Reel People formed in February 2000 when Oli Lazarus and Tom Davidson met and began sharing ideas about their passion for soulful music. Tom was working on a session by East West Connection and at the time Oli was managing the Flying Records shop, also home to Chilli Funk “ East West Connection’s label. They hit it off immediately and not one but two projects were born “ Samson and Reel People.

As Samson they produced two singles for Estereo Recordings but it was their Reel People project that really inspired them. Their first release was the highly acclaimed “Spiritual”, released in 2001 on Oli’s Papa Records label. The single was written in collaboration with mutual friends and featured Nathan Haines on Flute. This proved to be the blueprint to which Reel People would continue.

“Spiritual” was followed by another single, “Reeltime”, and, following fantastic reactions to these releases, the idea to do the album was born. Earlier this year Mike Patto (restless soul) joined Reel People, bringing with him all off his musicianship and song-writing skills. With Mike in place they set about writing. From the outset the album concept was based around soulful music with an emphasis on good, well-written songs and a philosophy of working as a collaborative project with high quality musicians, vocalists and producers.

The featured vocalist for the album is up and coming talent Dyanna Fearon (from D’Influence’s camp), whilst there are also vocal contributions from Angela Johnson (of Cooly’s Hot Box fame), Vanessa Freeman (Nathan Haines, Alex Attias and Kyoto Jazz Massive amongst others) and Jag (known for his work with Modaji). Also contributing are Krim (DJ Spinna’s MC from Jigmastas) and Dynas, who’s been gaining recognition with releases on Beyond Real Productions amongst other.

There are also production collaborations with Phil Asher, DJ Spinna, Afronaught and Seiji, and players such as “Level” Neville Malcolm, Basil “Black 2 Basic” Isaac, Scott Baylis, Nathan Haines and Kevin Armstrong. The album fuses together elements of Broken Beat, R’n’B, Hip Hop, Dub, Jazz and, of course, Soulful House to create what will be one the most exciting albums for 2003.

Reel People have released four singles to date:
Spiritual (PAPA001)
Reeltime (PAPA002)
Spiritual (Opaque Remixes) (PAPA003)
Spiritual (Jon Cutler Remixes) (PAPA004)
Everyday People “Simmer Down” Remix (PAPA008)

The Album is due for release late Spring 2003.
