Ralph MacDonald / Foxy – Jam On The Groove / Get Off Your..(D.Krivit Edits)
Saturday, January 14th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ralph MacDonald / Foxy – Jam On The Groove / Get Off Your..(D.Krivit Edits)

Image: 1608288 NYC Disco legend Danny Krivit returns to the editing block on behalf of seminal Miami Disco powerhouse TK Disco. With 45 years in the DJ game under his belt and having played endless gigs all over the world during that time it’s safe to say Mr.K knows exactly what he’s doing when it comes to the re-edit thing! With unprecedented access to TK’s vaults Danny has been turning in some stellar reworkings as of late and the cuts included on this latest instalment keep the quality sky high!

On the A-side Mr.K kicks off with a heavyweight edit of a stone cold b-boy / club classic! The legendary, late Ralph McDonald’s (RIP) ‘Jam on the groove’ has long been a staple source of nourishment for hungry samplers and it’s stripped back, calypso influenced percussion breakdowns have found themselves being cut up by numerous DJ’s at clubs and block parties since it’s original release in 1976. Here, Mr.K brings that killer breakdown right up front, rearranging the track in a way that gives us all the meat! This is a truly pared back edit, those with keen ears will recognise a wealth of samples that have been jacked from mr McDonald’s drum-kit. This is one cut you can either hustle to or head-spin to! Hot, hot, hot….

The B-side see’s Miami’s FOXY and their ‘Get off your aaah & dance’ get the Mr.K editing block treatment. Kicking off with some tight drums with a heavy Latin influence this cut rolls along so smooth, giving way to a super funky pairing of guitars and flutes. FOXY are another group whose catalogue has been plundered by sample savvy producers over the years. This particular track is Disco heaven, beautifully produced and arranged, it flows along and will certainly cause some dance-floor tremors! A track for dancers, 100%, gracefully tweaked by Mr.K in just the right way! Essential business!

Of course, Danny Krivit’s edits are always done in the proper manner, from the point of view of someone who has lived, breathed and played this music for the best part of 50 years. 100% legit re-edits, from Danny’s personal collection, remastered and released in conjunction with Henry Stone Music / TK Disco – Miami FL.

Albert Ayler – Spiritual Unity
Friday, July 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Albert Ayler – Spiritual Unity

Image: 1598362 No introduction needed as ESP Disk present a reissue of the undisputed classic Spiritual Unity from Albert Ayler.

Track Listing:
1. (A1) “Ghosts: First Variation”   5:12
2. (A2) “The Wizard”  7:21
3. (B1) “Spirits” 6:47
4. (B2)”Ghosts: Second Variation”  10:00
LP total Time:     29:20

LP NOTE:  LP deliberately does not include the bonus track on the CD, so as to replicate the original, intended track order

Personnel: Albert Ayler, tenor saxophone, Gary Peacock, bass, Sunny Murray, percussion.

Overview: Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk’ famous (or, in
some people’s eyes/ears, infamous). Mr. Ayler had already recorded in Europe and, in February ’64, in New York, but
this was the first album where neither he nor his collaborators held back. It was also ESP’s first jazz recording.

Spiritual Unity presented a new improvisation paradigm: looser structure, less regard for standard pitch, and no
obligation to present a regular beat. Ayler’s sound was unprecedented, much rawer than any other jazz of the time.
Sometimes it was expressed in squalls of untempered sound, sometimes in outbursts of poignant spontaneous melody.
Meanwhile, under and around the leader’s unfettered self-expressions, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny
Murray reinvented the roles of their instruments.

The 50th  Anniversary Expanded Edition includes as a bonus the track briefly substituted for “Spirits” on an early vinyl
edition. It is the same tune known as “Vibrations” on the album of that title on Arista/Freedom (AKA Ghosts when issued
on Debut) and as “[tune Q]” on the Revenant box set Holy Ghost. It will be the first time both “Spirits” and “Vibrations”
have been on an ESP edition of Spiritual Unity.

