But the struggle she’s been through has made her more than a singer. Nicole Wray is an artist. When talking about Queen Alone, […]

Sunny & The Sunliners – Smile Now, Cry Later (BF RSD)

will go to The Greater Houston Community Foundation to help with relief for areas of
Texas that were affected by Hurricane Harvey
When it comes to living legends in the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than vocalist,
songwriter and bandleader Sunny Ozuna. Born and raised in San Antonio, where he still resides, Sunny became a star right out of high school in the late ‘50s and
hasn’t looked back in the six decades since.
After releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in Spanish and English), Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a
teenager. His classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal.
As a logical next step after Big Crown’s excellent (and Sunny-approved) Mr. Brown Eyed Soul compilation from September, the label has started digging into the
vaults of Sunny’s Key-Loc Records label to unearth some legit soul classics – which are hard to find even in San Antonio, and clean originals will cost you a pretty
penny if you ever luck into one – and have not been on vinyl since the late ‘60s. Each has been remastered and includes original album art.
First up is Smile Now, Cry Later, a 12-song platter which first hit in 1966. As with most Sunny LPs, this is a mix of soulful originals – most notably, “Smile Now,
Cry Later” and “Put Me In Jail” – and provocative, wide-ranging covers. Cases in point on the tributes side of this great album include the Sam & Dave shouter
“Hold On I’m Comin’”, “Forever,” made famous by both the Marvelettes and Marvin Gaye, and a song that Sunny performs to this day, and the ‘60s Louis Prima
crooner special “Just A Gigolo.”
The band is tight, the sound is honest, the vocals are dusky and deep, and the album is an undeniable soul and Texas music classic, ready to be discovered by a
whole new generation of music fans. Dive in and be ready for a permasmile, thanks to that patented Sunny sound.

Sunny & The Sunliners – The Missing Link (BF RSD)

Each has been remastered and includes original album art.
Second in the reissue series is The Missing Link, a 10-cut, all instrumental album, and the tracklist is a wild ride indeed. Ranging from hip soul – James Brown’s
“Soul Pride,” The Inclines’ Muscle Shoals groover “Pressure Cooker,” and the Meters classic “Cissy Strut” – to a wide swath of ‘60s Texas Latin party essentials (“Uno,” “Rosita Bonita” and “La Pecosita”), the Sunliners are in top form all throughout. It won’t take much to envision a San Antonio backyard BBQ in the early ‘70s with this long player spinning in the background, on repeat.
Instrumental party albums were all the rage back when this hit in the late ‘60s, and Sunny Ozuna and crew show here that they could groove with the best of them. Throw it on, break out the back deck smoker, and let the good tunes roll.

Sunny & The Sunliners – Mr. Brown Eyed Soul
Friday, October 13th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sunny & The Sunliners – Mr. Brown Eyed Soul

Image: 1611255 When it comes to living legends in the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than soul vocalist and Mexican-American songwriter and bandleader Sunny Ozuna. He became a star right out of high school in the late ‘50s and hasn’t looked back in the six decades since.
Among countless other honors and notable achievements, Sunny was the first Latino artist to appear on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” (in 1963). Songs like “Put Me In Jail,” “Talk To Me,” “Should I Take You Home,” “My Dream” and “Smile Now, Cry Later” still bring crowds to their feet throughout the Southwest and California and around the world at “oldies” and “lowrider soul” events. And after releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in Spanish and English), Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a teenager. His classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal.
This new compilation on Brooklyn’s acclaimed Big Crown label is a lovingly curated selection of songs from the years 1966 to 1972. All compositions were originally released on Sunny’s Key-Loc label, formed after his national star had been established, so he could have control of his own musical destiny. With Sunny hits – a mix of originals and some great covers thrown in Mr. Brown Eyed Soul is an excellent celebration of Sunny’s amazing body of work, and a perfect introduction for newcomers.
Produced in full collaboration and cooperation with Ozuna himself, the CD and LP packaging includes liner notes by Texas Music scholar and archivist Ramon Hernandez, and features dozens of rare photos provided by Sunny himself.

