Motor City Drum Ensemble – DJ-Kicks
Saturday, August 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Motor City Drum Ensemble – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1564643 Motor City Drum Ensemble’s DJ Kicks mix is the latest installation into the outstanding discography of Danilo Plessow, and is not to be missed. The addition of a selection of MCDE exclusive tracks, and the majority of tracks being rare pieces of music from Danilo’s personal collection make this a mix of not only exceptional mixing capability.

Danilo was always incredibly young with things. He started producing at the age of eleven—“way too early” as he jokes—having his first release out just five years later: Inverse Cinematics’ “Slow Swing”, released on Pulver Records in 2002, and ended up finding its way into Ricardo Villalobos’ record bag as well as onto one of the first Fabric mix CDs. An album under the same name and a string of EPs followed. Dailo’s latest releases, the Motor City Drum Ensemble’s Raw Cuts series in 2010, had the house music world responding strongly to the charmingly fresh and dirty sounding tracks, all mixed down in spontaneous two-hour sessions. Danilo has also released on top labels ranging from 20:20 Vision to Rush Hour as well as his own MCDE and Four Roses imprints, produced for Ben Westbeech and Rainer Trüby and never ceased to amaze with his challenging remix work for artists like Caribou, Jazzanova, DJ Sprinkles and Zero 7.

His understanding of how the parts of a track can work has never been more apparent than on his DJ-Kicks mix. In 10 years, playing 80+ gigs a year, including such temples as Berghain, Fabric London, Rex and MOS, he’s absorbed dance history through hard and disciplined work behind the decks. Look at the opening selections of his DJ-Kicks mix to get a glimpse of his amazing ability to fuse totally disparate sound aesthetics into a coherent whole.

With the next months holding an extensive tour schedule for Danilo, dancers around the world will be able to experience his gift as a selector first hand. That is, before he gets back into the studio to start working on his first album as Motor City Drum Ensemble as well as a live act. All this will prove, just as his DJ-Kicks is doing now, that there is no such thing as stagnation in the ever-evolving cosmos of Danilo Plessow!

Marcus I & The Tucxone Army – Inner Calling (2LP+MP3)
Tuesday, December 13th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Marcus I & The Tucxone Army – Inner Calling (2LP+MP3)

Image: 1607812 Marcus I (Marc Ibarz) Santander:
Musician and songwriter born in Cantabria, active in the musical scene
since very early stages. In 2007 I moved to Madrid and there I started the
soulful reggae band Tasty Grooves a band where I performed as singer
and songwriter alongside some of the best reggae musicians in the city.
After the release of a single with Ken Boothe titled “A Change Must Come”
the international reggae community became aware of my career. Then,
with the Tasty Grooves I released my first LP titled “Soul Street” which
received great reviews from the international music journalists and did so
well with the audience. With “Soul Street” we performed in front of huge
crowdsatthebestreggaefestivalsallaroundsuchasRototomSunsplash,
La Concha Reggae Vibes, Minho Reggae, Reggaeboa, Madrid es Negro
and a long etcetera.
I now live in France and I from here I continue my solo career, my new
birth as an artist.WithTucxone Records hand in hand, they’ve trusted me
to ride their powerful resident band The Tucxone Army to work both live
and in the studio.
Tucxone Army:
Tucxone Army are a music collective that fight to preserve Jamaican
culture and music. Be it in the studio or on the stage, this band shows up
a very strict compromise with the roots of the Caribbean island sounds.
They frst gathered in 2014 to record for Little Roy and they been recording
together ever since with artists such as Luciano, Mikey General, Prince
Jazzbo, Eugene Paul, Natty G, Prince Jamo, BigYouth, and the list goes
on and on.They first came out as a studio band, but in 2015 they jumped
onto the stage to back up acts such as Prince Jamo.
In a time when sound system culture is leading the path of reggae into an
era where knowledge of the roots would seem it isn’t relevant and also
where musicians are in the shadows of the business, the Tucxone Army
are ready to fight back and put Roots Reggae back on its place.

