Dead Horse Beats – Young Ruins
Wednesday, September 28th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dead Horse Beats – Young Ruins

Image: 1606630 Patrick Wade, better known as Dead Horse Beats is a producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist living in Montreal, Canada. Since the release of his first album in 2011, Wade has garnered attention for his unique brand of hazy, rhythmic, soul-styled creations, and energetic live spectacles featuring a slough of live instrumentation, electronics and guest performers.

After the release 2015’s acclaimed Single People LP and a brief stint with London’s Black Butter Records, Bad Hopes is the culmination of a new, fully realized sonic direction, inspired by the sounds of the Montreal scene in which DHB is embedded, equal parts glittering R&B, and undeniable deep house inspired soundscapes, fusing fully on Bad Hopes,

Alongside friends and collaborators Frase (vocals on She Said) and Jason Simpkin (additional production and instrumentation throughout) DHB blends his voice and lyrics with bassy grooves, lush synths and sharp, angular percussion into a cohesive, rolling soundscape.

Ill Bill (La Coka Nostra) – The Grimy Awards (Blue Black Splatter)
Thursday, September 12th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ill Bill (La Coka Nostra) – The Grimy Awards (Blue Black Splatter)

Image: 1581545 Includes appearances from H.R. of Bad Brains, A-Trak, El-P, Jedi Mind Tricks, O.C., Cormega, Meyhem Lauren, Q-Unique, Shabazz the Disciple & Lil Fame of M.O.P. and production by DJ Premier, DJ
Muggs, Pete Rock, Large Professor, The Beatnuts, El-P, Ayatollah, MoSS & Ill Bill himself. Ill Bill is a former member of Non Phixion & current member of La Coka Nostra.

Brooklyn native Ill Bill, keystone of critically-lauded luminaries Non Phixion, original member of La Coka Nostra, one-half of Heavy Metal Kings with Vinnie Paz, and prolific solo artist in his own right, announces the release of his most personal and realized album to date, The Grimy Awards, slated to drop February 26th on Uncle Howie/Fat Beats.
Tangential and biographic, the album sees Bill addressing the formative touchstones of his life, offering “what-ifs” and describing historical events, many gruesome, that shaped the suspicious, futurist, political, analytical persona he’s been putting on wax for the better part of three decades. Here he effortlessly enlists a reverent squad of super-notable collaborators, who not only sign their approval but round out a grand Boom-Bap vision sonically and thematically.
It’s imprudent and largely impossible to discuss Brooklyn rap in the last decade without acknowledging Ill Bill who, along with his fellow Non Phixion members, carved out a distinct niche in the hallowed
temple of Brooklyn rap near the turn of the century. Non Phixion’s The Future Is Now is a certifiable classic of the genre, championed by major labels like Warner Brothers and Geffen early on before being released independently on Bill’s own Uncle Howie Records. Rife with political critique and paranoia, the album sits nicely among Behold A Pale Horse-era classics from Company Flow, The Goodie Mob, and Immortal Technique. There’s a comparably dark through-line to his solo and collaborative work since, much of which is heavily informed by years as an avid fan of punk rock and heavy metal (diehards will spot an esoteric Exodus reference in “Paul Baloff”, a standout on this record).
Ill Bill is a cult-rap fixture, an idol to fans across the globe and a direct progenitor of the whatever-wave of New York rap that’s currently en vogue, though there’s a stark difference in his approach. Bill lyrically postulates, provokes, praises and reminisces alternately. The Grimy Awards is as much about what happened in Bill’s tenure on earth thus far as what might have actually happened, and why. It’s extremist in an attempt to overshoot reality and find a spurring medium between what we’re led to believe is the truth, the actual facts, and terrifying potentiality. His prodding is a call to thought, and he uses chronological reference points to frame each verse- but the picture may not always be pretty.

