Dinosaur L – 24/24 Music
Tuesday, August 15th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dinosaur L – 24/24 Music

Image: 488745 Repress! Dinosaur L is an alias donned by Arthur Russell, a man whose contribution to dance music from the
late seventies and through the eighties was formidable but only quietly acknowledged. His innovative
and left field dance records were way ahead of what people were used to hearing at the time.
He was a cellist who studied classical and Indian music. As well as his great strides in dance music he
was also involved in the New York downtown avant-garde music scene and produced some albums in
a more avant-garde/experimental vein as well as trying his own unique approach to pop. He scored
several hits on the underground New York dance scene at clubs like The Paradise Garage (Larry Levan
was a huge supporter). His biggest tunes, “Go Bang!” and “Is It All Over My Face?” were worldwide
club hits and are still played today as classics. His records have influenced the scene from his first
dance record in 1979 to the present day and his work has been much sampled.
Sadly Arthur died in 1992, but his music lives on and his influence is still felt on the dance music scene,
his tunes still sound great and are still moving many dancers around the world, so his spirit lives on.
Sleeping Bag Records and Traffic Entertainment Group is proud to present Dinosaur L’s “24->24

remixes and edits.

The Jukebox Jam club night began in Summer 2007 as a raucous monthly celebration of authentic US Rhythm & Blues of yesteryear. Two years later, the club’s founder Liam Large linked up with Jazzman to release high-quality, short-run 7″ singles of the often obscure R&B music which the club continues to thrive on. Jazzman had […]

Some people call him a genius, some a tortured artist and for others he was misunderstood; but for many his music is the ultimate tribute to his life that was cut short in 1992. Arthur Russell’s work has been covered, sampled and used as inspiration but what has really driven us to build this project […]

Image: 1612038 Tramp’s Feeling Nice series has positioned itself as a universally accepted essential cultural and historical document of some of the greatest unknown local vernacular American Black music of the sixties and seventies. The Feeling Nice series has been dedicated to filling in the blanks between the more well known cuts of so-called Deep Funk canon and drawing out the relationships and stories behind and between the tunes and the artists, and ultimately creating a dialogue that serves to enlighten and enliven a true anti-racist discussion of American Popular music specifically and of Global human music in general. With Feeling Nice Vol. 4, Tramp continues this important conversation, and having spent over 700 days unearthing a rousing selection across the board, offers it to you, now, as a double LP with full-color label scans, never before seen promo shots, and detailed biographical information – in some cases in the words of the artists themselves!

Believe me when I tell you, Feeling Nice 4 has got it all: Brilliant B-sides: (Donald Ray – “Strut Your Stuff”), Concealed covers: (Combined Forces – “Feelin’ Alright”), Tittyshakers: (Big Bear Revue – “Big Bear”), Dance crazes: (Donnie Sanders – “Shing-A-Ling Baby, Mr. Clean & The Cleansers – “Karate”), Obscure cuts by well known R&B stars: (Frederick Knight – “Steppin Down”), Retro German rave-ups: (Take 5+2 – “Get Your Love”), Weirdo deep funk one-offs: (Moony Moon – “Walking On The Moon”), Killers from the Caribbean: (Al Sinclair – “No That Ain’t Groovy), Basement Jams: (TNT Powerhouse – “Basement Jam”), Most talked-about new discoveries: (Living Funk – “Silver Black Summer Day”), and more and more and more…

As a special incentive for you to be first in line for this freakishly fantastic funk feast, Tramp Records will include a special BONUS 45 of an unpressed acetate of “I FEEL A GROOVE COMIN’ ON” by “SOUTH SIDE” with the first 400 copies of Feeling Nice Vol. 4.

