Fat Freddy’s Drop are one of the most exciting live bands to emerge from Wellington/New Zealand in the last couple of years. A by-product of a scene steeped in dub, reggae and dancefloor orientated electronica, they are best known for their extensive late night sets. Their songs are a constantly evolving organic experience, rhythm heavy with coatings of jazz, soul and funk, rooted in Aotearoa and delivered with an island attitude.

The jamming process starts with DJ Fitchie programming beats into the Akai MPC; then comes Joe Dukie with that sweet sweet voice; Jetlag Johnson on guitar and Doby Blaze on keys adding layers of blues and funk, and lastly the horn section – Fulla Flash on Sax, Sugar Two-Tone on Trumpet and Hopepa on Trombone – who bring an old worlde jazz charm to the unique fusion styles of Fat Freddy’s Drop.

They’ve been playing together for over three years and have supported visiting luminaries such as the Mad Professor, Masters At Work, Jazzanova, Afro Celt Sound System and so on. They have recorded a live album, released independently, which was taken from shows at The Matterhorn, Wellington’s infamous late night drinking den, a hotbed of musical iniquity tucked away off a main street.

Finally making their debut 12″ release to underground DJ acclaim in August last year under the production guise of Joe Dukie & DJ Fitchie, Midnight Marauders was signed to Sonar Kollektiv’s prestigious Best Seven imprint after being spun by Recloose on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide radio show. The debut ‘Fat Freddys Drop’ release will be ‘Hope’ and ‘Bluey’ released on limited edition 10″ vinyl. Stunningly beautiful and sweet music with that distant New Zealand feel – Fat Freddy’s Drop will be remembered as one of the hottest new talents of 2003.

Watch out for the hot remixes, to be released soon …
