Justin Carter – The Leaves Fall
Friday, January 13th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Justin Carter – The Leaves Fall

Image: 1608035 Mister Saturday Night present The Leaves Fall the debut album from co label head Justin Carter .

Tracklist:
1. Great Destroyer
2. In*nite Pieces
3. Know It All
4. With The Old Breed
5. The Island
6. What Can You Tell Your Children About Hope?
7. Leaves
8. A Presence

A delicate collection of songs for meditation on spiritual struggle, The Leaves Fall is a window into the parallel reality of Justin Carter. Centered on his intimate vocals, pointed with hints of Arthur Russell and John Martyn, the eight tracks are buttressed by warm acoustic guitars, vibraphones, organs and flourished with modern production. They are familiar but distant, like ghosts living in the present. Carter grew up in a country house in rural North Carolina, a place with a pecan tree and abandoned train tracks in the front yard. On long car rides from home to his dad’s work as a school teacher, his ears were filled with the prog of Yes, the vocals of Al Jarreau and the complexity of Christopher Parkening’s take on Bach. It was his father, who himself has moonlighted as a guitar player and songwriter for nearly 50 years, that taught Carter to sing and play in his early teens.
The Leaves Fall was written on and off over the course of about five years, a secret to most. Carter is more familiar, alongside Eamon Harkin, as co-founder of popular New York parties Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday, and their label offshoot, Mister Saturday Night Records. As the Mister thrived, his songwriting continued to tick along in the background, days and weeks stolen here and there to write and record in various locations – from remote studios in the Catskills to basements in Venice Beach.
The album features Jason Lindner, pianist on Bowie’s final masterpiece, Blackstar, cello from Archie Pelago’s Greg Heffernan, and programming by LIES Records and The Trilogy Tapes producer Marcos Cabral. It was mixed by Benjamin Tierney, who also worked his magic on Kamasi Washington’s The Epic. It finds its context in the world of Planetarium, a new listening session established by Carter and his Mister Saturday Night DJ partner, Eamon Harkin, where live music is mixed amongst hours of records to create an immersive, communal listening experience focused on quality hi-fi sound in non-traditional spaces, the album will presented in this manner when toured.
“Nothing makes me happier than to see people letting go. My ambition in all my creative work is to make moments where that can happen. As a DJ, I use others’ music to create those moments, but it’s always been in me to make my own music for that purpose. After twenty-five years of writing music for myself, it makes me really happy to have something to share with others.” – Justin Carter

Hierzulande bekannt geworden durch “To The Top”, dem Hit mit Gentleman, u.a. Available from 10.02.2017

J-Zone – Backyard Breaks
Friday, November 20th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on J-Zone – Backyard Breaks

Image: 1600998 Producer/ drummer/ writer/ DJ/ MC J-Zone returns to the fold with Backyard Breaks, a follow-up to his debut drum break LP, 2014’s Lunch Breaks. This 18-cut offering continues where its predecessor left off, but offers more variety in a smaller package. Where Lunch Breaks channeled the drum mojo of the late 1960s exclusively, Backyard Breaks explores a wider sonic timeline of drumming and recording. The more focused sounds of the mid and late 1970s are also explored here, as well as some of the less orthodox rhythms and fills from those eras, giving the sampling producer a mixture of sounds to work with. Percussionist Ray May adds congas to a handful of tracks to mix things up and capture the b-boy spirit, while more options in the way of mikes, drum kits, snares and cymbals – in addition to more head room with the recording levels for more producer control – make Backyard Breaks a well-rounded follow-up to its predecessor.

Between the recording of Lunch Breaks and Backyard Breaks, J-Zone has done studio drumming and sample replays for Danger Mouse, Marco Polo, RA the Rugged Man, Czarface (7L & Esoteric and Inspektah Deck), Apathy and many others, as well as providing drum tracks for film scores like CNN’s Fresh Dressed and the Stretch and Bobbito Documentary. Meeting the demands of producers and musicians, constructive feedback from Lunch Breaks and continuous research and practice have all aided J-Zone in presenting a more useful and versatile break record for producers looking for a classic break beat sound.

Holy moly, the year 2005 is almost over. And so many changes happened we can’t even remember. Most recently we had to congratulate Mrs. Merkel for becoming the first female chancellor of Germany, but honestly nobody really cared. As always the much more important news came from overseas. Have you heard that our beloved newlyweds Jessica and Nick split up after they had stolen the hearts of audiences everywhere? And Britney sold Kevin’s Ferrari. Oh boy…But through all these times of melancholy one thing will remain the same and stay forever, and that’s our pure love for music.

