2521The meaning of the verb declaim is “to speak loudly and with rhetorical effect”. Just add an “e” to it and you have the epitome of an emcee who truly believes in this art form that he considers his artform. Declaime calls his music Illmindmuzik. Just listen to any of his tracks and you know what he means.

He grew up across the street from Madlib who started making beats at the age of 8 with Declaime trying to rap over them since then. His stepfather was a DJ. He used to go to LA with him to do record shopping before his teens. Declaime has been down with the CDP Assassins and Lootpack for years because he’s friends with Madlib. But first and foremost Declaime is his own man. He was a professional guest artist for years before he dropped his own records and was on DJ Babu’s (Dilated Peoples / Beat Junkies) very first mixtape with a group called the Funk Farm on the song “Gamblers Luck”. First time on record he did a little stint with the Alkaholiks on the Madlib-produced “WLIX” from their second album “Coast II Coast” on Loud. The beat originally appeared on a demo Declaime had sent to Loud. Tash from the Alkaholiks let Declaime be on the song if he gave him the “WLIX” beat, so he did. He followed up guesting on Lootpack’s “The Attack Of The Tupperware Puppets” from their self-distributed “Psyche Move EP” and on their landmark Stones Throw album “Sound Pieces The Antidote” on the Songs “Break Dat Party” and “Episodes”. For those who didn’t notice, he also did the intro on the first Quasimoto single. His first solo release was the “Illmindmusic EP” on Goodvibe produced by Madlib the badkid. A double 12″ that introduced the Illmindmuzik concept to the world and featured Lootpack, Evidence of Dilated Peoples and Spontaneous.