Press Quotes: “If you haven’t heard this record, you’ve missed out on one of the most profound artistic statements of
the 20th century.” – All About Jazz

“The first ‘variation’ of ‘Ghosts’ lifts that bare, unadorned theme into realms that no previous jazz musician had ever
dared, and superlatives simply run out in trying to find a terminology for its bleak power and – never let it be forgotten –
control. … Spiritual Unity is one of the essential recordings of the new jazz and should be in every serious collection.” –
Penguin Guide to Jazz

“Ayler’s negation of fixed pitches finds a counterpart in Peacock’s and Murray’s negation of the beat. In no group at this
time is so little heard of a steady beat, as in the trio and quartet recordings of the Ayler group. The absolute rhythmic
freedom frequently leads to action on three independent rhythmic planes: Ayler improvises in long drawn-out sound
spans, Peacock hints at chains of impulses, irregular and yet swinging in a remote sense, Murray plays on cymbals with a
very live resonance, creating colour rather than accentuation.” – Ekkehard Jost’s seminal 1974 book Free Jazz

“Spiritual Unity was the album that pushed Albert Ayler to the forefront of jazz’s avant-garde…. It was really the first
available document of Ayler’s music that matched him with a group of truly sympathetic musicians, and the results are a
magnificently pure distillation of his aesthetic. … Yet as liberated and ferociously primitive as Ayler sounds, the group
isn’t an unhinged mess — all the members listen to the subtler nuances in one another’s playing, pushing and responding
where appropriate. Their collective improvisation is remarkably unified — and as for the other half of the album’s title,
Ayler conjures otherworldly visions of the spiritual realm with a gospel-derived fervor.”- Steve Huey, All Music Guide  Available from 25.09.2015

” From spine tingling jolts of dubstep to electrified synths and pads to undertones of pop and rock – Wall Of Sound is exactly as the title suggests. YourEDM
“Wall Of Sound is perhaps the most anticipated drum and bass release since Sub Focus dropped his. The album covers the entire drum & bass spectrum. From the bouncy & uplifting to dark &dub. Tracks resembling the classic days of DnB to the modern day techy numbers. There is a variety of BPM’s too. In fact, that is a good word to use as a description of this drum & bass showcase: Divine.” Funkatech
“Let’s get cracking now shall we? It’s time for some good old drum and bass and we must say that Drumsound & Bassline Smith are doing one hell of a job at ‘the crackin’ with their new album ‘Wall of Sound’. The project has been a two and a half year expedition into the deep underbelly of drum and bass and the result is absolutely fantastic. “The Banging Beats

As a result of legendary albums like Everybody Loves The Sunshine (1976) Stoned Soul Picnic (1968) and Mystic Voyage (1975), Roy Ayers has established himself as a living legend and an idol of jazz cats, crate diggers and true music lovers the world over. Having played with some of the finest musicians in the world, including Herbie Hancock, Guru, Fela Kuti, Mary J. Blige, Ron Carter, Erykah Badu, and The Roots, Roy Ayers has found acceptance from both the Jazz and Hip-Hop communities. In 2003, Ayers gave Rapster/BBE unprecedented access to hundreds of unreleased recordings. This resulting album is the 2nd in the Lost and Found series and what is likely to be a series of albums, giving life to what can only be termed “the holy grail” of any true music lover’s search.

Isaac Hayes – Do Your Thing (RSD)

Image: 1606747 “The full 33-minute, unreleased, psychedelic funk jam session by Memphis rhythm kingpins the
Bar-Kays, mixed directly from the original tapes. Contains bonus rhythm section instrumental and
booklet detailing the history of this never-before-heard version of one of Isaac Hayes’ most
famous songs by Hayes historian Bill Dahl.
Hayes was already a cutting-edge funk master at Stax Records when he accepted the
unprecedented assignment of creating a soundtrack for the 1971 action flick Shaft. At a time
when R&B songs routinely timed out at three minutes and under, Hayes’ albums for Stax’s
Enterprise imprint had been breaking new ground since 1969. His masterpiece Hot Buttered Soul
consisted of only four tracks, two songs on The Isaac Hayes Movement clocked in at a hair under
12 minutes, and one selection on his …To Be Continued stretched to 15:33.
But his epic “Do Your Thing,” one of the cornerstones of the two-LP Shaft soundtrack, outdid them
all. Occupying nearly the entire last side of the set, it concluded after 19-and-a-half grooving
minutes with the overdubbed sound of a needle scratching violently across a piece of vinyl. No
one knew that jarring ending masked the existence of another 13 minutes of “Do Your Thing.”
Consigned to the vaults, those improvisatory extensions—somewhere in between free-jazz and
psychedelic rock—were seemingly destined never to be heard. Until now.”

