Phibes – Virginia Swing / Funky Rubber Band
Thursday, November 16th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Phibes – Virginia Swing / Funky Rubber Band

Image: 1616597 Funky brothers Ryan and Scott Wild got together musically in 2014,
though they’ve been hanging out rather longer than that. The duo, hailing
from southwest England, are known for mixing up a cocktail of party
phibes across breaks, swing, funk, hip hop, drum and bass, glitch hop,
and reggae and have had #1 releases on Juno and Beatport.
Virginia label Boogieburg Recordings offers up some of the finest glitch
swing and heavy funk breaks by Phibes in the form of “Virginia Swing”
and “Funky Rubber Band” housed in a hand-stamped antique green “old
style” paper sleeve for the label’s third 7” release. Two absolute winners
on the dance floor. Available from 08.12.2017

John Webber & Robbie Banks – Von Der Street In Die Suite (Ltd. Deluxe Box)

CARIBBEAN ROOTS

Strut team up for the first time with respected French label Heavenly Sweetness for
the brand new album by the inspired poet, novelist and musician, Anthony Joseph.
The Caribbean is an influence that runs through Joseph’s discography, obliquely or headon,
suggested or on full display. It resonates on each of his albums, from the furious trance
of ‘Bird Head Son’ to the more polished ‘Time’. On ‘Caribbean Roots’, he has now decided
to turn a guiding thread and a reference point into a communications cable – a powerful
bond that makes light of distance and braves the seas to link his island to that of his
friends in the Caribbean arc, dancing to the strains of tumbélé and mendé only a few miles
from Port of Spain where people live it up to rapso and soca beats.
‘Caribbean Roots’ represents a return to his roots for Anthony Joseph, who has always
remained true to a powerful, deep-seated sense of his Caribbean identity. Having started
out as a joint project with the outstanding percussionist Roger Raspail (Cesaria Evora,
Papa Wemba, Kassav), ‘Caribbean Roots’ swiftly grew into a creative force incorporating
the rhythms, sounds and vibes that rock the Caribbean from San Fernando, Scarborough,
Kingston and Les Abymes to Port-au-Prince and Havana. Backed by a band made up
of a blend of local musicians, the album attempts to unite the different islands into a
single entity whilst ensuring that the identity of each is in no way diluted by the mix,
instead creating a richer and stronger alloy. The saxophones of Shabaka Hutchings (The
Heliocentrics) and Jason Yarde, the trumpet of Yvon Guillard (Magma), the bass of Mike
Clinton (Salif Keita) and the trombone of Pierre Chabrèle (Creole Jazz Orchestra) all
combine to form a group of Caribbean All Stars to which Andy Narrell, the master of the
steel pans, brings ringing drum beats.
The album features bursts of catchy rhythms and slow percussive riff progressions, as on a
film soundtrack, incandescent voodoo funk and rhythmic high-speed frenzies shot through
with free-jazz sax. This reunion of the Caribbean diaspora was never meant to come up
with a formula divisible into eleven separate tracks – its goal was to explore and discover
new sounds. And all of this under Anthony Joseph’s guidance, as he spins his lyrical blend
of afro-futurism and surrealism, commemorating the Caribbean people’s sometimes violent
resistance to colonialism. Anthony Joseph, one moment a chronicler reciting his text
against a background of simple percussion, the next a storyteller possessed by the power
of a hypnotic bassline, then an adventurer chanting among mangroves where the rhythm
section and the brass have created an impenetrable thicket. At turns, an MC too, strutting
to a fat, throbbing groove in vocal tandem with Sly Johnson or David Rudder to pay tribute
to Mighty Sparrow, the undisputed and indisputable king of calypso.

Scattered and separated from each other by dozens,
sometimes hundreds of nautical miles, the isles of the
archipelago communicated with each other hitherto through
seaborne vibrations. With ‘Caribbean Roots’, Anthony Joseph
has ventured beneath the waves to tie their roots together.

KEY POINTS:
– One of Anthony Joseph’s finest and hardest hitting studio albums, exploring deep
Caribbean musical heritage from across the islands
– featured guests include Roger Raspail, Shabaka Hutchings and Yvon Guillard
– first collaboration between Strut and Heavenly Sweetness
– touring around album across Europe during 2016-7

The ‘Strange Games’ series which began in the summer of 1997, represents the blueprint for modern R&B and rap music. It joins the dots between 70s soul, 80s rare groove and 90s hip hop. This compilation contains a wide variety styles, from classic dance-floor fillers to lesser known gems. A more accessible ‘digger’s delight’ with an emphasis on quality tracks, not just songs only worth having for a 2 second sample. Featuring a much more worldly selection than its predecessors, tracks by the multi platinum selling War and Sylvia (Founder of Sugarhill Records) sit side by side with world music icons like C.K. Mann and Francisco Aguabella. This volume is the 5th in a series of legendary ‘Strange Games…’ records, this time compiled by the one and only DJ Spinna.