Seige Monstracity – Seige Monstracity
Friday, December 2nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Seige Monstracity – Seige Monstracity

Image: 1607068 Seige Monstracity is an anomaly in the music industry. He rides the fence, providing the contemporary soundtracks for successful commercial artists such as YG, Tyrese, Keisha Cole, and Marsha Ambrosius, as well as producing grimey backdrops for underground artists like Bizarre, Bad Lucc, and Namebrand.

This is a collection of the latter. Seige’s debut LP contains 12 incredible doses of heavy beats, chopped up breaks, and obliterated samples. A Detroit transplant in Los Angeles, both cities are omnipresent at all times on the LP.

“Swahililand” is a west-coast interpretation of the classic “Stakes Is High”. “Careless” revives a classic David Axelrod moment. “Dirt Bag” sounds like a late night liquor store robbery. “Doves” takes a classic from one of our all time greats who we lost recently, and transforms it into a ride thru the hood on a beautiful day in Los Angeles.

This is not to be missed. Another classic collection of beats from Street Corner Music.

Blu x Union Analogtronics – Cheetah In The City
Friday, November 25th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Blu x Union Analogtronics – Cheetah In The City

Image: 1606568 Hot off collaborations with Nottz (Titans in the Flesh EP) and
Madlib (Bad Neighbor LP), SoCal ambassador Blu has teamed
up with the Paris-based production team Union Analogtronics (OJ
& Gold) to unleash a new full length album: Cheetah in the City.
Featuring Dam-Funk, Phat Kat, Frank N Dank, and more, the album
signifies a stylistic sea change for Blu, best known for his dusty,
soul sampling collaborations with Exile (Below the Heavens) and his
own introspective opuses (Her Favorite Colour, Good to be Home,
York!). Rippling with 808s and cinematic strings, Cheetah in the
City is an organic evolution from the synth-soaked, futuristic sound
of Analogtronics, UNION’s 2012 Fat Beats Records debut album
featuring Talib Kweli, MF DOOM, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, and more.
After mutual friends put them in touch at a Parisian post-show
after-party, Blu and Union began a musical exchange that spanned
continents. Blu returned to LA with UNION’s best beats, and after
months of exchanging lyrical ideas, the trio regrouped for marathon
recording sessions in UNION’s Paris-based studio. Cloistered for
weeks with nothing but drum machines, instruments, keyboards,
records, and France’s best bud, Blu became obsessed with infusing
his kicked back Southern California sensibilities into UNION’s
penchant for pushing the possibilities of technicality into multilayered, densely packed productions. A cohesive story emerged in
the songwriting: a young man, raised amongst deadbeats, killers,
and hard drugs, metamorphoses into the Cheetah, a money-making
predator whose quick talk and cold hustle make him the king of a city
that will eventually consume him, heart and soul.
We’ve never heard Blu like this.

El Michels Affair – Sounding Out The City
Friday, June 17th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on El Michels Affair – Sounding Out The City