No Regular Play – Can’t You See
Friday, August 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on No Regular Play – Can’t You See

Image: 1604656 No Regular Play has come along way in their pursuit of sonic excellence.
Their freshly completed second album, “Can’t You See”, is the duo’s finest
showing to date. Forged amidst the fires of coping with the loss of a dear
loved one, “Can’t You See” is a testament to the power of creativity
triumphing over and transmuting adversity.
The multi-instrumental and impressively talented band consists of born and
bred Minnesotans Gregory Paulus & Nicholas DeBruyn who relocated to
Brooklyn, NY, 10 years ago. They are the same Crew Love stalwarts that you
should know and love. This time around, the gentleman have pushed their art
and craft further than ever before, fine-tuning each individual sound on the
album to an unprecedented level of detail with the help of talented producer,
Alex “Hammer” Hamadey. The end result is a work that is robust, substantively deep and ready to soundtrack your night, be it a steamy dance floor or
a romantic summer tryst.
For the unfamiliar, No Regular Play’s creative essence is that of artists
inspired by the dirty instincts of the late night dance floor but married to the
lush harmony of the concert hall. This essence is on clear display in “Can’t
You See”, and definitively thriving.
The duo began composing this album shortly after the passing of Gregory
Paulus’ father, Stephen Paulus, one of the most prolific American composers
of the last century. Consequently, the core of the album is driven by their
bold spirit to positively respond to a very intense period in their lives. The
songwriting takes a deeper tone addressing the topics of life, death, hope,
cherished memories and perseverance. “Can’t You See” is about remembrance and embracing the beautiful truth that the music will always live on.
The second track of the album, “Lake Gilmore”, carries an eerie nostalgia
that serenely enhances this theme of remembrance. The melody is an outline
of a chord Stephen Paulus used to play frequently, a stylistic hallmark. No
Regular Play recorded this melody on Stephen’s Steinway grand piano from
1925, a family heirloom and the same piano he wrote music on every day of
his life. Throughout the album, there are many recordings made on
Stephen’s piano, so listen closely on “Be Together” & “Never Be the Same”.
These were some of the last notes played on the beloved instrument.
No Regular Play will be touring “Can’t You See” the world over, expanding
the project with a full live band including piano, drums, and saxophone. They
have already gotten their feet wet with this wonderful live configuration, so
catch them as they move forward, one step at a time towards the
full-fledged musical masters they are destined to become.

It’s 1981. Everything seems possible in the realms of music. The barriers between genres are
being willfully torn down, punk is discovering the synthesizer, the drum machine is replacing
the drummer and no idea is too absurd to pursue. The winds of change are blowing from New
York to London, Berlin and Tokyo and there’s a palpable, uninhibited spirit of optimism in the
air turning music industry on it’s head. People are experimenting with novel equipment,
bands are springing up like mushrooms, line-ups disband and regroup. A whole generation is
being inspired by a do-it-yourself mentality, creating an unprecedented knowledge of how to
produce music. Every artist seems to be full of ambition, conquering new frontiers whilst often
participating in several projects simultaneously. When today, we look back at this time it
appears as an unintelligible mess with no economic viability, but 30 years ago it was simply
the sheer desire for artistic freedom, self-fulfillment and the urge to have control over one’s
own creative work that was the driving force.
Let’s take the guitar player, Wolfgang Spelmanns. After leaving DAF (Deutsch Amerikanische
Freundschaft) in December 1980, his head was full of ideas and an exuberant compulsion to
express himself in as many ways as possible. A singular focus is impossible. One of these
endeavors is a visit to Werner Lambertz’s studio in Düsseldorf. While the first few takes, of what
later would become “Bewegliche Ziele”, are being recorded, the main object is putting
Lambertz’s self-designed modular percussion computer to the test. But the shenanigans don’t
end here. Soon after, Jaki Liebezeit, the drummer of Can, is invited to jam freestyle over the
programmed beats. New technologies and innovative methods have drawn the attention of
Liebezeit, challenging him to play as monotonously as if he were a machine himself (or a
computer in this case). It takes him less than 90 minutes to ad-lib two stunning drum tracks for
Spelmanns’ still nameless project. Spelmanns however, is not in a hurry to finish the tracks.
Unlike the bustling drummer, his focus has a much broader horizon. Instead he wanders off
and forms Mau Mau, a new band with his old flat mate and former partner in DAF, the bass
player and member of Düsseldorf group Fehlfarben, Michael Kemner. Consequently, the
recordings are left to the side and almost forgotten about.