The Halftone Soceity Rhythm Section – Don’t Look Any Further/Caribbean Queen
Friday, January 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Halftone Soceity Rhythm Section – Don’t Look Any Further/Caribbean Queen

Image: 1601828 CB Records and Mophono’s Halftone Society is proud to announce
the first single from their new offshoot. Dubbed (the) “Halftone
Society Rhythm Section”, it features some of the Bay Area’s most
talented live instrumentalists. The project is a refreshing vocalbased
departure from Mophono’s usual curiously obscure offerings,
as it reimagines two eighties dance floor DJ classics “Don’t Look Any
Further” by Dennis Edwards and “Caribbean Queen” by Billy Ocean.
The demand for this music became very apparent when Mophono’s
“Cut Form Creator Dub” of “Caribbean Queen” was recently featured
on the popular bay area compilation “off the beaten tracks”. On
this new single,“The Halftone Society Rhythm Section” aims to pair
the infectious sheen of eighties boogie with an inviting minimalism
reminiscent of seventies funk standards. Young Aundee’s vocals
channel a pop landscape full of rebellious souls, bankrupt lives and
crumbling nations.
The HSRS’s unpredictable approach to the A-Side, “Don’t Look Any
Further”, finds the listener in a gritty drum heavy distortion bath of
lush Rhodes and melodica choruses. On the B-side, with “Caribbean
Queen”, The HSRS adds a layer of vulnerable grit to the silky original
and expounds upon the island sound with Patrick Korte aka P Dub’s
phenomenal drum work, warm dubs and a massive break down that
calls for a rewind.

• Classic DJ cuts covered in a new and unique way
• Produced by Mophono
• Band’s First release on vinyl
• Drum Breaks
• Limited Edition collectible 7” Available from 29.01.2016

Available from 19.04.2013

Night Hawks / Scott Woods – Chicken Grabber/ Chicken Rock
Sunday, March 31st, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Night Hawks / Scott Woods – Chicken Grabber/ Chicken Rock

Image: 1579714 Something of a poultry offering here as we ransack the coop to pull out these two Chicken-based oddities. On the top side is the Nite Hawks (a very early incarnation of the Crusaders – yes them of ‘Street Life’ success and ignominy) with their wondrous, slinky instrumental number ‘Chicken Grabber’, a jazzy, bump and grinder punctuated by frenzied clucking from the hens and deranged muttering from their unknown pursuer. Made infamous by its appearance in John Waters’ notorious schlock-fest ‘Pink Flamingos’, ‘Chicken Grabber’ is surely one of the best songs about chicken ever made. That might seem a weak claim on the face of it, but then just consider the hundreds, perhaps thousands of other records inspired by our fowl feathered friends, and then consider that on the flip-side of this little rooster, we serve up Scott Wood’s ‘Chicken Rock’ – another rock & roll curio with a decidedly unhinged air, and another of the very best chicken sides ever waxed. 2005 with seminal album ‘How About A Game of
Chess’, shortlisted for Gilles Peterson’s coveted
Worldwide album of the Year award. For the
follow up, Marc began re-imagining his favourite
hip hop beats from the golden era, retaining the
feel of those extended, looping grooves whilst
also re-introducing the excitement and
musicianship of the records from which they
were sampled: ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ was born.
Drawing on the musical talents of Brad Somatik
and 4hero drummer Luke Parkhouse, this largely
instrumental album also featured stunning
performances from rappers Capitol A and Voice.
An artist who was introduced to jazz music by his
favourite hip hop beat-makers, ‘Dirty Old Hip
Hop’ serves as a loving tribute to both art-forms,
weaving the two together until even the most
ardent purist will fnd it hard to defne any space
between.
“Visioneers is not a band, it’s a studio project. I
want to pay respect to hip hop producers like
Jazzy Jef, Jay Dee and Pete Rock for introducing
me to Jazz and I needed to produce the tracks
like hip hop records that sound phat in a club
and not like dinner Jazz, it’s about reclaiming
Jazz.” – Marc Mac, 2006
Pressed on heavyweight orange vinyl, ‘Dirty Old
Hip Hop’ will be available in December 2017
Key selling points:
– Contains iconic re-composed versions of hip
hop classics The World Is Yours by Nas and
Runnin’ by the Pharcyde alongside original
tracks.
– Blurring the lines between hip hop and jazz, the
album is equally appealing to purist fans of
either style.
– Unavailable and in-demand on vinyl for almost
a decade, the album currently fetches up to £80
on Discogs.
– repress on lovely heavyweight orange vinyl

Sweat Band – Sweat Band
Wednesday, October 25th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sweat Band – Sweat Band