Julien Mier – Out Of The Cloud
Thursday, January 15th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Julien Mier – Out Of The Cloud

Image: 1594750 Out Of The Cloud is some sort of full circle for me. It’s a
disclosure from the last EP when we moved from the house
next to the junkyard and a fabric that made coffins (from the
period I wrote Jane’s Junkyard.) We moved to a village at
the border of the Veluwe (Wenum-Wiesel.) I grew up in a
similar village near the dunes at the other side of the country,
so returning to nature has become a returning point to truly
realize where I come from.
In 2013, my girlfriend and me owned a cat that ran away
from our house next to the junkyard and never got back. After
her disappearing we picked up a brother and sister cat from
our local animal shelter that we called Sketch (named after
the numerous brown, black and red dots and stripes on her
back.) and Storm (as he’s completely black with a couple of
white spots, looking like thunder.) These are the cats that
are featured on the album cover. The week before we would
move to our cabin in the woods, our cat Sketch got injured.
She crawled under a barbed wire fence and receiving a
serious injury. During her recovery we moved and nearly
escaped from our villain landlord that destroyed our mailbox
and stole our mail that was in it. It was a dark period that can
be found on Jane’s Junkyard.
This mini-album, being an anchor point for a new timeframe,
started on the yard where we live now. The place is like an
island in a forest with a few other people living on it. It has
been an old rural farm, with plenty of space to grow our
own vegetables and find eggs. We enjoy the company of
two gooses, a horse, a total of 7 cats, 2 guard dogs and a
crazy amount of chickens walking over the place. Out Of The
Cloud is the transition between leaving all the bad things
behind and moving on. Finally in nature again, finding peace,
tranquility and balance in our lives. The isolation confronted
me a lot for who I am. This mini-album is a metaphor for
escaping and leaving super dense urban areas and enjoying
and accepting the great wide open.

Kiddus I – Rockers: Graduation In Zion 1978-1980
Friday, November 7th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kiddus I – Rockers: Graduation In Zion 1978-1980

Image: 1592324 Dub Store Records presents Kiddus I – Rockers: Graduation In Zion 1978-1980. Recordings by the legendary Roots singer Kiddus I, who appeared in the “Rockers” film, are released for the first time. “Rockers: Graduation in Zion” is the first release in a series of three albums that will bring to the public the majority of his existing recordings.

Kiddus I is the mysterious figure singing at the start of the film Rockers. A graduate of Ras Michael’s Sons Of Negus, a key member of The Wailers milieu, and a Black Ark artist, his recordings – centred on the Roots Reggae period – are marked by the openness of their musical horizons, and a striking originality and integrity. (Also during this era he was a key voice raised in the Jamaican music industry against political oppression.)

Yet Kiddus I’s disdain for careerism has held him back from the spotlight – as so many people in Jamaican music will tell you. Now, this revelatory, comprehensive retrospective will surely confirm his place amongst the all-time greats of Reggae music.

This compilation consists of every single recorded at Lee Perry’s Black Ark between 1978 and 1980 and unreleased sound sources recorded at Tuff Gong. The best sessions of the most accomplished international Reggae musicians are unveiled for the first time in twenty years.

Comes with liner notes and Japanese obi strip. Available on CD and 2xLP.

Various – Kev Beadle Presents Private Collection 2
Thursday, August 14th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Kev Beadle Presents Private Collection 2

Image: 1589946 Kev Beadle is back with Private Collection Vol.2 continuing to share his uncompromising record collection and making accessible music that never really received a truly wide audience. Real jazz in the ‘70s and ‘80s had a hard time commercially, with the majors downgrading their investment in the music and concentrating on safe reissues, more easily accessible fusion, and areas more lucrative than jazz altogether. But at the same time, there was an efflorescence and democratization of the music.

The black nationalist politics of the late ‘60s had registered a profound influence on the consciousness of the United States, and the music was reclaimed for black audiences, with a plethora of community-oriented artists putting out intense, committed, recordings on small independent labels … the ‘private press’, hence the ‘private jazz’ you hold in your hands. Whilst jazz education course began to take off at colleges, and independently-minded community radio DJs would support the music, it rarely had distribution. For many of the tracks here, the main sales would’ve been directly from the performer to the public, at gigs.