Almost. Two years later, living in West Berlin, Spelmanns remembers the tapes and brings
them, along with his girlfriend and singer Claudia Sennlaub (alias Tabu), to the Caet Studio
on Kreuzberg’s Mehringdamm. Vocals and the guitar are recorded and in-studio synthesizers
are enthusiastically thrown into the mix allowing the two songs to finally take on a concrete
form. “Bewegliche Ziele” and “Schön Sein In Uniform” are mixed and mastered by none other
than Charly Steinberg, the founder of Steinberg GmbH and developer of one of the first DAWs
(Digital Audio Workstations), Cubase.
Having had mainly negative experiences with major labels (i.e. Polydor), and seeing how his
friends at Ata Tak music publishing, are swamped with bureaucracy and paperwork,
Spelmanns decides to independently press the record on four different-colored discs at Pallas
pressing plant. Totaling only 1000 copies, the records are released on the ad-hoc label
Delphin in early 1983 and are delivered straight to the door step of his apartment on
Pücklerstraße. Leaving the musician, although gaining ground by leaps and bounds in the art
scene, reduced to single-handedly supplying Berlin’s record stores with his release. No wonder
that only a few of the colorful discs find an audience and the potential success of Plaza Hotel
is all but nipped in the bud.
Amazingly, the record continues to be rediscovered time and again, throughout the years’
time. By a diverse mix of DJs and record collectors from all sorts of different countries, origins
and scenes. They all take a personal interest in “Bewegliche Ziele”. From die-hard NDW fans to
New Wave analysts and never-tiring sound explorers like the infamous, Dutch record collector
Tako Reyenga. It is him who plays one of these rare copies, sometime in 2010, in Düsseldorf of
all places, in the Salon d’Amateurs, one of the world’s hippest underground clubs, in front of a
broad-minded audience. In short “Bewegliche Ziele” (played on 33rpm instead of 45rpm)
becomes a signature tune not only at the Salon, but on dance floors of every boutique club
operating outside of mainstream territory all around the world. About the same time
Jazzanova member and co-founder of NOTES ON A JOURNEY, Stefan Leisering stumbles
across the 12” in a crate in Canada. Back in Berlin he plays his discovery to his buddy and
Jazzanova co-partner Alex Barck. Falling for the song’s magic as Leisering does, Barck
rearranges, what was perviously considered complete, the third edition of “Computer
Incarnations For World Peace” just to fit this exceptional tune into the already fine selection.
Spelmanns himself, now living in Bremen, working as a video artist and leading the Generic
Art Ensemble, definitely didn’t expect this to ever happen. Three decades after its initial
release “Bewegliche Ziele” is finally finding its listeners and revealing its long hidden spell. It’s
the same with “Bewegliche Ziele” as with a lot of this time period’s music long forgotten or only
released in a very limited capacity: Today, with hindsight, it gains new meaning and an
extensive resonance. Over the last few years Plaza Hotel’s skewness, the graceful peculiarity,
the courageous experimentalism is being explored by new and younger groups and can be
heard in current music again. Meaning “Bewegliche Ziele” could have easily be released in
2016. NOTES ON A JOURNEY thought the same and decided, that not only freaky record
collectors should be able to, for extortionate prices, enjoy this timeless, fascinating piece of
music on vinyl. So we have brought Plaza Hotel back to life, in all its glory. Available from 15.07.2016

Piero Umiliani – Psichedelica (LP+CD)
Wednesday, October 7th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Piero Umiliani – Psichedelica (LP+CD)

