Soleil – Naturally Me
Friday, July 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Soleil – Naturally Me

Sounds Of The Sirens – For All Our Sins
Tuesday, May 9th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sounds Of The Sirens – For All Our Sins

Image: 1610073 There’s a certain transcendent magic that happens when two contrasting voices coalesce in
perfect harmony – think The Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel or George Jones and
Tammy Wynette. Imperceptibly, they can raise you from the temporal to the spiritual in the
breath of a song, and set you floating among the firmament infused with a sense of wonder
– just like Sound of the Sirens. Exeter-based duo Abbe Martin and Hannah Wood dovetail
beautifully on their debut album, For All Our Sins, a beguiling acoustic pop collection
replete with lyrical sensibility. Already championed by Chris Evans – who declared himself
“blown away” when he heard Sound of the Sirens for the first time, and subsequently invited
them to perform alongside U2 and Take That on TFI Friday last year – they’re certain to
broaden a burgeoning fan base on the back of For All Our Sins. It’s a fan base built up not
just over several sublime EP releases – but also through their live shows, which combine a
natural facility for connecting with their audiences and unforgettable performances
predicated on energy, warmth, humour and, above all, real conviction. Sound of the Sirens
want to both enlighten and entertain, and they want to do it with euphony. For All Our Sins
accomplishes all of the above.

Low Leaf – Palm Psalms: A Light To Resolve All Darkness
Friday, September 9th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Low Leaf – Palm Psalms: A Light To Resolve All Darkness

Image: 1606283 As her 1st official self-release under her own label, Creator DIY, Low
Leaf has produced a distinguishable record that not only establishes
her prowess as a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, but
also demonstrates her ability to execute her vision as a completely
self-sustained artist in a lane all of her own creation.
Inspired by Psalm 57:8 which reads, “Wake up, my heart! Wake up,
O lyre & harp! I will wake the dawn with my song”, Palm Psalms is
a collection of compositions written to plant seeds of light and truth
within the soul of the world. Rooted in an experimental approach to
singer-songwriting, the record is organically held together with all live
instrumentation and free form orchestration. Low Leaf’s strongest
and most resolved work yet, her songwriting on the harp, keys, and
guitar are supported by live string arrangements, eclectic rhythms,
analog synths, and soaring wind instruments that guide the listener
though her
universal lyrics, and uplift one to a state of hopefulness and divine
connection.
Low Leaf shares her most refined album to date, which explores
uncharted territory with the electric harp in contemporary music,
blended with her signature style of unrestricted experimentation
and natural ear for songwriting. Palm Psalms is truly a milestone of
a record in Low Leaf’s ever-evolving repertoire- one that distinctly
shines as a unique and authentic light throughout the musical
landscape of today, and of all time.

Social Lovers – So Right (ft. Amalia) / Call Me Up
Friday, June 20th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Social Lovers – So Right (ft. Amalia) / Call Me Up

Image: 1589658 For their 7th release, Cherries brings a different sound to your speakers, created by the return of “the first lady of modern funk” AMALIA, in collaboration with a new group, out of the West Coast underground, Social Lovers.

With this release, the Social Lovers sound takes you downstairs to the basement after-hours party, where people dance close into the wee hours of the night. The A-Side, ‘So Right (feat. AMALIA)’ leads off with an enchanting arpeggiation, while the synth and drums connect with AMALIA’s spacey and soulful vocals to create a lush, warm pillow of funk to your ear drums. AMALIA waxes deep on a lover who is the perfect one, but soon becomes the wrong one, a melodic reminder that we are all looking for something real.

‘Call Me Up’, the B-Side brings Cherries closer to its Chicago roots with an instrumental, soulful house inspired tune, full of percussion and natural ebbs and flows of synth chords and strong melody. Social Lovers’ lush and polished production is showcased here with a brief taste of the smooth street soul sounds that the collective five thrives on, to keep you dancing in the basement ‘til the break of dawn.

ABOUT SOCIAL LOVERS

With influences from the different cities of LA, San Francisco, and Seattle, the Social Lovers (DJ Matty P (producer), Megan Doherty (vocals), Chris Letson (drums), Ryan Doherty (producer) & Joe Nunez (guitar)) are taking over the West Coast with their unique, underground sound. After meeting in high school back in 2005 where they were heavily influenced by the sounds of bossa nova, disco, funk, and soft rock, they all picked up their gear and bags towards the land of women, weed and weather, and created their signature sound, ‘street funk with a splash of class’. They have previously released a limited edition cassette of all original tracks on Cherries Records.