Image: 1604721 Over 10 years ago, Leon Michels released his first full length record, Sounding Out The City. It was Michels’ first full length record under
the moniker El Michels Affair. At the time, the budding retro soul scene consisted of mostly organ quartets a la The Meters and of course,
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings were in the early days of their ascent to world domination.
Leon Michels, who was 18 when recording Sounding Out The City began, had just released Thunder Chicken, the first record by his high
school band The Mighty Imperials. At the time of SOTC, Michels was just discovering early rocksteady, afrobeat, and 60’s garage rock,
which inevitably crept its way into the songwriting. He purchased a Tascam 388, an 80’s 1/4″ reel to reel 8 track intended for home
recordings, and began recording music in a 10×10 box with no windows that also doubled as his childhood bedroom. Along with fellow
Mighty Imperials Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, and Sean Solomon, and Michael Leonhart, Thomas Brenneck, and some of the
musicians from The Dap Kings, Michels recorded the LP over a two year period.
Upon it’s release, it received some rave reviews and the small deep funk community ate it up, but due to the lack luster promotion and
distribution the rest of the world was slow to catch on to the instrumental gems featured on SOTC, which Michels appropriately labeled
as “cinematic soul”. However, in 2005 it found it’s way into the hands of the people who were organizing a series of concerts for Scion
that paired bands with MC’s. El Michels Affair was contacted about playing one show with Raekwon The Chef of Wu Tang Clan fame. The
show was such a success it led to a tour, and then to another set of concerts that featured multiple members of the Wu-Tang Clan. This
eventually led to the release of El Michels Affair’s second record, “Enter the 37th Chamber” which introduced them to a much larger
audience and has been their most successful release to date.
Michels has since gone on to produce and co-produce numerous records for powerhouse soul artists like Lee Fields. He shares
songwriting credits with Adele, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah, Aloe Blacc, and has played on records by Ray LaMontagne, Lana Del Rey, The
Black Keys and Dr. John.

Allen Toussaint – American Tunes
Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Allen Toussaint – American Tunes

Image: 1604411 Nonesuch releases American Tunes, a new studio album by legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint, on June 10, 2016. Toussaint had just completed the album when he passed away in November of last year during a European tour. Recording took place at two sets of sessions with producer Joe Henry: solo piano at Toussaint’s New Orleans home studio in 2013, and with the rhythm section of Jay Bellerose and David Piltch – joined by guests Bill Frisell, Charles Lloyd, Greg Leisz, Rhiannon Giddens, and Van Dyke Parks – in Los Angeles in October 2015. The album comprises solo performances of Professor Longhair tunes and band arrangements of songs by Toussaint, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Paul Simon, and others.

Allen Toussaint’s work as composer, producer, arranger, and performer, especially in the 1960s and ’70s, helped shape the sound of R&B, soul, and funk as we know it today. He collaborated memorably with artists ranging from Lee Dorsey and Ernie K. Doe to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle, from the Meters and Dr. John to the Band and Paul McCartney. The New York Times recently said, ”In Mr. Toussaint’s long career as songwriter, arranger and producer he has honed a piano style that’s supportive and allusive, a little trill or tremolo sums up all the splashy joys of New Orleans patriarchs like Professor Longhair and James Booker, and a syncopated chord under right-hand octaves summons gospel. Mr. Toussaint has the two-fisted, rippling vocabulary of the city’s piano legacy, but he uses it in dapper ways.”

Toussaint’s children, Alison Toussaint-LeBeaux and Clarence Reginald Toussaint, who have long served as their father’s managers, said of the American Tunes album, ”Our father approached this project with great care and understanding of the songs selected and paid true homage to Professor Longhair, his musical hero. He wanted to bring as much of the Toussaint touch as he could to these wonderful classics.”

Nonesuch previously released The Bright Mississippi in 2009. Also produced by Henry, the record includes songs by jazz greats such as Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Django Reinhardt, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Billy Strayhorn. The album received tremendous critical praise, with the Boston Globe saying it ”couldn’t sound more like New Orleans. (Toussaint) revisits jazz classics … and takes them for a stroll through Preservation Hall, imbuing his own funky brand of pop-song charisma. The results are coolly sophisticated, an unfussy, mostly instrumental set of slink-and-slide joints shot through with a harmonic imagination that turns even a traditional hymn into an after-hours swing … Toussaint’s musical soul guides all, making the classics sound like his own.”

That project indirectly grew from Toussaint’s contributions to Our New Orleans, the benefit album that Nonesuch released in fall 2005 to aid hurricane victims in the wake of the Katrina disaster. That collection opens with a version of ”Yes We Can Can,” the Toussaint song the Pointer Sisters made famous, newly recorded with producer Joe Henry, and it included a solo piano piece, ”Tipitina and Me,” co-written by Toussaint in tribute to Professor Longhair.

