Says Heyne: “The number of parameters that determine a recording appears to be infinite. The mood, instrument, tuning, mics,
room, temperature, time of day, all contribute to sound. The
magic, once captured, is impossible to recreate. This might seem
a hindrance, but it’s really the whole point of recording for me.”
Opener ‘Carry’, for example, is a composition carefully developed
over months with most of the production happening in front of the
microphone. ‘Wilde Wide’, however, was recorded only once as
an early-morning improvisation.
Having worked with Dustin O’Halloran on the Emmy-winning
Transparent soundtrack and with clarinettist Claudio Puntin as
part of the duo Set Aglow, Heyne’s sound is one of simplified
diversity. On his debut album he controls each melody with the
precision of a veteran producer. The intricate chords of Carry, the
use of silence in Patina, the driving quietude of Fårö, they all invite
to creep in close to hear his message. While most of the album’s
tracks seamlessly melt into each other, the beats of Come On
actively stand out, forcing the listener to sit up and pay attention,
“like an espresso in the afternoon.”
Born in Hamburg, Heyne taught himself the guitar and piano at an
early age, learning by the geography of keys and strings rather
than via traditional methods. His unorthodox tendencies filtered
into an adolescence of more classical training at the Conservatory
of Amsterdam and residencies across the UK. In 2009, Heyne set
up his unique Lichte Studio in Berlin, where he has worked with
the likes of The National, Nils Frahm, Lubomyr Melnyk, Peter
Broderick and Efterklang, with whom he also extensively toured.

Hior Chronik – Out Of The Dust

B6 That Mistery Again

Seductive and cinematic soundscapes between ambient, drone and
indie-neoclassical music: these are the best words to describe Hior
Chronik’s style. A style that captures ears and soul, bringing you into an
imaginary world, arousing emotions, making the mind wander to distant
places. This is the goal of the Greek musician, now living half of the year
in Athens and the other half in Berlin. You can hear it in his new record “Out
Of The Dust”, produced by himself, mixed by John Vallasis and mastered
by Francesco Donadello at Calyx Studio, Berlin.
“I tried to combine ambient and drone sounds with strings and piano
following a harmonic direction”, Chronik explains. “I wanted to make a
soundtrack for a movie that was never shot”. The mood is melancholic, but
not only that: “There’s a dark side, but I made it run parallel with bright soft
melodies”, Chronik continues. And on the topic of his music influences:
“It’s hard to specify what exactly they were, but I think I’m close to Max
Richter and in some ways to Arvo Part. Besides that, true inspiration
comes from my life experiences, even the small little things: books, films,
people I meet, travels. And being close to nature: I would say that’s the
base of everything”.
After three solo records and two in collaboration with Arovane, Chronik is
now ready to launch his new work “Out of The Dust”. “The title is a political
quote about how we can fight against the crisis, but also against the
existential anguish of surviving. A movement of no fear and the beginning
of a new life”, he explains. On how he developed the songs, he says: “I
recorded piano, trumpet and strings in their analogic sound, then I used
effects as I always do for the ambient and drone sounds”.
“Out Of The Dust” shows a personal and unique style that brings Hior
Chronik’s music to a wider audience. His sound is able to embrace at the
same time the delicate piano themes and the dark ambient/drone tones,
while at the same time searching for new territories to explore in the
neo-classical scene.

KEY POINTS
• First indie classica, minimalistic, drone release on 7K!
• Mastered by Francesco Donadello at Calyx
• full world audiovisual tour with piano, computers, strings and trumpet