Nat Birchall – Live in Larissa
Thursday, May 22nd, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Nat Birchall – Live in Larissa

Image: 1589103 Nat Birchall is one of the UK’s most special musicians, a spiritual, soulful saxophonist who has drunk deeply from the endless well that is the music of John Coltrane. A modest man, Birchall is happy out of the limelight but nonetheless has found international acclaim for a series of fine albums on Matthew Halsall’s Gondwana label as well as more recently his own Sound Soul and Spirit imprint. This, his sixth album, is his first ever live recording and is released on vinyl and download only. A decision Birchall took on listening to the tapes and thinking the music really suited the warmth of vinyl. It features the core band from his last recording World Without Form: pianist Adam Fairhall, vibist Corey Mwamba, bassist Nick Blacka (GoGo Penguin) and drummer Paul Hession. They all bring something to the music as Birchall explains: “Adam has been in the band since the beginning and he’s there because he understands the music and plays with conviction. Corey is in the band because of his unique approach to playing, it doesn’t actually matter that he plays vibes. I asked him to play because of his playing, not his instrument. He is a free spirit but knows when to play and when not to play. Nick is a great bassist who has a great ability to improvise strong melodic lines within his accompaniment, which is actually pretty rare. Paul is a very great drummer who can play seamlessly throughout a piece if it goes from “time” to free tempo and back again, and makes it sound natural”. The recording came about when Birchall played two nights at the Duende Jazz Bar in Larissa, Greece in May 2013 – where, despite the tiny stage, the warm welcome and overwhelmingly positive reaction to the music inspired the band to reach deep within themselves for two nights of truly inspired music. Thankfully the tapes were rolling and despite the tiny stage and proximity of the mics (a nightmare for mixing) the music was really happening. As Birchall recalls: “There was such a positive atmosphere at the gigs, with people so obviously coming to hear the music with open arms ( and ears ) that we felt very blessed to be on stage. I think the record documents how the band sounds on a given night, with original songs, and one or two by other people, played in an extended way. With everyone able to stretch out and play as long as they like”.

Live In Larissa opens with John Coltrane by the bassist Bill Lee (father of Spike Lee) from Clifford Jordan’s classic Glass Bead Games album – a lost 70s classic on the Strata East label. Everyone solos and the band really stretch out with the performance taking up the whole of Side A of the LP. Divine Harmony is from Nat’s World Without Form recording and the title comes from the harmony that exists throughout the universe and the song has a hymn or prayer-like quality to it. Return To Ithaca is a densely textured musical journey also from World Without Form. Side C opens with Journey In Satchidananda – a classic song by Alice Coltrane. This, along with “John Coltrane” have been in Nat’s set list for the past ten years at least and although the song is pretty much just a bass-line it leaves plenty of room for improvisation and Birchall’s playing here is based on the original recorded melody (as played by Pharoah Sanders). World Without Form is inspired by how musicians aim to “make something out of (almost) nothing” when they improvise on simple melodies and forms. Both this and Divine Harmony are songs where the tenor plays the theme in a strong way, leading the ensemble, who accompany according to the melodic lead. On The Black Ark the bass, piano and horn/vibes parts are simple but rhythmically subtle and “lock” together to make the song work. This gives the music a particular sense of swing without having a walking bass line. Finally the album closes with Sacred Dimension, the title refers to the attempt to reach a higher state of mind when playing music. To try to transcend the notes and get to a place where the music happens by itself. In order to do this there are several things that need to be in place, the right musicians and the right audience and on this rare occasion in a small jazz bar in Larissa the magic happened and the band and audience reached that special place and praise be indeed that the tapes were rolling!!!

“In a scene dominated by jazz graduates who are fluent in the language but don’t have much to say, the music of saxophonist Birchall screams” (Phil Johnson)
“Truly transcendental” (Andrew Male)
“Beautifully exemplifies the new flowering of Northern jazz soulfulness…deeply felt and beautifully executed” (Jazzwise)
“a beautiful life-affirming album, a legal high even.” (Gary Booth)
“The music has an exuberant, dancelike quality… Birchall gets Coltrane’s spiritual message at a deeper level than many” (John Fordham)
“One of the best Musicians in the UK, no question about that.” (Gilles Peterson)

Unnatural Funk Band – Strange Happenings / Living In The Past
Friday, December 27th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Unnatural Funk Band – Strange Happenings / Living In The Past

Image: 1585549 A few years removed from their 1970 Damon Studios session in Kansas City, Bump & The Soul Stompers, led by Jerald “Bump” Scott, responded to their era’s off-kilter naming conventions to become Unnatural Funk Band. After failing to find a label home for “I Can Remember,” they made the descent into neighboring Independence, Missouri’s fabled subterranean Cavern Studios, erected inside the mouth of an actual limestone fissure. “Living in the Past” is a nostalgic drift through wistful falsetto and low-riding narration, while “Strange Happenings” is truly exceptional: an unnaturally good funk workout from a virtually undocumented Kansas City soul act. This previously unreleased pairing was unearthed, with assistance from “Bump” Scott himself, during the Numero Group’s KC-focused research for 2013’s Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label collection.

Tracklist:

2. “Living In The Past” Available from 06.12.2013

Image: 1578870 “Neon Hurts My Eyes” ist Natural Selfs viertes Album.

Smooth, spellbinding and sensual, the track meanders around a central percussive theme, complete with breathy vocals once more from Key. Naibu has a power to transcend and transform, and you will fall in love with music all over again once the tracks work their magic on you. Leading off the first of the 10”s, Just Like You (feat. Key) is a dreamlike, mystical affair, with the beat sliding in from afar, in turn supplementing Key’s vocal. The track builds, floating and soaring over your consciousness, and making a perfect start to the EP. It is backed with Nothing Special, a title which could hardly be further from the truth. The cut has a more low-slung feel than Just Like You, with a nagging bassline and tickling, trickling effects. Piano leads the line later, the two tracks acting as a fitting opening salvo to Fall’s musical mission. Available from 11.03.2013
