Schoolz of Thought have established themselves as the next big hip-hop group to rise out of the underground Philadelphia scene. They have released three successful singles, one in late 1999 and two in 2001, which have featured production by top status producers like Questlove (The Roots, Common, D’Angelo) and 88-Keys (Mos Def, Macy Gray, De La Soul,Musiq Soulchild). They have toured the country and abroad opening for De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Slum Village, Phife, the Roots, Kool Keith, The Beatnuts, Gangstar, High and Mighty, Black Eyed Peas, and Handsome Boy Modeling School. They have also starred in an international television advertisement for Puma.

Schoolz of Thought have quickly gone from a local Philadelphia hip-hop group who was associated with the Roots, to an international phenomenon that is known for bringing a unique Hip Hop musical vision. This universal appeal has led to Epic Records, Rawkus and Atlantic Records approaching Schoolz of Thought with interest in the group signing an exclusive recording contract.

Schoolz of Thought are comprised of 3 MC’s, Intense, Syntax and Speaque- Ezie; Two DJ’s, Bronze F.M., and the vocal turntabilist Skratch (also a member of the Roots). Friends since high school, Schoolz evolved from a belief that hip-hop transcends all boundaries and can truly excite and unite its listeners (this is reflected in the groups multi-ethnic make up). Their music can only be described as a unique socially conscious version of an eclectic form of Hip Hop. Their lyrics and flows are reminiscent of hip-hop’s golden age when Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul were at the top of their game. Their music is a combination of Jazz, Soul, and retro 70’s combined to make a thick musical stew.

In 2001, the Schoolz’ awareness increased even further with the success of a single (World Wide MC’s), two solo projects (singles from Intense and Syntax), a month long 25 date tour of the northeast and southern regions of the US, and a publicity campaign. In addition, Schoolz beat out top mainstream hip-hop acts like the Roots, Eve and Beanie Sigel to win Philadelphia’s Hip Hop Group of the Year Award (The City Paper, 2001). In 2002 they were featured on the Rawkus UK compilation Scratch, DJ Spinna’s Beachwood release Urban Beat Suite, and performed 3 songs on fellow bandmate Scratch’s solo album The Embodiment of Instrumentation released through Atlantic Records. All of these accomplishments have added up to a perfect climate for the release of their full-length album (From Thought To Finish) which is in stores in europe now and will be released in the USA this summer!
