The Society is the brainchild of Danish jazz composer Thomas Hass Christiensen – composer, arranger and saxophonist and touring member of the globe trotting Senor Coconut ensemble. Marrying authentic jazz instrumentation and structure to computer based production, the outift focus their love of all things soulful – be it house, hip hop or jazz – to create a truly unique and heartfelt style. The formula worked well, leading them to Philadelphia where they remixed spoken word queen Ursula Rucker’s first single “Supa Sista” and produced the sublime “Q&A” on her “Silver Or Lead” album. In May 2003 they released their very own single “How’s Life” on US label Nite Grooves / King Street. Featuring OvaSoul 7 on vocal duties it became an instant anthem, gaining huge props from DJs such as Masters At Work, King Britt, Viktor Duplaix and Rainer Truby. The first ever Society album “Electronic Bionic” was a deep and moving yet sprightly and danceable LP, featuring the cream of the burgeoning Philly Soul scene on vocal duties as well as some undiscovered gems. It appealed to jazz heads with its strains of Miles Davis’s electro-era jazz fusion, while others latched onto the kinetic broken beat sound championed by artists such as 4Hero and Bugz in the Attic, but always with a unique Society twist.

Their second album “HeavyMightyMoodyGroovy” picks up where the last one left off. The opener “What He Needs to Know” is a slab of space-soul-funk with it’s ever so slightly eerie layered vocals; “Sweeping Tom” is a jazzy house number with more than a nod to broken beat with its infectious sliced bass line with brass section riffs that sounds like a Quantic produced St. Germain record; “Be Kind to Your Mind” is a slice of dubby soul with booming bass worthy of the biggest soundsystems, and “Love Love” comes across like the kind of track you’d get if Timbaland, Unklejam and Amp Fiddler got together for a cup of tea and a jam session.

“HeavyMightyMoodyGroovy” is an album with a broad range of styles that should appeal to all levels of society, being all 4 adjectives of its namesake and more!

The album The Society HeavyMightyMoodyGroovy” (Freestyle) is going to be rleased May 18, 2007.