Meanwhile, in the UK, where jazz had been part of an underground, cutting-edge youth culture at least as far back as the ‘modernist’ 1950s, a selected group of DJs on the jazz-funk and soul scene that exploded, with countless club-nights and all-dayers, at the end of the ‘70s, started to dig a little deeper for their tunes.

One such was our compiler Kev Beadle, who went from being a punter on the scene to a prime mover-and-shaker. Kev attended all the important jazz-dance nights that sprang up in pub backrooms like The Horseshoe and Soho dives like The Wag (where he would soon begin a residency himself). Kev was very much involved with propagating the music and expanding the scene with his promotion at The Belvedere in Richmond, and then, most famously, the afternoon sessions at Dingwalls alongside Bob Jones and Gilles Peterson. He was also involved in the early days of the Southport Weekender, where he now has a major role as programmer of its Beat Bar room.

Kev’s expertise was in demand with record companies: he compiled a series culled from the Argo/Cadet archives for Charly (mostly funky soul-jazz) as well as an important retrospective of Terry Callier, and jazz-funk and soul from the Capitol vaults for Blue Note.

Many of the tunes we present here first got an airing outside of their home states at those legendary club sessions, where the music changed from its earlier emphasis on hard-bop and bossa to modal, spiritual and ‘cosmic’ jazz. It’s fair to say few of their creators probably ever imagined they were making dancefloor hits, but Kev and his DJ contemporaries blazed a trail there that the music is still registering.

These tunes were rarely found outside of the hands of a few enterprising record-dealers, specialist record shops, and latterly, internet auctions. Kev Beadle’s desire to push the boat out musically led him to most of these tunes two decades ago, but for most listeners, the music will be experienced as upfront and progressive.

It’s an uncompromising collection, making accessible music that has never really received the truly wide audience it deserves highlighting a range of artists representing yet another chapter in black America’s fascinating musical history.

Key Selling Points
• Compiled by Kev Beadle – one of the UK’s original jazz dance DJs
• Also responsible for compiling other great compilations including the Capitol Rare series for Blue Note and Argo/Cadet Grooves series for Charly Records
• A collection of some of the rarest independent underground jazz, fusion and latin tracks from 70’s and 80’s
• Contains classic tracks played at legendary jazz dance venues like Jaffas, Electric Ballroom, The Wag and Dingwalls

Express Rising – Express Rising
Thursday, October 10th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Express Rising – Express Rising

Image: 1581779 A decade ago, Dante Carfagna issued a somewhat anonymous LP under the Express Rising heading. That self-titled affair went in and out of print before 2003’s summer gave way to fall, thanks in part to its release by the frustratingly obscure Memphix label, but thanks more to how it broke new ground for the instrumental rap generation’s interest in the sub-sub-basement of record mining.

The album’s blurry boreal cover captured Carfagna’s mysterious persona. Though he’s been attached to such seminal compilations as Chains and Black Exhaust, a grip of Eccentric Soul titles, and the recent electronic soul collection Personal Space–and though his signature “Records I barely like but maybe you will” approach to writing helped build the Wax Poetics brand–Dante remains a tough man to pin down. He doesn’t even have a working doorbell.

Which may be a good thing, as he recorded his second album in the middle room of his third floor walk-up in Chicago’s Dog Patch neighborhood. A notorious homebody, Carfagna cut much of this second self titled LP after a long nights of Camel filters and bottled New Glarus—while watching his neighbors departure for morning straight-world commutes. Reaching back to 2008 and an Akai four track, these 11 songs break from the foraging tradition employed by Dante’s debut, swapping out breakbeats and samples for guitar, Wurlitzer, banjo, steel guitar, synthesizer, and an arcane drum machine.