Joe Henry had first worked with Toussaint when he invited the pianist to join the sessions for I Believe to My Soul, a studio convocation of mature R&B stars. Henry subsequently acted as producer on Toussaint’s post-Katrina collaboration with Elvis Costello, The River in Reverse. He describes the most recent sessions: ”I have been working with Allen Toussaint – under his spell and subject to his influence – for a full decade now. He was a quiet radical, musically-speaking, and a prince of great humility.”

In the meantime they have released sold-out singles, an EP, and have toured Europe no less than five times! They visited Germany, France, Italy and the Czech Republic, and were met with excitement all over Europe’s Mod and Soul scene.

April of 2016 sees the release of their second studio album, titled “This City”, which is dedicated to their home town – Tel Aviv. In the album MONC infuse Northern Soul, Post-Punk and Rock’N’Roll influences into heady visions of the city’s buildings, streets, bedrooms, clubs and bars, while remaining dedicated to their brass section extravaganza and the three-minute pop-nugget charm.

The band have a fan in Craig Charles, who liked the album so much he’s hand-selecting 3 of his favourite tracks from the album on his BBC Funk & Soul Show and will invite listeners to phone in and vote for the “single”, which will then be released digitally by the band. He has also invited the band over from Tel Aviv for a live session in the station’s Manchester studios.

Various – Motor City Drum Ensemble – Selectors 001
Friday, February 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Motor City Drum Ensemble – Selectors 001

Image: 1601770 MCDE shares some of his most prized gems on this compilation that kicks of the limited Dekmantel ‘Selectors’ series.

1. DJ Slym Fas – Luv Music
2. House Of Jazz – Hold Your Head Up
3. 20 Below – A Lil Tribute To The Moody Black Keys
4. Risque III – Essence Of A Dream
5. Licky – African Rock
6. Raphael Green – Don’t Mess With The Devil
7. Ahzz – New York’s Movin (Instrumental)
8. Bill Deal – Freak n Freeze

What, exactly, is a selector? Dekmantel has long been determined to find out, even before the Amsterdam-based crew added an official Selectors stage to its annual summer festival in 2014. While the stage has since played host to an elite class of DJs that includes the likes of Floating Points, Mike Servito, Traxx, DJ Harvey, Ben UFO, and Donato Dozzy, to name just a few, Dekmantel came to realize that the Selectors concept needed a larger platform of its own.

As such, 2016 will see the launch of both a limited-capacity festival and compilation series, both bearing the Selectors name. The compilations will come first, with Motor City Drum Ensemble, Young Marco, and Joy Orbison at the helm of the initial three chapters. These are not mix CDs, every Selectors compilation will include a collection of hand-picked, unmixed tracks personally curated by the artist.

Admittedly, drawing a line between “selectors” and mere DJs is an all-but-impossible task—it’s essentially a “you know it when you see it” proposition—but it’s hard to argue that Motor City Drum Ensemble (a.k.a. Danilo Plessow) doesn’t tick all of the required boxes. He’s been digging for records since his teenage years, and his DJing has become the stuff of legend, thanks in no small part to his head-turning sets at the last few Dekmantel festivals.

In truth, Plessow’s relationship with Dekmantel dates back to the earliest days of the Motor City Drum Ensemble project, making him a natural candidate to head up the inaugural Selectors compilation. As expected, he’s thrown himself into the task, selecting a want list from his collection of 15,000 records was no easy task, but getting permission for the final tracklist was even tougher.

One song in particular, Raphael Green’s “Don’t Mess with the Devil,” required him to personally call up a church in St. Louis, Missouri. “The guy, he’s a Bishop,” he says. “When the Ferguson protests were happening, for example, he was on CNN explaining his thoughts on the whole thing, so he’s a known public figure, but nobody really knew that he had this amazing record that was recorded in ’79 or ’80. His voice is just unbelievable. It’s the kind of record that when I heard it the first time, I couldn’t believe that there had only been like 100 copies pressed, and that this wasn’t actually big.”

