Phibes – Virginia Swing / Funky Rubber Band
Thursday, November 16th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Phibes – Virginia Swing / Funky Rubber Band

Image: 1616597 Funky brothers Ryan and Scott Wild got together musically in 2014,
though they’ve been hanging out rather longer than that. The duo, hailing
from southwest England, are known for mixing up a cocktail of party
phibes across breaks, swing, funk, hip hop, drum and bass, glitch hop,
and reggae and have had #1 releases on Juno and Beatport.
Virginia label Boogieburg Recordings offers up some of the finest glitch
swing and heavy funk breaks by Phibes in the form of “Virginia Swing”
and “Funky Rubber Band” housed in a hand-stamped antique green “old
style” paper sleeve for the label’s third 7” release. Two absolute winners
on the dance floor. Available from 15.12.2017

John Webber & Robbie Banks – Von Der Street In Die Suite (Ltd. Deluxe Box)

CARIBBEAN ROOTS

Strut team up for the first time with respected French label Heavenly Sweetness for
the brand new album by the inspired poet, novelist and musician, Anthony Joseph.
The Caribbean is an influence that runs through Joseph’s discography, obliquely or headon,
suggested or on full display. It resonates on each of his albums, from the furious trance
of ‘Bird Head Son’ to the more polished ‘Time’. On ‘Caribbean Roots’, he has now decided
to turn a guiding thread and a reference point into a communications cable – a powerful
bond that makes light of distance and braves the seas to link his island to that of his
friends in the Caribbean arc, dancing to the strains of tumbélé and mendé only a few miles
from Port of Spain where people live it up to rapso and soca beats.
‘Caribbean Roots’ represents a return to his roots for Anthony Joseph, who has always
remained true to a powerful, deep-seated sense of his Caribbean identity. Having started
out as a joint project with the outstanding percussionist Roger Raspail (Cesaria Evora,
Papa Wemba, Kassav), ‘Caribbean Roots’ swiftly grew into a creative force incorporating
the rhythms, sounds and vibes that rock the Caribbean from San Fernando, Scarborough,
Kingston and Les Abymes to Port-au-Prince and Havana. Backed by a band made up
of a blend of local musicians, the album attempts to unite the different islands into a
single entity whilst ensuring that the identity of each is in no way diluted by the mix,
instead creating a richer and stronger alloy. The saxophones of Shabaka Hutchings (The
Heliocentrics) and Jason Yarde, the trumpet of Yvon Guillard (Magma), the bass of Mike
Clinton (Salif Keita) and the trombone of Pierre Chabrèle (Creole Jazz Orchestra) all
combine to form a group of Caribbean All Stars to which Andy Narrell, the master of the
steel pans, brings ringing drum beats.
The album features bursts of catchy rhythms and slow percussive riff progressions, as on a
film soundtrack, incandescent voodoo funk and rhythmic high-speed frenzies shot through
with free-jazz sax. This reunion of the Caribbean diaspora was never meant to come up
with a formula divisible into eleven separate tracks – its goal was to explore and discover
new sounds. And all of this under Anthony Joseph’s guidance, as he spins his lyrical blend
of afro-futurism and surrealism, commemorating the Caribbean people’s sometimes violent
resistance to colonialism. Anthony Joseph, one moment a chronicler reciting his text
against a background of simple percussion, the next a storyteller possessed by the power
of a hypnotic bassline, then an adventurer chanting among mangroves where the rhythm
section and the brass have created an impenetrable thicket. At turns, an MC too, strutting
to a fat, throbbing groove in vocal tandem with Sly Johnson or David Rudder to pay tribute
to Mighty Sparrow, the undisputed and indisputable king of calypso.

Scattered and separated from each other by dozens,
sometimes hundreds of nautical miles, the isles of the
archipelago communicated with each other hitherto through
seaborne vibrations. With ‘Caribbean Roots’, Anthony Joseph
has ventured beneath the waves to tie their roots together.