El Michels Affair & The Shacks – Shadow Boxing/Iron Maiden
Saturday, August 26th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on El Michels Affair & The Shacks – Shadow Boxing/Iron Maiden

Image: 1611664 Following up on the smashing success of El Michels Affair’s Return To The
37th Chamber, EMA drops one more 45 for the collectors.
The A side is the crushing cover of the Wu classic “Shadowboxin” off GZA’s
cinematic masterpiece Liquid Swords. El Michels Affair takes the tune and
makes it their own with dancing guitar licks, floating organ notes, and their
signature heavy drums.
The B side is a treat for the fans, a non album cut, they cover Ghostface’s
“Iron Maiden”, the tune that opened up and set the tone for his debut classic
Ironman. El Michels smashes this one with a frantic off beat intro that drops
into a heavy duty cover of the tune. The inimitable studio prowess of
Michels is higlighted all over this track in the nuances and arrangements.
Play it loud, and also smoke something and play it in your headphones.

Sunny & The Sunliners – Mr. Brown Eyed Soul
Friday, August 11th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sunny & The Sunliners – Mr. Brown Eyed Soul

Available from 22.09.2017

Lee Fields & The Expressions – Never Be Another You / Lover Man
Friday, June 2nd, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lee Fields & The Expressions – Never Be Another You / Lover Man

Image: 1610402 Big Crown Records is proud to present another killer two sider pulled from Lee Fields
& The Expressions instant classic “Special Night”. With Lee touring the world from
sold out show to sold out show supporting his album, we give the DJs and collectors
another must have 45.
The A side “Lover Man” is equal parts rough and smooth. The production and the
band come off with a thunderous backing track that takes it’s time to get to full sail
while Lee lays down some tell it like it is lyrics. Fields comes to the microphone with
the confidence only a man with his track record could putting down what life is like
with him if the woman he is after just let’s it be that way.
The B side “Never Be Another You” finds Lee & The Expressions taking another turn
on the formula their success has been built on. An unorthodox track to find on a soul
album made to fit perfectly, once again pushing the aesthetics of analog soul further
into the present. Lee confesses his love and appreciation for his woman walking the
fine line of vulnerability and strength. Available from 23.06.2017

El Michels Affair – Return To The 37th Chamber
Friday, May 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on El Michels Affair – Return To The 37th Chamber

Image: 1608954 The wait is over, Return To The 37th Chamber is El Michels Affair’s highly anticipated follow up to 2009’s underground cult classic Enter
the 37th Chamber. Churning out classic records since then for the likes of Lee Fields, The Arcs, The Shacks, and tons more, it is clear that
EMA’s signature sound is stronger & sharper than ever.
This time, in addition to re-interpreting the Wu compositions for a live band, EMA pays homage to the production and sonic fog that
makes a RZA beat so recognizable. Producer and bandleader Leon Michels recorded the album completely analog, sometimes hitting 6
generations of tape before it was ready for mixing, giving the Return to The 37th Chamber it’s own hazy sound. Adding to the unique
fidelity, the record is laced with psychedelic flourishes, “John Carpenter” synths, heavy metal guitars, triumphant horns, and traditional
Chinese instruments that make up for the lack of the Wu’s superlative vocals. From start to finish it’s a dark trip that walks the line
between RZA’s timeless hip-hop aesthetic and the cinematic soul EMA has become known for.
El Michels Affair tackles some classics like 4th Chamber and Wu Tang Aint Nuthin to Fuck Wit, as well as some deeper cuts like Ol Dirty
Bastard’s Snakes, Raekwon’s Verbal Intercourse, and Shaolin Brew, Wu-Tang’s contribution to the St. Ide’s Hip Hop endorsement
campaign from 1994. This time El Michels brings some of the Big Crown family along for the ride. Lee Fields handles vocal duties on
Snakes and is joined by Shannon Wise of The Shacks for their version of Tearz, which pays as much homage to the Wendy Rene sample
as it does to the Wu-Tang Clan. Lady Wray makes an appearance on the cover of Method Man’s hit, All I Need, lending her vocal prowess
to what gave the Wu one of their biggest hits of all time. Interspersed throughout the record are some original interludes that are like the
“rug that ties the room together,” giving Return To The 37th Chamber a cinematic narrative that makes it a proper El Michels Affair record
and not just a collection of covers.
From the music to the presentation, this album is a perfect example of what can only be achieved through diversity. The end result is as
much a kaleidoscope of influences and multiculturalism as the city it was recorded in. El Michels Affair is once again, “sounding out the
city” that raised them, pulling elements of art and culture from across the country and around the globe to create an album truly unique
in it’s own right.