Motor City Drum Ensemble’s record bag is full of these kinds of gems, but he has no qualms about sharing a few of his secret weapons with a wider audience. “I wanted to get some of the stuff that is really, really hard to get, and make it available for younger people,” he explains. “I used to be in the same situation. Back when I was 18, I would listen to a Rainer Truby mix and he would only play these $400 Brazilian records. I was like, ‘Fuck, how am I ever going to be able to afford these?’ I was glad when there was a reissue, and it’s a bit the same with the compilation now.”
“Basically,” he explains, “the approach for the compilation was, ‘If I walked into a record store, what kind of compilation would I buy?’ That’s what I did.” Available from 13.05.2016

Joon Moon – Call Me EP
Friday, February 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Joon Moon – Call Me EP

Image: 1601961 “ Call Me “ EP is the 2nd Joon Moon release. Following “Chess” EP released end of 2015 , with strong supports on national radios like BBC2, BCC3, KCRW,France Inter, Couleur 3 and many more around the world.

Joon Moon’s story started in 2014 in Montmartre, Paris, in the studio of the excessively discreet Julien Decoret – with Phoebe Killdeer giving breath to his first lyric sheets. The indefatigable Moon’s aim was to continue creating, after touring with Nouvelle Vague, Florent Marchet etc, and start his own project.

With all the creative decisions already made for keyboards, vocals and drums, Julien joined up with his pals Raphael Chassin and Sébastien Trouvé for both the studio recording and stage show that they had already collectively imagined.

In early 2015, thanks to chance encounters and other musically-minded friends like Marc Collin and Hugh Coltman, Julien Decoret met another artist with an impressive live show (and someone just as reserved as he is) – Krystle Warren, born in Kansas City and recently arrived in France.

The four had mutual friends, and after a few try-outs in the studio and a misunderstanding about a certain Alice / Juliette Lewis (a story that makes them all laugh even today) a real synergy came to pass, with Joon Moon the result – both in the studio and on stage.

Their new e.p. “Call Me”, showcases a mix of precise and impressive pop and soul arrangements, hinting that the album due end of 2016 will be an exciting discovery, joyfully crashing through numerous musical barriers.A word of warning though – the siren-like voice of Krystle Warren may have you addicted to Joon Moon before you know it.

“Warren’s voice is an extraordinary instrument, murmuring with tenderness at times, growling with intensity at others. It vividly recalls Nina Simone in its depth and smokiness, as well as John Martyn and (Jeff) Buckley in terms of virtuosic variety.” – The Guardian

Back To Me, is an exploration of human sensuality told through songs of romance, heartache and personal reflection. Adding that perfectly sealed kiss of mystique, pain and hope, Halligan’s uniquely tortured voice brings back the art of classic vocal allure mixed with modern-day, moody production. Maybe Sonar Kollektiv got a lucky punch, or maybe it’s just a logical consequence that Munich based Niko Schabel and his Radio Citizen project now release their new album on the label that represents exactly the same sound Schabel has been preaching for years. The fist two LPs (“Berlin Serengeti” and “Hope And Despair”) came out on the San Francisco imprint Ubiquity Recordings after Quantic heard Radio Citizen’s music and pinned a promo CD on Ubiquity’s A&R department.

Five years after the excursion to San Francisco Schabel now returns with his combo to the haven of his hometown. “The Night & The City” is an album tailor-made for Sonar Kollektiv: A melange of genres which deploys live instruments on an equal footing with samples and herewith becomes a highly explosive mixture of latin percussion, funk, poppy dub, moody, folky soul, Afrobeat, ethno-jazz, Bossa Nova, Hiphop und blaxploitation soundtracks. Schabel is a so-called musician’s musician who can play anything from woodwinds to keyboards and percussions, as well as of course the MPC sampler by Akai like hardly anyone else. On top of that he apprehends expertly how to work with all kind of different musicians and how to form out of many influences, individual pieces and styles of genres a coherent entity bigger than its separate parts.