So in good ol’ tradition we asked around what Groove Attack’s employees have been listening to in 2005. Read on ‘cuz this list is for you …

Same procedure as every year. Once again we asked around what Groove Attack’s employees have been listening to during the past year.

A sure thing in 2004 was the huge comeback of house music. Moody 4 to the floor rhythms ruled the office. Theo everywhere. And there was the return of rock music. A sort of Eagles Of Death Metal rock music. Hot and sweaty. Maybe we’ll grow out of the hip hop box real soon. But what the hell do I know? Just wondering what the next year has in store for everyone. Read on ‘cuz this list is for you …

Sun Ra – Discipline 27-II (RSD)
Friday, March 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sun Ra – Discipline 27-II (RSD)

Image: 1609002 Strut and Art Yard present a special release for Record Store Day 2017, the first ever official reissue of Sun Ra’s revered Discipline 27-II LP from 1972.
The recordings for the album took place on the 19 and 20 October 1972 at Streeterville Studios , Chicago, with the largest Arkestra line-up Sun Ra had yet taken into a studio session. The date was produced by Impulse! and Riverside veteran Ed Michel and , for the first time, the Arkestra was recorded in quadraphonic sound.
Of the two releases eventually prepared from the session, Space Is The Place initially stole the limelight, becoming one of the Arkestra’s most celebrated records.
Discipline 27-II, by contrast, would remain a somewhat mysterious occult twin. Although it was one of the few Saturn releases to feature a full colour cover
, the album featured slight differences to the master, cover and labels on a series of different pressings. The album opens with ‘Pan-Afro’, a chugging, skittering post-bop excursion in 6/4 , featuring a solo by John Gilmore followed by the dirgelike ‘Discipline 8’ and the smoky, avant-blues classic ‘Neptune’, blessed by a scrawling Marshall Allen solo. Perhaps the album’s main event is a stately performance of ‘Discipline 27-II’ , launching the listener into the deep poetics of the astroblack mythos. Echoed closely by June Tyson, and then by the rest of the Space Ethnic Voices, Ra moves from an explanation of his mission and a reproach to the people of Earth, before offering incantations to the angel realm. ‘We got some news for you,’ he advises wryly: ‘the world ended three thousand years ago.’
We are all stranded on ‘the other side of the end of time’ , in a world that already ended three millennia back , at the end of the Egyptian New Kingdom. It’s after the end of the world!
This first official reissue of Discipline 27-II was prepared in conjunction with Art Yard and Sun Ra LLC. The album is restored from the original master tapes and features complete original artwork and new sleeve notes by Francis Gooding.

KEY POINTS:
– First ever official reissue of classic Sun Ra album
– Officially licensed from Sun Ra LLC and restored from original tapes
– includes the full 25 min. title track
– new package features all original artwork and new sleeve note by Francis Gooding

PACKAGING: 1LP IN SINGLE SLEEVE WITH 12” INSERT SHEET

I Roam the Cosmos. I visit a Planet now and then My visits are so seldom that sometimes The people on the Planet forget who I am Whenever that happens, I have no choice But to make them remember.

And since so many men have roamed this Planet Saying so many things that never proved of worth To the Planet I will have to do what I don’t want to do I will have to impress upon Every man, woman, and child upon this Planet Who I am So that they will NEVER forget who I am.

All the people are asleep There is no one to give me the glory I deserve See the splendours of my Universe I made it with my very own hands.

You think because my Universe is so big that you are of no importance to me? You thought I had forsaken you If I did, why am I here now?

The Sun is your very best friend Greets you every morning, “Hello, my friends” Bids you goodbye every night “Goodbye, my friends, see you in the morning.”

The Sun is your very best servant Serving you day and night The Sun never sleeps The Sun never sleeps.

The Universe sent me to converse with you But how can I talk to every man, woman, and child At the same time?

I, because of the majesty upon Planet Earth, Must ask the volcanoes of Earth to speak of my glory I must ask the winds of Earth to speak of my glory I must ask the Earth itself to quake and tremble.

At my presence upon the Earth must ask the Earth to change its orbits And its journey among the Stars So that it can change the destiny of every person Upon this Planet.