‘Afro Rock Vol. 1’ is one of the most important compilations of heavy original ‘70s
Afro funk and soul to be released in recent years. Originally surfacing on Duncan
Brooker’s indie Kona label in early 2001, the album single-handedly kick-started
the thirst among jazz, funk and soul fans and ‘diggers’ to rediscover lost music
from Africa made during the ‘60s and ‘70s from a time when many countries were
gaining independence and celebrating a Pan-African identity within their music. The
album was one of the frst to reach a far different audience to the traditional ‘world
music’ market and spawned many further projects and labels in its wake. A year
later, the ‘Nigeria 70’ compilation surfaced on Strut and labels like Soundway and
Analog Africa would continue to unearth amazing lost gems from the Motherland.
The album is testament to the determined work of Brooker following several
research trips, especially to East Africa – Kenya and Zaire. It brought to light East
Africa’s fnest funk band, Air Fiesta Matata, led by the recently deceased Steele
Beautttah, ‘The Nigerian James Brown’ Geraldo Pino from Port Harcourt in Nigeria,
and the storming Afro jam ‘Yuda’ by Dackin Dackino, a previously unreleased gem
from Zaire discovered on a discarded reel. The album has remained in?uential
since its release with tracks appearing on other Afro compilations and on TV and
the big screen – Jingo’s ‘Fever’ featured in Kevin McDonald’s 2006 hit flm, ‘Last
King Of Scotland’.
Out of print since 2015, the album is being reissued on Strut in its original form with
the extra dynamite unreleased psychedelic cut by Kenya’s Ishmael Jingo, ‘Keep On
Holding On’ taken from the original master tape. The package features the original
sleeve notes by Duncan Brooker along with new additional notes providing further
background to the album and tracks.

KEY POINTS:
– Groundbreaking African music compilation from 2002, first vinyl reissue since 2015
– includes Jingo’s ‘Fever’ featured in the film ‘Last King Of Scotland’
– Album features rare photo and sleeve notes by compiler Duncan Brooker
– Consistently in-demand album among DJs and fans of African rare grooves

Clipse – Til The Casket Drops
Tuesday, June 13th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Clipse – Til The Casket Drops

Image: 1610503 The contemporary realm of hip hop music can be seen as polarized between two sides, mainstream versus underground, industry versus independent, at a base level
boiled down to catchy sounds & infective hooks over higher quality lyrical content. These elements don’t need to be mutually exclusive, but these days it’s rare to find an
act that can please all sides of the discussion. Clipse are one of the few groups that successfully and consistently caters to both sides of rap’s splintered psyche,
simultaneously serving the scene with upbeat bangers that get the club poppin’ & subwoofers rattlin’ while crafting clever quotable compositions deserving of repeated
headphone submersions. Though their preceding official albums Lord Willin’ (2002) & Hell Hath No Fury (2006) made bigger splashes commercially, 2009’s Til The
Casket Drops is surely no slouch, a gem which deserves to be revisited with fresh ears – good thing Get On Down has given it the proper treatment it deserves with its
first-ever vinyl pressing!
Til The Casket Drops was a departure from the duo of Malice & Pusha T’s previous works in that it was their first LP not completely produced by The Neptunes. However,
the celebrated team who brought us ‘Grinding’ & ‘Mr. Me Too’ still helmed 8 of the album’s 13 tracks, thus dominating the soundscapes and aesthetic of the album
anyway. With the remaining beats handled by Hitmen Sean C & LV (Jay-Z, Big Pun, Ghostface) and Aftermath’s DJ Khalil (Kendrick Lamar, Aloe Blacc, Eminem) clearly
Clipse stock hadn’t lowered in the game. While boasting notable vocal features from Kanye West, Pharrell, Cam’ron, Keri Hilson, Yo Gotti & their Re-Up Gang affiliate
Ab-Liva, Casket Drops leaves ample space for the core emcee duo of Pusha & Malice to shine in the spotlight, with verses revolving around each other succinctly
in-synch and bonded by an exceptional creative rhythm only biological brothers could share.
Clipse have always delighted in dualities, juxtapositions and contradictions, unabashedly celebrating the capitalistic lifestyle and the grind as the kings of ‘coke-rap’, while
taking hard looks at society’s mores and those of their own individual journeys. We hear Malice’s eventual transition to No Malice taking form on this album as he found
religion, warning others who might follow in his path on ‘Footsteps’: “don’t let my wrongs give you the right of way/ to emulate my past escaping the law’s grasp” while
refusing to be pinned down in one lane: “it weights on my conscience and I hate conscious rap”. Meanwhile Pusha T continues his lyrical ascent into the King Push
persona with bars like “pompous motherfucker, look what them jewels made me/ I’m only finding comfort in knowing you can’t replace me/ What a thing to say, but what
am I to do/ I’m role-playing a conscious nigga and true is true/ Cocaine aside, all of the bloggers behooved/ My critics finally have a verse of mine to jerk off to”
decisively on album opener “Freedom”.
Since it dropped, the Clipse have stated that Casket… is their final album together while subsequently alluding to the possibility of an eventual reunion. Only time will tell,
but until then it’s time to re-celebrate one of hip hop’s most dynamic duos by hearing Til The Casket Drops in a whole new light with its long-overdue, first time on vinyl
pressing via Get On Down featuring all 13 original tracks on wax and cover art by the legendary KAWS! It’s kinda like a big deal…