To start off this thirteen stations encompassing tour of “The Night & The City” we get the slightly sombre “Shores” with jazz singer extraordinaire (Denmark born with Ghanaian roots) Natalie Greffel and dummer Matthias Gmelin. Niko Schabel himself controls the MPC, plays piano and supplies the percussion. It gets even more sinister thereupon with the instrumental “Clouds” with the backing by Antonis Anissegos at the piano. The whole album drifts somewhere between melancholia and wistfulness. On “Radio Days” Natalie Greffel bemoans devoutly: “search around for higher ground, before I drown in the waves that been pulling me down”. This sounds as if Portishead and Tricky spent a day together at the stormy Atlantic coast. Since “Rise” is somehow about the sea as well, but also about finally stopping
to mope and “freedom will come your way”.

The album actually embraces the typical Bristolian sound without evoking triphop or bigbeat at any point. Niko Schabel and his comusicians are much too much devoted to Jazz to go along that path and with tracks like “Trip”, “Sleep” or “Schatten” they provide the perfect soundtrack to an imaginary big city thriller. The significant difference from other musically flawless and stylistically confident combos that do their own thing called Jazz is Radio Citizen’s unparalleled use of samples. On “Phone” it is a vinyl crackle and numerous strange sounds Schabel constructs a round-thetwist wall of sound of, on top of which Greffel’s lyrics slide cherubically. The singer with her beautifully heartwarming voice is virtually ubiquitous on “The Night & The City”. Only on “Near And Far” she briefly leaves the microphone to Abiodun Oyewole while supporting the mesmerizing beat with a triangle.

This is definitely not your common feelgood album which you can let warble off-handedly in the background. Only if you want to create voluntary an atmosphere that is claustrophobic as well as menacing and compelling in the same way. Music for after midnight. Music for city neurotics with lots of groove.

Togo Allstars – Way Out Of Sadness / Ekue
Friday, July 10th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Togo Allstars – Way Out Of Sadness / Ekue

Image: 1598187 Two steaming Afro Funk rollers from Togo .. TIP!
Hailing from the capital city, the Togo All Stars display a vigorous rhythm section and three sturdy voices deeply rooted within the afropop traditions stemming from the independence era, be it high-life, afrobeat, funk, reggae or even gospel music.

A passionate man with a cause, Serge Amiano has been living in Lomé for a few years now. Thanks to his musical vision, he’s the mastermind behind Togo All Stars’ meeting of two generations. He confronts younger musicians playing in the shadows with older voices long thought to be tarnished under elusive limelight.
Tireless talent scout and energy catalyst, Amiano paved the way for the Togo All Stars to happen, in the same manner he did it for Fanga, a celebrated French afrobeat collective in the last decade. Korbo, Fanga’s singer is featured on the Togo All Stars’ first album to be released this spring, under Kindred spirits record label.

Nested behind its sea front lined with tentative palm trees, Lomé is an unsung Atlantic Africa city. The city mixes the energy of a restless youth with displays of genuine emotions that were once the soundtrack of the country’s independence, from April 27th 1960 to this day.

Set in a country where cultural preservation is almost pointless, Serge Amiano had the idea to bring together rough voices from the past with the supreme rhythms of young lions dedicated to any kind of repertoire they lay their hands on. A true electric shock between generations, the Togo All Stars combine dignified and vintage singers with youthful musicians, exuberant rhythm section, liquid guitars and devastating horns.

Genuine Togolese afro funk pioneer, charming Napo de mi Amor brings his solid vocal experience to the front of the orchestra. Aguey Cudjoe is Amiano’s true discovery. He stumbled upon this veteran singer doing high-life numbers in one of Lomé’s rare clubs. He became effortlessly one of the All Stars main voices, also adding sweet percussive touches in the distance.
Experienced and mature, Dama Damawuzan learnt his trade within As du Bénin, the great and main Togolese orchestra from the 1970’s. He confronts his vocal prowesses to his own percussions but also to young drummer Gbetoglo Efoevi’s fierce groove. On this album, each of the All Stars’ eight musicians joins in for vocal harmonies. Legendary Otodi Studio was reopened for the sole recording of this first Togo All Stars album, giving exquisite analog warmth to the songs.

