6672The highly anticipated collaboration between Horace Andy and Alpha is finally released after years in the making matching Horace’s highly distinctive vocal style to Corin Dingley’s signature production.

Highlights include the opener “Storm” with its woozy loops rocked along by the veteran’s soulful delivery followed in sharp contrast by the heavier dubstep of “Make My Day”, 8 and a half minutes of rumbling basslines and skittering rhythms not dissimilar to some of the early “Rhythm & Sound 10” dubplates.

This is a modern dub record with many upbeat moments, surprising given Alpha’s usual love of torch songs. Evidence of this is on tracks like “Storm Shine” which recalls Alpha’s more experimental work (as evidenced on their “Lost In A Garden Of Clouds” albums). Sesame Street synths and trippy filters combine a sound as beaming as the Cookie Monster skipping merrily though a field of chocolate chip Marylands.

Tracks are allowed to bleed out, many of them continuing on long after Horace has finished singing and even on the more traditional “Declaration Of Rights” there is a gentle experimental wobble to the production and this collaboration is not so unlikely given Alpha were the first artist to be signed to Massive Attack’s Melankolic label.

“The album I have been waiting for since I heard Horace Andy on Massive Attack’s “Protection” album. Heavy dub bass pounding along with jumped-up beats and sci-fi electronics” Properly Chilled Magazine