Image: 1600186 Before talking about Psichedelica, one of the many and rare library albums signed by Piero Umiliani, we must step back in time, until June 1968, when Umiliani was working on the score of “Svezia Inferno e Paradiso” (Sweden Heaven and Hell), one of the many collaborations between director Luigi Scattini and the Maestro. In fact, a large part of the music recorded for that movie, one of Umiliani’s most popular works, would be later selected for this library release. Originally issued by the label Omicron, which pressed 200 copies, not even destined to be sold. Despite the title, a misleading “Psichedelica”, and a suitable colored cover, this LP walks – of course, one might say – along the lines of Scattini’s film soundtrack, among beat outbursts, orchestral tracks and some references to the rock sound of the time, as can be heard in the second of the two versions of “Hippies”.

Those who know will remeber that “Psichedelica” contains the first version of Umiliani’s most famous composition: “Mah-Nà Mah-Nà”, a track that will be a mixed blessing of his artistic life. Considered a filler and discarded from the soundtrack of “Svezia Inferno e Paradiso”, it was originally called “Viva la sauna svedese” (featuring Alessandro Alessandroni and his wife Julia on vocals, as well as in “Birra, Vermouth e Gin”), it was then retitled and re-released in the US a few months later, achieving unprecedented success and even ending up in the charts, later known as ‘The Muppet Show’s song’, it became almost immediately a world famous cult track, an authentic hallmark of Piero Umiliani’s popular genius.

This LP walks among beat outbursts, orchestral tracks and some references to the rock sound of the time. “Psichedelica” contains the first version of Umiliani’s most famous composition: “Mah-Nà Mah-Nà”, a track that will be a mixed blessing of his artistic life, here appearing as an outtake from the “Svezia Inferno e Paradiso” OST, under the title “Viva la sauna svedese”.

After releasing a string of driving, dancefloor-oriented singles on European labels Rush Hour and Hotflush, Brooklyn’s own Praveen Sharma aka Braille is keying up to release his debut LP, Mute Swan, on Friends of Friends this Spring. With an ear for sentimental melodies and an unprecedented step into the vocal arena, Braille’s first full-length is rife with narrative appeal and rich songwriting, collapsing dozens of genre signifiers into a cauldron of pathos.
Sharma’s own vocal experiments are aided by Jessie Boykins III on “I Assume” and Angelica Bess on “Ports” and “Better Than Nothing”, as well as additional production from Throwing Snow and Seafloor, a symphony of voices feeding into the cohesive vision he has established, one as much influenced by internal struggle as it is by his current environ in Brooklyn. The Seafloor-assisted “The Cat’s Gone Nuts” epitomizes the aforementioned spirit, drawing on classic soul as well as hip hop, R&B and UK garage. Cerebrally affecting, Braille’s compositions take the listener on a walk through the artist’s past and present, a collage of emotions ranging from melancholic joy to the deepest of sorrows. All in all, it’s a pleasure to bring Braille into the Friends of Friends family, a fit that looks just as good on paper as it is in reality!
Key Points:
Debut solo LP from Braille who also records music as 1/2 of wildly successful Sepalcure duo (with Machinedrum)
‘Everyone’s Crazy’ EP supported by Mixmag, Resident Advisor, Exclaim, FACT Mag, Fader, XLR8R, Hypetrak and more
Radio support from George Fitzgerald (BBC), Sohn (BBC), Rob Da Bank (BBC), Plastician (Rinse) and more
Forthcoming guest mixes for i-D Magazine and Solid Steel Radio

Press Quotes:
“A full-length whose vitality may well spill into the lifeblood of whatever’s two generations on.” – Derek Miller, Resident Advisor on Sepalcure
“Fresh, swinging and juicy is how Braille likes his tunes.” – Mixmag on “Small Downs” (Everyone’s Crazy EP)
“The Brooklyn resident returns with his latest slate of lush, bass-heavy beats.” – FACT Mag on Everyone’s Crazy EP
“That Sepalcure is so balanced and organized can be attributed to the experience and seeming calm of its principals, that it sounds so lively and inviting is the greater achievement.” – Pitchfork on Sepalcure Available from 01.05.2015

Chancha Via Circuito – Amansara
Saturday, February 21st, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Chancha Via Circuito – Amansara

Image: 1595586 Argentine producer Pedro Canale returns from a three-year sojourn with his long awaited third album. Originally coming out of Buenos Aires’s famed digital cumbia scene, Chancha has notoriously broken way outside those boundaries to forge unprecedented mergers between Brazilian rhythms, Paraguayan harp, Andean mysticism and the solitude of Argentinian folklore – all processed through his own futuristic style of postdubstep.