Perera Elsewhere – All Of This
Friday, April 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Perera Elsewhere – All Of This

Image: 1609213 Building off the sultry electronic art-pop blueprint of her acclaimed 2013 debut ‘Everlast’, Perera Elsewhere returns with her sonically adventurous, dystopian second full-length ‘All Of This’.

Tracklist:
1. Something’s Up
2. The Other Side
3. Happened
4. Tomorrow South
5. Karam
6. Big Heart
7. Girl From Monotronica
8. All Of This
9. Shoes
10. Runaway
11. Weary

Building off the sultry electronic art-pop blueprint of her acclaimed
2013 debut ‘Everlast’, Perera Elsewhere returns with her sonically
adventurous, dystopian second full-length ‘All Of This’. Written and
recorded in Berlin, Istanbul, and Mumbai over the course of three years, ‘All
Of This’ expands on downtempo rhythms and ornate organic/electronic
instrumentation with more attention to folding hypnotic, moody
atmospheres traversing trip-hop, avant R&B, and experimental folk.
A fixture between many disparate music scenes as an experienced yet
self-taught producer, Perera was an original member of Jahcoozi (B-Pitch
Control). She has participated in various collaboratory cultural music
projects in far-flung parts of the world with the Goethe Institut and has
taught people in Bangladesh how to use Ableton to try and create the kind
of musical world they feel to : anthropology, feminism, community, DIY
and empowerment through music are all thrown together to try and make
sense of the things that surround us.
A quiet tension haunts throughout the record’s instinctual arrangement
and movement. Addressing increasing distrust and confusion towards our
political/economic systems, the album’s smoky first single “Something’s
Up” delivers a warning to open our eyes. Touching upon many timely
societal anxieties like wealth inequality the rise of parallel worlds / echo
chambers within society and people living in their own bubbles / gated
communities of the mind (“The Other Side”), ego/self-obsession
(“Happened”), the constant noise of being continuously targeted by
marketing (“Weary”) and dealing with all these pressures or even attempting
to understand our times (“All Of This”), this is a record that approaches
such weighty issues in a manner that feels deeply personal.
Using a hybrid of digital techniques, analog equipment (Buchla,
Korg MS20, Poly6, Monotron Delay) and organics (eg.trumpet and some
percussion), Perera Elsewhere arrives at an original sound spotlighting how
the soulful human element cross-polinates with technology and electronic
exploration. ‘All Of This’ is raw yet sophisticated expression of an artist
trying to make sense of these dark times.

Key Points:
• Follow up to 2013’s ‘Everlast’ which received notable support from
Pitchfork, Vogue, NPR, Resident Advisor, Vogue Italy, Groove
Magazin, Dazed, Dummy Mag, The FADER and more
• First single “Something’s Up” received support from Pitchfork,
Resident Advisor, The FADER, The 405, Indie Mag, Indie Current
• “Something’s Up” Official Music Video premiered on THUMP
• Original member of BPitch Control’s Jahcoozi, with features on
Modeselektor record (FIFA soundtrack)
• Perera Elsewhere has contributed mixes to RBMA (Trainwreck Mix),
FADER, Groove Magazin, Solid Steel (Ninja Tune on NTS), EB
Radio (Electronic Beats), Dublab, KEXP and more
Press Quotes:
• “The music she made existed in some strange continuum
between Siouxsie and the Banshees and Massive Attack. Now, after a
nearly four-year hiatus, she returns with “Something’s Up,” an
ominously quiet piece of ambient pop.” – Pitchfork
• “Haunting, hypnotic, and criminally slept on..” – The FADER Available from 02.06.2017