Image: 1616307 The 1970s saw the rise of Funk as we now
know. Nothing fueled the 70s funk revolution
quite like George Clinton’s massive musical
collective known as Parliament-Funkadelic.
One of the main contributors to the P-Funk
sound was Cincinnati native and former JB’s
member Bootsy Collins. Literally, there would be
no Mothership without Bootsy, aka Bootzilla, a
true monster on the bass.
1980’s Sweat Band was originally envisioned to
be the 5th release from Bootsy Collin’s
funktacular Rubber Band. But somehow Bootsy
lost the rights to the Rubber Band name to, of all
things, a folk act. But rest assured, though the
name may be slightly different, all the funk is
intact. For this outing Bootsy’s background with
James Brown and as a major contributor to the
Parliament Funkadelic family are in full effect.
Players on the project include Michael Hampton
and Garry Shider on guitar, Bernie Worrell on
the keys, as well as a horn line comprising Fred
Wesley, Richard Griffith and Maceo Parker. And
being that this is a full-fledged P-Funk outing,
George Clinton himself is Executive Producer.
Anchoring the entire project, the amazing bass
work of the one and only Bootsy Collins.

Latyrx – The Album (20th Anniversary)(BF RSD)

Image: 1615480 2-LP gatefold on swirled red/white and blue/white vinyl, with two bonus songs and an exclusive Black Friday RSD 7” of “Lady Don’t Tek No”
(produced by DJ Shadow)

20 years after its initial release, the Bay Area uber-classic Latyrx: The Album – lyricists Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker, with production from DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel and Lyrics Born – still stands as a seminal recording. It has gone on to resonate with successive generations of listeners, and influence countless artists. Recorded over a two-year period, it was the first full-length release from the legendary Solesides collective, and encapsulates a highly creative and influential time in hip-hop, frequently dubbed The Golden Age. Over the course of the original release’s 42 minutes, not only can you hear Lyrics Born and Lateef literally growing into themselves as artists, but you can also hear the germination of the Solesides sound, first given birth at California’s UC Davis in the early ‘90s, driven by brothers-in- beats-andrhymes Blackalicious and DJ Shadow.
Partially by design, and partially out of necessity, Latyrx—and the Solesides crew as a whole—became trailblazers. Lyrics Born remembers (in this set’s lengthy liner notes), “We really wanted to explore. New styles, new subject matter, new textures, new vocabulary. It came down to even wanting to do words in the English language that you had never heard in a rap song before. It was all about pushing.”
And push they did, with game-changing lyrical exercises like “Say That,” “Balcony Beach,” “The Wreckoning” and “The Muzappers Mix.” Beyond cuts that back-in- the-day fans know from the original sequence, the two bonus tracks included in this edition are: “Looking Over A City” [produced by El-P], originally released on the Quannum compilation Spectrum. And “The Last Trumpet,” which closes this new deluxe edition. Originally appearing on the 2003 Lyrics Born solo album Later That Day, it’s one of Latyrx’s most-realized collaborations, and one of their most overtly-politically-themed songs. This deluxe, 2-LP issue of Latyrx: The Album is a must for longtime fans and newly-initiated listeners alike, with in-depth liner notes by veteran Bay Area journalist Eric Arnold (including input from Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker) and packaged in a gatefold format. And for Black Friday Record Store Day only, 1,000 lucky buyers will have the addition of a first-time-ever 7-Inch of the group’s 1997 single “Lady Don’t Tek No,”produced by DJ Shadow. Sean Price – Refrigerator P (BF RSD)
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sean Price – Refrigerator P (BF RSD)

Image: 1615575 Coalmine Records is honored to release a limited-edition, 10-inch maxi
single of “Refrigerator P,” a bruiser of a track from Philly producer Small
Professor and the late, legendary Sean Price.
From the moment the strings drop, you already know there’s no other
emcee that could do this beat justice like P! Lyrically, the Brownsville
native is as on point as ever, dropping crazy references of the Chicago
Bears’ Super Bowl XX victory and his trademark no-bullsh*t punchlines.
And then there’s the hook, which pairs his longtime partner-in-rhyme and
other half of Heltah Skeltah, The Rockness Monstah, with the turntable
madness of DJ Revolution.
Ruck and Rock prove once again why they’re regarded as such an
incredible force, as Rock’s no nonsense hook complements P’s bully
bars in a way that could very well make this track one of the toughest
tracks in P’s catalog.
The maxi-single comes loaded with the instrumental and a special
bonus beat selection called “P’s Theme.” Rounding out the release is
the smoothed out “Peaky Blinders” remix of “Refrigerator P” featuring the
Emerald Isle-born emcee, Rob Kelly. Listeners will no doubt attest that he
holds his weight alongside P.