KEY POINTS:
– One of Anthony Joseph’s finest and hardest hitting studio albums, exploring deep
Caribbean musical heritage from across the islands
– featured guests include Roger Raspail, Shabaka Hutchings and Yvon Guillard
– first collaboration between Strut and Heavenly Sweetness
– touring around album across Europe during 2016-7

This compilation contains a wide variety styles, from classic dance-floor fillers to lesser known gems. A more accessible ‘digger’s delight’ with an emphasis on quality tracks, not just songs only worth having for a 2 second sample. Mann and Francisco Aguabella. This volume is the 5th in a series of legendary ‘Strange Games…’ records, this time compiled by the one and only DJ Spinna.

The Halftone Soceity Rhythm Section – Don’t Look Any Further/Caribbean Queen
Friday, January 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Halftone Soceity Rhythm Section – Don’t Look Any Further/Caribbean Queen

Image: 1601828 CB Records and Mophono’s Halftone Society is proud to announce
the first single from their new offshoot. Dubbed (the) “Halftone
Society Rhythm Section”, it features some of the Bay Area’s most
talented live instrumentalists. The project is a refreshing vocalbased
departure from Mophono’s usual curiously obscure offerings,
as it reimagines two eighties dance floor DJ classics “Don’t Look Any
Further” by Dennis Edwards and “Caribbean Queen” by Billy Ocean.
The demand for this music became very apparent when Mophono’s
“Cut Form Creator Dub” of “Caribbean Queen” was recently featured
on the popular bay area compilation “off the beaten tracks”. On
this new single,“The Halftone Society Rhythm Section” aims to pair
the infectious sheen of eighties boogie with an inviting minimalism
reminiscent of seventies funk standards. Young Aundee’s vocals
channel a pop landscape full of rebellious souls, bankrupt lives and
crumbling nations.
The HSRS’s unpredictable approach to the A-Side, “Don’t Look Any
Further”, finds the listener in a gritty drum heavy distortion bath of
lush Rhodes and melodica choruses. On the B-side, with “Caribbean
Queen”, The HSRS adds a layer of vulnerable grit to the silky original
and expounds upon the island sound with Patrick Korte aka P Dub’s
phenomenal drum work, warm dubs and a massive break down that
calls for a rewind.

• Classic DJ cuts covered in a new and unique way
• Produced by Mophono
• Band’s First release on vinyl

Jess & Crabbe Present – Bazzerk – Changa Tuki Classics
Thursday, May 9th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Jess & Crabbe Present – Bazzerk – Changa Tuki Classics

Available from 19.04.2013

Night Hawks / Scott Woods – Chicken Grabber/ Chicken Rock
Sunday, March 31st, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Night Hawks / Scott Woods – Chicken Grabber/ Chicken Rock

Image: 1579714 Something of a poultry offering here as we ransack the coop to pull out these two Chicken-based oddities. On the top side is the Nite Hawks (a very early incarnation of the Crusaders – yes them of ‘Street Life’ success and ignominy) with their wondrous, slinky instrumental number ‘Chicken Grabber’, a jazzy, bump and grinder punctuated by frenzied clucking from the hens and deranged muttering from their unknown pursuer. Made infamous by its appearance in John Waters’ notorious schlock-fest ‘Pink Flamingos’, ‘Chicken Grabber’ is surely one of the best songs about chicken ever made. That might seem a weak claim on the face of it, but then just consider the hundreds, perhaps thousands of other records inspired by our fowl feathered friends, and then consider that on the flip-side of this little rooster, we serve up Scott Wood’s ‘Chicken Rock’ – another rock & roll curio with a decidedly unhinged air, and another of the very best chicken sides ever waxed. El Santo Golpe – La Cosecha / El Camotal
Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on El Santo Golpe – La Cosecha / El Camotal

Image: 1618101 Part of the next wave in the thriving Afro-Latin alternative scene of greater Los Angeles & The Inland Empire, El Santo Golpe’s debut release on Names You Can Trust leaves its mark with a very personal fusion of Central American & Caribbean folkloric traditions. This influence of different styles & cultures across the divergent regions is on full display, from the time honored rhythms and percussion of Garifuna music, to those lovingly reconizable lead elements such as the acordeón in cumbia (as heard in La Cosecha) or the jarana in son jorocho (as heard in El Camotal). It is through this uniquely American, and more specifically, Californian experience, that this group of peers has been able to come together to form a new set of multi-cultural roots and attitudes. The result of this two-sided debut is a fusion of raw percussion, unbridled energy & live performance. Two heavy sides to be celebrated within the dance.