Saga & Thelonious Martin – Molotov
Friday, March 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Saga & Thelonious Martin – Molotov

Image: 1609349 ‘Molotov’ represents the best elements of its creators, Brooklyn rapper, Saga and Chicago producer, Thelonious Martin. The rhymes are potent and powerful, taking down everyone from cynics to haters, wack emcees, and inner demons. And the instrumentals serve to bring those words to life by way of head-nodding percussion, and slick sample flips.

Because it was crafted by one rapper and one producer, ‘Molotov’ is especially effective, and have made it clear why their approach works so well, especially as a duo. The 12 tracks move in and out of each other seamlessly, while tackling a variety of sounds and subject matter, all with an effective supporting cast of notable features. Like the one-two punch of the straight-up banger “Karma,” which features a fired-up Freddie Gibbs, and the Fashawn-assisted lead single, “Yesterday.”

“With Molotov, it was about maintaining the level of quality I’m known for,” the producer says, noting that it all started with the two sending tracks back and forth. “As the project was coming along, we started building the proper chemistry to make this special.”

Saga agreed, calling the project’s conception “organic.” It was that unrestrained vibe that he says “allowed me to be free with my thought process, and write for the moment.” As a result, he was able to explore new and intriguing ideas, like how “chaos is the end result of a long process of inner discontent within our own lives.” And you can hear him eloquently rhyme about this subject on “Misunderstood,” his favorite cut on the 12 track LP.

And the music doesn’t stop with ‘Molotov’’s release in February. The album will also be available on vinyl in April, courtesy of Coalmine Records. This falls prior to the duo’s departure for Europe, where they will embark on a multi-city tour in promotion for the LP, in late May/early June.

Big shout out to Alfredo Guerrero for making this happen. I no longer have to drag around the LPs.

Following on from the recent club smasher – a cover of Todd Terje’s Inspector Norse – The Gene Dudley Group return with another dance floor destroyer! Original cut Dynamite in the Still of the Night features the powerhouse vocals of Anne Frankenstein (who also performed on big hitter No Trouble on the Mountain) just in time to cause explosions around your bonfire!

On the flip comes another funky cover version given the Gene Dudley treatment. In what is fast becoming something of a tradition, Mr Dudley has taken an early Wah Wah 45s release – in this case Benny Poole’s soul/jazz banger Pearl Baby, Pearl – and re-worked it for 2015. Fresh from his contributions to the Zambidoose album, and work with partner Myron for Stones Throw Records, Eric Boss AKA E (from Myron & E) adds some of his trademark vocals into the mix, making this package a double dance floor heavy hitter!

And don’t forget, The Gene Dudley Group’s sophomore LP, Zambidoose, is out now!

In the world of music, there are those that follow all the trends and latest sounds, hopping opportunistically to the next big thing once a goldmine has been plundered. Then there are those who remain loyal to their aspirations, with their periods of doubt followed by moments, often more fleeting and unexpected, of public unveiling […]

The Second Re$$urrection – Keep On Keeping On / Wise Up
Thursday, October 1st, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Second Re$$urrection – Keep On Keeping On / Wise Up

Image: 1600058 Two unreleased disco funk bangers from Joe Tex backing band THE SECOND RE$$URRECTION. Dug out from Sonny Cravers Stanson Records archive, The band did release one ultra rare disco/modern 45 which goes for $3000+ all day long also coming to Athens of the north soon.

One of the most widely travelled, widely heard unknown groups in the world. A band of serious Funk musicians who have shared the stage with the elite of the elite. They have shared the stage with Jean Carne, Boston, Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, Rufus & Chaka Khan, The Isley Brothers, Shalamar, Tavares, Rufus Thomas, Tyrone Davis, Barbara Lynn, Millie Jackson, The Brothers Johnson, B.T. Express, Brick, Frank Lucas, The Drifters & Blue Magic. They won equal acclaim when they played alongside Earth, Wind & Fire at The CBS Family Affair. They performed at New York’s Rialto Theatre, The Apollo, and toured East and West Germany. They performed for the movie premier of Rudy Ray Moore’s, Petey Wheatstraw – The Devil’s Son-In-Law at Chicago’s Regal Theatre.