Tracklisting
1. 4th Chamber
2. Iron Man
3. Shaolin Brew
4. Pork Chop Express
5. Snakes feat. Lee Fields
6. Drums For Sale

9. Tearz feat. Lee Fields and The Shacks

The Demands – Say It Again / Let Me Be Myself
Wednesday, April 12th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Demands – Say It Again / Let Me Be Myself

Image: 1609705 Big Crown Records is proud to present the reissue of this 45 from The Demands.
Hailing from Dallas, Texas, The Demands were originally called The Fabulous Furys in college
and switched to The Demands in May of 1969 to play a string of gigs in South Carolina for the
summer. They cut the tunes for this single in 1973 with legendary North Texas engineer Phil
York, originally pressed on Clem Records, original copies of this Northern Soul burner change
hands for upwards of 600 bucks in good condition. The Demands had a moment of on screen
fame in ’73 appearing in the Blaxsploitation film “Fox Style” as the house band at an outdoor
fashion show. Band leader/founder Melvin Clemmons passed his bass duties to his brother
around ’79 so he could run his own nightclub and The Demands kept gigging until around ’89
when they disbanded.
Side A Say It Again is an up Northern Soul number equal parts hi energy and good vibes. A
sureshot for the soul parties, and a very welcome opportunity to put this obscure tune into collections.
Side B’s Let Me Be Myself is a smash of a ballad really showcasing a different side of the
groups writing and performing abilities. The sweet soul folks are in for a treat on this one, sure
to make it to all the lowrider enthusiasts mixes. Available from 05.05.2017

Sunny & The Sunliners – Should I Take You Home/My Dream
Wednesday, March 8th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sunny & The Sunliners – Should I Take You Home/My Dream

Image: 1609136 Big Crown Records is proud to present this killer two sider reissue from Sunny & The Sunliners.
Sunny Ozuna, who formed his band, Sunny & The Sunliners, in the early 60’s, is a true legend in the history of not just Chicano music, but American music. Sunny “Mr. Brown Eyed Soul” Ozuna is highly regarded as one of the architects of the sweet soul sound that has been comped on countless “Lowrider Oldies” collections, and his music has been pouring out of 1964 Chevy Impalas since, well, 1964. Side A’s “Should I Take You Home” is one of his flagship tunes that embodies everything that makes Sunny’s music so appealing. A mid tempo masterpiece that is as cool and swaggy as it is sweet and innocent. In his honeyed voice, that’s equal parts Little Wille John and Frank Sinatra, Sunny tells the tale of young love and it’s inherent defiance with lines like “there’s no excuse that she would understand, so when I take you home hold me by the hand”. When we asked Sunny about the tune he described it as “a very young thing, a cute thing”. There is undoubtedly something equal parts nostalgic and romantic about a young man puffing his chest out to authority for the love of his girl. It’s this blend of doo wop styled lyrics, B side soul ballad aesthetic, and Tejano vibes that makes this one of the biggest Chicano penned low rider tunes out there.
Side B finds Sunny covering the Harvey Averne Classic “My Dream”. It’s another perfect example of the distinctive blend of Tejano music and American soul that makes Sunny & The Sunliners so unique.
To say we are obsessed with the music of Sunny & The Sunliners would be to put it lightly. We have been working on a proper reissue project focusing on the for their music for a few years now and the full compilation will be out in 2017. Available from 31.03.2017

Lady Wray – Underneath My Feet/Guilty (Cold Version)
Wednesday, March 8th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lady Wray – Underneath My Feet/Guilty (Cold Version)