I must nullify astrology I must nullify all prophecies I must create a different kind of World That is more suitable for me That I might visit this Planet, and feel at home.

an “angel race“, Sun Ra. During the Summer of 1976, he had stormed Montreux
and toured West Africa with one of the greatest of his full-sized Arkestras
before embarking on occasional solo concerts for the f irst time, emphasising
his prowess at the piano. Although he had always played the blues within
Arkestra sets, he now summoned up the rolling tradition of blues piano,
recalling Otis Spann, Avery Parrish, stride and ricky-tick styles.
He made two solo albums for Paul Bley ’s Improvising Artists label (’Solo Piano’
and ’St. Louis Blues’) before travelling to Rome. For the concert, featured
here, Ra brought in drummer Luqman Ali, who had been part of the Arkestra
during the band’s early Chicago years, and vocalist Thomas Thaddeus aka
Eddie Thomas. Thomas was a percussionist, dancer and “incense dude“ with
the Arkestra throughout the late ‚70s period. He would appear again on Ra’s
’Lanquidity ’ album for Philly Jazz in ’79.
During this intimate concert, Ra takes us through piano and synthesizer
renditions of Arkestra staples like ’Love In Outer Space’, ’Space Is The Place’
and ’Calling Planet Earth’ but also explores a selection of jazz standards.
Among them, we hear the f irst ever released Ra version of the 1930s staple
’I Cover The Waterfront’ alongside a dissonant version of ’Sometimes I Feel
Like A Motherless Child’ and ’St. Louis Blues’. Ra’s ties to Italy would continue
the following year as he recorded three acclaimed albums for Horo Records,
run by f ilmmaker turned label owner, Aldo Sinesio.
Following 2014’s Marshall Allen compilation, ’In the Orbit Of Ra’ and 2015’s
Gilles Peterson-curated ’To Those Of Earth… And Other Worlds’, Strut and
Art Yard join forces once more for the f irst release anywhere of ’In Some Far
Place: Roma ’77’. Recorded direct from the sound board and mastered from f irst
generation reel to reel tapes, this is one of the very few trio albums by Sun Ra
ever to be released. The release features rare photos from recently deceased
photographer H.L. Lindenmaier with sleeve notes by the Sun Ra Arkestra’s
Knoel Scott.

Sun Ra – Planets Of Life Or Death

Image: 1595298 Following 2014’s landmark compilation presented by Marshall Allen, ‘In the Orbit Of Ra’, Strut and Art Yard join forces once more for the first release anywhere of ‘Planets Of Life Or Death’. Recorded direct from the sound board and mastered from first generation reel to reel, now available on CD.

Enlightenment is…. our tomorrow… It has no plane…. of sorrow

Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra ’Enlightenment’
Within their 1973 European tour, Sun Ra and his Arkestra had just completed
a residency at the legendary Gibus in Paris in October before travelling to
Amiens for a Sunday afternoon concert. Those filing into the city’s Maison de
la Culture that day would have little idea of the intense, visceral experience
that awaited them. “Sun Ra’s use of the Arkestra as his instrument in an
onslaught of sound, colour and movement stimulated and even shocked the
senses and the shakras of audience participants onto a higher plane of spirit
consciousness,“ explains the Arkestra’s Knoel Scott.
On Side 1, the session kicks off with the theatrical overture, ’Enlightenment’ as
Sun Ra and vocalist June Tyson invite the audience to “be of our space world“.
Ra then moves into a rare instrumental version of ’Love In Outer Space’,
transforming the perennial Arkestra classic into a raw, ritualistic experience:
“this was a vehicle for the Arkestra’s space dancers. Close your eyes and
imagine them writhing across the stage in celestial homage,“ explains Scott.
Side 2 of the album opens with the glistening ’Lights On A Satellite’, a feature
for the spiritual tenor sax of John Gilmore, playing in unison with trumpeter
Kwame Hadi. Closing track, the epic, chaotic, anxious ’Discipline 27-II / What
Planet Is This’ moves from abstract, freeform keyboard work from Sun Ra to
a walking groove as Sun Ra and June Tyson take a thinly veiled psychedelic
swipe at life on earth: “If this is a planet of life, why do people die here? “
Following 2014’s landmark compilation presented by Marshall Allen, ’In the

Sun Ra And His Arkestra – In The Orbit Of Ra
Tuesday, September 16th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sun Ra And His Arkestra – In The Orbit Of Ra

Image: 1591412 “Sun Ra said he came from Saturn, because white America treated him like an alien, like a creature from outer space, so he became one, an anarcho-emperor of the fantastic, who made it to the moon before America or Russia, because the moon was nowhere near as far out as he could really go.“ Paul Morley

Strut and Art Yard join forces for a special release to mark what would have been Sun Ra’s 100th birthday with ’In The Orbit Of Ra’, a new collection curated by the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current bandleader, Marshall Allen. Bringing together Ra highights from over 25 years of music, the album is the first internationally released compilation to provide an introduction to the music of Sun Ra, curated personally by the Arkestra and mastered from the original tapes.

