Cut Chemist – Funk Off Megamix
Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Cut Chemist – Funk Off Megamix

Image: 1600934 Even before rising to international attention with Jurassic 5, Cut Chemist was known as one of best
DJs in the game. Whether it’s his solo releases on his own A Stable Sound imprint or over-the-top
live performances with DJ Shadow such as Brainfreeze, Cut has always provided his audience with
a musical experience that’s fascinating, challenging and full on dope.
Presented here is his latest, ultra-limited vinyl offering – Funk Off Megamix. The debossed razor
blade on the cover is a call out to the “cut n paste” fashion of all of his mixes like The Litmus Test
and Sound Of The Police. Funk Off Megamix explores the world of early 80s synth and drum
machines primarily using material from his compilation “Cut Chemist presents Funk Off.” Cut
redefines this gritty dark post punk sound culled from original cassettes into a hip hop club dance
floor ready mix equally enjoyable when spun on your own turntable. Available from 27.11.2015

Various – CoOp presents: Selectors Assemble
Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – CoOp presents: Selectors Assemble

Image: 1610193 First Word Records are very proud to present a heavyweight EP in collaboration with seminal groove collective, CoOp: ‘Selectors Assemble’. It’s been almost two decades since a bunch of music makers, bored of the genre constraints of their time, began toying with time signature and syncopation to birth what is now known as broken beat. Summer 2017, the ‘Selectors Assemble’ EP is in our laps and we have a fitting reminder and long-overdue renaissance of one of London’s most valuable musical movements.

IG Culture and Alex Phountzi were integral to this movement, the focal point being the CoOp club night, which ran predominantly on the famed floors of Plastic People, up until 2007. CoOp remerged late in 2015 as a Boiler Room session, in which the originators linked effortlessly with new school players such as K15 and Alex Nut. The following day, a session was inspired between an assortment of artists, and the seeds were planted for the ‘Selectors Assemble’.

Here we have the first offering. The steady-paced roller of ‘Gangz’ (IG & Seiji), the dutty wine-ready getdown of Henry Wu’s ‘Substance’, the heads-down low-end theory of ‘2nd Intention’, the dominant soundclash call-out of the ‘Spartan Riddim’, riding out with the garage-flecked jam ‘Can’t Hold It’, also featuring Sonar’s Ghost (Domu). Five tracks deeply rooted in groove and as beautifully diverse as Bruk ever was.

Pressed up lovingly onto 140g vinyl, this release is accompanied with a fully-printed insert, featuring an extensive piece on the history of Bruk, written by Andwot (Touching Bass), classic photography by Sarah Ginn, and full-colour artwork by Mitchy Bwoy, a legendary artist to the original scene in his own right. This is an essential artefact for followers of the sound, new and old.

First Word prides itself on its ethos of musical diversity, and we’re ecstatic to welcome aboard the CoOp foundation to the stable. A crew of British dance music pioneers, sound-system legends, and now-school heavyweights, this is but a taste of what’s to come. Lead by the don IG Culture, the family spirit has quickly formed, the selectors have assembled.

The stage has been set for bruk’s second wind. Be ready.

Tracklisting
1. Henry Wu – Substance (IG Culture & Alex Phountzi Remix)
2. Son of Scientist – Spartan Riddim
3. NameBrandSound & Sonar’s Ghost – Can’t Hold It
4. Alex Phountzi – 2nd Intention (feat. IG Culture & Henry Wu)
5. IG Culture & Seiji – Gangz

Friday, April 7th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Como Mamas – Move Upstairs (LP+MP3)

Image: 1609173 With their first two Daptone albums – Get an Understanding, and as featured singers on Como Now – THE COMO MAMAS established themselves as three of the strongest voices in gospel music today.