Image: 1609137 Following up on the success of Lady Wray’s solo debut album Queen Alone, we are
proud to give you another 45 offering, this time showing another side of Nicole.
Known worldwide for her early career as a Hip Hop / R&B singer, then more recently
for her more matured Soul inspired writing, the A side of this one “Underneath My
Feet” shows just how hard it is to put Lady Wray in a box. If you haven’t seen her live
show, you may have no idea that she has a healthy bad ass Rock and Roll side to her,
commanding crowds with a raucousness that likens Betty Davis. Underneath My Feet
is a tough blend of glam rock drums and guitar stabs that Nicole takes to like a fish to
water. A self proclaimed voodoo woman, putting a spell on the listener, warning all of
her unbridled power.
The B side is the heart wrenching Guilty, a song Wray wrote to cope with the
incarceration of her brother. One listen and it is impossible to doubt the sincerity,
again showing Cole’s songwriting prowess with imagery of no one to cheers with, and
not wanting to experience the comforts of home knowing her brother was locked up in
a cell. A solid 2 sider showing a different side of Lady Wray than she is typically known
for all wrapped up in a beautiful picture sleeve cover. Another Big Crown sureshot. Available from 31.03.2017

Lee Fields & The Expressions – Special Night
Friday, November 25th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lee Fields & The Expressions – Special Night

The Shacks – The Shacks

Image: 1606390 When you listen to the Shacks’ self-titled debut EP, you might imagine that Shannon Wise and Max Shrager are much
older than their respective 18 and 20 years. But when Shannon’s whisper-vocals breeze through the speakers, you hear
the youthfulness of their sound which then in turn explains the fearlessness of their songwriting. Both vaguely familiar
and completely fresh, The Shacks are one of the most interesting NYC bands to surface in a minute.
Since the release of their first single, “Strange Boy,” which they recorded with El Michels Affair, The Shacks have been
compared to 90’s indie icons like Mazzy Star, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Broadcast. As good as those bands are, you
wouldn’t find a single one of their records in Max and Shannon’s music collection. All these bands are drinking from
the same well, just 20 years apart.
Highlights from The Shacks EP include a cover of the Ray Davies-penned “Strange Effect,” which Shannon sings as if
it were written for her, giving the song an unnerving edge that’s way more interesting than Dave Berry’s tepid original.
Also included on the EP is “Orchids,” one of Leon Michels and Max Shrager’s first co-productions, recorded at the
legendary Diamond Mine studios. “Orchids” is a truly original piece of music that showcases The Shacks’
adventurousness in the studio. “Left It With the Moon” is a lo-fi lullaby written by Shannon and recorded to 4 track
cassette at Max’s home studio in Princeton, NJ. And “Hands In Your Pockets” features the Frightnrs rhythm section
laying down a pitch-perfect rocksteady backing track behind Shannon’s deadpan delivery a la Jane Birkin.
The Shacks’ full-length LP is due early 2017 on Big Crown Records. Stay tuned for more.

Paul & The Tall Trees’ Album “Our Love In The Light” erscheint via Big Crown Records, dem Nachfolgelabel von Truth & Soul Records aus Brooklyn, New York, welches Leon Michels (El Michels Affair, The Arcs, Lee Fields, etc.) zusammen mit Ex-T&S-Labelmanager DJ Akalepse gegründet hat. 79,5 – Terrorize My Heart
Tuesday, September 13th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on 79,5 – Terrorize My Heart