Henrik Schwarz and !K7 are proud to announce a collaboration that will bare many different musical fruits. The first of these is a brand new label called Between Buttons, curated by Henrik and focused on acoustic sounds and contemporary compositions. Between Buttons will be in partnership with !K7’s own neo-classical hub 7K!, and will kick off with a new mini LP by Schwarz entitled Works Piano, followed by an EP entitled Aphorisms by Syrian artists Khaled Kurbeh & Raman Khalaf Ensemble.
Mixing up old and new technologies, experimental and more classical approaches, the label will see Schwarz forge new paths in his own work, as well as curating material from the peers he has worked with over the last 15 years. Mainly made up of acoustic sounds, piano, string quartets, self-built instruments, percussion and intriguing classicist elements with a modern twist, there will be EPs from piano virtuoso Bugge Wesseltoft, as well as other electronic producers wanting to show themselves in a different, more ‘unplugged’ light. “In these times of constant turbo mode, likes and thumbs-up, we need to go back to basics,” says Henrik. “We want to move away from the idea that relentless hasty productivity is a must, and instead take time to create space, to let ideas mature and to focus the mind on subtler sounds.”
Works Piano will be a four track mini album that uses a Yamaha Disklavier as the starting point and reimagines it, reworks it and alters it with various digital and recording technologies. One track is a created with a reactive algorithm and one is composed purely from altered and processed piano sounds. Available from 30.06.2017

“Cinematic feasts of dramatic strings and cascading pianos that will satisfy fans of Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds” The Ransom Note

On 2nd June !K7 records contemporary classical imprint 7K! will release ‘Endless’ – the new album played entirely by Luca D’Alberto – the Italian composer who counts Wim and Donata Wenders, Peter Lindbergh and Lars Von Trier’s Zentropa as fans. Driven by pristine piano and rich strings, ‘Endless’ is sonically opulent with vivid, wonder-evoking pieces conveying wintry, widescreen panoramas and a propulsive arpeggio-fueled energy. Luca composed, arranged and played all instruments on ‘Endless’ himself – the violin, viola, violectra, cello and piano. It was produced by Martyn Heyne (who has worked with Nils Frahm, Lubomir Melnyk, Peter Broderick, Tiny Ruins and The National), with additional production by the lauded DJ/musician Henrik Schwarz. D’Alberto graduated ‘summa cum laude’ with a Ministerial Mention at the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali G. Braga in Teramo, Abruzzo, where he was born and raised. He has performed at prestigious events including the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch in Germany for the ‘Pina40 Festival’, and has worked with various influential figures in the Italian movie and theater world: These include ‘Lampedusani’ – a film-based art project by Luca, the award winning director Costanza Quatriglio and the renowned novelist/poet Erri De Luca, whilst orchestration and full scores were provided by D’Alberto for films including Giorgio Albertazzi’s ‘Giacomo Puccini’, Michele Placido’s ‘La Scelta’, plus ‘Sembra Mio Figlio’ and ‘9X10 Novanta’ by Costanza Quatriglio.

Royalston – OCD (12”+CD)
Sunday, March 9th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Royalston – OCD (12”+CD)

Image: 1587171 The debut album from Royalston “OCD” on Med School Music. Medschool hits 2014 running after it’s biggest year yet in 2013 with debut albums from Lung and the massive Etherwood, winner of Best Newcomer Producer and Best Newcomer DJ at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards.
* Opening track “Jungle Gone Down” features the fiery voice of August Storm, setting the bar for the whole album with a graceful intro building up to the uncompromising jungle drop.

12″ LP contains three tracks per side, and also includes full CD album in matching sleeve.
Sydney-based, classically trained, DJ / producer Dylan Martin (middle name “Royalston”) has been listening to Drum + Bass since ’93, producing for 12 years and DJ-ing for about 10. A man of many talents, Royalston is also an illustrator / designer and first got into music production when he was making a soundtrack to a 3D animation. His music is characterized by a raw, analogue sound with a tech-y edge (thanks to plenty of hardware like his favourite Korg MS-20) and he has released on labels such as Bad Taste and Black Acre before signing exclusively to Med School in 2012.
* Royalston cut his teeth on Med School with “The Test” – a track which appeared on “New Blood 010? and remains one of his favourite tunes to date. He swiftly followed this up with his first vinyl release, the vitriolic “Glitchbitch”, dedicated to his ex girlfriend, on “More Blood 010?. Royalston wowed us with a release on Bad Taste and a super sharp remix of Art vs Science – “Magic Fountain”, which started life as a bootleg, was made legit and subsequently received heavy support from London Elektricity and currently has 250,000 plays on YouTube. In November 2011, Royalston was back with more musical mayhem in his exceptional, four-track “Cerulean Blue” EP. We are ecstatic to release his debut album “OCD” and have no doubt it will hit the scene with some impact.