Over the past few years orchestral instrumental music from outside the classical establishment has become huge, and Neil Leiter and Margaret Hermant of the Belgian Echo Collective have witnessed the evolution and extraordinary rise of this movement right up close. They’ve worked with some of the most important players, including Stars Of The Lid, Dustin O’Halloran and Adam Wiltze’s A Winged Victory For The Sullen and O’Halloran’s solo projects, as well as Jóhann Jóhannsson. And though the Echo Collective members themselves very much do come from within the classical music establishment, they don’t care which side of the fence they are seen to be on.
It was this which grabbed the attention of German music hub !K7’s new sub-label 7K! – who have signed them for a two album deal: first to release the Amnesiac reinterpretation, then for a record of Echo Collective’s own compositions. Not only that but they have been signed for publishing by Mutesong, which led to a hook-up with Mute mainstays Erasure, re-arranging and re-recording their latest album World Be Gone with classical instrumentation backing Andy Bell’s vocals. This ability to flow easily from black metal to Radiohead, from Erasure to Stars Of The Lid shows exactly what kind of musicians Echo Collective are.
The album, which features artwork by the renowned photographer and artist Roger Ballen, will be released on 30 March on CD, 2LP and digital platforms. Available from 30.03.2018

The Shacks – Haze

Image: 1617447 Fronted by 19-year-old singer/bassist Shannon Wise and 21-year-old guitarist/producer Max Shrager, The Shacks are already well on their way to becoming one
of the year’s big breakouts, and their remarkable debut album, ‘Haze,’ solidifies their status as a band with ability to deliver on the well-deserved buzz.
When Max and Shannon met in high school, a bond was created that has permeated their music since the Shacks first incarnation four years ago. That chemistry
lies at the heart of ‘Haze,’ a record so hypnotic and seductive that it feels more like a whispered late-night secret than a young band’s debut. Produced together by
Shrager and Big Crown co-founder Leon Michels (who’s played with Bradley, Sharon Jones, and Fields in addition to working with The Arcs, Lana Del Rey, and
countless others), the album was recorded in bits and pieces between Shrager’s basement and Michels’ Diamond Mine studio, which the Observer dubbed “the
Shangri La of Soul.”
‘Haze’ opens with the title track, which is, appropriately enough, the first song Shrager and Wise ever wrote together. It’s a spare, smoky tune that shimmers and
sparkles as it shifts in and out of focus, and it’s an ideal gateway into the immersive world of The Shacks. On the breezy “Follow Me,” they channel the infectious
charm of a 60’s girl group, while the soulful “My Name Is” grooves its way through a mesmerizing take on 70’s funk. Much like a dream, the songs often merge the
familiar and the unfamiliar, constructing their own psychedelic reality full of beauty and yearning, all fueled by Wise’s breathy vocals and the unmistakable electricity
of a wildly creative band truly inhabiting their music. “Birds” makes brilliant use of Daptone drum hero Homer Steinwess’s impeccable feel behind the kit, while the
50’s ballad-meets-baroque pop of “Cryin’” tips its cap to Roy Orbison and John Lennon as Shrager takes over lead vocals, and the soulful shuffle of “Texas” belies
a dark and violent undercurrent ripped from the headlines. Through it all permeates an unshakable sense that this is a group performing just for you. “Nobody” finds
the Shacks re-interpreting Phil Spector’s Wagnerian approach to rock & roll, complete with sweeping strings and darkly innocent lyrics. The 13 songs featured on
Haze plays out like the soundtrack to some long lost 16mm film, beckoning you into their grainy, saturated world of analog beauty.
In the short time that they’ve been together, The Shacks have already made an impressive mark. Their hypnotic cover of Ray Davies’ “This Strange Effect”
soundtracked a global iPhone commercial, one which actually stars Wise herself, and their self-titled EP earned the band dates with St. Paul & The Broken Bones,
Chicano Batman, and their Big Crown Records labelmates Lee Fields & The Expressions.