Image: 1606394 Big Crown is proud to present the debut single from 79.5 “Terrorize My Heart”. A-SIDE: TERRORIZE MY HEART / B-SIDE: DISCO DUB BY JENS JUNGKURTH /
Hard to categorize, easy to love, 79.5 has been making tons of noise around New York City for the past year. With three lead vocalists, Kate, Nya, and Piya and a band that pulls influence from every corner of a record store, it’s no wonder they are already taking
the scene by storm. They are an act that gets put on as an opener and shortly there after is asked by the venue to do a month long
residency. That residency leads them to a full page write up in The New Yorker before they even have a single out. The long and
short of it is that 79.5 wins over the listeners wherever they play with an infectious energy. Between the arrangements of bandleader
Kate Mattison and the prowess of all the players, their sets run a gamut of energies and tempos, whether breaking it down to a
capella, turning it up to disco, or mastering the middle, they run the groove, and the crowd follows suit. Take all of that and put it
in the studio with Big Crown’s own Leon Michels on production duties and you get a record we can’t wait to put out in the world, a
record on which every song was recorded live to tape in one take.
“Terrorize My Heart”, a tune leaving no room for gray, finds the ladies of 79.5 walking the line between vulnerability and forthrightness. Setting out with admonishments of love and infatuation that are checked by the bluntness of women who’ve lived in the Big
Apple for years, “is it her or is it me, that’s how it’s gotta be”. A smashing rhythm section covered in punching rhodes chops, flute
parts, and dubbed out reggae rhythm guitar sets the perfect vibe for the ladies to trade off leads and come back together in three
part harmonies: All the while taking the whole tune from half time to double time.
The B side, coined the Disco Dub mixed by Jens Jungkurth, finds Michels’ production taking “Terrorize My Heart” from the change
where it goes to four on the floor and lacing it with drums and a clap track that absolutely pushes this tune over the edge into the
realm of dancefloor banger. Tombstones fall over, the earth cracks open, and dead people get up and dance when this comes on…

Billy The Kid – Pullin’ On My Heartstrings

Image: 1606080 “Pullin’ On My Heartstrings” is the new single from New York-based
vocalist and producer Billy the Kid. The follow-up to his 2015 debut
single, “Save a Little Love for a Rainy Day,” “Heartstrings” was
recorded and mixed on an 8-track tape machine and showcases
Billy’s refined production skills, with compositions relying heavily on
the sound of the Maestro Rhythm King drum machine, Farfisa organ,
and piano. Falsetto vocals and a lush string section round out the
arrangements and harken back to an era when soul 45s were king.
Composed of members from The Shacks, Sharon Jones & The DapKings and Charles Bradley’s Extraordinaires, The Soulful Saints
serve as the perfect backing band for these vocal features and they
shine on the Allen Toussaint-inspired instrumental cut, Hit and Run.

• Two soulful vocal features with influences ranging from Timmy Thomas to Brian Wilson
• All songs written by Billy The Kid (member of Charles Bradley’s Extraordinaires)
• All songs mixed by Max Shrager of Big Crown Records’The Shacks

Lee Fields – Special Night Pt.1

Image: 1605887 Big Crown is proud to present the new single from Lee Fields & The Expressions “Special Night”.

Class is in session and all the youngins out there shaking a tail feather and playing dress up are about to be schooled by the ageless, timeless, and always present, Mr. Lee Fields.

Special Night is the latest offering from a man whose career has spanned 50 years and as Oliver Wang of NPR once said, “In a curious case of musical evolution, the older Fields becomes, the closer he gets to perfecting the sound of soul that he grew up with as a young man”. Special Night is no exception.

An epic 6 minute jam split into parts one and two on the 7″, Special Night is a story of love and loneliness told from the perspective of a man with extreme life experience and deep wisdom. The tune is the perfect storm of production duties handled by Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck alongside the inimitable musicianship of The Expressions, and recorded at the legendary Diamond Mine, Special Night is in the humble opinion of the Big Crown team, one of the greatest pieces of soul music Lee has put to record thus far.

Lady Wray – Queen Alone
Friday, August 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lady Wray – Queen Alone

This is sure to be in every breakbeat enthusiasts box. Max Shrager – Thoughts Of You
Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Max Shrager – Thoughts Of You

Image: 1604920 Big Crown records is proud to present Max Shrager’s debut EP “Thoughts Of You”. This is a collection of songs Max recorded over the past 7-8 years, at the ripe young of 20, it’s clear
Max was born for this. Now dedicated to his band The Shacks, he spends most of his time focusing on writing and recording for their upcoming full length due out on Big Crown in 2017.
These songs are what he calls “the best of everything he has recorded up to that point”. 6 songs on a beautiful 10 picture sleeve EP, another Big Crown sureshot.

