Zach Witness – Electric Revival: Rise Of An Outkast Nation
Thursday, July 27th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Zach Witness – Electric Revival: Rise Of An Outkast Nation

Image: 1611150 The visionary talents of multi-instrumentalist Zach Witness have sprouted
full life in this world, lending his sonic touch to the bulk of Erykah Badu’s
latest album, But You Caint Use My Phone (Motown Records). This
project was brought to life with Erykah Badu at the Badudio and World
Witness Studios in Zach Witness’ hometown, Dallas, Texas. This project
put him on a unique trajectory, harnessing his intricately designed fusion
productions into the periphery of an entirely new audience around the
world. His forthcoming debut EP, Electric Revival: Rise of an Outkast
Nation, is the first project to find the light of day after this expansion
phase, initially created as a birthday gift to Zach Witness’ friend and
collaborator, André 3000.
The catalyst behind the creation of Electric Revival has a very specific
initiation point. During the recordings for But You Caint Use My Phone,
Erykah Badu called on André 3000 for collaborative assistance. This
would result in the album’s last track, “Hello,” created at the home studio
Zach Witness has lived in his whole life. This moment in time compelled
Zach Witness to create an offering for André 3000, and this was in the
form of an entire body of music.
Electric Revival takes on the stories of the lives entangled around
society’s most crippling and hopeless of situations. The social and
political intentions of the EP paints a very defined purpose in this context.
Experience the transformative sounds of Zach Witness and his debut
manifesto.

Audio – Make It Happen / Napalm
Wednesday, October 28th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Audio – Make It Happen / Napalm

Image: 1600571 Needing little introduction, and having scored a Beatport number one with latest single ‘Shatterdome’, this fresh cut from Audio yet again reinstates his dominance. Slick and standing with fortress-like tightness, these two sonic slabs of bass bear down on you aggressively. Then again, what can you expect, from one of the most resounding names within the genre, even from his very first output?

‘Make it Happen’ is bulking and rolls forward like a freight train. Snapping between breaks and bass that bulges with power, it’s a muscular number which brings another meaning to ‘dancefloor anthem’. Broken up by interjecting sample, frequently pounding loops of distortion and warbling beat patterns pull you deeper and deeper into the mix. Pausing before ascending yet again into all-out chaos, Audio proves his intimidating production standards are upheld with every release.

Instantly recognisable from the vocal snippet, ‘Napalm’ promises to explode on impact. Detonating crowds at festivals this summer, from Prague’s Let it Roll to stages across Europe, it’s a chunky, clunking record which has already caused devastation across the continent. Distorted and with a warbling, low frequency, prepare to be taken by the synapses into drum & bass’ murkiest waters.

Yet again, Audio demonstrates his unbridled capabilities. Gritting his teeth and once again proving a darker edge to the Ram imprint, this presents one more step towards an Audio LP…

K-Def – Tape Two
Saturday, May 23rd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on K-Def – Tape Two

Image: 1597396 “Sounds like the early 90s,” “Vintage” & “Boom-Bap” are phrases
often used nowadays in an attempt to describe modern music that is
reminiscent of hip-hop’s golden era, more specifically the sound of
late 80’s and early 90s sample based rap. Using those exact phrases
to describe K-Def’s Tape Two instrumental project is fitting on many
levels, not only because the audio on this album fits the description,
but because the tracks contained were actually made during the late
80s / early 90s by an ambitious young man from New Jersey known as
Kevin Hansford pka K-Def. When you listen to these beats, please keep
in mind that these pieces are sourced from an old cassette that was
recently rediscovered. What you hear on this project is actually coming
to you straight from the early 90s via a lost & found beat tape recorded
during Def’s formative years as an artist.
These days a lot of artists attempt to emulate the sound and the style
pioneered by artists like Primo, Rza, Large Pro and yes even K-Def, but
their intentions are usually more retro than real. Veteran hip-hop producer
K-Def has been “making beats” for well over 25 years, way before the
term “boom bap” was ever coined and before any rap producer opted to
make instrumental albums. Back then, bulky machines like the SP1200
and MPC60 were used not because of their “gritty” sonic texture, but
instead simply because those particular samplers offered new and
innovative ways to manipulate sounds, making production accessible to
folks who otherwise might not have access to a full band or recording
studio. Those 12 & 16 bit sampling behemoths allowed guys like K-Def
and Primo to combine and reprogram audio sourced from vinyl records
into thundering new instrumental compositions. Thanks in part to his
musical background as a DJ & Dancer, combined with a little bit of
networking, K almost instantly went from dreamer to doer. The story
goes something like this: in the early 90s, K-Def created a handful of
beat tapes that started to circulate the NY/NJ area via his network of
MCs, quickly reaching the ears of production mastermind Marley Marl.
Def’s big break came when his cousin passed a tape to Marley, who
immediately recognized that this particular young man from Jersey
had the “skills to pay the bills” as they used to say. Marley wasted no
time making the drive from NY to NJ, arriving straight at K’s front door,
offering him the role of in-house producer at the legendary legendary
house of hits! The rest is history

Image: 1592720 The Experimental Tropic Blues Band presents “The Belgians”. This project, or experience, is an exploration through sound and image of the singularity, absurdity and surrealism that shape this country as big as confetti! With this record, The Tropics offer you a course on Belgian history, fundamentally rock & roll and under pressure. We definitely forget about the famous “Belgian compromise”: the songs are raw and the lyrics straightforward! This fourth album, called “The Belgians”, includes eleven tracks, or eleven investigated facets of Belgium. The approaches and themes are popular, off-the-wall and uninhibited…In bulk, you’ll get a caricature of national frustrations through its national pride, namely mussels and waffles. The band will also gratify you with a rock & roll exquisite corpse, written without any control, without even calling on reason or aesthetics. You’ll then go from surprises to surprises, from unnatural love to disobedience as proof of the authenticity, from people gathering around a dance until the perversity of the consumer society. To complete the cocktail: the Belgian hero in a looser version with no ambition, along with disillusioned citizens.A true ‘Belgian mix’ that will lift up your spirit!
As a reminder, The Experimental Tropic Blues Band is made of tireless globetrotters who have been raging on the stages of Europe and the USA for more than ten years, with the same passion and unpredictability. Their last album, released in 2012 (recorded and produced by Jon Spencer), was critically acclaimed by the press as well as their fans, and allowed them to be part of TRAX, the musical  TV show of Arte.