In December of 2015, they cemented that reputation by taking their first trip from their home in Como, MS up to Harlem, NY to crush the Apollo Theater as part of the Daptone Super Soul Revue. Taking full advantage of their presence in town, the Daptone crew brought ESTER MAE WILBOURN, DELLA DANIELS, and ANGELIA TAYLOR into the House of Soul the week after the show to join forces for the first time with the musicians and studio that has defined their label’s sound. JIMMY HILL, THOMAS BRENNECK, HOMER STEINWEISS, and BOSCO MANN, all stalwarts of the Daptone stable, came together as “The Glorifiers Band,” to put down a churning musical foundation for these amazing singers. The results are some of the heaviest tracks that Daptone has cut to date. If you don’t like raw, soulful gospel music, you’re really gonna hate this one. Move Upstairs is a REAL mother!

Various – James Brown’s Funky People (Part 3)
Thursday, November 3rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – James Brown’s Funky People (Part 3)

Image: 1606745 “Get On Down continues its very welcome obsession with James Brown’s
stable of late ’60s and early ‘70s talent – much of it culled from his People
Records label, including various backing bands – by bringing this firsttime-
ever-on-vinyl package to the world. The third volume in the groundbreaking
Funky People series, originally released on CD in 2000, is just as
incredible as the first two. And maybe even more fascinating to JB fans,
because of the less-heard discoveries lurking in these grooves.
With 12 tracks spanning 1967 to 1975, this is far from a “remainders”
collection. Each cut here packs an undeniable punch. Featuring James’
most talented side-people, including The JBs, Bobby Byrd, Marva Whitney,
Lyn Collins and Vicki Anderson, Volume 3 goes even deeper in the
cut than previous collections, with the white Ohio-based studio crew The
Dapps (featuring drummer / vocalist Beau Dollar), the Dee Felice Trio and
even a cheekily named side crew called the A.A.B.B. (Above Average Black
Band).
There are some impressive covers here, including the Dee Felice Trio’s
driving, jazzy version of James’ “There Was A Time” (known to the
hip-hop nation thanks to Chubb Rock’s “Treat ‘Em Right”), a live version
of Lyn Collins covering the Isley Brothers’ “It’s My Thing”, in addition to
her studio cover of James’ “Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose.” In retrospect it
even sounds like James covers himself on the raw and powerful “Original
Rock Version” of his 1972 hit “Talkin’ Loud And Saying Nothin’,” even
though the Rock version was recorded first, in 1970.
Marva Whitney’s “If You Don’t Give Me What I Want” is as powerful and
emotional as a soul ballad gets. The A.A.B.B.’s “Pick Up The Pieces One
By One” must have made the Average White Band want to hang up their
instruments. And one truly fascinating alternate take here is the
“Undubbed Version” of the JBs’ “Blow Your Head,” with the Moog work
and main Fred Wesley trombone solo removed. It lets the groove shimmer
in whole new light.
The more that newcomers and diehard fans alike dig into the James
Brown and People Records vaults, the more they realize that it’s a neverending
source of truly next-level funk and soul music. And you can be
sure this aural goodness will keep flowing to the public, thanks to the
exhaustive efforts of Get On Down.”

Dark0 – Oceana
Tuesday, October 11th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dark0 – Oceana

Image: 1606858 Dark0 steps up on XL…! Big UK sound on this one.
.
London producer Dark0 has always created his music as a snapshot, a kind of journal, its sole agenda being to illustrate the thoughts, passions and frustrations of a given time and place. Previously releasing with tastemaker labels Lost Codes and Rinse, the 25-year-old’s debut for XL is the Oceana EP. Oceana describes the unstable relationship Dark0 shares with his environment, narrating the story of his city’s illusions of grandeur, mired by hypocrisy and a false sense of security. Dark0 weaves this narrative into a stunningly warm, sorrowful, yet optimistic sound creating a real cinematic journey for the listener.

Dark0, who emerged as the pioneer of melodic, grime-referencing club anthems, breaks away from his previously known sound for his XL debut. Showcasing Dark0’s ease at creating tunneling melodic earworms defined by their punishing percussion and refrain, the Oceana EP journeys through love sick, dark-pop (‘Forever’) and total euphoria (’Luka’), before retribution (‘Plague’) and ending with ‘Heal’’s redemptive qualities.