SIDE A:
Sophia
Thoughts Of You
Silver
SIDE B:
Girls Of The Galaxy
Train Song
You’re Still There

From Max:
Each song on this record represents a period of my life. Listening to them brings me back to the experiences that inspired them, like a smell that causes a flood of memories.

“Sophia”
I wrote “Sophia” in a piano rehearsal room at my high school. It started with those first two chords, and I just kept going because the harmonic movement was making sense. I came up with the chorus a few minutes before we cut the rhythm track. Tom Brenneck got excited about this one early on, which was very encouraging.

“Thoughts of You”
This one was written the summer I moved to New York City. I thought of it as a country ballad as I was writing it. It ended up having some interesting rhythms and flavors. My grandmother came downstairs to my parent’s basement as I was recording the guitar, and she was in to it.

“Silver”
I bought a 12 string Martin guitar at First Flight music and brought it to school. I ended up skipping class and sitting in the park, working on a song idea that came to me the night before. My new girlfriend had given me a silver ring, which I put in my pocket. It got all scratched up, among the coins, which made me feel guilty and provided the inspiration for this song.

“Girls of the Galaxy”
This one was really fun to record. It’s very much about the production for me, which I did with Homer Steinweiss. Listen closely for the Spanish radio crosstalk at the end.

“Train Song”
This tune is about the train ride from New Jersey to New York City that I must’ve taken a thousand times. There’s also some stuff about a trip to Las Vegas, where my dad and I walked miles out of the city on a dusty highway and ended up at a nuclear testing museum.

“You’re Still There”
This is a love song that was inspired by a specific feeling I had one night in Atlantic City. The feeling was so deep and unique that this song just poured out of me at the piano. The drums were recorded by putting the microphone under a ceramic pot. Available from 22.07.2016

Soul Explosives – Tryin To Get Down / Ain’t No Sunshine
Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Soul Explosives – Tryin To Get Down / Ain’t No Sunshine

Image: 1604922 A-SIDE: TRYIN’ TO GET DOWN
B-SIDE: AIN’T NO SUNSHINE

Big Crown Records is proud to present a reissue of the highly sought-after, very rare, and only
release by Texas funk band, The Soul Explosives.
Active in 1971 and 72, The Soul Explosives were a high school group from Kingsville, TX led
by high school senior Skip Frazier. Their main goal was to play a neighborhood know as
the”The Cut” in nearby Corpus Christ, where there were a number of Soul & R&B clubs.
They paid for the recording and pressing of the 45 which was done by a tiny local Tejano
studio/label, Bormeh. Copies of the record were given to friends and sold at shows. In ’72 Skip
decided to leave the group to pursue his college studies and they disbanded not long after.
The A Side “Tryin To Get Down” is a lo-fi funk gem with all the makings of an underground
classic. Driving drums and blown out vocals somewhere between encouraging and liberating
are sure to peak funk fans ears.
The B Side, a absolutely smashing cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine”, is nothing short of a must
have. The Soul Explosives nearly instrumental cover might just be the toughest version on a
45. Another Big Crown sureshot. Available from 15.07.2016

Paul & The Tall Trees – The Little Bit Of Sunshine / Once In A While
Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Paul & The Tall Trees – The Little Bit Of Sunshine / Once In A While

Image: 1604921 A-SIDE: ONCE IN A WHILE B-SIDE: THE LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE

Big Crown Records is proud to present the debut single from Paul & The Tall Trees, “Once In A While” b/w “The Little Bit Of Sunshine”. Hailing from Staten Island, Paul Schalda’s music seems to embody the unexpected overlap of The Band’s Americana, Ian MacKaye’s unhinged emotion, and the doo-wop melodies his father, Bill Schalda Sr. (a member of Brooklyn vocal group, The Montereys), raised him on. The first single from his forthcoming full length, produced by Tommy Brenneck, “Once In A While” is a testament to Paul’s sincere and raw emotional song writing. Running the gamut of the forever changing conviction of a man in love, Paul goes from never again to maybe pleading for mercy on his soul. Musically going from a mellow strut to a frantic crescendo carrying the lyrics along for the ups and downs of addiction.
The B Side “The Little Bit Of Sunshine” is the soul tearing admission of defeat and the long road to surrender. Easily interpreted as a story about a disfunctional relationship with a unkind, inconsiderate woman, yet truly a story about Paul’s giving up on a career in music. Available from 08.07.2016

