaloo Down Broadway” by Fantastic Johnny C. to name just two. Virtue Studios had a package deal where a group could pay a flat fee of $300-$500, record two songs, and have them pressed as a 45 on their own label, or on the Virtue house label. This package deal resulted in some of the most unusual sounding, low-fidelity soul and garage 45s that are highly sought after today.

Contrary to popular belief, Virtue Studios did not close in the early 80s. During the 1980s through the early 1990s, Virtue Studios was the home of a number of rap groups. A few months after Frank Virtue passed away Saturday, June 11th, 1994 at age 71, the studio was sold to another party who ran a recording studio at that same location for a few years before going out of business. The owner of the building sold the historic 1618 North Broad Street property to Temple University who then knocked the building down around the year 2001. Today, there is no trace or historical marker that Virtue Recording Studios ever existed, except for the music, records and acetates that have survived the ravages of time.

Key selling points:
– most of the songs appear legitimately licensed for the very first time on CD/digital
– the vinyl LP comes with a full album download code
– 12-page CD-booklet and double gatefold vinyl LP contain detailed liner notes and unseen photographs

Brazilian Octopus – Brazilian Octopus
Thursday, January 19th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Brazilian Octopus – Brazilian Octopus

Image: 1608329 The only album by Brazilian Octopus is a wonderful mix of bossa nova, pop, Cuban rhythms, jazz and all kinds of cool sounds and vibes that transcends any possible category. Among several top musicians, the band features Hermeto Pascoal, Cido Bianchi (former Milton Banana Trio member) and Lanny Gordin. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl. This is such a unique album. Each tune is a winner, no wonder originals have fetched exorbitant prices in the collectors market, and it has been hailed by connoisseurs such as Nicola Conte or Andy Votel over the years.

It features Hermeto Pascoal, Cido Bianchi (former Milton Banana Trio member), Lanny Gordin and shows an unusual mix of different styles and influences that transcends any possible category: from pop to Cuban rhythms. The bossa nova is obviously also present, as in many other Brazilian recordings from 1969, but the complex arrangements make this record lean towards the jazzier side of things while the organ/guitar/vibes sounds will also be appealing for garage music lovers.

Brazilian Octopus was formed in 1968 after Livio Rangan, a wealthy businessman from Sao Paulo, asked Cido Bianchi to put together a band that would play at the shows run by his fashion company, Rhodia. A proper work contract was issued, including three months of paid rehearsals. Despite their diverse background, most of the members of the band already knew each other as they would often perform at Stardust, a popular club managed by Lanny’s father. Hermeto Pascoal and Nilson da Matta joined the band a few months later. Then Mr Rangan approached the band again with a new idea: the recording of a full album mixing tunes written by other artists and their own compositions. The record was released by Fermata in 1969 and the band was then tempted with the idea of recording a second album. However, the offer was declined since the musicians had not received any fee for their work. That was the end of Brazilian Octopus.

Nearly five decades after its first release, with original copies having almost vanished off the face of Earth, now is the time for making this beauty available again.

DMX Crew – You Exist
Friday, January 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DMX Crew – You Exist

Image: 1601821 Hypercolour proudly announce the latest long player from UK stalwart, Ed DMX AKA DMX Krew, the visionary British electronic producer who has been responsible for a slew of excellent releases for labels like Rephlex, Spectral Sound, Permanent Vacation and his own Breakin’ Records and Fresh Up Records since the mid 1990s.

‘You Exist’ is DMX Krew’s debut appearance on Hypercolour, and as expected the record features nine tracks of beautifully crafted, melodic electronic sounds. From the opener ‘Spiritual Encounter’, DMX sets the tone perfectly with oodles of pitch perfect synth riffs and driving drums, working his way through snappy and bright pop moments like ‘Hard Copy’ to more melancholic, darker cuts like ‘Computational Paradigm Shift’. DMX breezes in and out of electro techno territory to more contemplative IDM vibes with ease, testimony to the guy’s talent (that’s also seen him wear the hat of over 10 aliases throughout his career to date).

‘You Exist’ captures a very true and genuine musical form, produced and delivered with love from one of the scene’s unsung heroes, and makes it a great companion piece to another Hypercolour released album from similar stock (take your pick from Luke Vibert’s 2014 ‘Ridmik’ album or his latest Kerrier District LP). A consistent and engaging album then from DMX Krew that will pleasure the ear buds of discerning listeners everywhere.

The Captain Presents – PronoMatt & Tommyboy
Saturday, June 29th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Captain Presents – PronoMatt & Tommyboy

Image: 1581954 The Captain aka Fab Samperi is one of the hottest names in Ghetto Funk right now and we are proud to welcome him to Breakbeat Paradise Recordings to drop a monster 5-track vinyl. He’s teamed up with two countrymen who share his passion for funky upbeat drum ‘n’ bass groovers – the Italian producers PhonoMatt & Tommyboy. If this wasn’t enough they’ve teamed up with another ghetto funk heavy weightier: BadboE who’s dropping a killer remix on the flip side of this EP.

Expect something a little different from the usual BBP business but as always funky as hell and full of attitude. The tempo is closer to drum ‘n’ bass but the street feel and wobbles from ghetto funk makes these jams perfect peak time bangers.

The Captain just recently dropped his first 4-track vinyl on the legendary Ghetto Funk label, which were ripped off the shelves and sold out in less than 2-month time. The Captain has previously released tunes on labels likes Resense, Tremendo & Good Groove and remixed tunes by CMC/Silenta, Ursula 1000, The Sly Players & Dj Love as well as releasing the full length album: Power Bossa on the Agogo label in 2011.

It’s clear that PhonoMatt & Tommyboy is following the footsteps of their Captain and this EP shows a breath of air into the Ghetto Funk scene from a new breed of funky Italian producers.

The usual high quality packaging and graphics are all secondary to a […]