Having already gained praise from The Fader, i-D, FACT & Resident Advisor (“endlessly listenable”), Dark0’s Oceana EP cements the cult musician as one of the most skilled and revered producers London has today.

Image: 1604774 Melbourne’s Superconscious Records has become a source for straight-up, surefire club records. A string of 12″s from András, Francis Inferno Orchestra, Louis CL and more have presented a globally focused sound from a humble stable, grown out of Australia’s greatest city.

International nomad and the imprint’s co-founder Fantastic Man follows suit with the label’s sixth record Rhythm Algorithm. A hypnotic trio of mind bending explorations, all with a firm retrospective nod to the inner-city sounds that club music is built on.

Heinrich Dressel – Mons Testaceum
Saturday, March 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Heinrich Dressel – Mons Testaceum

Image: 1603195 Originally released by Legowelt’s Strange Life on a CD-r back in 2007, “Mons Testaceum” finally has its first vinyl press on Mannequin Records.
First full length released by Heinrich Dressel aka Valerio Lombardozzi, boss of the mighty Minimal Rome, “Mons Testaceum” together with “Escape From The Hill” and “Completion Of The Amphoras Table “ represented the first of a trilogy dedicated to the ‘Monte Testaccio’, an artificial mound in Rome composed almost entirely of ‘testae’, fragments of broken amphorae dating from the time of the Roman Empire.

“Mons Testaceum” is the second appearance of Valerio Lombardozzi on Mannequin Records, after the noirish atmospheric ‘Sighing Melodies Thru The Graves’ mini lp released in 2012 as MNQ 027 on white vinyl.

The sound of the album is moving somewhere hidden between Fabio Frizzi (‘Paura Nella Città Dei Morti Viventi’) and Goblin (‘Buio Omega’), thanks the extensive use of the Italian – better, Roman – legendary synthesizer Elka Synthex in every single track, with touches of the Berlin electronic school, “mixed with irresistable futuristic soulfunk synth solos (Kool and the Gang goes cosmic!)”.

Impressive stuff, which influenced deeply the sound of Mannequin Records itself during the years after it was released. TIP!

Mastered by Andrea Merlini.

Graphic design by Dave Grave and Alessandro Adriani.

Limited Edition of 400 copies. Available from 01.04.2016

Connie Case – Get Down
Saturday, November 7th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Connie Case – Get Down

Image: 1600789 Official re issue of this seminal electro-disco stomper from the vaults of Konduko. Re mastered for 2015.

Notes taken from Disco Not Disco compilation notes :

“Miami contributed to its own sound to the disco of the ’70’s, mainly through the network of labels operating under the TK Disco umbrella, including Sunshine Sound (founded by members of KC & The Sunshine band), Marlin, Alston, Bold and King Sporty’s Konduko label. Sporty had been a stalwart of the reggae production since the early 60’s but by the early 70’s in Miami the market for reggae was dwindling and Sporty was trying new fusions with the bands in his stable like the Chosen Few who turned out some fiery funk covers. As disco exploded, Sporty followed, this time with an even stronger identity. Other Miami based reggae musicians had followed suit – Noel Williams’ Disco Connection had covered Michael Jackson and Mcfadden & Whitehead reggae-disco style and Joe Gibbs had taken on “Rappers Delight”, “I Can’t Stand The Rain” through his own Joe Gibbs imprint. Sporty had gained notriety from a disco version of Bob Marley’s “Buffalo Solider” which remained on acetate for years and continued to develop his own off-kilter disco directions as music went electronic in the early 80’s with his band the Ex Tras. One of the vocalists from the band Connie Case, lay down this fierce electro stomper in 1982.”

