The Incredible Bongo Band’s ‘Apache’ is simply legendary in the world of dance music. Not only arguably one of the most sampled tracks of all time and a staple for Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash at the Bronx block parties of the ’70s, it has become an all-time hip hop and breakers anthem and is revered as the original break of all original breaks.

The Bongo Band was the brainchild of Michael Viner, a record executive who had signed the Osmonds and Sammy Davis Jr. to MGM. He also looked after soundtracks and, when the 1972 B-movie ‘The Thing With Two Heads’ required music for a last-minute chase scene, Viner put together a band at short notice – the track was ‘Bongo Rock’.

Alongside producer / arranger Perry Botkin, Jr., Viner formed the Bongo Band as a loose, informal conglomerate of musicians who came together to record percussive versions of established pop classics from ‘Apache’ to Iron Butterfly’s ‘In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida’ and the Stones’ ‘Satisfaction’. The core drummers were Jim Gordon (Traffic, Derek & The Dominoes), King Errisson, Bobbye Hall, Hal Blaine, Botkin and Viner although an all-star cast dropped in to contribute including Glen Campbell, Freda Payne and Ringo Starr.

Strut present the definitive Incredible Bongo Band for the first time anywhere on official release. ‘Bongo Rock: The Story Of The Incredible Bongo Band’ features the two original Bongo Band albums in their entirety (‘Bongo Rock’ and ‘The Return Of The Incredible Bongo Band’) and comes with an extensive new sleeve note from Mojo’s Angus Batey, including an interview with Michael Viner. The album is a must for breakheads, sample spotters and anyone into the history of dance music.