Unappreciated for the time being, these gathered stars from Togo set bridges between the past, the present and the future of an always moving afro music. Fresh and raw energy combined with vintage singers, the Togo All Stars’s music embodies a true international musical elegance, looming large over the Atlantic and giving Togo its first big band since the 1970’s. Alloy Orchestra – Man With The Movie Camera: Live At Third Man Rec.
Friday, October 10th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Alloy Orchestra – Man With The Movie Camera: Live At Third Man Rec.

Image: 1593134 The Alloy Orchestra double Live LP was recorded Direct-To-Acetate October, 12th in the Third Man Blue Room as the soundtrack to The Man With The Movie Camera Screening, cohosted by the Belcourt Theatre as part of the 2013 iNDie Festival.

It was only a lucky few iNDie Festival attendees who witnessed Alloy Orchestra’s performance of their soundtrack to the 1929 silent film ”The Man with the Movie Camera” in our Blue Room last Fall, so we are pleased to bring the recording to you in the form of a double LP. Alloy Orchestra is a 3-man musical ensemble – Roger C. Miller, Ken Winokur, & Terry Donahue – who use ”racks of junk,” synthesizers, and all sorts of other unusual instruments, found objects, and unlikely noisemakers to aurally accompany silent films. Roger Ebert has called them ”the best in the world at accompanying silent films,” and we can’t disagree. ”The Man with the Movie Camera,” directed by Dziga Vertov and edited by his wife Elizaveta Svilova, is a documentary with no specific cast or narrative. In the film, a man carries out his day in the city as a member of the proud proletariat, capturing invention and the relationship between man and machine in Lenin’s Soviet Union.

Artifacts – APB (All Points Bulletin)
Thursday, September 18th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Artifacts – APB (All Points Bulletin)

Image: 1592073 From the fading SMPTE sound and the melancholic opening sax riff to “Wrong Side Of Da Tracks,” the Artifacts endeared fans with their backand-forth wordplay and honest rhyming, paying homage to an oft-forgotten aspect of Hip Hop culture: graffiti art. The New Jersey duo went on a mission of demolition as Tame One and El Da Sensei’s lyrical onslaught was perfectly paired with no holds barred production from some of the best boardsmiths of the day. Their aptly titled debut Between a Rock and a Hard Place (1994) symbolized both the blue-collar work ethic Tame and El put forth in their craft and a clever reference to “Brick City,” better known as Newark, NJ. This momentum carried over to their second (and final) album That’s Them (1997), which showed an ability to grow lyrically while maintaining a strong eye and ear on quality control.
Fast-forward to 2014. On this outing, Tame and El team up, reuniting for a rare appearance with Redefinition Records for their latest single “All
Points Bulletin (APB).” Seattle’s Def Dee deftly handles the production duties on Side-A and Germany’s Klaus Layer runs the remix on the flip
side, but please understand: this is a “Nu Jeruz” affair. With that said, Redef provides a home for the two veteran MCs to showcase their talents sans the restrictions and constraints of a corporate machine exerting its will to mold the artists into something artificial versus “artifact”ual. The music takes on an organic feel and leaves the listener feeling like Tame and El haven’t missed a beat. Rounding out the north NJ connection is K-Def, who lends his mastering prowess to the project. This synergy is felt through geographical bonds and an overall desire to make the best art possible, with more music coming to a speaker near you. The Artifacts continue to “show and prove” with their indelible stamp left on Hip Hop, irrespective of time. Never rule out industry vets with an undeniable dedication to all aspects of the culture…can’t forget New
Jersey.