El Michels Affair & The Shacks – Strange Boy / No Surprise
Monday, June 6th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on El Michels Affair & The Shacks – Strange Boy / No Surprise

Image: 1604479 El Michels Affair are back with a 45 of original material that features a new NYC band called The Shacks. The Shacks are made up of the enigmatic Shannon Wise, and studio wunderkind, Max Shrager. Their dreamy, voyeuristic sound was born in Michels’ Queens, NY studio in 2015. And while they describe themselves as a rock band, don’t expect the conventional kind.
The story goes that Max brought Shannon to the studio, where he was playing guitar on a track produced by Leon Michels of El Michels Affair, that needed a vocalist. They put Shannon in the booth to try it out. It was her first time ever recording. Then, in one take, the song “Strange Boy” had a singer who completed the vibe. The Shacks were born.
Side A Strange Boy, sounds like the Five keys met Neil young and cut a record with Jane Birkin – but in english. A fuzzed out, heavy backing track with doo-wop background vocals create a peculiar, but perfect bed for Shannon’s dead pan celebration of her “Strange Boy”, of whom she would gladly “drink the kool aid from his cup”.
Side B, No Surprise, is a perfect blend of El Michels Affair’s hazy, cinematic soul and 60’s pop ala Sonny and Cher.
When this stunning lil two sider was recorded, Shannon was only 16 and Max was 18. Since then, they have made nearly two records of material that will be introduced to the world in the coming year on Big Crown Records. Stay tuned…. Available from 24.06.2016

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band – Jungle Fever / Tender Trap

Image: 1604480 Big Crown Records is proud to present Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band’s Jungle Fever / Tender Trap 7″ single.

With their debut album “55” taking the vinyl world by storm, we wanted to give fans another 7 they couldn’t leave home without. Their cover of The Chakacha’s classic, “Jungle Fever” has been burning up dancefloors since it’s first pressing on Plane Jane Records. BRSB puts the punch in the drums and the one drop in the arrangements, taking the original tune and updating it into something DJs and their audiences are going crazy for. “Tender Trap”, the flip side, starts out with a syncopated intro that will catch the ear of any hip hop fan for a number of reasons, then the tune turns into an all out funk burner, steel pans and guitars taking turns over the driving drums. Another BRSB sureshot. Available from 17.06.2016

Lady Wray – Do It Again / In Love With You
Monday, June 6th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lady Wray – Do It Again / In Love With You

Image: 1604481 Big Crown Records is proud to present Do It Again the first single from Lady
Wray’s new album Queen Alone. The 45 and upcoming album is produced by
Leon Michels and Thomas Brenneck.
Do It Again is a tune addressing the complexities of love. On one hand it’s the
story of a failed relationship, on the other hand it’s the story of a revered
intimacy. Ultimately finding Nicole willing to get back into it regardless of the
consequences. The classic, drum heavy production, paired with Nicole
Wray’s powerhouse vocals will surely have sweet soul enthusiasts and beat
makers stockpiling copies for years to come.
On the B side, In Love, she pleads with her man to give her room to breathe,
let her be herself, and not ruin a good thing. With stripped down drums and
acoustic guitar providing the backdrop, Nicole is front and center, giving
listeners a chance to hear the strength of her voice, a voice and style that is
as rare as it is beautifully familiar. Available from 17.06.2016

Boco – Runnin’ The Mardi Gras / Smile
Monday, June 6th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Boco – Runnin’ The Mardi Gras / Smile

