In 1977 The Congos recorded in Lee Perry’s Black Ark studios, the album “Heart Of The Congos”, widely regarded as one of the most consumate and important reggae records ever made. Originally held back by Island Records for fear it would interfere with the push to take Bob Marley to global heights, ask any reggae officianados – The Heart Of The Congos’ is up there with the best.
Although the Black Ark studios burned to the ground – by Lee Perry himself he claims – the title “Back In The Black Ark” refers to the reunion of the Congos – Cedric Myton, Ashanti Roy and Watty Burnett – with Lee Perry! The Congos reformed in 2006 after a hiatus of over 20 years, and in the last few years have toured and played at many Europe’s biggest Festivals – Dour, Roskilde, Summerjam, Rototom Sunsplash, a.o.
Time had come to go back into the studio in Jamaica and put a new chapter in the history of reggae. The Congos’ sublime falsetto / tenor / baritone harmonies combine with some of the most experiencedand accomplished reggae musicians of all time (Boris Gardner, Winston Jones, Dwight Pickney, Robbie Lyn, Horsemouth Wallace and others) all with Lee Perry’s hand at the controls.
“Back In The Black Ark” is an album that proves that The Congos are still masters of roots reggae!