The original name of the group was THE SIX DEGREES SOUTH (A Very rare funk45 I released when working at Jazzman Records) based out of Lawton Oklahoma. A nomadic group, they completed a 3 year trek primarily booked at military bases across the nation. They also played a variety of college and university towns, ski-lodges, various clubs and hotel ballrooms. They initially dabbled in recording producing a vinyl 45′ single entitled, Loving You Is Too Far Out. Upon returning to home-base the group met the legendary soul singer, Joe Tex. Being into funk, we were not all that familiar with his soul sound. He explained what he wanted to do and the end results of what could be accomplished. The band, already being self-contained and autonomous seized the opportunity to utilize not only Tex’s fame in the music/radio world but his label connections. Unknowingly, this group almost single-handedly launched Tex’s career back into the spotlight allowing him to re-emerge and re-invent himself after a 5 year sabbatical.

They played, wrote and produced-in-part Joe Tex’s Bumps & Bruises album containing the mega-hit, Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman. This culminated into Tex’s first gold album, won a Grammy nomination and was #86 on Billboard’s 1978 year-end chart.

On the flip side the bands own LP was shelfed after the single “Smoke in the Disco” did not live up to Stansons Records expectations, as these things go it later became a huge modern/northern soul record and is coveted by collectors all over the world, so lets share a bit more of the Lost LP…,. “For my DJ Kicks mix I wanted to do something that was honest,’ explains Troxler. ‘I went out in the morning, micro-dosed myself and did all these errands around town. Then I came home at night and did the mix one take. I wanted to curate something for people to easily listen to, that was nice, and funny and got you in the mood to do your homework, or drive that hour long trip when you need to go somewhere. I see this mix as a gay man named Rodney. Or a big black woman named Birtha.” Once in a generation an artist comes along that shakes up the status quo. Over the past decade, Seth Troxler has become a visionary and authentic voice in dance music, his jovial personality cutting through the noise and continually playing by his own rules. Jaisu – A Long Player
Thursday, April 23rd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Jaisu – A Long Player

Image: 1596772 Astral Black proudly present Jaisu’s ‘A Long Player’, the much anticipated follow up to his 2013 EP ‘A Short Album’. Since then, the Edinburgh-based production mystic has produced numerous tracks on albums from Big Twins (Infamous Mobb/Mobb Deep) & LA-legend LMNO, as well as working with production team The J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League (the group responsible for Rick Ross’ Maybach Music series and hits from Drake & Lil’ Wayne). Coupled with his existing production credits for the likes of Danny Brown, Tony Yayo & Maxsta, Jaisu now boasts a production resume worthy of the praise it has long received from his peers (9th Wonder, Alchemist etc.)

‘A Long Player’ is Jaisu’s vinyl debut and consists of 12, meticulously crafted instrumentals. Each one stitched together in the MPC 2000XL using numerous, expertly selected sample sources. ‘Suite In G Minor League’ & ‘Jump Around’ both explore the ‘3 beats in 1’ concept introduced on ‘A Short Album’, whilst ‘Mrs. Blue Sky’ & ‘HaHa’ hint at the early, hard hitting production style that first caught listeners attention. Meanwhile ‘Drum Circle’ & ‘Satellite’ introduce an up-tempo side to Jaisu’s sound that is positively up lifting.

DJ support so far comes from LuckyMe’s Eclair Fifi, Plasitican, LeftO & Bok Bok and proves that Jaisu’s individual brand of Hip-hop production has the ability to crossover and resonate with listeners of a diverse range of genres.

“i love Jaisu he is my hero” – Cashmere Cat (LuckyMe/GOOD Music)
“Jaisu is one of my favourite producers” – Novelist (XL Recordings/The Square)

Having released on seminal labels such as, Trax, Musique, Westbrook and his own Warehouse imprint, Armando brought his own rough hewn brand of machine Funk and acid to the table and the dance music world has been much better off for it since.