Gino Parks – Fire / For This I Thank You
Tuesday, September 15th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gino Parks – Fire / For This I Thank You

Image: 1599544 Two absolute winners from Gino Parks, a singer whose career took off when he moved to Detroit in the mid-50s. Beginning with a number of duets with the notorious Andre Williams for the equally legendary Fortune label, Parks then appeared as a solo artist for Berry Gordy’s then fledgling Tamla stable. These two sides appeared in 1962 on the second of three singles cut for Tamla. This is really a true double A, we’re sure you will find it impossible to pick between the evocative, infectious early soul sound of ‘For This I Thank You’ and the all guns blazing R&B explosion of ‘Fire’. Our solution is to play them back to back, loud…

Image: 1597065 The first release on Trax naturally came from the Jesse Saunders stable. It was an agreement between pressing plant owner Sheerman and Saunders and Vince Lawrence that led to the formation of the label. Early pressings even had a Jes Say catalogue number etched in them, through subsequent editions bear the Trax cat. no. “Wanna Dance”, unusually for Trax is not really house at all, bearing far more similarities with the experimental productions of On-U-Sound and the Doug Wimbish/Skip McDonald crew. Says Vince “This is built around the fact that we found out that could call the Linn drum people and order a chip and that said somethin’ – we got our first sampler. When we learned that you could say shit and play it like an instrument that was a big deal then.”

Repressed & remastered for 2015 & featuring all original label artwork, with permission from Trax records “Wanna Dance?” is now available again to be rediscovered.

Sly Stone / Various – I’m Just Like You: Sly’s Stone Flower 1969-70
Saturday, October 11th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sly Stone / Various – I’m Just Like You: Sly’s Stone Flower 1969-70

Image: 1593197 In 1970, The Family Stone were at the peak of their popularity, but the maestro Sly Stone had already moved his head to a completely different space. The first evidence of Sly’s musical about-turn was revealed by the small catalog of his new label, Stone Flower: a pioneering, peculiar, minimal electro-funk sound that unfolded over just four seven-inch singles. Stone Flower’s releases were credited to their individual artists, but each had Sly’s design and musicianship stamped into the grooves-and the words ”Written by Sylvester Stewart/Produced and arranged by Sly Stone” on the sticker.

Set up by Stone’s manager David Kapralik with distribution by Atlantic Records, Stone Flower was, predictably, a family affair: the first release was by Little Sister, fronted by Stone’s little sister Vaetta Stewart. It was short lived too-the imprint folded in 1971-but its influence was longer lasting. The sound Stone formulated while working on Stone Flower’s output would shape the next phase in his own career as a recording artist: it was here he began experimenting with the brand new Maestro Rhythm King drum machine. In conjunction with languid, effected organ and guitar sounds and a distinctly lo-fi soundscape, Sly’s productions for Stone Flower would inform the basis of his masterwork There’s A Riot Goin’ On.

The first 45 came in February 1970: Little Sister’s dancefloor-ready ”You’re The One” hit Number 22 in the charts-the label’s highest showing. The follow-up, ”Stanga,” also by Little Sister, made the wah pedal the star. The third release came from 6IX, a six-piece multi-racial rock group whose sole release, a super-slow version of The Family Stone’s ”Dynamite,” featured only the lead singer and harmonica player from the group. Joe Hicks was the final Stone Flower stablemate, his pulsing, electronic ”Life And Death In G&A” is one of the bleakest moments Sly Stone ever created on disc (Hicks’ prior single for Scepter, ”Home Sweet Home,” the first released Stone Flower production, is also included).

This long overdue compilation of Sly’s Stone Flower era gathers each side of the five 45s plus ten previously unissued cuts from the label archives, all newly remastered from the original tapes. In these grooves you’ll find the missing link between the rocky, soulful Sly Stone of Stand! and the dark, drum machine-punctuated, overdubbed sound of There’s A Riot Going On. I’m Just Like You: Sly’s Stone Flower 1969-70 opens up the mysteries of an obscure but monumental phase in Stone’s career.

