It’s a big one, a third previously unreleased Raspuitins stash LP, half of which was thought to be lost. Just recently it turned up in a Chicago warehouse and we managed to get out hands on it. Then with the blessing of Paul Coleman we reunited the masters with what was in the curtom archive […]

Born at Scotland’s post-Punk crossroads in 1979, Boots For Dancing kicked down the boundary walls of a played-out scene and introduced the UK to a more funky way of doing punk. Hugely popular as a live act, often wiping the floor with the bands they were supporting, Boots was something genuinely ahead of the epoch’s […]

Grupo Magnético – Vampiras
Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Grupo Magnético – Vampiras

Image: 1612053 Athens of the North does not release new material very often, when we do it has to be up to standard and Grupo Magnético most undeniably up to standard. Recording a sound from a certain period is notoriously difficult to pull off, Grupo Magnético smashed that 70s boogaloo sound so much so people I played the tapes to thought it was old tapes I had dug up.

BAB – Party & Get on Down
Saturday, January 14th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on BAB – Party & Get on Down

Image: 1608297 One of the best mid-tempo disco raritys (and we mean rare) to come out the Deepfunk scene. When Keb Darge first played ‘Party & Get On Down’ in the early 2000s in Soho it put a few noses out of joint as it was such a departure from the deepfunk driving take no prisoner sound. True to Keb’s Scottish stubbornness and like any real DJ he stuck to his guns and created a dance floor favourite. Athens of the north bring BAB to 12″ for the first time, not only that but its a nice wee extended cut transferred direct from the master tapes. No brainier if you got class.

The Second Re$$urrection – Keep On Keeping On / Wise Up
Thursday, October 1st, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Second Re$$urrection – Keep On Keeping On / Wise Up

Image: 1600058 Two unreleased disco funk bangers from Joe Tex backing band THE SECOND RE$$URRECTION. Dug out from Sonny Cravers Stanson Records archive, The band did release one ultra rare disco/modern 45 which goes for $3000+ all day long also coming to Athens of the north soon.

One of the most widely travelled, widely heard unknown groups in the world. A band of serious Funk musicians who have shared the stage with the elite of the elite. They have shared the stage with Jean Carne, Boston, Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, Rufus & Chaka Khan, The Isley Brothers, Shalamar, Tavares, Rufus Thomas, Tyrone Davis, Barbara Lynn, Millie Jackson, The Brothers Johnson, B.T. Express, Brick, Frank Lucas, The Drifters & Blue Magic. They won equal acclaim when they played alongside Earth, Wind & Fire at The CBS Family Affair. They performed at New York’s Rialto Theatre, The Apollo, and toured East and West Germany. They performed for the movie premier of Rudy Ray Moore’s, Petey Wheatstraw – The Devil’s Son-In-Law at Chicago’s Regal Theatre.

The original name of the group was THE SIX DEGREES SOUTH (A Very rare funk45 I released when working at Jazzman Records) based out of Lawton Oklahoma. A nomadic group, they completed a 3 year trek primarily booked at military bases across the nation. They also played a variety of college and university towns, ski-lodges, various clubs and hotel ballrooms. They initially dabbled in recording producing a vinyl 45′ single entitled, Loving You Is Too Far Out. Upon returning to home-base the group met the legendary soul singer, Joe Tex. Being into funk, we were not all that familiar with his soul sound. He explained what he wanted to do and the end results of what could be accomplished. The band, already being self-contained and autonomous seized the opportunity to utilize not only Tex’s fame in the music/radio world but his label connections. Unknowingly, this group almost single-handedly launched Tex’s career back into the spotlight allowing him to re-emerge and re-invent himself after a 5 year sabbatical.

They played, wrote and produced-in-part Joe Tex’s Bumps & Bruises album containing the mega-hit, Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman. This culminated into Tex’s first gold album, won a Grammy nomination and was #86 on Billboard’s 1978 year-end chart.

On the flip side the bands own LP was shelfed after the single “Smoke in the Disco” did not live up to Stansons Records expectations, as these things go it later became a huge modern/northern soul record and is coveted by collectors all over the world, so lets share a bit more of the Lost LP…,. Fred Williams – Tell Her / The Dance Got Old
Saturday, January 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Fred Williams – Tell Her / The Dance Got Old

Image: 1594815 This record is as good as soul gets, no argument, more than the sum its parts, the perfect moment captured. Few records are coveted by so many rare 45 collectors as Fred Williams only outing on Solo records, hence a clean copy recently changed hands for £3000

I first heard this in the early 2000’s when hardcore US Collector Dante Carfange & Chad Weekley (Memphix records) came to Edinburgh to D.J at our weekly club ‘Motherfunk’. After their U.K tour many deepfunk collectors went after the single but the record has remained elusive.

Dante Carfange went on to compile the amazing Numero Group Compilation ‘Eccentric Soul: Smart’s Palace’ which included both these sides. After meeting Rob and Ken from Numero Group in Edinburgh last year they kindly agreed to licence Fred Williams to ‘Athens of the North’ as a single so here we are at last, this amazing piece of music is finally affordable on vinyl. Just buy it.