Cologne’s producer duo HADE + DWFL don’t do aerobics – they do beats and bassline steppers
and they’re pretty darn good at it. Check out their acclaimed debut „The Healthiest Man In
Chicago“ and you know what’s up. Cooking up a heavy stew of next level beats, footwork,
Chicago house and sounds from the outer fringes of the bass spectrum, the HADE + DWFL
formula has already proven to work out on floors and festivals across Europe.
For the record: back when Ed Banger and nu rave was king, HADE + DWFL were big in
BeNeLux with their former band Ampersand. Fast forward some few years and the classically
trained synth-wizard HADE has become a staple of CGN’s rejuvenated nightlife, he also rocked
the Beat BBQ, Splash! and Melt! Festival 3 years in a row, spun records for Mykki Blanco or
Mobb Deep, remixed everyone from Iamnobodi to Baba Hafti, and shared the stage with
Oneman, Schlachthofbronx, Eliphino, AndHim, The Underachievers and many more. Recently,
Hade’s heartfelt tribute to DJ Rashad’s untimely passing was championed and played out by
everyone who has a say in the world of low end frequencies – from the Teklife gang to Vice’s
Thump mag (who pronounced the tune their track of the week) to long-time supporters
Oneman, Gilles Peterson and London’s Young Turks camp.
Arguably at his best alongside his production partner and fellow Al Bundy enthusiast DWFL, the
boys now deliver on the promise of their full-length debut with their new EP “Vinnie & Kelly”: a
soul-stirring three-act play of love and despair in a footwork and UKG stylee, inspired by young
Christina Applegate and Matt Leblanc. Well, dope next-gen club music is what it is, really.

About Lockah:
Born in Aberdeen, Lockah is part of the recent wave of innovative Scottish bass music
(alongside the likes of Rustie, HudMo and the Numbers crew). He recently relocated to
Brighton, where he is part of the Donky Pitch label fam.
Lockah has released on Diplo’s Mad Decent/Jeffree’s imprint and on Slugabed’s Activia Benz.
He also runs his own label Tuff Wax. His debut album “Yahoo Or The Highway” scored rave
reviews all over the place, from Pitchfork to XLR8R and Dummy Mag.
Lockah is known to be a massive nerd/scholar of the Miami Bass legacy, which clearly shines
through in his remix of “Vinnie”, taking the sultry R&B/footwork original on a dune buggy trip
to South Beach. We also recommend his Boiler Room Session from earlier this year and his
recent BBC Radio 1 guest mix for Diplo & Friends:

Heliocentrics & Melvin Van Peebles – The Last Transmission
Friday, October 31st, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Heliocentrics & Melvin Van Peebles – The Last Transmission

Image: 1591950 An interplanetary space/love odyssey featuring Melvin Van Peebles (Brer Soul, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song). Following Heliocentrics’ Out There and 13 Degrees of Reality albums. Download card included.

Melvin Van Peebles, the filmmaker, musician, author behind the landmark movie Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song and the trilogy of Brer Soul albums he released in the 70s has teamed with the UK ensemble Heliocentrics to create an interplanetary space/love odyssey told in twelve chapters. The Last Transmission comes nearly ten years after Van Peebles’ appearance as the third member of Quasimoto on Stones Throw Records’ 2005 release The Further Adventure of Lord Quas. For the Heliocentrics, The Last Transmission represents their third Now-Again album, following Out There in 2007 and 13 Degrees of Reality in 2013.
Van Peebles makes for the Heliocentrics’ ideal foil: he did graduate work in astronomy in Holland in the 1950s and maintains an avidinterest in cosmology. The Heliocentrics, as their name conveys, draw inspiration from both the philosophic leanings of the likes of Stephen Hawkings and interstellar mysteries, like those surrounding the Malian Dogon tribe’s knowledge of the Sirius B star hundreds of years before it was discovered. Their music is as indebted to Sun Ra’s interstellar jazz as it is inspired by psychedelia’s spiritual expanse.
The Last Transmission, presented as a vocal album and an expanded instrumental selection on a bonus disc, can be taken as both the band’s interpretation of Van Peebles’ poem and a musical voyage inspired by Van Peebles’ vivid imagery. The band considers it their defining work, the result of more than a decade of playing and recording together. They’ve found a voice as a band, one that meshes with Van Peebles,’ as he weaves an intergalactic “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”
In between producer/drummer Malcolm Catto’s thunderous syncopation and producer/bassist Jake Ferguson’s bellowing bass lines, amidst the analog electronics and atmospheric interference naturally accorded by their organic analogue process, Van Peebles’ voice floats in and out, spectral in its tone, complete in its conviction in the unfathomable sense that life’s eruption in the cosmic expanse made, and in love’s ability to transform and transcend death.

