Koss – Born To Live

Image: 1616594 “I just use turntables, vinyl and a MPC, that’s it. I always come back to
the basics with production because it forces me to be creative. Giving a
sense to a melody or a rhythm is a powerful thing and it doesn’t happen
every day.” Belgium based producer, Koss can be considered a hip-hop
purist.
His previously released body of work has emulated late 80’s / early 90’s
heaters producing EP’s for Craig G (Juice Crew), AG (Showbiz & AG) and
El Da Sensei (Artifacts). Now Below System Records (Masta Ace, Phat
Kat, Chuuwee & Trizz) will be releasing his official full-length production
album entitled “Born To Live”.
Whereas the previous EPs was one MC per release, the forthcoming
album boasts an all-star line-up of spitters including Torae, Large
Professor, Masta Ace, Keith Murray, Blaq Poet, Ruste Juxx, J-Live and
Craig G. When asked why he decided to have different features on each
track Koss related “I wanted this album to express life and my passion
for the Hip-Hop culture. My aim was to choose MCs that no matter what
is in style at the moment always stay consistent and remember where
they came from.”
The true school vibe of the album even extends to the remixers that
Koss selected. “Born To Live” features track remixes courtesy of K-Def
(Ghostface Killah, Tragedy Khadaf), Large Professor (Main Source, Nas)
and close friends 12 Finger Dan and B-Base.

Shabaam Sahdeeq – Modern Artillery
Friday, January 8th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Shabaam Sahdeeq – Modern Artillery

Image: 1601531 Dutch/Swedish-based, indie Hip-Hop consortium, Elite Fleet
Records, is pleased to unveil their inaugural LP, ‘Modern Artillery,’
from the Brooklyn rap veteran, Shabaam Sahdeeq.
As part of Rawkus Records’ dream team roster, which included
labelmates Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Company Flow and Pharoahe
Monch, among others, Shabaam was part of Hip-Hop’s most
influential independent rise of the mid-to-late ‘90s. A founding
member of DJ Spinna’s Polyrhythm Addicts, Sahdeeq found a
career resurgence in the mid 2000’s with the release of the group’s
sophomore LP, ‘Break Glass.’ Over the next several years, Shabaam
would go onto release quite a few independently launched projects
through various labels, including his own Marvial Entertainment
imprint, all of which led up to his most acclaimed solo effort to date,
‘Keepers of the Lost Art,’ which was released in april of 2014, via
Below System Records.
On the heels of the release of ‘Lost Art,’ the ‘5 Star General’ emcee
has joined forces with Elite Fleet Records’ for the release of, ‘Modern
Artillery,’ a seven track LP, produced entirely by the Dutch-based
beatsmith, Big Ape. Ape’s bouncy, basement style production is well
suited for Shabaam’s precise rhyme schemes, that are complimented
with the handy work Elite Fleet’s own, DJ Devastate. Featured on the
LP are Outerspace, Ruste juxx, Reef the Lost Cauze, Torae, 8thW1,
and the late PH (Pumpkin Head).

• Shabaam Sahdeeq is on the heels of his most acclaimed solo
effort, ‘Keepers of the Lost Art’
• The LP inlcudes guest features from Outerspace, Ruste juxx,

JR & PH7 (Ft. Chuuwee) – The South Sac Mack
Friday, June 5th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on JR & PH7 (Ft. Chuuwee) – The South Sac Mack

Image: 1596524 Chuuwee and JR & PH7 Pay Tribute To Sactown with The South Sac Mack. JR & PH7 and Chuuwee are pleased to announce news of their collaborative LP, The South Sac Mack. The project brings the German production duo together with the Sacremento spitter for 17 breezy tracks that epitomize the sound of the new West. The South Sac Mack will give listeners a street level perspective of Sactown, and will be available on all formats on March 24, 2015, from Below System Records.

