Image: 1595790 Returning again for the second year running we have a super special Record Store Day release from New York's favourite art-funk sisters, ESG. Pumping their way out of the South Bronx of New York in the early 80s, this rhythm and dance-punk outfit made unforgettable funk that was also unusually rooted in post-punk. This powerhouse of raw and cutting edge music ultimately made them ahead of their time. Leading with their debut self-titled EP which was released on 99 Records in 1981, they had the helping hand of legendary producer Martin Hannett (Joy Division and Factory Records director) applying his masterful skills to production on a few tracks. ESG enjoyed success sharing stages with PiL and Gang Of Four and have been heavily sampled as many musicians including TLC, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys and Liars. Pioneers in their own right, The Moody EP opens with 'You're No Good', an energetic and seductively smoky cover version with Motown sister-group style vox and punchy punk yelps while 'UFO's distinctively eerie feedback and heavy production has gone on to be one of the most sampled tracks in hip hop. This celebrated track, with Hannett back on production, has been sampled on over three hundred songs. The groove-laden 'Moody' with minimal percussion and sunken basslines dominates the second half, closing this tasty EP is an alternative reprise, a funkadelic version of 'Moody (Spaced Out)'. ESG was formed by four sisters: Deborah Scroggins (bass, vocals), Maria Scroggins (congas, vocals), Renee Scroggins (guitar, vocals), Valerie Scroggins (drums), and friend Leroy Glover (bass). 45rpm Green, Blue and yellow splatter vinyl with download code.