Milton Wright – Original Friends and Buddies
Tuesday, January 6th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Milton Wright – Original Friends and Buddies

Image: 1594509 Athens of the North is proud to present Milton Wright’s stunning alternate version of the now Classic Miami soul LP ‘Friends & Buddies’. An altogether more stripped down, folky soul affair than its highly respected, much sampled brother is now available on Vinyl, CD and Digital for the very first time. Shelved at the last minute then re-recorded and overdubbed, only a few promo copies of this early version escaped from the studio and are deep in the collections of the very few previously in the know.

The master tapes burnt in a fire at T.K Disco in Miami in the early 80s so even the label has not heard this in 30 Years. Many reissues of the second version of Friends & Buddies LP have come and gone, but Milton’s original vision has remained hidden until now. As searingly honest and stunningly soulful as any seminal Marvin Gaye or Terry Callier LP, it stands tall amongst its exceptional peers as one of the true pillars of quality 70s soul.

– Unreleased Alternate version
– New sleeve notes by Milton Wright
– Super-heavy high quality tip-on sleeve!

Various – Disco 2.0 (2LP+MP3)
Saturday, May 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Disco 2.0 (2LP+MP3)

Image: 1604051 Disco is back! From Paris to Melbourne, Berlin or Athens, a new blend of 70s inspired disco sound is currently taking the dancefloors by storm with artists like Monika, L’Impératrice or LeonxLeon, creating a stir on the international scene. Paying their dues to the pure form of Disco, these new artists, far from mimicking the clichés, are adding an unmistakable millennium twist to the genre. This is Disco 2.0

It’s all down to a few men in New York with a love for Philly Soul and hypnotic grooves. In the early 70s they defined the club culture from scratch: DJs David Mancuso, Nicky Siano, Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles, Label bosses Mel Sheren and Neil Bogart, remixer extraordinaire Tom Moulton were instrumental in shaping a new sound that changed music forever and paved the way for house music and its many sub-genres decades later.

Today, a new scene is shaping up, updating the classic sound of Disco. Young artists like Marvin & Guy in Italy, L’Imperatrice and LeonxLeon in France, or Monika in Athens and the US are producing a fresh blend of Disco-inspired music which is neither a copy of the past glory, nor totally in line of the popular Nu-Disco genre that has flourished primarily in Northern Europe.

The WEWANTSOUNDS crew has carefully selected here the cream of this new Disco wave with the coolest tracks around and added a little nod to the heydays in the form of a rare 1976 instrumental by Sounds of Inner City from the cult West End Records label and mixed by the legendary Tom Moulton.

This tasteful selection will give you a fresh insight into the Disco rebirth, pouring into the mix a huge dose of sensuality, rhythms and an irresistible craving for love… That’s Disco 2.0!

Various – Henry Stone’s Miami Sound (2LP)
Friday, June 12th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Henry Stone’s Miami Sound (2LP)

Image: 1597739 When Terry Kane – a sound engineer who was barely twenty years old at the time – built an 8-track recording studio above Henry Stone’s office space in the Hialeah area of Miami, he probably never envisaged that he was laying the bedrock for a creative hub that would spawn over 25 gold records and over 100 million record sales worldwide. In the process, it would help to make Henry Stone a legend of American music.

At one end of the spectrum, warehouse boy turned global superstar Harry Wayne Casey – better known as leader of K.C. & The Sunshine Band – was pumping out disco classics on a massive scale with ubiquitous airplay and sell-out shows. At the other, Rodney Matthew and his group Formula 1, were relying on the might of the T.K. distribution machine to propel them into the spotlight. As remarkable as their 1977 masterpiece on Du-Vern records was, it inevitably failed to have the seismic impact of The Sunshine Band’s commercial dance pop.

For every success story like T-Connection, with their firebrand funk-disco fusion and major label achievements, there were equally talented acts such as Stevens And Foster who also called on Stone’s services to showcase their vision: judging by the scarcity of original copies of their self-written and produced modern soul jewel on Jerri Records, they also failed to reach beyond the Sunshine state, save for the rarified ears of collectors and connoisseurs.

The sheer amount of records that came out of those modest premises at 495 SE 10th Court – about 8km from Downtown Miami (as the pink flamingo flies) – is mind boggling. With a huge roster of in-house labels as well as production and distribution deals, label boss Henry Stone was a passionate, busy, and exceptionally well connected man.

Stone would nurture the early careers of the likes of million seller Betty Wright, as well as provide a platform for Milton Wright and Leno Phillips (her older brothers) to express their creativity. Clarence Reid (AKA Blowfly) and Willie Clark penned a raft of amazing tracks for acts such as Jimmy ‘Bo’ Horne and Little Beaver (AKA Willie Hale, who would also write a wealth of material for others), while T.K. in-house band Miami’s own Robert Moore also released records on yet another T.K. imprint, Blue Candle.

The music scene in Miami and indeed, Florida, at the time was fertile and moved quickly with the times, there were hit-makers and risk-takers, shining stars and those who never went far.

As a living document of Henry Stone’s remarkable legacy, the diverse styles and ideas coming out of Miami-Dade County and beyond, as well as a glimpse at the successes and near-misses achieved by a dazzling array of artists at the time, this collection serves as an invaluable insight.