SIDE A:
CHAPTER 01: Prologue
CHAPTER 02: Big Bang Reincarnation
CHAPTER 03: Searching For Signs Of Life
CHAPTER 04: Blue Mist

Black Strobe – Godforsaken Roads
Friday, September 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Black Strobe – Godforsaken Roads

Image: 1590341 A small cellar in a smart building. A carefully curated collection of analogue synthesisers. A pot of
Brylcreem on a table. ZZ Top and Muddy Waters vinyl sitting in a corner in front of a gleaming guitar
and an old amplifier. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Arnaud Rebotini’s lair in Montmartre, Paris.
A hulk of a man, Rebotini may look physically impressive but inside he’s really a big softy who loves
singing the blues and has an almost carnal attachment to his keyboards and vintage drum machines.
His musical career is now divided between two projects: one uses his own name, Arnaud Rebotini,
releasing instrumental electronic albums, both nostalgic and futurist, that he plays live on stage –
alone – surrounded by his favourite machines. The other is Black Strobe, where he sings and plays a
steamy mix of rock and electronic music heavily influenced by blues and country ‘n’ western. The
project comes to life fully on stage with the energy of a four-person group.
In September 2014, Black Strobe will release his second album, Godforsaken Roads. The record
confirms Rebotini’s rock sensibility and debt to the great American tradition of songwriting, with
songs touching on the classic themes of the blues – the randomness of life, the very weight of
existence and the strong emotions that run just below the surface (love, lust, loneliness…). He
plunges into this world of the bayou, prison and the devil with real passion and the voice of crooner
often compared to Iggy Pop or Nick Cave.
Godforsaken Roads contains ten new tracks, including the latest singles Going Back Home and
Broken Phone Blues. The digital edition adds Boogie In Zero Gravity and The Girl From The Bayou
released as singles in 2012. On the album, Rebotini also reappropriates Folsom Prison Blues, a
Johnny Cash classic, once again with the aim of keeping the blues/country ‘n’ western flame alive
(the group’s first album already contained a cover version of Bo Diddley’s famous track I’m A Man).
This new version, entirely synth-led with not a guitar in sight, transports the song to another spacetime
continuum with swathes of keyboard worthy of Tangerine Dream, perfectly resuming the spirit of
Black Strobe in 2014.
However, don’t think that Godforsaken Roads is all retro – in fact it’s bang up to date, using
electronics, sometimes even of a disco slant, to give Black Strobe its futurist dimension. The album
allows Arnaud Rebotini to capture the spirit of America’s cowboy era and transport it to the present
day with resolutely modern production, much like the spirit of the blues that seeps from the music of
electro-pop idols Depeche Mode.
This contemporary western feel, both melancholic and polished, came to the notice of Quentin
Tarantino – who used Black Strobe’s cover version of I’m A Man for the trailer of Django Unchained
– and Dior, who chose the same track to advertise their perfume Eau Sauvage. By creating a link
between the past, present and future, the group’s music has also appealed to Martin Scorsese (the
trailer of The Wolf of Wall Street), Guy Ritchie (the soundtrack to RocknRolla) and the creators of the
videogame Grand Theft Auto V (GTA).
With this new album, layered and feverish, the group is back with renewed faith in the power of the
blues and a passion for motivating beats.