With a catalogue of well over a hundred albums, Sun Ra forged his own direction in music from the mid ‘50s until his passing in 1993, injecting space age cosmic philosophy, ancient Egyptian history and lyrical poetry into a unique and freeform jazz sound. His music evolved constantly with relentless rehearsals, live gigging and recording schedules, developing a second-sense chemistry with his fellow Arkestra band members. Together, their emphasis would often be on improvisation and “the moment”, constantly re-interpreting and evolving their sound. Elements of magic and ritual would regularly feature in their performances and would lend the Arkestra a mystical aura. As Sun Ra himself said, “I have many names, some call me Mr. Ra, others call me Mr. Re. You can call me Mr. Mystery.”

For this exclusive new collection, Strut join forces with Artyard to gain access to the inner sanctum of the Arkestra. In addition to the track selection, the release features recollections and contributions from some of the core Arkestra line-up including Marshall Allen, Michael Ray, Knoel Scott and Danny Ray Thompson. For the music, Allen’s selection takes us through the huge variety and intricacy of the Arkestra’s work covering the ‘60s to early ‘80s, from the celestial blues of ‘Spontaneous Simplicity’ and ‘Plutonian Nights’ to the urgent jazz of ‘Rocket Number Nine Take Off For Planet Venus’ and ‘Dance Of The Cosmo Aliens’. The album features an exclusive previously unreleased Sun Ra track from the Art Yard archives, the acoustic ‘Trying To Put The Blame On Me’ recorded live in Rome in 1977, along with a previously unreleased Part 1 of ‘Reflects Motion’ from 1962 and an unheard extended version of ‘Island In The Sun’ from the late ‘60s.

‘In The Orbit Of Ra’ is released on 2CD, 2LP and digital formats. Physical formats feature full interview with Marshall Allen along with rare and previously unpublished photos by Val Wilmer.

Sunny & The Sunliners – The Missing Link (BF RSD)
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sunny & The Sunliners – The Missing Link (BF RSD)

Image: 1615557 $2 from each copy of The Missing Link sold on Black Friday Record Store Day 2017 will go to The Greater Houston Community Foundation to help with relief for areas of Texas that were affected by Hurricane Harvey When it comes to living legends in the Texas and Latin Music pantheon, few have been at it longer and are more revered by their fans and peers than vocalist, songwriter and bandleader Sunny Ozuna. Born and raised in San Antonio, where he still resides, Sunny became a star right out of high school in the late ‘50s and hasn’t looked back in the six decades since.
After releasing dozens of albums since the mid-1960s (in Spanish and English), Sunny still keeps a busy schedule and loves performing as much as he did as a
teenager. His classic 45s regularly change hands for hundreds of dollars among collectors around the world, affirming his timeless appeal.
As a logical next step after Big Crown’s excellent (and Sunny-approved) Mr. Brown Eyed Soul compilation from September, the label has started digging into the vaults of Sunny’s Key-Loc Records label to unearth some legit soul classics – which are hard to find even in San Antonio, and clean originals will cost you a pretty penny if you ever luck into one – and have not been on vinyl since the late ‘60s. Each has been remastered and includes original album art.
Second in the reissue series is The Missing Link, a 10-cut, all instrumental album, and the tracklist is a wild ride indeed. Ranging from hip soul – James Brown’s
“Soul Pride,” The Inclines’ Muscle Shoals groover “Pressure Cooker,” and the Meters classic “Cissy Strut” – to a wide swath of ‘60s Texas Latin party essentials (“Uno,” “Rosita Bonita” and “La Pecosita”), the Sunliners are in top form all throughout. It won’t take much to envision a San Antonio backyard BBQ in the early ‘70s with this long player spinning in the background, on repeat.
Instrumental party albums were all the rage back when this hit in the late ‘60s, and Sunny Ozuna and crew show here that they could groove with the best of them. Throw it on, break out the back deck smoker, and let the good tunes roll.

Talibam, Matt Nelson & Robin Stabinsky – Hard Vibe
Friday, August 11th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Talibam, Matt Nelson & Robin Stabinsky – Hard Vibe

Image: 1610947 ESP-Disk present two albums, HARD VIBE & Endgame of the Anthropocene from wild NY Crew Talibam

