Uncle Junior’s Friday Fish Fry Mix Series hits stores November 4th with Djinji Brown’s The Market

Brooklyn, NY- On special Fridays on the 16th floor in apartment C in the 880 Building on Boynton Ave in the Soundview section of the Bronx, Hudson Jackson would walk in around 5 or so with a plastic bag filled with packages wrapped in yellow paper. Then from the top shelf above the stove next to where the playing cards were kept he would pull down the deep fryer. Next thing you know there was the snap, crackle, and pop of hot grease, the smell of steaming hot scallops, shrimp and flounder, stated Wes Jackson, label head of Uncle Junior Records. My pops was frying fish and it was going to be a good night. By 8p.m. there were friends and family lined up in the dining room waiting for the next batch. Orange sodas for the kids, Ballantine and Bacardi for the adults. Eventually the music came in and it was a party. Wes adds, Those Fridays were some of the best times in 16C and that is what I hope to re-create for everyone who has the pleasure of picking up any and all installments of the Uncle Junior’s Friday Fish Fry Series.

On those Fridays you would hear anything from George Benson to Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band to Kool And the Gang to Stevie to EWF. This mix series will keep it true to that diversity. You will get everything from soul to house to Latin Jazz to rare grooves to Afro beat to broken beat and everything in between. All mixed by our favorite artists, DJ’s, Music aficionados and cousins. There will be 6 installments that will not only give you the music to rock to at your Fish Frys but there will be tips from Uncle Junior himself on how to correctly hook up a Fish Fry. #1 “ The Market, #2 “ The Cleaning, #3 “ The Seasoning, #4 “ The Frying, #5 “ The Grub, #6 “ The Dishes

Djinji Brown will be doing us the pleasure of mixing ˜The Market.’ The album seamlessly flows from the theme song of the 1970’s martial arts classic ˜Black Belt Jones’, to the broken-beat groove of Agent K, to the latin-jazz giant Mongo Santamaria, to the afrobeat horns of Manu Dibango, to the classic funk of Brass Construction, to the underground soul of Pevin Everett & Jazzy Jeff, to a dub treatment of Gregory Issacs, to a haunting sax solo by Djinji’s father, Marion, and much more. The end result is an orgy of styles, lovingly overseen and arranged by the good Mr. Brown.

Djinji Brown released his critically acclaimed album, Sirround Sound in 2002. It featured the singles Mojuba and Abuelita’s Dance. Djinji’s music roots are expansive; he has worked with the artistic minds of Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, A Tribe Called Quest, Cassandra Wilson, Barrington Levy, and a myriad of others.

Uncle Junior Records (named after Wes Jackson’s father) is distributed by 7Heads Recordings, and will focus on the non-straight up hip-hop ventures of Seven Heads including jazz, afro-beat, soul and various forms of Blacktronica. Seven Heads began in 1996 as an independent promotions company. It has since evolved into a record label and management that represents such artists as Wordsworth, Asheru, and Richy Pitch.

Be on the look out for the next installment of the Fish Fry Series, The Cleaning mixed by legendary crate diggers, Kon & Amir of On Track fame. The Cleaning will feature the dustiest, funkiest grooves ever served up including Gwen McRae, The Chosen Few and Pacific Standard.

Don’t Miss the Seven Heads all-stars tour featuring Asheru, Richy Pitch, Wordsworth and J-Live
