After producing two stellar albums of ambient soul with his group Spacek, London-based singer and producer Steve Spacek set up in California and recorded his first solo album with occasional help from the likes of heavyweight producer J Dilla (R.I.P.) and legendary Motown figure Leon Ware. Released in October 2005, “Space Shift” on Sound In Color retained the dreamy atmospheres of the Spacek albums, but it was juicier and looser, with harder-hitting beats and a relaxed state of mind.

Inspired throughout his career by Leon Ware, Ronald Isley, Marvin Gaye, and Curtis Mayfield, Spacek’s voice has never possessed bold power, but his silky atmospheres have always been welcomed in an era of flash and overstated emotion.

The following ten albums are some of Steve Spacek’s most favourite records of all time:

01. Björk – Debut (Elektra)
02. A Tribe Called Quest – Love Movement (Jive)
03. A Tribe Called Quest – Midnight Marauders (Jive)
04. Michael Jackson – Off The Wall (Epic)
05. Bob Marley – Uprising (Tuff Gong)
06. Grace Jones – Warm Leatherette (Island)
07. Brian Eno & David Byrne – My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts (Sire)
08. Bob Marley – Exodus (Tuff Gong)
09. Slum Village – Fantastic Vol.1 (Barak)
10. Loose Ends – Zagora (MCA)