Image: 1604482 Big Crown Records is proud to present the reissue of this uber rare underground cult classic Running The Mardi Gras
by Boco. Those lucky enough to find an original copy are paying upwards of $1000.00 for this truly unique
psych rock / funk gem on 45.
From the title to the sound to the cryptic lyrics “Running the Mardi Gras” seems to confirm all the mystique that
surrounds the southern Louisiana Bayous and Cajun culture. This record is a family affair. It started one morning
when one Mr. Latour, the father of the group, was shaving in the mirror and a song struck him. It was to be about
Mardi Gras, not the beaded revelry of New Orleans familiar to most, but the traditions of rural Louisiana, where one
would “run the Mardi Gras,” going house to house getting home cooking from the neighbors. He would sing the song
every day in the car and the children of the family soaked up the spirit of the song.
Playing and performing was just part of life for the family. Mr. Latour had bought studio equipment for his children to
record on, which he kept in their house. Growing up in the shadow of New Orleans, the Latour children listened to
the sounds of Funk and R&B that came in on the radio, which was the biggest influence on the family projects’ sound.
Together the four Latour children, with the eponymous Boco Latour on lead vocals, and a couple of local musicians
recorded “Running the Mardi Gras” in the Latour home. Feeling that they really had something, the makeshift band
decided to record a b-side. The guitarist had a song he had been working on and they recorded what would become
“Smile” as well. The two songs were pressed under the Laughing Eye label, nothing more than the heading under
which the Latour family released their music, and mostly sold the 45 at gigs around southern Louisiana. The recorded
output under Laughing Eye was understandably limited, but locals still remember well Boco’s powerful voice from her
shows in clubs around the bayous. Boco and George Latour still live around Baton Rouge and continue to make
music and play in the area.

Okonkolo – Rezos

SIDE A:

2. Ochun
SIDE B:
1. Oba
2. Wolenche For Chango

“Puntilla took me to his house, they put me in front of the sacred drums. I kneeled down, I prostrated, and they did a consultation with the sacred drums to see if the spirit of the drum, the Ana,
accepts me as his son.”
This is how Abraham Rodriguez, lead singer of Okonkolo, describes his introduction to the Santeria religion. In the decades that followed, he would become a priest and master drummer, using
these sacred bata drums to bring the Orishas (Santerian gods) down to earth. The Santeria religion endured the transatlantic slave trade from Africa to the solares of Cuba and arrived in New
York by way of Caribbean migrants who sought a better life in the barrios of the Bronx and Brooklyn. This is where Rodriguez met Okonkolo producer and guitarist Jacob Plasse.
“I met Aby in the early 90s, doing salsa gigs over at Plan B in the lower east side,” recalls Jacob Plasse, producer and guitarist for Okonkolo. “After I had played there a couple times he told me
one week I should arrive later, because the first part of the show was going to be different. Well needless to say I came early to see what I wasn’t being included in,” Jacob laughs.
“Abraham was doing a tambor for Chango. I had never seen anything like it. In Cuba I had gone to some amazing tambors, but somehow what Aby was doing was different it was the bata
repertoire but with his own subtle New York doowop thing happening, and in a salsa club no less! It was beautiful and unique, and I wanted to figure out a way to collaborate, even if I had to
wait 10 years”.
Jacob and Aby would continue to do gigs sporadically, but were involved in their own projects, with Aby eventually moving to Florida to do religious work. Years later, a brush with tragedy
brought them together again when Abraham was the victim of a shooting.
“Everyone in the salsa community was stunned and at a loss, praying for him,” Jacob says. “ And I remembered that night in the lower east side, of him calling down the Orishas, and I hoped
I would get the chance to record his music.”
Santeria gave Abraham Rodriquez the strength to recover.
“I had a life and death experience, and by the grace of God, I was able to come back,” Abraham recounts. “When I came out of the hospital, the very next day I went to a guiro (a religious
ceremony) to sing, you know? Even with the staples, and the metal in my lungs, I had to do it. And I would say 80 percent of my recovery has been because of my faith.”
The musical prayers that make up Okonkolo’s debut EP Rezos (Prayers) are some of the most complex and beautiful that any classical tradition has produced. They are also some of the oldest,
addressing Obatala, the creator of the world, Ochun, the goddess of love and beauty, and Chango, God of the drum. Okonkolo is a result of this collaboration – Abrahams soulful voice calling
down the Orishas, the bata drums and voices soaring through the horns and guitars of Plasses’s production. The beauty and otherworldliness of these prayers endures, the rhythms and chants
reimagined in a way that is somehow both ancient and new. Available from 20.05.2016