Oliver Koletzki

It sounds like a fairy tale: In 2005, 29-year old Oliver Koletzki presses 500 copies of his underground hit “Der Mückenschwarm” onto vinyl. One of those white labels lands in Sven Väth’s record bag and whenever he plays the track, the people go wild. Shortly thereafter techno-king Väth signs the track on his empire Cocoon […]

Jamie Hustle – Pleasure Dome

Image: 1581756 Formula Records introduces another newcomer to the stable for the second release in a row after Notion turned heads with his blistering Digits EP last summer. This time around label boss Champion turns his attentions to the mysterious Jamie Hustle – whose take on bass-led House fiercely remains true to the dancefloor-orientated ethos that Formula Records has operating by since its inception in 2011. With details on the producers identity and background scarce, he has left it to his productions to tell his story for him and the Pleasure Dome EP is a swift insight into his musical mind with two killer tracks of unapologetic bassline fuelled party-starters. Opener ‘Pleasure Dome’ is layered with pitch bent synths that aren’t a million miles away from a Sci-Fi movie soundtrack whilst the booming 4/4 drum pattern allow this one to fit neatly into House & Garage DJ sets without foregoing the immediacy of the UK Bass Music. On the B-side ‘One Objective’ has more of an anthemic feel to it with intermittent key stabs that lead into a drop of heavy duty kicks and claps that’s aided by a vocal sample with the tracks title in it – rounding off a storming introduction to the distinct sounds of Jamie Hustle, a hidden gem who looks like he won’t be just that for too much longer on this form.

Neve Naive – Dancer (Remixes)
Thursday, June 6th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Neve Naive – Dancer (Remixes)

Image: 1579900 Producer/multi-instrumentalist Stefan “Merse” Ulrich and
singer/songwriter Neve aka Alexa Voss are Neve Naive. And with
“The Inner Peace Of Cat And Bird” they just released on Sonar
Kollektiv one of the most astonishing debut albums of the year.
The first single off the album, “Dancer”, is now being released
with three remixes – each of them as particular as inspiring. On
the A side you get the one by Superluminal. After the three guys
from Warsaw, Fabian, Greg and Cbass, have provided their typical
funky sound to the remix of Jazzanova’s “I Human” last year, they
were eventually first choice for a rework of “Dancer”. The track now
even more makes you get a move on and grooves thanks to a fresh
rhythm guitar and added percussion right across the dance floor with
a big feisty grin.
Paskal & Urban Absolutes also want to squeeze the funk out of the
track. As you know funk appears in different shapes and forms
though. The one by the remixing duo of the hour comes in much
more sec and impulsive. The arrangement has been totally disposed
as well – everything pointing towards 5 o’clock in the morning, the
time when sweat and tears of joy start to blend.
The third remixer isn’t a new name in Sonar Kollektiv’s stable as
well. Moscow based Phil Gerus belongs, next to Paskal & Urban
Absolutes, to the uprising shooting stars of the label. He owes
less to the dance floor than to the things that happen afterwards,
after a long night out. His remix of “Dancer” displays again
impressively why he is one of the leading spearheads of chillwave.
The original is put through the mill so drastically that in the end only
the essence of it is left over. And in a medicative way or so this just
feels so damn good.

Not a resurrection, but a rebirth. In 2006, we were first hearing what seemed to us a conundrum: gospel singers performing pious gospel songs, and devoutly, but doing so amid hot, sweaty, earthy sounds drunk on the same moonshine downed by any blues singer thumbing his way up north from the Mississippi delta. The Father […]

Guilty Simpson

Guilty Simpson‘s “Ode To The Ghetto” debut album is a bone-crushing sonic sucker punch straight from the gritty city streets of Detroit. Thanks to ferocious displays at open mic battles, on mixtapes, and various venomous guest verses – as well as J Dilla’s public endorsement as one of his favourite rappers – Guilty Simpson is already firmly established as one of America’s hottest underground talents and now stands on the cusp of widespread acclaim.

A colossal, hard-hitting presence, Guilty possesses a rare gravity and charisma on the mic reflecting inspirations such as Kool G Rap, Mobb Deep, NWA and Wu-Tang. Yet while his tough talk initially seems to place him firmly and exclusively in the camp of the microphone mobsters, Guilty is also a keen student of his art and holds a willingness to experiment often shunned by the solely thugged-out. Previous output with Dabrye and Four Tet, creations with Madlib, and allegiance to the Stones Throw stable are all testaments to a wider worldview and demonstrate his ability to unite harder-edged rap and more unorthodox styles …