Various – New Blood 013 LP
Sunday, May 19th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – New Blood 013 LP

Image: 1580279 Continuing the ever-successful New Blood series into the year 2013 and beyond is the next instalment of fresh cuts from a whole new generation of Med School undergraduates. Featuring the undiscovered stars of the future, ‘New Blood 013’ brings together a collection of sounds from the underground and presents them as a compilation album that will impress D&B specialists from across the board.

‘New Blood 013’ boasts a diverse tracklist and although it is predominantly D&B, there are some half-time tracks, dubstep, downtempo and experimental rhythms which makes for an expansive and genre-crossing listen. From the blissed out soundscape and whispering in Etherwood’s “Unfolding” through the glitchy experimentalism of Bakai’s “Kaikaki” and the moody murkiness of Minor Rain’s “Plasticity” to the incredible textures of Joe Ford’s “Frozen Sound”, there is plenty to discover across the 14-track album.

Featuring some more familiar names such as New Blood 011’s Anile, Blood Pressure’s TwoThirds and Barefoot, tech-heads Optiv & CZA, the elusive Mr Sizef from St Petersburg, the ever-promising Etherwood and Joe Ford, there are, as always with a ‘New Blood’ album, a host of lesser known artists who are names to watch for the future. Expect the unexpected and you might be prepared for ‘New Blood 013’ and its epic array of new talent.

The launch party for ‘New Blood 013’ will take place at Fabric, London on Friday 22nd March where you can catch: London Elektricity (Med School Set), Joe Syntax, Lung, Etherwood, Joe Ford + MCs Ruthless, Juma Phist.

Press / Promotion: Comprehensive campaign in-house serving all UK music and dance titles as well as national, regional and student press – Mixmag, DJ, Trap, Notion, Music Week, Future Music, Time Out, Metro (London + regional
editions), London Evening Standard, The Guardian, The Independent, Dazed + Confused, Vice, The Wire, The Fly, Vice Magazine, Clash.

Maceo Plex – DJ-Kicks
Friday, May 17th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Maceo Plex – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1579679 Sometimes you have to look backwards to move forwards. In the case of Maceo Plex’s DJ Kicks mix, it’s case of looking back with a different perspective. While Maceo Plex’s mix is composed mainly of records that are up to 20 years old, it’s the tone of those records that is important.
Eric Estornel, to use Plex’s real name, has certainly come up with a forward-thing set that doesn’t sound like much else out there.

“The whole mix is very dark,” agrees Estornel. “But it’s very varied as well. It’s really boring to stay one style. If you’re a lover of music, you don’t love one style. I think it’s important to travel through different styles.” The end result is an education, a lesson in how electronic music for the dancefloor is done with intelligence.

Crucially, Estornel has re-edited nearly every track on the mix. “Most of the tracks are really old, so they needed freshening up,” he says. “A lot of them were missing percussion, or some other element I thought they could use.” I went through my own stuff and previous DJ Kicks mixes. Y’know, research. I think it is the most important mix series so I wanted to make sure it was music that I really loved and I want to hear in five or ten years time.
But isn’t it a bit of a contradiction, trying to bump electronic music out of a retro rut by looking to a different set of old records. Estornel reasons it thus: “A lot of the music on there is old, but basically has the sounds and the type of vibe that I think is missing these days. I went through a lot of new music. I didn’t want to select anything that everyone is playing at the moment and I definitely didn’t want to select anything that was already out on digital. The whole mix is comprised of vinyl only and is not going to be out on digital other than the DJ Kicks mix. To do that I had to go through a lot of new music and a lot of old music, and there wasn’t much new music that I really loved.
In time-honoured tradition, the mix contains a massive 10! exclusive tracks, the lead kicks track bing Galactic Cinema, a muscular and suitably off-world house chug. “I’m kind of known for a couple of big disco records and some really deep bassline house tracks, but that track much darker, but still pretty sexy and soulful. The whole thing is dark and futuristic.”

“This mix is kind of my legacy, or, at least, part of it,” says Estornel, by way of a parting thought. “In ten or twenty years I’m going to want to go back and listen to this mix and I hope it’s still fresh.”
Who knows. It sounds pretty timeless right now, though.
