In 1993 the spotlight was on Mary Anne “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira, Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving who together made up the Digable Planets. They constructed a unique melding of socio-political hip-hop with uber-cool jazz loops to form their debut album. “Reachin (A New Refutaation Of Time And Space)” was an instant success and included the top 20 single “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like That)”. This track scored the trio a Grammy and is still considered one of the most influential 12″ in hip-hop history.

Mary Anne Santos Vieira was born on August 25th to musician Brazilian parents who were, that’s how Ladybug Mecca was introduced to the beauty of samba and bossa-nova rhythms. She was also influenced by Joao Gilberto and the afrobeat rhythms of Fela Kuti.

Progressive bands of the 80s opened the was for her diverse expression of sound “ ˜When I first heard MC Lyte and Queen Latifa I knew that I could be clever and witty with my cadence through rhyming’, she explains, ˜Dakota Staton and Eric Dolphy’s music enabled me to fuse the cool slickness that I am known for into my hip-hop flow. Let’s just say that “Trip The Light Fantastic” has no genre classification and is simply music. A combination of my life experiences and musical influences created this body of work.’

On “You Never Get Over It” Ladybug describes the pain of losing both parents so suddenly. “Don’t Disturb The Peace” tells the unnerving tale of her experience with domestic abuse where as “Children Say” describes her childhood within the social construct. In the song “Remember When”, she sings of her first true experience with love, and in “Sexual Alchemy” she describes her newly found intimate freedom. These recordings play an organic truth that is uniquely her own and she will impact the world as only she can. Ladybug Mecca, Gwen Stefani, Andre 3000, K-OS and RES are the new breed of urban alternative artists.

The album Ladybug MeccaTrip The Light Fantastic” (Nu Paradigm) is going to be released July 25, 2005.