This is not the first time that both producers have aligned their production talents with Chuuwee. After hearing about Jorg & Peter through a close friend who has worked with them in the past, Chu began an email exchange that eventually led to them working together on multiple songs. 2012’s “Travelin”, “It Is What It Is”, and “Just Like SAC” not only allowed for them to create music for their fans, but also to develop a rapport that forged their chemistry for, SSM. Unlike other bonds between their contemporaries, Chu and JR & PH7’s ties grew stronger organically, and not in hopes of chasing a check, these characteristics reflect beautifully on the album.

With a background in soulful Boom Bap, the album manages to blend ’90s fundamentals, with a twist of West Coast sensibilities. The final product is a hybrid, perfect for the modern day head that stands out among most contemporary Hip-Hop works. Thematically, the decision to name a handful of tracks after neighborhoods throughout Sacramento, gives the listener a first-person narrative, that puts themselves in the shoes of Chuuwee, as they get to experience Cali’s capital city. Tracks like the stream of consciousness driven “Meadowview Morning”, which describe the area as a microcosm where everyone’s actions are connected, and “Meanwhile Off Mack”, which creates a “Me Against The World” scenario between the protagonist, and those around him through its memorable chorus, allow us to see Sacramento in a unique light. This particular theme is continued on tracks such as the Blu assisted “DueYuu”, “James Rutter (Swim Center)” and “Florin High Flirt”, where Chuuwee highlights the various spots that have all played a role in developing the person that he is today. Conversely, joints such as the rough around the edges “Riverside Ransom,” show that Chuuwee can throw down some gully bars when needed, further showcasing the multitalented efforts of both the rhymer, and production duo.

In terms of crafting the perfect sound for Chuuwee to speak his mind, fostering an organic work flow was the most important aspect for this album to take shape ” We just wanted to create a sound that we feel goes well with Chuuwee and the story he is telling on the record,” say the European beatsmiths. “The whole process was super smooth, and we let it flourish naturally based on the subject matter and the overall scope of the album,” they conclude.

For such a broad album that both manages to highlight Sactown’s features, through Chuuwee’s words, and JR & PH7’s lush soundscapes, The South Sac Mack succeeds in transporting us to the midst of the 916.

“Sometimes a beautiful view of a sunset comes with a price, as told by Sacramento emcee Chuuwee’?¦” – Mass Appeal
“It’??s been a minute since we last checked in with Sacramento emcee, Chuuwee, on some solo sh*t. Well, make no mistake about it, dude’??s bars are still top-notch ‘?? let this new LP serve as the proof.” – Okayplayer
“With many of the tracks named after Sacremento neighborhoods, the album will give listeners a street level perspective of Chuuwee’s surroundings through the sounds of the “new West.” – DJ Booth
“Chuuwee’??s ridiculously smooth Cali flow and wordplay is exactly the sort of style that, combined with his liberal use of Sacramento references and imagery, are setting him up with the groundwork a young emergent rapper needs to become recognisable.” – ACCLAIM Magazine
“Edited with digitally imprinted noise for a VHS appearance, the video [“Meanwhile off Mack”] here harps back to the days when emcees made videos with what they could get their hands on.” – HotNewHipHop
“The pair offers a breath of fresh air as far as hope in real Hip-Hop is concerned, and their work is beyond worthy of checking out if you are unfamiliar.” – RESPECT Magazine
“Well, this time the guys from Germany and Denmark are working together with emcee Chuuwee, and it’??s another collaboration to be excited about.” – The Find Mag

Black Strobe – Godforsaken Roads
Friday, September 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Black Strobe – Godforsaken Roads