For fans of
Nick Cave , Depeche Mode, LCD Soundsystem, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash…

Smoove & Turrell – Broken Toys
Thursday, June 26th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Smoove & Turrell – Broken Toys

Image: 1589377 Newcastle’s finest Smoove & Turrell are back with their third studio album Broken Toys. Their rise through the ranks of British soul has been nothing but unstoppable, here’s a little recap why:

First album Antique Soul scored some heavy points with singles I Can’t Give You Up, You Don’t Know & Beggarman. Gaining the lads two records of the week on Radio 2 (Radcliffe & Maconie) and their first ever-national playlist on 6music. The original 7” of the northern soul banger I Can’t Give You Up still changes hands for up to £160 on the net. This propelled Smoove & Turrell to headlining stages at festivals such as Glastonbury and Big Chill to name a few, not bad for an unknown Geordie band.

Any worries about a difficult second album were brushed aside when in 2011 S&T released Eccentric Audio. With Smoove’s timeless production skills and a confident John Turrell at the top of his game both lyrically and vocally, Eccentric Audio saw the boys break through onto national TV & Radio playlists throughout the UK and Europe. Getting two Radio2 playlists with singles Hard Work and Gabriel and MTV Europe and Virgin Media playlists with single Slow Down.

With the word starting to spread across the pond to America S&T tracks could be heard on as many things as network giant ABC’s primetime campaign, feature film For A Good Time Call, video game The Crew and international smash hit series like The Finder & World of Jenks.

Back on home turf, track Hard Work was used on a national advertising campaign as well as others being used on a host of primetime TV shows such as Match of the Day, Strictly Come Dancing, Splash & Coronation Street opening up S&T to yet a wider audience again.

Live performance highlights saw the boys perform in venues as varied as the legendary terrace in Space Ibiza, it took them as far a field as Moscow and Dubai, it let them play to the whole of Marseille from the ramparts of a castle and led them to support the one and only Nile Rodgers & Chic.

Now its 2014 and the album is Broken Toys. Scheduled for release in May, this is another jump forward both in terms of production and appeal. Sparkling pop songs flirt with disco influenced floor stompers in between the blues, jazz, funk & soul the boys are so well known for.

First out of the blocks will be the double A side single – Lay It On Me / I Just Want More followed by the barnstorming Will You Be Mine in May.

Hitting the road again with their motley crew of Geordie reprobates Smoove & Turrell’s 7 piece band will once again be gaining yet more of a loyal fan base both here in the UK and in Europe & the wider world. Available from 06.06.2014

Image: 1587136 BBE present their first step into a new wave of disco rap albums planned for 2014 with their essential new collection Rock It, Don’t Stop It compiled by Sean P.

Without doubt, funk is the father of hip-hop – and although disco is sometimes viewed as somewhat anathematic to that movement, it’s worth remembering that for a while at least, it provided the vehicle that brought rap out of New York and presented it to the world – and the
results of these divergent musical styles crossing paths still resonate around the globe.
It’s easy to forget or play down the importance of the Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ – an unusual, clever novelty record that was cocksure and playful, which burned up the commercial airwaves in 1979. It was followed swiftly by Kurtis Blow’s ‘Christmas Rapping’, which also charted and gave Top Of The Pops its first on-stage rapper in early 1980. Although it wasn’t yet referred to as hip-hop in the UK, rap had already made itself known to the record-buying public at large – and as the rap 12-inch single was barely a year old, this was an incredible feat for such a nascent scene.
The largely independent rap releases which had been slowly but steadily trickling out of the US would occasionally, like Sugarhill’s appropriation of Chic’s ‘Good Times’, take their musical cues from popular club tracks of the day – and disco-derived rap records were plenty. ‘Rock It… Don’t Stop It!’ features a selection of forgotten or relatively obscure rap singles from the ’79-‘83 period, universally known as ‘old school’, which fall into this category. Inspiration for these vignettes from hip-hop’s evolution range from classic party rockers by Cheryl Lynn, through to Yazoo (and, no doubt, ‘Rapper’s Delight’) and the featured MCs give it their best shot with humour, earnestness and everything in-between. Although most of these hail from New York state, the under-represented Massachusetts shines alongside a prominent player which at the time had yet to find its own distinctive voice – Los Angeles.
Hip hop and rap are now a dominant force in contemporary music and have constantly adapted to stay relevant, drawing on and absorbing all around them. ‘Rock It… Don’t Stop It!’ goes back over 30 years to their collective big bang moment.