Chancha’s sound is without question truly unique and instantly recognizable to the point he has become a key reference point for an entire crop of artists that have begun to carry his genes.

Hailed by the Washington Post, the New York Times, Pitchfork, NPR and countless others, Chancha Via Circuito defies even the shrewdest of marketing geniuses. On one hand, he is something of a cult artist within micro-circles of electronic music, having been invited to perform at Montreal’s MUTEK as well as the Roskilde and Vive Latino Festivals. At the same time, Chancha’s music has found broad appeal outside of the avant-garde, most notably his magnificent remix of Jose Larralde’s “Quimey Neuquen” which was heavily featured in 2013 as part of the final season of the critically acclaimed television series Breaking Bad. Fans of the show undoubtedly remember Walter White burying his millions in the desert, soundtracked by the wide and gentle grooves of Chancha Via Circuito.

Amansara is a natural progressing of Chancha’s special strain of electronic South America. Lead single “Coplita” features the haunting vocals of previous collaborator Miram Garcia, while “Sueno En Paraguay” merges Andean folklore sounds with bleeps and blips and pounding drums in a way that sounds completely natural and ordained. “Jardines” features the driving vocals of Lido Pimienta merging with heavy synths, percussion and bells into an unforgettable track, while both “Tarocchi” and “Guajaca” ramp things up into deep, electronic dancefloor inna rainforest territory.

Art for Amansara comes from Argentinian psychedelic folklore painter Paula Duro who has crafted the look of all of Chancha’s previous releases. Available from 27.02.2015

Asagaya – Light Of The Dawn

Das Vinyl kommt in “oldschool replica tip on” Hülle.

“Asagaya bringt Hip Hop in eine andere Sphäre, eine alternative und transzendente. Eine Musikalität und Kreativität die ich selten erleben durfte.” – GUTS Available from 27.03.2015

Technimatic – Desire Paths LP

Image: 1591004 • GATEFOLD – 11 TRACKS ACROSS 2 X 12” HEAVYWEIGHT & CLEAR VINYL PLUS FULL ALBUM ON CD INSERT, SHRINKWRAPPED
* ‘Desire Paths’ by very definition are the story of Technimatic’s Pete Rodgers and Andy Powell. They are the trails created by human endeavour and choices, the route travelled between origin and destination, the reason the duo’s enchanting debut solo album is ready to be released for the summer of 2014. Now fully fledged members of the Shogun Audio family, it has been Technimatic’s unprecedented determination and talent that has seen them carve their own desire paths up until this very moment. Delivering an LP of beautifully hand- crafted, soulful drum & bass music you can’t help but wonder where their next journey will take them… ‘Desire Paths’.
* It’s an electronic album that has texture. Something fresh and current, but has a real feeling of nostalgia within it which gives you a flavour of where we’ve both come from musically and in terms of our normal lives. It’s about how we work, what we’ve had to do to make it happen, and what we hold to be important within our genre.
* A desire path is a route between an origin and destination created by footsteps, that often diverges away from the set and preconceived routes set out in daily life. We felt it was a nice metaphor for the journey we are on ourselves, for so long treading the standard route in life but striving to get somewhere else we are truly passionate about.”