Image: 1590341 A small cellar in a smart building. A carefully curated collection of analogue synthesisers. A pot of
Brylcreem on a table. ZZ Top and Muddy Waters vinyl sitting in a corner in front of a gleaming guitar
and an old amplifier. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Arnaud Rebotini’s lair in Montmartre, Paris.
A hulk of a man, Rebotini may look physically impressive but inside he’s really a big softy who loves
singing the blues and has an almost carnal attachment to his keyboards and vintage drum machines.
His musical career is now divided between two projects: one uses his own name, Arnaud Rebotini,
releasing instrumental electronic albums, both nostalgic and futurist, that he plays live on stage –
alone – surrounded by his favourite machines. The other is Black Strobe, where he sings and plays a
steamy mix of rock and electronic music heavily influenced by blues and country ‘n’ western. The
project comes to life fully on stage with the energy of a four-person group.
In September 2014, Black Strobe will release his second album, Godforsaken Roads. The record
confirms Rebotini’s rock sensibility and debt to the great American tradition of songwriting, with
songs touching on the classic themes of the blues – the randomness of life, the very weight of
existence and the strong emotions that run just below the surface (love, lust, loneliness…). He
plunges into this world of the bayou, prison and the devil with real passion and the voice of crooner
often compared to Iggy Pop or Nick Cave.
Godforsaken Roads contains ten new tracks, including the latest singles Going Back Home and
Broken Phone Blues. The digital edition adds Boogie In Zero Gravity and The Girl From The Bayou
released as singles in 2012. On the album, Rebotini also reappropriates Folsom Prison Blues, a
Johnny Cash classic, once again with the aim of keeping the blues/country ‘n’ western flame alive
(the group’s first album already contained a cover version of Bo Diddley’s famous track I’m A Man).
This new version, entirely synth-led with not a guitar in sight, transports the song to another spacetime
continuum with swathes of keyboard worthy of Tangerine Dream, perfectly resuming the spirit of
Black Strobe in 2014.
However, don’t think that Godforsaken Roads is all retro – in fact it’s bang up to date, using
electronics, sometimes even of a disco slant, to give Black Strobe its futurist dimension. The album
allows Arnaud Rebotini to capture the spirit of America’s cowboy era and transport it to the present
day with resolutely modern production, much like the spirit of the blues that seeps from the music of
electro-pop idols Depeche Mode.
This contemporary western feel, both melancholic and polished, came to the notice of Quentin
Tarantino – who used Black Strobe’s cover version of I’m A Man for the trailer of Django Unchained
– and Dior, who chose the same track to advertise their perfume Eau Sauvage. By creating a link
between the past, present and future, the group’s music has also appealed to Martin Scorsese (the
trailer of The Wolf of Wall Street), Guy Ritchie (the soundtrack to RocknRolla) and the creators of the
videogame Grand Theft Auto V (GTA).
With this new album, layered and feverish, the group is back with renewed faith in the power of the
blues and a passion for motivating beats.

For fans of
Nick Cave , Depeche Mode, LCD Soundsystem, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash…

It’s no big secret that 2007 was another shocker for our beloved industry. You probably heard about it in the news. Artists were so broke they had to start to work at McDonalds. Record labels went out of business. Distribution companies had to close their doors. And almost every music industry jibb-jabb complained about disastrous records sales, the fucking internet and all these god damned kids who don’t want to spend their money for music anymore.

But you know what? That’s only one side of the coin. The other truth is that 2007 was a freaking great year for new refreshing music. One more reason to ask around again what Groove Attack‘s employees have been listening to during the past twelve months.

On this occasion the entire Groove Attack family would like to wish everybody a Happy New Year. Enjoy your holidays. And buy more records in 2008 …

Same procedure as every year. Once again we asked around what Groove Attack’s employees have been listening to during the past year.

A sure thing in 2004 was the huge comeback of house music. Moody 4 to the floor rhythms ruled the office. Theo everywhere. And there was the return of rock music. A sort of Eagles Of Death Metal rock music. Hot and sweaty. Maybe we’ll grow out of the hip hop box real soon. But what the hell do I know? Just wondering what the next year has in store for everyone. Read on ‘cuz this list is for you …