Track Listing:
A1. Infinite Hard Vibe Pt. 1
B1. Infinite Hard Vibe Pt. 2

Personnel/Credits: Matthew Mottel: Fender Rhodes, synthesizer, Matt Nelson: tenor saxophone, Kevin Shea: drums, Ron Stabinsky: Hammond B3 organ, John Olson (Wolf Eyes):
Overview: Talibam! delights in creating music that cannot be pinned down within the safe-spaces of existing genres. With each new album, Talibam! reinvents their methodological
palette in order to bolster a fresh clarity of joyous auditory surprise, something their fans have come to depend on. Talibam! focuses on compositional clarity, with reverence for their diverse interest in genre. On this new album they push the pulse of Motorik rhythm through a Psychedelic Jazz filter. This time out, they have created a sonic edifice so
radical, so intricate in its density, that additional hands were required to bring it to life, thus was born the Talibam! Hard Vibe Band with Matt Nelson (Battle Trance, tUnE-yArDs) and Ron Stabinsky (Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Peter Evans Quintet, Relâche) joining Mottel (CSC Funk Band, Alien Whale, Nymph, Platinum Vision) and Village Voice “Best
Drummer in New York” Shea (Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Rhys Chatham, People featuring Mary Halvorson). The scientists in the Talibam! laboratory describe the results thusly: The HARD VIBE composition transforms aspects of rhythm changes into a disciplined sequence of minor key modulations to create a rigorous Hard Vibe obstacle course for
the soloists over a tight melodic/rhythmic grid. Inspired by Herbie Hancock’s ’70s cosmic music, long-form repetitive works such as Miles Davis’s On the Corner, Charlie Parker’s “Salt Peanuts,” Tenor Sax endurance soloists, Albert Ayler’s New Grass, the legendary organ brutality of Larry Young, and the NYC Avant-Garde Rock Minimalism of Rhys Chatham
and Glenn Branca, Hard Vibe maintains an infectious pulse with virtuosic structural jazz improvisation. The Jan Hammer/’80s soundtrack-inspired Keytar payoff (second half of side B) brings festival audiences to its feet in epic dance and ripping solo proportions.

But those are inspirations more than ingredients. As we at ESP-Disk’ are fond of saying, “You never heard such sounds in your life.”

Press Quotes: “Talibam! manage to cast themselves as a powerful rhythm section… It’s pretty cool to hear the Manhattan abstracters create such a cool free jazz/free rock hybrid” – Byron Coley

“Co-conspirators Matthew Mottel and Kevin Shea have something in common with John Coxon and Ashley Wales of Spring Heel Jack in their application of multiple instruments, electronics and collaborators to create an eclectic musical milieu.” – Derek Taylor

“This is wildly new music, fresh in its approach to the collision of melody, harmony and rhythm that makes for quite a soup for the songs to swim in.” – Raul d’Gama Rose
“Amid the fun and exuberance a clever brain and a strong heart of integrity beats.” – Lisa Thatcher Available from 22.09.2017

Computa Games – Cosmic Dispatch EP

Image: 1610224 Production duo Computa Games take the most slamming synth
bass, the crispest drum machine hits, and the overall classic vibes of
80’s dance-funk tunes to new aural heights. Sculpted using the best
modern studio techniques, the “Cosmic Dispatch” EP fuses funk,
disco, soul and electro to various combinations, fitting the feel of
the classiest nightclub or the grittiest backyard party. Each individual
tune on the EP pairs with a unique vocalist or collaborator, as the
project features guests Lovechild, B Bravo, Jackie Rain, Natalita,
and E. Live. There is something killer and personalized on this EP
for every type of dancer, funkster, and headnodder Around.
The Computa Games project is the product of the combined efforts
of Martin Arceneaux and Chris Arenas. Joining their deep roots of
live funk, electronic/live production and DJing, they formed in the fall
of 2012, and quickly released two singles on the Supermart Produce
label. The two debuted their live set at Monarch in San Francisco,
with follow up performances at SXSW in Austin, and Tipitina’s New
Orleans. The group’s third single “Rock Creek (Revenge)” was
released exclusively on Beatport, where it was a featured track on
the site’s Funk/R&B page and stayed in the Funk/R&B Top100 for
nearly 2 months, peaking in the top15. The group then released
the “Grand Design” EP in September 2013 on Super Mart Records,
followed quickly by a remix of The Pendletons single “Let Me Turn
You On” featuring K-Maxx, and then a remix of New Orleans based
funk band Galactic’s “Heart Of Steel”, featuring the legendary Irma
Thomas. In October of 2015 Computa Games released their first
vinyl 7” on ABC records with “Do Your Thing” featuring K-Maxx b/w
“Feel Right 2Nite” which promptly established them in the burgeoning
modern funk scene. Their follow up 7” was released in January 2017
with the single “Computer Rock” b/w “Computer Rock (West Coast
Remix)” on the New Orleans label Super Jock Records. Computer
Rock garnered the duo more accolades with critics and fans alike.