Poldoore – The Day Off (Picture Disc)
Wednesday, March 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Poldoore – The Day Off (Picture Disc)

Image: 1587168 Cold Busted returns to familiar label artist Poldoore (born Tom Schillebeeckx) to release his new album, The Day Off. It features some talented guests, including the mysterious Maverick, emcee duo The 49ers, American blues singer Bodhilynn, and trumpeter Will Magid.

Based out of Belgium, Poldoore started producing at an early age and eventually his potential was realized by Cold Busted’s offer to release his debut L.A.X. EP . From there the pairing has only grown stronger. Poldoore’s sound is about good vibes, creating warm atmospheres that blend funk, soul, lounge, and reggae with punchy drum breaks.

Among the album’s many highlights is “Morning Glory,” featuring a rocksteady beat with bright arpeggiated synths at select moments, with the bulk of the track carried by wailing guitars and chopped up blues vocals. “Ahhh Yeah” enters like a walk in the park with bright keys, lovely strings, and funky rhythms, the results of rearranging an original sample into suitable bits and pieces with a little help from Maverick. “Heard It All Before” has Bodhilynn’s soulful vocal hook accompanied by The 49ers’ rhymes and a key-based beat with soaring highs. “Natural High” elicits psychedelic vibes with plenty of effects, a sporadic, low electric shock, and interwoven, layered guitar play. “Unconditional” uses a Motown-like backing track beefed up by a strong kick and slow, sizzling hats, cymbals, and snares. Midway through “Unconditional” Poldoore is joined by Will Magid’s saucy, bayou-evoking horn solo. “Call It A Day” is a dreamy funk affair full of shimmery, echoing melodies, teetering guitars, forward-staggering key stabs, and a stand out bass line.

The Day Off is full of sonic sunshine, exactly the kind of sonic weather fit for enjoying what little time there is for leisure and much appreciated in today’s musical climate.

Kool Keith – Love And Danger
Thursday, August 1st, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kool Keith – Love And Danger

Image: 1582401 Now on vinyl! Kool Keith’s critically acclaimed solo album Love & Danger produced by Dj Junkaz Lou and featuring Def Squad brainiac MC Keith Murray, and NYC’s groundbreaking combo Megabone.

An original member of New York’s new-school pioneers the Ultramagnetic MCs, Keith Thornton is best known as a solo rapper. His signature styles stream-of-consciousness lyrical flow and complex vocals, two skills that earn him a perennial nod from the underground hip-hop community. The average Kool Keith album is peppered with bizarre, disjointed, even delusional or disassociated themes, concepts, and references. Nearly all of his albums incorporate a satirical dislike for more commercialized strains of hip-hop, as well as major record label scams.
After single-handedly redefining “warped” as the mind and mouth behind the Bronx-based Ultramagnetic MC’s, “Kool” Keith Thornton — aka Rhythm X, aka Dr. Octagon, aka Dr. Dooom, aka Mr. Gerbik — headed for the outer reaches of the stratosphere with a variety of solo projects. A onetime psychiatric patient at Bellevue, Keith’s lyrical thematics remained as free-flowing here as they ever were with the N.Y. trio, connecting up complex meters with fierce, layers-deep metaphors and veiled criticisms of those who “water down the sound that comes from the ghetto.” His own debut single, “Earth People” by Dr. Octagon, was quietly released in late 1995 on the San Francisco-based Bulk Recordings, and the track spread like wildfire through the hip-hop underground, as did the subsequent self-titled full-length released the following year.
Since then, Kool Keith has dropped numerous critically acclaimed and lyrically genius records. Tashan Dorrsett, another concept- driven release from Keith, was released in 2009. Following early 2011 is the “Legend Of Tashan Dorrsett” remix album including remixes and exclusives by Hip-Hop legends Marley Marl, Domingo, Ultrmagnetic’s TR Love, Agallah Don Bishop to name a few. Early 2012, Keith released the single “Anorexic” (labeled as a Ultramagnetic track) and flooded the internet with the hit records New York and The Game Is Free.

Ophir “Kutiman” Kutiel is a 25-year old musician, composer and producer from Tel Aviv. He plays drums, keyboards, guitar and bass, among others and we strongly believe that he will leave his mark in 2007 and beyond.

His music draws influences from afro-beat, psychedelic rock, funk and reggae but in different way than most disciples of Fela and Mr.Brown have done before him. Clever heads may even spot some Special AKA, Chocolate Watchband or the pre-historic drum-machine Sly Stone introduced on “There’s A Riot Goin’ On” on Kutiman’s self-titled first album. But being clever is the last thing Kuti tries to be with his music.

Kuti just plays what he feels and the fact that he is coming from a place far away from New York, LA and London (or wherever the latest musical trend is envolving) is surley one reason why his music shows such a great deal of originality …