Gabriele Poso – Awakening

C1 The Night Falls

D2 Words Never Work Extended Mix

Making his BBE debut in 2017 with compilation album ‘The Languages Of Tambores’, described by The Vinyl Factory as “ancestral, evocative and visceral”, Italian multiinstrumentalist Gabriele Poso returns to the label with his new LP ‘Awakening’. Since his debut album ‘From The Genuine World’, released in 2008 on Osunlade’s Yoruba Records, Gabriele has amassed an impressive catalogue of solo work and guest appearances,
not to mention a hectic schedule of live performances. Perhaps Gabriele’s most rounded work to date, ‘Awakening’ captures an artist in full bloom, examining a crossroads between creative and personal paths.
“The birth of my eldest son Viktor caused me to question my career in music and explore other, more ‘secure’ options, but thanks to my wife I quickly realised that to be different from your neighbor doesn’t make you wrong. After all, in this life, does anyone really have any security? So actually Viktor and my family have become my super power: they teach me to believe in myself more then I ever did before. This album is all about that realization, that Awakening.” Encompassing Afro-latin, jazz, soul and dance music elements, glued together by Poso’s distinctive layered live percussion sounds, ‘Awakening’ is peppered with guest
performances and production touches from a talented series of friends. As Gabriele puts it “I like to surround my music with the people I love and want to spend my time with.” A deeply rooted and spiritual project, a few of the tracks featured on ‘Awakening’ will be familiar to those lucky enough to catch Gabriele Poso on tour over the last 12 months, not least his reimagining of the Roy Ayers classic ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’. From the stunning cover art by Elvira Gerardi which features Gabriele’s first born son Viktor, to the special music contained within, this album’s message is clear, although as Gabriele succinctly points out: when we talk about love, ‘words never work.’

Ernesto Chahoud’s ‘Taitu’ is a collection of soul-fuelled stompers straight from the dancefloors of 1970s Addis Ababa. A breathless journey through the unique Ethio sound that bands were forging at the time, the 24-track compilation is the result of the Lebanese DJ and crate digger’s decadelong love affair with the ‘golden age’ of Ethiopian music.
Among the musical gems featured are 7”s by some of the heavyweights of the scene including the godfather of Ethio jazz Mulatu Astatke and Alemayehu Eshete, the vocalist dubbed the ‘Ethiopian Elvis’, alongside tracks by more obscure artists such as Merawi Yohannis and Birkineh Wurga.
For ‘Taitu’, Chahoud has selected 24 of his essential Ethio-Soul 7”s, that never leave his DJ box, and together they capture this opportune moment in Ethiopian music history that saw bands experiment with an armful of influences: gliding through R&B, rock & roll, jazz, funk, soul and boogaloo. What came out was a distinctly Ethiopian interpretation: pentatonic scales, horn-driven melodies and soul-shattering vocals sung in Amharic.
The songs are difficult to box in to one genre but they share a simplicity and rawness, added to by their lo-fi quality – with many recordings made in rudimentary studios with only a couple of mics for the entire band. From the R&B stomper ‘Honey Baby’ by Alemayehu Eshete to Astatke’s swaggering ethnic-jazz instrumental ‘Emnete’ and the bluesy melancholic vocals of Hirut Bekele on ‘Ewnetegna Feker’, ‘Taitu’ is
a window in on the exciting records being made in Ethiopia in the 1970s.

Key Selling Points:
– An extensive guide to an experimental period in Ethiopia’s music history during the 1960s and 1970s
– A diverse compilation that takes in everything from Ethio jazz and soul to dancefloor clappers and rhythm and blues
– The debut compilation from Lebanese DJ and crate digger Ernesto Chahoud who’s hunted down these treasures for years
– Rare Ethiopian tracks, many of which are compiled and released on vinyl for the first time
– Full press, radio and digital media campaign in all key territories