About Technimatic:
• Musically rich, emotionally charged and evocative drum & bass has fast become the trademark sound of Pete Rogers and Andy Powell aka Technimatic, now firmly established as a mainstay of the Shogun Audio roster.
• Having started making music together back in 2008 as Technicolour & Komatic, releasing their first record ‘Preacher’ on Technique’s sister imprint Worldwide Audio, little could be known of what the future had in store. Since then the duo have gone on to release their liquid-infused blend of hyper-coloured D&B on labels such as Critical, Hospital, SGN:LTD and even the seminal Good Looking with Technicolour’s own official remix of LTJ Bukem’s ‘Music’.
• Never resting on their laurels Shogun Audio were quick to recognise the potential of Technimatic and signed them exclusively in 2012 to their sister imprint SGN:LTD. Tricky D – Equanimity
Thursday, July 10th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tricky D – Equanimity

Image: 1588823 Dean Bagar aka Tricky D was born and raised in Croatia where he trod the boards
as a visual artist as well as playing a leading role in The Punk / New-wave scene of
the early eighties. By late eighties moves to London where he discovered the power
of Reggae Sound systems. The worsening politicaltroubles and escalation of
violence in Croatia left him a refugee in Berlin, but he still found the spirit to
immerse himself in the blossoming “Daisy Age” and this is where he began his DJ /
production journey. There he got involved in cult underground club “Eimer” and
became an undergroundbreak-beat activist, and spearheaded one of the first
German Drum´n´Bass live bands, Elektronauten, and still found time to open “Tricky
Tunes” record shop and after spending some time in Jamaica where together with
his friend Mez he did a recording session with local vocalists, decided to start his
own “Tricky Tunes” label as well. In 2000 he released together with General
Electrick and Dj Deckart a couple of singles and an album under the name “Fab
Factory” where they explored and pushed the limits of 2step
garage. All the while he honed his craft as a DJ and producer. He became a
member of a visual-audio project “Digital Tattoo”. Since 2006 he has travelled often
to Colombia, where after regular collaborations with local talents, he went on to
produce and manage the Los Transatlanticos project, released on BBE in 2012.
On his debut as Tricky D the artist, he presents us with “Equanimity” introducing a
different side of his musical productions, a fusion of downbeats, soul, dub, deep
dubstepy / future garage beats and cinematic ambient layers, with a twist of Balkan
Funk here… and there of tango … and cumbia.
A beautiful adventure in music, mirroring those of his life. On the album Bagar
features vocal talents from both sides of The Atlantic hemispheres … European and
South American.

Dean Wareham – Dean Wareham
Wednesday, March 26th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dean Wareham – Dean Wareham

Image: 1587132 Dean Wareham singer/songwriter of Galaxie 500 quickly follows up last years mini album with his self titled debut album produced in full by Jim James of My Morning Jacket.

In an unprecedented burst of creativity, Dean Wareham follows his well-received solo mini-album ‘Emancipated Hearts’ just over four months later with his solo debut proper. Consisting of eight original songs and a cover of Michael Holland’s ‘Heartless People’, the self-titled album is a very different record to its predecessor, much less understated and more self-assured. No doubt partly due to its producer, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, who also plays on some of the tracks here (and turns in a remix of ‘Happy & Free’ as the iTunes bonus track). Dean has admitted that Jim James pushed him in more of a “rock” direction, something which mini-album producer Jason Quever actively shied away from. This has resulted in surprisingly direct likes of ‘Holding Pattern’ (an ode to bicoastal commuting, which inexplicably turns into a list of AOR bands “Kansas, Boston, Toto, Journey, Foreigner and Styx”) and ‘I Can Only Give My All’, which sit comfortably alongside the countryfied rock of ‘Happy & Free’ and the retro-pop of ‘The Dancer Disappears’. Dean Wareham biography Between 1987 and 1991 Dean Wareham was singer/guitarist/ songwriter with Galaxie 500, who recorded three albums for Rough Trade (now available on Domino). His next band, New York-based quartet Luna, recorded seven studio albums for Elektra and Beggars Banquet between 1992 and 2004. He has since released three albums with his wife Britta Phillips as Dean & Britta. Their most recent release was a soundtrack to accompany their multi-media show ‘13 Most Beautiful: Songs For Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests’. Dean has recently acted in the film ‘Frances Ha’, directed by Noah Baumbach, and written a memoir, ‘Black Postcards’, for Penguin Books.

KEY SELLING POINTS:
• The debut solo album proper by former Galaxie 500 and Luna frontman Dean Wareham.
• Produced by Jim James (My Morning Jacket) at his studio in Louisville,Kentucky.

Various – Copperdollar, The Back Of Beyond
Thursday, March 13th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Copperdollar, The Back Of Beyond

Available from 21.02.2014
